Each curriculum framework includes some or all of the following: program title, occupational area, grade level, length, certification awarded; major concepts/content covered in the course; laboratory activities; special notes; and intended outcomes. Under a 1980 law, colleges and universities can be liable for cleanup of hazardous waste on properties, in companies, and related to stocks they invest in or are given. College planners should establish clear policy concerning gifts, investigate gifts, distance university from business purposes, sell real estate gifts quickly, consult a risk management expert, and monitor institutional hazardous materials use. This document contains project-oriented lessons and hands-on activities developed to integrate steel recycling, natural resource conservation, and solid waster management into science learning. It is designed to assist secondary teachers and students (grades 9-12) in meeting state and local goals for learning in biology, chemistry, general science and earth science, and physics. The first lesson, "Supply & Demand" includes the activities "Reducing Food Spoilage and Waste" and "Space Food." The activities included in the second lesson concerning "Collect & Haul" are "Leachate Collection" and "Composing with Worms.""Bones and Levers" and "The Color of Hot Metals" are the activities included with the third lesson concerning the topic "Sort & Produce." Also included is a cross-reference chart of activities to biology concepts and critical thinking skills, glossary, student worksheets, a 17-item resource list, and a teacher evaluation form. This multimedia package includes a 55-minute videocassettes, a guide, and six posters and was designed to provide teaching outlines/plans for a two-week thematic unit on Great Lakes fisheries for middle school or high school youth. The guide can be used in both formal school settings and nonformal school settings such as youth organizations and nature centers. This package contains six activities and the video is segmented into four sections for ease of presentation during typical class or meeting periods. The guide is divided into the following sections: (1) Introduction: Purpose of the Guide; (2) Teaching about Great Lakes Fisheries, which includes a curriculum framework listing goals and objectives; (3) Pre- or Post-Video Short Activities and Activities Using Great Lakes Fisheries Map/Posters, which provides a discussion guide for use with the video; (4) Activities; (5) Additional Overhead/Handout Masters; and (6) Resources, including curriculum materials related to Great Lakes fisheries or aquatic sciences, videos, educational opportunities, and educational contacts. The activities cover such issues as overfishing and predation by the sea lamprey, fisheries careers, effects of social and technological activities on fisheries, effects of contaminants on environmental and human health, the role of fisheries in the economy, and food webs. A primary goal of the American Chemical Society Task Force on Laboratory Waste Management is to provide laboratories with the information necessary to develop effective strategies and training programs for managing laboratory wastes. This book is intended to present a fresh look at waste management from the laboratory perspective, considering both the unique character and technical expertise of laboratories. The following chapters are included: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Laws and Regulations"; (3) "Responsibilities of the Organization"; (4) "Training of Laboratory Workers"; (5) "Identification and Characterization of Wastes"; (6) "Reducing Wastes"; (7) "On-Site Waste Handling and Disposal"; (8) "Off-Site Monitoring and Control"; and (9) "Working with Regulators." Increased human population has led to more frequent interactions with the environment. The results of those interactions have affected the Earth's ecosystem. This manual contains hands-on, problem-centered activities to help students develop an environmental ethic and stewardship regarding waste management. The activities are grouped under three thematic headings: where wastes end up, options and choices we have involving waste management, and the interconnectedness of environmental issues. The introduction provides the theoretical foundation and principles of learning for the environmental education activities and a rationale for reducing, reusing, and recycling. Part 1 contains 18 activities on the problem of solid waste, alternatives to incineration and landfilling, and developing a school reduction, reuse, and recycling program. Part 2 contains 12 activities related to waste minimization, composting, hazardous wastes, recycling, product packaging, energy consumption, and consumer decision-making. Part 3 contains 12 activities concerning the additional environmental issues of population growth, ecosystems, finite natural resources, lifecycle analysis, air pollution, acid rain, wastewater treatment, environmental careers, ozone depletion, human resources, and land use. Each activity contains the activities' objectives, recommended instructional method, background information, materials needed, teaching procedures, and ideas for further study. This manual was developed by the Community Resource Curriculum Development Project (CRCDP), a cooperative project to develop multi-disciplinary, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural science/social sciences teaching units based upon the Illinois State Goals for Learning and the Chicago Public Schools outcomes for a seamless kindergarten, first, and second grade cluster. This manual contains six teaching units that include several experience-based activities using a constructivist teaching model and incorporating local resources. In these units, students approach each activity using skills gained from their own life experiences. Scientific principles and concepts are introduced following active exploration with hands-on models and investigations. Lessons are linked to information available in the local area and teachers are encouraged to utilize resources in their neighborhood communities whenever possible. The units include: (1) "Eco Eco..."; (2) "The Four Seasons of the Year"; (3) "Getting a Grip on our Garbage"; (4) "Animals, Animals Everywhere: Land, Sea, and Air"; (5) "Our Wonderful Raintree Forests"; and (6) "Developing an Appreciation for Trees." This guide was developed to present activities which inform the teacher and students of solid waste management problems that are becoming commonplace in villages. The lessons included present alternatives for taking care of the environment and contains methods to make not only school children more sensitive to environmental problems, but hopefully to inspire a grassroots program that will address local concerns. The first chapter incorporates and discusses the values and other aspects of the curriculum. The content areas presented can easily be integrated into many other areas of study including science, social studies, math, art and writing. Units presented include: Our Places and Traditions, Our Ecosystem--Earth, Waste, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Disposal, and Back to the Future. Learning about issues such as natural resources, solid waste management, waste reduction, and the economics of recycling can encourage people to make better choices for the future. The manufacturing process used to produce printbands for International Business Machines, Inc. involves a photolithographic process in which the stainless steel panels are chemically machined using strong ferric chloride etching solution containing hydrochloric acid. The waste material that results from this chemical reaction is a solution composed primarily of ferric chloride. This case study examined the development of an alternative process that would reduce the amounts of ferric chloride used in the manufacturing cycle by regenerating the ferric chloride and reduce the amounts of hazardous wastes. Three options to solve the problem are presented: the electrochemical option; the ozone gas option, and the air oxidation option. The decision to choose the oxygen option is discussed. A teaching note that contains educational objectives, a case synopsis, suggestions for using the case, and an analysis and evaluation is provided in a separate document. (MDH)

Designed for middle school science and social studies classes, this document is a curriculum on waste disposal. Mathematics and language skills also are incorporated into many of the activities. In the study of trash disposal, science students benefit from understanding the social issues related to the problem. Social studies students need scientific background knowledge in order to understand the social issues. This curriculum is organized so that the first activities give a general sense of the scope of today's trash disposal problem. Students learn about the amount of trash that is created and the methods by which people dispose of it. Activities that might be classified as more scientific include experiments in which disposal methods are tried in the classroom. Activities that might be classified as more "social studies" include readings, discussions, and role plays about the controversies concerning various methods of disposal and use of resources. Later activities focus specifically on hazardous waste and the issues of environmental safety and social justice related to its disposal. Some actions that students themselves can take are identified and guidelines for getting involved in such projects are presented. Consisting of four chapters, the chapters include overviews, background information, and suggested teaching methods for teachers. Chapter 1 offers 15 activities about trash and its disposal. Chapter 2 contains six activities on hazardous waste. Chapter 3 includes four lessons on hazardous waste as a social justice issue. Chapter 4 has two activities on making a difference. This student textbook and accompanying teacher supplement strive to provide objective instruction in global environmental issues. Twenty-six study units present facts, opinions, and consequences of environmental issues, as well as responses which have been, and could be, made to the environmental issues. Each unit is introduced by a newspaper headline and contains: (1) discussion and background information on a specific environmental issue: (2) open-ended questions intended to encourage further study and understanding; (3) activities that can be done in the classroom or home environment; and (4) references to related careers, organizations, source citations, suggested readings, and viewings. Appendices provide a listing of Canadian, U.S. federal, U.S. state, and private sector environmental organizations; an historical listing of environmental laws; a glossary, and an index. A teacher supplement provides: (1) teaching frameworks; (2) answers to open-ended questions; (3) listings of both printed and audio-visual supplementary materials; (4) background on performance-based learning, portfolios, and cooperative project assessment; (5) procedural recommendations for 11 project assessments; (6) a two-stage approach to research report evaluation; (7) 12 projects and assessments; and (8) reproducible student assessment masters that detail task, procedure, and evaluation rubric. Among the goals of multicultural and social reconstructionist education are to improve academic achievement, increase appreciation for cultural differences, develop problem-solving skills, and encourage social action. This curriculum unit is concerned with the infusion of multicultural ideals into the elementary science curriculum. A total of 10 lesson plans on air pollution, water pollution, and recycling for elementary-age students are developmentally appropriate, interdisciplinary, innovative, and action oriented. A modified version of the North Carolina Effective Teacher Lesson Plan Model provides the basic outline. Lesson plans contain sections on grade range, approximate time, goal, student objectives, materials, background information and focus, input, guided practice, independent practice, closure, evaluation, extension activities, activities for upper elementary students, connections to other subject areas, and resources. In addition, each lesson features a brief explanation describing how the lesson demonstrates multicultural principles. (LZ)
