Abstract

An effort is made to define the notion of 'space factor,' an important parameter influencing the characteristics of all film high voltage power capacitors. It is shown that the space factor is only determined by the winding factor and press factor. A method for calculating the space factor at every point of an element is given. The relations between space factor and several important electric characteristics of the capacitor are presented. A 'suitable' space factor is not a constant value, but a function that varies with film thickness, film thickness increment rate, etc. >

Abstract

In recent years, a variety of antennas for mobile satellite communications have been proposed. Attention has been given to bifilar and quadrifilar helical antennas as suitable for base stations because of their simple structure of bar shape requiring only limited installation space. These types of antenna are widely used because of their simple structure and superior axis ratio. With bifilar and quadrifilar antennas, it is possible to attain omnidirectivity in the horizontal plane and make a variable vertical directional beam, i.e., conical beam, and thereby obtain the desired gain by changing the number of turns. These antennas can therefore be fixed and also be mounted on mobile stations (ships, automobiles, and aircraft). This paper discusses type of antenna structure: one is a bifilar antenna of a fixed length and diameter to permit shifting the beam in the desired direction by changing the winding factor manually or automatically. We calculated their excitation currents and radiation directivity by using the moment method.

Abstract

This study presents an analytical method for winding factor calculation and back electromotive force (EMF) prediction in air-core permanent magnet linear synchronous motors. In the proposed method, the voltage on each coil of a phase winding is calculated by adding the voltage induced in individual conductors considering a phase shift proportional to the conductor diameter. The proposed method can be used to find back EMF waveform of air-core linear motors with any winding configuration in terms of dimensional specifications of magnet track and winding assembly. Once the back EMF equation is obtained, it can be used to predict the thrust of the motor.The results of the proposed analytical model are compared with finite element analysis results for three different motors to verify the validity of the proposed modelling method. In order to investigate the effect of simplifying assumptions in model derivation, experimental back EMF result on a three-phase eight-pole motor is presented and compared with the proposed analytical model.

Abstract

The revolving-field theory as applied to single-phase induction motors is extended to develop a concise yet comprehensive theory for asymmetric three-phase induction motors. Each phase is represented by its equivalent circuit, not only to allow for uneven direct transformer interactions, due to asymmetric locations of phase windings, but also to account for the different number of turns, wire size, winding factor etc. each phase may have. The accuracy of the theory was confirmed by actual measurements on symmetric and asymmetric three-phase induction motors. Computed and test data on some motors are included for illustration. It is also shown that the general three-phase development can be easily applied to determine the behaviour of two- and single-phase induction machines, a useful feature for unified computer-aided design, by eliminating one and two phase windings, respectively. Not only the procedural details for determining the performance of single- and two-phase induction motors are given, but comparisons of numerical and test results on some output entities are included as well. Though the comparisons among theoretical and test results are made on fractional horsepower motors, the types being built at Universal Electric, the author is certain that the development presented here is equally applicable to all sizes of induction motors.

Abstract

The rotating coupled circuit equations and the corresponding equivalent circuits are developed for single-and poly-phase induction motors. For our general analysis purposes, a three-phase induction motor is considered with its primary windings at arbitrary locations. Each phase of a three-phase motor is represented by an equivalent circuit not only to allow for uneven direct transformer interactions among the fluxes but also to account for different number of conductors, wire size, winding factor, etc., each phase may have. The special case of a balanced three-phase induction motor is also considered. The analysis is then applied to single-phase induction motors with both quadrature and nonquadrature winding-displacements. The most useful feature of the present development is that it helps create a unified computer-aided analysis procedure for almost all types of induction motors. The accuracy of the theoretical development has been verified by conducting tests on both single-and three-phase induction motors. Though the comparisons are made on fractional horsepower motors, the types being built at Universal Electric, the author is certain that the general theoretical approach suggested here is equally applicable to all sizes of induction motors.

Abstract

A new concept termed ‘phase shift modification’ for the design of two-speed single-winding three-phase induction motors is discussed. Designs are classified based on the chosen phase-spread on the initial and final pole scales. A method for improving the layer factor on the final-pole connection without affecting the winding factor for the initial pole connection is also presented. Although the concept is illustrated with respect to a 8/10 pole-combination it is equally applicable to any other pole-ratio.

Abstract

A flyback step-up dc-to-dc power converter is modeled utilizing a linear magnetic core, transistor switch, diode, filter capacitance, and load resistance. Assuming constant voltage drops across the semiconductor elements when conducting, the circuit is analyzed to obtain an equation for the required number of turns, subject to the constraints of specified output voltage, operating frequency, maximum winding factor, maximum and minimum input voltage, output power, and flux density. Using an interpretive language, a program has been written to run on a minicomputer which searches a data base of magnetic core characteristics obtained from commercial core catalogs and prints a list of windable cores. In an evaluation section of the program, a core from the windable core list is selected by the designer and the losses in the various elements, along with maximum and minimum transistor current are computed. Another program is used to display on a computer graphics device the loci of maximum and minimum flux density in a selected core as functions of input voltage and output power in a perspective plot. Converter circuits derived from this computer-aided design procedure when tested in the laboratory have yielded data in close agreement with that predicted by the program.

Task thesis was rendering literature review. Analysis of the problem consists of various analytical calculations using Matlab and subsequent comparison of results with measured data on real induction machine. The last part of thesis is a summary of conditions for induction machine with low noise.

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na analýzu a návrh vinutí střídavých strojů. V teoretické části práce jsou vysvětleny rozdíly mezi jednovrstvými a dvouvrstvými vinutími. Dále jsou popsány vlastnosti statorového vinutí synchronních strojů. Nakonec je určen činitel vinutí pomocí standardní výpočetní metody a také pomocí nové progresivní výpočetní metody. V experimentální části této práce je navrženo statorové vinutí vysokootáčkového synchronního generátoru buzeného permanentními magnety na rotoru. Tento generátor je poháněn parní turbínou., This diploma thesis is focused on an analysis and design of an AC machines windings. In the theoretical part of the thesis, differences between single-layer and double-layer windings are explained. Next, the properties of a stator winding of synchronous machines are described. Finally, the winding factor is determined by means of a standard calculation method and by means of a new progressive calculation method, too. In the experimental part of this thesis, the stator winding of a high-speed synchronous generator excited by permanent magnets on the rotor is designed. This generator is driven by a steam turbine.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá pojednáním o synchronním motoru s permanentními magnety a výpočtem jeho parametrů. V první části je rozebrána konstrukce motoru a~uvedeny různé typy používaných permanentních magnetů. Část práce je také věnována stručnému přehledu vinutí statoru, výpočtu činitelů vinutí a základních parametrů statorového vinutí. Je zde také uveden výpočet magnetické indukce ve vzduchové mezeře. Její výsledná hodnota je přepočtena pomocí Carterova činitele a poté určena i hodnota první harmonické magnetické indukce ve vzduchové mezeře. Výsledek je porovnán s výpočtem v programu FEMM. Další část práce vytváří ucelený přehled o stroji pomocí náhradního obvodového schématu a fázorových diagramů. Nakonec je zde uveden model vytvořený v RMxprtu a ANSYS Maxwell. Výsledné hodnoty analýzy modelu jsou porovnány s analytickým výpočtem., This thesis deals with the elaboration of The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and the calculation of its parameters. In the first part, the construction and used permanent magnets of this motor are listed here. The next part of the thesis contains a short overview of the stator windings, the calculation of the winding factors and calculation of the basic parameters of the stator winding. The calculation of the magnetic induction in the air gap is also illustrated here. The result is recalculated by using the Carter factor and then the value of the first harmonics of air-gap flux density is determined. The result is compared with the analysis in the program FEMM. The next part of the thesis is creating a comprehensive overview of the machine using a replacement circuit diagram and phasor diagrams. Disertační práce je rozdělena na tři hlavní části se zaměřením na asynchronní motory. První část práce je zaměřena na elektromagnetický návrh a analýzu vinutí střídavých strojů. Je zde zaveden pojem hustota vodičů, jenž popisuje rozložení vinutí v drážkách. Je zde odvozen zcela obecný vztah pro výpočet celkového činitele vinutí použitelný pro vinutí libovolného typu. Druhá část se zabývá akcelerační metodou měření momentových charakteristik asynchronních motorů. Změřené charakteristiky jsou použity při přesné identifikaci parametrů náhradního zapojení. Třetí část je věnována možnostem velmi přesné identifikace parametrů náhradního zapojení asynchronního motoru ve formě Gama-článku. Identifikace je založena na vzájemném porovnání změřených a vypočtených momentových a proudových charakteristik., The doctoral thesis is divided into three main parts with a focus on induction motors. The first part deals with the electromagnetic design and analysis of windings of AC ma-chines. There is introduced the density of conductors, which describes the distribution of the windings in the slots. There is derived general formula for calculation of the total winding factor applicable to any type of winding. The second part of this work deals with the acceleration method of the induction motors torque-speed characteristics measurement. The measured characteristics are used for exact identification of the equivalent circuit parameters of induction motor. The third section is focused on a very precise identification of the equivalent circuit parameters of induction motor in the form of -circuit. The identification is based on mutual comparison of measured and calculated torque-speed and current-speed characteristics.

Třetí část je věnována možnostem velmi přesné identifikace parametrů náhradního zapojení asynchronního motoru ve formě Gama-článku. Identifikace je založena na vzájemném porovnání změřených a vypočtených momentových a proudových charakteristik., The doctoral thesis is divided into three main parts with a focus on induction motors. The first part deals with the electromagnetic design and analysis of windings of AC ma-chines. There is introduced the density of conductors, which describes the distribution of the windings in the slots. There is derived general formula for calculation of the total winding factor applicable to any type of winding. The second part of this work deals with the acceleration method of the induction motors torque-speed characteristics measurement. The measured characteristics are used for exact identification of the equivalent circuit parameters of induction motor. The third section is focused on a very precise identification of the equivalent circuit parameters of induction motor in the form of -circuit. The identification is based on mutual comparison of measured and calculated torque-speed and current-speed characteristics.

Abstract

In this paper, a comprehensive computer-aided design (CAD) procedure for a radial-flux surface mounted permanent magnet brushless dc motor is presented. The design variables such as airgap flux density, slot electric loading, winding factor, stacking factor, stator current density, slot space factor, magnet fraction, slot fraction, flux density in the stator back iron, etc., are assumed. The basic output equations are derived and used for the design algorithm. The developed CAD program gives the design data and the calculated performances of the motor. Three different motors of rating 70 W, 2.2, and 20 kW are designed using the developed program and then finite-element analyses are carried out to validate the designs.

Abstract

A set of rational criteria are identified for assessing the merits of pole-changing windings for cage induction motors, in terms of capacity and performance of the two speed settings. It is shown that a change-pole setting is simply a nonstandard design that differs from the standard design essentially in respect of flux density and winding factor. In terms of these two quantities, relative performance indexes are derived that are pure numerics, with unity for the standard machine. Optimum coil spans are obtained for the familiar 1:2 pole, changing winding. Other criteria are the quality of the winding in terms of balance and m.m.f.harmonics, and the size of the controller. The uses of the main criteria are illustrated by application to some existing designs. Earlier criteria are surveyed and shown to be either incomplete or incorrect. The new criteria form a logical basis on which meaningful comparison can be made, not only between pole. changing machines and standard machines, but also between different designs of two-speed machine for a given pole combination.

Abstract

Permanent magnet synchronous machines provide many dramatic electromagnetic performances such as high efficiency and high power density, which make them more competitive in aircraft electrification, whereas, designing a permanent magnet starter–generator (PMSG), with given consideration to fault tolerance (FT), is a significant challenge and requires great effort. In this paper, a comprehensive FT PMSG design process is proposed which is applied to power systems of turboprops. Firstly, potential slot/pole combinations were selected based on winding factor, harmonic losses and manufacture issues. Then, pursuing high power density, a multiple objective optimization process was carried out to comprehensively rank performances. To meet a fault tolerance target, electrical, magnetic and thermal isolation topologies were investigated and compared, among which 18 slot/12 pole with dual three-phase was selected as the optimal one, with a power density of 7.9 kW/kg. Finally, a finite element analysis verified the performance in normal and post-fault scenarios. The candidate machine has merits concerning high power density and post-fault performance.
