Transboundary challenges such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, energy transformation and the Covid-19 pandemic put vast pressures on generating solutions. They also call for updated teaching providing the required capabilities for international business (IB) and -entrepreneurship (IE) students. This paper presents a teaching initiative supporting master's students to develop an overview of such contemporary and timely challenges and global concerns. The course, developed jointly by two universities and first administered in 2020 at LUT University, combines economic, social, and environmental sustainability aspects with managerial and entrepreneurial issues on IB, triggering the students to rethink and critically address ways forward. Students develop skills and competences to tackle complex real-life problems in collaboration with others, facilitating their entrepreneurial, global mind-set and sensitivity to cultural issues in IB. Thus, the presented teaching approach and course initiative contributes to theory and practice of teaching IB, by presenting how key challenges in contemporary IB can be incorporated in international business education of universities. - Abstract
2-Amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ), a hetero-cyclic aromatic amine that has been identified in cooked meats and cigarette condensates, is mutagenic in human lymphoblastoid TK6 cells at the thymidine kinase and hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (hprt) loci. Treatment of the cells with IQ following activation with either an exogenous metabolizing mixture (S9) or following photoactivation of the azido-derivative of IQ (N3-IQ) showed that the photolytic-derivative of N3-IQ was more active. This observation is consistent with other reports that indicate that the weak mutagenicity of IQ in mammalian cells is caused by the lack of enzymes required for the ultimate activation of the compound within the cells. Two DNA adducts were found by 32P-post-labelling in the cells treated with the photoactivated N3-IQ. The major adduct was identified as N-(deoxyguanosin-8-yl)-2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]qui noline (dG-C8-IQ) and the minor adduct as 5-(deoxyguanosin-N2-yl)-2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (dG-N2-IQ). The ratio of the dG-C8-IQ to the dG-N2-IQ adducts was 3:1 and did not significantly change in cultures treated with different concentrations of the mutagen. Approximately 50% of the adducts were removed 9 h after treatment with IQ and <10% of these adducts remained after 24 h. There was no significant preferential repair of either adduct under the experimental conditions used. The identification of 15 mutations induced at the hprt locus (of the 44 mutants analysed) showed IQ to be efficient at inducing single base deletions in a run of guanines. Six single guanine deletions were observed in the run of six guanines in exon III and one deletion of a single guanine was observed in a non-repetitive sequence in exon VI. Other mutations observed were two GC→TA transversions, two GC→CG transversions one AT→TA transversion and one GC→AT transition. In addition, two multiple mutations were found. The majority of the identified mutations (12/15) occurred at GC base pairs and suggests either the dG-C8-IQ or the dG-N2-IQ adduct to be the pre-mutagenic lesion. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Two major limitations concerning the design of cost-effective application-specific architectures are the recurrent costs of system-software development and hardware implementation, in particular VLSI implementation, for each architecture. The SCalable ARChitecture Experiment (SCARCE) aims to provide a framework for application-specific processor design. The framework allows scaling of functionality, implementation complexity, and performance. The SCARCE framework consists and will consist of: an architecture framework defining the constraints for the design of application-specific architectures; tools for synthesizing architectures from application or application-area; VLSI cell libraries and tools for quick generation of application-specific processors; a system-software platform which can be retargeted quickly to fit the application-specific architecture; This paper concentrates primarily on the architecture framework of SCARCE, but also presents briefly some software issues and outlines the process of generating VLSI processors.

In spontaneously breathing, chloralose narcotized and bilaterally vagotomized cats under mannite saline diuresis, the isolated carotid sinus were perfused for 1 hr with arterial and then for 1 hr with venous blood, and subsequently again with arterial blood for 1 hr. Either measure d or calculated were the parameters of arterial acid-base status, the arterial systemic bl-od pressure, the p-aminohippuric acid (PAH), inulin (IN), and osmolar clearance, the filtration fraction, the tubular reabsorption of oxmotically free water, the urinary time volume, and fractional excretions of the kidneys. Stimulation of the carotic chemoreceptors increased respiration, slightly enhanced the CPAH, and caused a minor fall of CIN with little altered filtration fraction. The renal resistance increased. The absolute and fractional excretions of urine, sodium, potassium, and of osmotically active particles rose significantly. Tubular reabsorption of osmotically free water showed a singificant increase. Urinary osmolarity remained constant in general. The changes of water and electrolyte excretion did not correlate with those of renal hemodynamics. The results argue against natriuresis being caused on chemoreceptor stimulation by increased filtrate volume of the whole kidney, or by decreased osmolarity of the renal medulla. The results are discussed with regard to the renal function in arterial oxygen deficiency.

Records were reviewed of 160 patients who underwent transjugular liver biopsy (TJLB) during a five-year period. Percutaneous transperitoneal needle biopsy was contraindicated in 95% of these patients because of coagulation abnormalities or massive ascites. Moderate complications occurred in two patients. Diagnostic biopsy material was obtained in 129 (81%). TJLB provided useful information in 44 of 58 patients without documented alcohol abuse (clinical Groups III and IV). TJLB disclosed additional diagnoses aside from Laennec cirrhosis in 15 of 48 alcoholic patients with sudden clinical deterioration (Group II), including 11 cases with other stages of alcholic liver disease and four cases of primary or metastatic neoplasm. TJLB revealed diagnoses other than Laennec cirrhosis, including three neoplasms, in six of 54 clinically stable alcoholics (Group I). TJLB frequently yielded important data relative to clinical management or prognosis in Group II, III, and IV patients; it was less useful in Group I patients.

The diagnosis of aortic dissection can be made with certainty when computed tomography or aortography reveals two lumina and a intimal flap between them. If the false lumen is thrombosed, the differential diagnosis between dissection and aneurysm with intraluminal thrombus is difficult. High resolution computed tomography with dynamic scanning seems more effective in differentiating these two entities than aortography. Two illustrative cases are presented.

A 44-year-old woman with hepatocellular carcinoma presented with intractable watery diarrhea and her condition was evaluated angiographically. Surgical ablation of the tumor resulted in complete resolution of the diarrhea. The tumor cells of the hepatocellular carcinoma were found to contain vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, gastrin, and prostaglandinlike immunoactivity. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such an association.

Critical care ,Traumatic brain injury ,WLSM ,Original ,Intensive care unit ,3. Good health - Abstract
Funder: National Institute for Health Research (UK), Background: In patients with severe brain injury, withdrawal of life-sustaining measures (WLSM) is common in intensive care units (ICU). WLSM constitutes a dilemma: instituting WLSM too early could result in death despite the possibility of an acceptable functional outcome, whereas delaying WLSM could unnecessarily burden patients, families, clinicians, and hospital resources. We aimed to describe the occurrence and timing of WLSM, and factors associated with timing of WLSM in European ICUs in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: The CENTER-TBI Study is a prospective multi-center cohort study. For the current study, patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) admitted to the ICU and aged 16 or older were included. Occurrence and timing of WLSM were documented. For the analyses, we dichotomized timing of WLSM in early (< 72 h after injury) versus later (≥ 72 h after injury) based on recent guideline recommendations. We assessed factors associated with initiating WLSM early versus later, including geographic region, center, patient, injury, and treatment characteristics with univariable and multivariable (mixed effects) logistic regression. Results: A total of 2022 patients aged 16 or older were admitted to the ICU. ICU mortality was 13% (n = 267). Of these, 229 (86%) patients died after WLSM, and were included in the analyses. The occurrence of WLSM varied between regions ranging from 0% in Eastern Europe to 96% in Northern Europe. In 51% of the patients, WLSM was early. Patients in the early WLSM group had a lower maximum therapy intensity level (TIL) score than patients in the later WLSM group (median of 5 versus 10) The strongest independent variables associated with early WLSM were one unreactive pupil (odds ratio (OR) 4.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.3–12.4) or two unreactive pupils (OR 5.8, CI 2.6–13.1) compared to two reactive pupils, and an Injury Severity Score (ISS) if over 41 (OR per point above 41 = 1.1, CI 1.0–1.1). Timing of WLSM was not significantly associated with region or center. Conclusion: WLSM occurs early in half of the patients, mostly in patients with severe TBI affecting brainstem reflexes who were severely injured. We found no regional or center influences in timing of WLSM. Whether WLSM is always appropriate or may contribute to a self-fulfilling prophecy requires further research and argues for reluctance to institute WLSM early in case of any doubt on prognosis.

- Abstract
One major challenge for the academic Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research community is the adoption of its findings and theoretical output by the interaction design practitioners whose work they are meant to support. To address this “research-practice gap”, this thesis takes the example of trajectories, a HCI conceptual framework derived from studies of mixed-reality performances spanning complex spaces, timeframes, participant roles, and interface ecologies. Trajectories’ authors have called for their work to be used to inform the design of a broader variety of experiences. This thesis explores what is required to fulfil this ambition, with a specific focus on using the framework to improve the experience of live events, and on professional design practitioners as the users of the framework. This exploration follows multiple approaches, led both by researchers and practitioners.\ud This thesis starts by reviewing past uses of the trajectories framework – including for design purposes – and by discussing work that has previously tried to bridge the research-practice gap. In a first series of studies, the thesis identifies live events – such as music festivals and running races – as a rich setting where trajectories may be used both to study existing experiences and to design new ones. This leads to a series of design guidelines grounded both in knowledge about the setting and in trajectories. The thesis then discusses multiple approaches through which HCI researchers and practitioners at a large media company have joined forces to try to use trajectories in industrial design and production processes. Finally, the last strand of work returns to live events, with a two-year long Research through Design study in which trajectories have been used to improve the experience of a local music festival and to develop a mobile app to support it. This last study provides first-hand insight into the integration of theoretical concerns into design.\ud This thesis provides three major classes of contributions. First, extensions to the original trajectories framework, which include refined definitions for the set of concepts that the framework comprises, as well as considerations for open-ended experiences where control is shared between stakeholders and participants. Secondly, a model describing the use of trajectories throughout design and production processes offers a blueprint for practitioners willing to use the framework. Finally, a discussion on the different ways trajectories have been translated into practice leads to proposing a model for locating translations of HCI knowledge with regards to the gap between academic research and design practice, and the gap between theoretical knowledge and design artefacts.

Funder: ZNS - Hannelore Kohl Stiftung; doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100007731, Funder: Integra LifeSciences Corporation, Funder: OneMind, Background: Prehospital care for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) varies with some emergency medical systems recommending direct transport of patients with moderate to severe TBI to hospitals with specialist neurotrauma care (SNCs). The aim of this study is to assess variation in levels of early secondary referral within European SNCs and to compare the outcomes of directly admitted and secondarily transferred patients. Methods: Patients with moderate and severe TBI (Glasgow Coma Scale < 13) from the prospective European CENTER-TBI study were included in this study. All participating hospitals were specialist neuroscience centers. First, adjusted between-country differences were analysed using random effects logistic regression where early secondary referral was the dependent variable, and a random intercept for country was included. Second, the adjusted effect of early secondary referral on survival to hospital discharge and functional outcome [6 months Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOSE)] was estimated using logistic and ordinal mixed effects models, respectively. Results: A total of 1347 moderate/severe TBI patients from 53 SNCs in 18 European countries were included. Of these 1347 patients, 195 (14.5%) were admitted after early secondary referral. Secondarily referred moderate/severe TBI patients presented more often with a CT abnormality: mass lesion (52% vs. 34%), midline shift (54% vs. 36%) and acute subdural hematoma (77% vs. 65%). After adjusting for case-mix, there was a large European variation in early secondary referral, with a median OR of 1.69 between countries. Early secondary referral was not associated with functional outcome (adjusted OR 1.07, 95% CI 0.78–1.69), nor with survival at discharge (1.05, 0.58–1.90). Conclusions: Across Europe, substantial practice variation exists in the proportion of secondarily referred TBI patients at SNCs that is not explained by case mix. Within SNCs early secondary referral does not seem to impact functional outcome and survival after stabilisation in a non-specialised hospital. Future research should identify which patients with TBI truly benefit from direct transportation.

Hydrotite, a new joint sealing material, reduces the risks encountered with segment joints to a minimum. It is a mixture of water-insoluble resins, with the capacity to swell, and synthetic rubber. Sealing strips are attached by contact adhesive immediately before the tubbing segments are installed. A protective coating is used to prevent premature swelling. It has been successfully tried out in practice in Japanese tunnels, and is currently being tested by STUVA in Cologne. Simple and low-price conversions of existing structures are also feasible under certain circumstances., Hydrotite, a new joint sealing material, reduces the risks encountered with segment joints to a minimum. An electromagnetic method and a two-channel electromagnetic device are described which can be used to control two pulp parameters, the volume flow and the magnetic permeability. The accuracy of the calculation of the mass of a solid phase is not affected by changes in the physical properties of the liquid and gaseous media components of the pulp. The need to measure the density of the pulp and of the liquid/gas components is eliminated. The use of the equipment in conjunction with a radioisotope densimeter is described., An electromagnetic method and a two-channel electromagnetic device are described which can be used to control two pulp parameters, the volume flow and the magnetic permeability. We present a case study of how Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) theory is reused within the field. We analyze the HCI literature in order to reveal the impact of one particular theory, the trajectories framework that has been cited as an example of both contemporary HCI theory and a strong concept that sits between theory and design practice. Our analysis of 60 papers that seriously engaged with trajectories reveals the purposes that the framework served and which parts of it they used. We compare our findings to the originally stated goals of trajectories and to subsequent claims of its status as both theory and strong concept. The results shed new light on what we mean by theory in HCI, including its relationship to practice and to other disciplines.

- Abstract
There has been a massive growth in the number of people who film and upload amateur footage of events to services such as Facebook and Youtube, or even stream live to services such as LiveStream. We present an exploratory study that investigates the potential of these spectators in creating footage en masse; in this case, during a live trial at a local marathon. We deployed a prototype app, RunSpotRun, as a technology probe to see what kinds of footage spectators would produce. We present an analysis of this footage in terms of its coverage, quality, and contents, and also discuss the implications for a) spectators enjoying the race, and b) extracting the stories of individual runners throughout the race. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges that remain for deploying such technology at a larger scale.

Media coverage of large-scale live events is becoming increasingly complex, with technologies enabling the delivery of a broader range of content as well as complex viewing patterns across devices and services. This paper presents a study aimed at understanding the experience of people who have followed the broadcast coverage of a music festival. Our findings show that the experience takes a diversity of forms and bears a complex relationship with the actual experience of being at the festival. We conclude this analysis by proposing that novel services for coverage of this type of events should connect and interleave the diverse threads of experiences around large-scale live events and consider involving more diverse elements of the experience of ``being there''.
