357. Evaluation of two statistical models using the shock structure problem.

Abstract

The accuracy of two statistical models for the collision integral of the Boltzmann equation has been evaluated by applying the models to the solution of the problem of shock structure in a monatomic gas and then comparing the theoretical results with available ex perimental data. The two models considered here are the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook and ellipsoidal statistical models. The Mach number range covered is 1.59-10.7 and profiles for density and, where available, temperature are compared. The method of numerical solution is the discrete ordinate technique which looks quite promising for application to more complicated models. The results indicate that the ellipsoidal statistical model, which gives a correct value for the Prandtl number, gives accurate results for a low Mach number shock. However, the accuracy degenerates as the Mach number increases. The Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model gives poorer agreement with experimental data in all cases examined.

Abstract

The mechanisms that lead to the maintenance of chronic pain states are poorly understood, but their elucidation could lead to new insights into how pain becomes chronic and how it can potentially be reversed. We investigated the role of spinal dorsal horn neurons and descending circuitry in plasticity mediating a transition to pathological pain plasticity suggesting the presence of a chronic pain state using hyperalgesic priming. We found thatwhendorsal horn neurokinin 1 receptor-positive neurons or descending serotonergic neurons were ablated before hyperalgesic priming, IL-6- and carrageenan-induced mechanical hypersensitivity was impaired, and subsequent prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) response was blunted. However, when these neurons were lesioned after the induction of priming, they had no effect on the PGE2 response, reflecting differential mechanisms driving plasticity in a primed state. In stark contrast, animals with a spinally applied dopaminergic lesion showed intact IL-6- and carrageenan-induced mechanical hypersensitivity, but the subsequent PGE2 injection failed to cause mechanical hypersensitivity. Moreover, ablating spinally projecting dopaminergic neurons after the resolution of the IL-6- or carrageenan-induced response also reversed the maintenance of priming as assessed through mechanical hypersensitivity and the mouse grimace scale. Pharmacological antagonism of spinal dopamine D1/D5 receptors reversed priming, whereas D1/D5 agonists induced mechanical hypersensitivity exclusively in primed mice. Strikingly, engagement of D1/D5 coupled with anisomycin in primed animals reversed a chronic pain state, consistent with reconsolidation-like effects in the spinal dorsal horn. These findings demonstrate a novel role for descending dopaminergic neurons in the maintenance of pathological pain plasticity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The new compounds, H2GaE(SiMe3)23, E = P (1), As (2), the first authenticated examples of a phosphinogallane and an arsinogallane, containing the GaH2 moiety, are prepared via efficient dehydrosilylation from the respective combinations of H3Ga.NMe3 and E(SiMe3)3 in diethyl ether or toluene. Compounds 1 and 2 are characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, IR, and mass spectrometry. Single-crystal X-ray structural studies show that the molecular structures of 1 and 2 feature a flattened six-member ring of alternating Ga and E centers. Both compounds are reasonably stable at -30 deg C but spontaneously decompose at ambient temperatures, 2 noticeably faster than 1, with the evolution of HSiMe3, H2, and E(SiMe3)3. The pyrolysis of 1 yields nanocrystalline GaP while the pyrolysis of solids from decayed 2 results in nanocrystalline GaAs as determined from XRD studies. Under applied pyrolysis conditions, the thermally accelerated dehydrosilylation of the precursors is accompanied by a side-evolution of CH4 and retention of small quantities of amorphous Si/C phases.
