An effort is made to define the notion of 'space factor,' an important parameter influencing the characteristics of all film high voltage power capacitors. It is shown that the space factor is only determined by the winding factor and press factor. A method for calculating the space factor at every point of an element is given. The relations between space factor and several important electric characteristics of the capacitor are presented. A 'suitable' space factor is not a constant value, but a function that varies with film thickness, film thickness increment rate, etc. >
