This paper makes a contribution to the debate surrounding the characteristics and the performance of new firms and firm founders in rural as opposed to urban areas in Great Britain. It was appreciated that sample differences may overwhelm the exploratory analysis. Consequently, in order to overcome this potentially distorting influence a matched pairs methodology was utilized. Ninety matched pairs of rural and urban firms were identified. In total, data were collected on 147 variables covering the firm, the founder and the environment. Dichotomizing between the two defined area types statistically significant differences were observed with regard to only 16 variables (11%). The policy implications of the survey findings are discussed. WESTHEAD P. Tout en différenciant entre les deux types de zones ainsi délimitées, il s'est avéré que seulement 16 variables (à savoir 11%) ont démontré des différences significatives du point de vue statistique. New private tourism firms play a key role in promoting local and national wealth creation. Building upon insights from entrepreneurial motivation and human capital theories, in this study fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of longitudinal data was employed to identify the human capital pathways of 1182 entrepreneurs in Portugal engaged in tourism reporting high firm sales growth between 2008 and 2015. Two dimensions of entrepreneur human capital at firm start-up were found to be sufficient for high sales growth: a) Necessity- and opportunity-based entrepreneurs with specific human capital industry experience relating to tourism, and b) Opportunity-based entrepreneurs with managerial experience. • Entrepreneurial motivations and human capital impact sales growth. • Tourism firm sales growth is determined by factor configurations. • Fuzzy-set QCA identifies the human capital pathways of 1182 entrepreneurs. • Data are split into groups of necessity- and opportunity-based entrepreneurs. • Human capital tourism industry experience generally leads to high sales growth. Entrepreneurs can exhibit the entrepreneurial burnout syndrome, which retards entrepreneur and firm performance. Building upon insights from the conservation of resources theory of stress response and psychology theory, this study examined the role of entrepreneur emotional demands as well as job autonomy and satisfaction resources with regard to entrepreneurial burnout. Multivariate regression analysis relating to 273 entrepreneurs in France revealed that emotional demands were positively associated with entrepreneurial burnout, while job autonomy and satisfaction were negatively associated with entrepreneurial burnout. Job autonomy buffered the negative effect of emotional demands on entrepreneurial burnout. However, job satisfaction did not buffer the negative effect of emotional demands on entrepreneurial burnout.
