We present kinematically forbidden dark matter annihilations into Standard Model leptons. This mechanism precisely selects the dark matter mass that gives the observed relic abundance. This is qualitatively different from existing models of thermal dark matter, where fixing the relic density typically leaves open orders of magnitude of viable dark matter masses. Forbidden annihilations require the dark matter to be close in mass to the particles that dominate its annihilation rate. We show examples where the dark matter mass is close to the muon mass, the tau mass, or the average of the tau and muon masses. We find that most of the relevant parameter space can be covered by the next generation of proposed beam-dump experiments and future high-luminosity electron positron colliders. Does the value of the Higgs mass parameter affect the expectation value of local operators in the Standard Model? For essentially all local operators the answer to this question is "no", and this is one of the avatars of the hierarchy problem: nothing is "triggered" when the Higgs mass parameter crosses zero. In this letter, we explore settings in which Higgs mass parameters $can$ act as a "trigger" for some local operators ${\cal O}_T$. In the Standard Model, this happens for ${\cal O}_T = {\rm Tr} (G \tilde G)$. We also introduce a "type-0" two Higgs doublet model, with a $Z_4$ symmetry, for which ${\cal O}_T = H_1 H_2$ is triggered by the Higgs masses, demanding the existence of new Higgs states necessarily comparable to or lighter than the weak scale, with no wiggle room to decouple them whatsoever. Surprisingly, this model is not yet entirely excluded by collider searches, and will be incisively probed by the high-luminosity run of the LHC, as well as future Higgs factories. We also discuss a possibility for using this trigger to explain the origin of the weak scale, invoking a landscape of extremely light, weakly interacting scalars $\phi_i$, with a coupling to ${\cal O}_T$ needed to make it possible to find vacua with small enough cosmological constant. We investigate necessary and sufficient conditions for the extendibility and boundedness of Gaussian curvature, Mean curvature and principal curvatures near all types of singularities on fronts. We also study the convergence to infinite limits of these geometrical invariants and show how this is tightly related to a particular property of uniform approximation of fronts by parallel surfaces.

Permeability is the key parameter for quantifying fluid flow in porous rocks. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of the connected pore space allows, in principle, to predict the permeability of a rock sample. However, limitations in feature resolution and approximations at microscopic scales have so far precluded systematic upscaling of permeability predictions. Here, we report fluid flow simulations in capillary network representations designed to overcome such limitations. Performed with an unprecedented level of accuracy in geometric approximation at microscale, the pore scale flow simulations predict experimental permeabilities measured at lab scale in the same rock sample without the need for calibration or correction. By applying the method to a broader class of representative geological samples, with permeability values covering two orders of magnitude, we obtain scaling relationships that reveal how mesoscale permeability emerges from microscopic capillary diameter and fluid velocity distributions., Comment: Main article: 11 pages and 4 figures. We revisit the model of the laser with feedback and the minimal nonlinearity leading to chaos. Although the model has its origin in laser physics, with peculiarities related to the CO2 laser, it belongs to the class of the three dimensional paradigmatic nonlinear oscillator models giving chaos. The proposed model contains three key nonlinearities, two of which are of the type xy, where x and y are the fast and slow variables. The third one is of the type xz^2, where z is an intermediate feedback variable. We analytically demonstrate that it is essential for producing chaos via local or global homoclinic bifurcations. Its electronic implementation in the range of kilo Hertz region confirms its potential in describing phenomena evolving on different time scales.

We present the prospects for the early (pre-merger) detection and localization of compact-binary coalescences using gravitational waves over the next 10 years. Early warning can enable the direct observation of the prompt and early electromagnetic emission of a neutron star merger. We examine the capabilities of the ground based detectors at their "Design" sensitivity (2021-2022), the planned "A+" upgrade (2024-2026), and the envisioned "Voyager" concept (late 2020's). We find that for a fiducial rate of binary neutron star mergers of $1000 ~\mathrm{Gpc}^{-3} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, the Design, A+, and Voyager era networks can provide 18, 54, and 195s of warning for one source per year of observing, respectively, with a sky localization area $<$100 deg$^2$ at a $90\%$ credible level. At the same rate, the A+ and Voyager era networks will be able to provide 9 and 43s of warning, respectively, for a source with $<$10 deg$^2$ localization area. We compare the idealized search sensitivity to that achieved by the PyCBC Live search tuned for pre-merger detection. The gravitational-wave community will be prepared to produce pre-merger alerts. This paper presents results of Document Visual Question Answering Challenge organized as part of "Text and Documents in the Deep Learning Era" workshop, in CVPR 2020. The challenge introduces a new problem - Visual Question Answering on document images. The challenge comprised two tasks. The first task concerns with asking questions on a single document image. On the other hand, the second task is set as a retrieval task where the question is posed over a collection of images. For the task 1 a new dataset is introduced comprising 50,000 questions-answer(s) pairs defined over 12,767 document images. The third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo took place between April 2019 and March 2020 and resulted in dozens of gravitational-wave candidates, many of which are now published as confident detections. A crucial requirement of the third observing run has been the rapid identification and public reporting of compact binary mergers, which enabled massive followup observation campaigns with electromagnetic and neutrino observatories. PyCBC Live is a low-latency search for compact binary mergers based on frequency-domain matched filtering, which has been used during the second and third observing runs, together with other low-latency analyses, to generate these rapid alerts from the data acquired by LIGO and Virgo. We propose a new broadband search strategy for ultralight axion dark matter that interacts with electromagnetism. An oscillating axion field induces transitions between two quasi-degenerate resonant modes of a superconducting cavity. In two broadband runs optimized for high and low masses, this setup can probe unexplored parameter space for axion-like particles covering fifteen orders of magnitude in mass, including astrophysically long-ranged fuzzy dark matter., Comment: 10+14 pages, 3 figures

We introduce a new approach to the Higgs naturalness problem, where the value of the Higgs mass is tied to cosmic stability and the possibility of a large observable Universe. The Higgs mixes with the dilaton of a CFT sector whose true ground state has a large negative vacuum energy. If the Higgs VEV is non-zero and below $\mathcal{O}({\rm TeV})$, the CFT also admits a second metastable vacuum, where the expansion history of the Universe is conventional. As a result, only Hubble patches with unnaturally small values of the Higgs mass support inflation and post-inflationary expansion, while all other patches rapidly crunch. The elementary Higgs VEV driving the dilaton potential is the essence of our new solution to the hierarchy problem. The main experimental prediction is a light dilaton field in the 0.1-10 GeV range that mixes with the Higgs. Part of the viable parameter space has already been probed by measurements of rare B-meson decays, and the rest will be fully explored by future colliders and experiments searching for light, weakly-coupled particles., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Stellar-mass black hole binaries (SBHBs), like those currently being detected with the ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) observatories LIGO and Virgo, are also an anticipated GW source for LISA. LISA will observe them during the early inspiral stage of evolution; some of them will chirp through the LISA band and reappear some time later in the band of $3^{rd}$ generation ground-based detectors. SBHBs could serve as laboratories for testing the theory of General Relativity and inferring the astrophysical properties of the underlying population. In this study, we assess LISA's ability to infer the parameters of those systems, a crucial first step in understanding and interpreting the observation of those binaries and their use in fundamental physics and astrophysics. We simulate LISA observations for several fiducial sources and perform a full Bayesian analysis. We demonstrate and explain degeneracies in the parameters of some systems. We show that the redshifted chirp mass and the sky location are always very well determined, with typical errors below $10^{-4}$ (fractional) and $0.4 \ {\rm deg^2}$. The luminosity distance to the source is typically measured within $40-60\%$, resulting in a measurement of the chirp mass in the source frame of $\mathcal{O}(1 \%)$. The error on the time to coalescence improves from $\mathcal{O}(1 \ {\rm day})$ to $\mathcal{O}(30 \ {\rm s})$ as we observe the systems closer to their merger. We introduce an augmented Fisher-matrix analysis which gives reliable predictions for the intrinsic parameters compared to the full Bayesian analysis. Finally, we show that combining the use of the long-wavelength approximation for the LISA instrumental response together with the introduction of a degradation function at high frequencies yields reliable results for the posterior distribution when used self-consistently, but not in the analysis of real LISA data., Comment: Some additions and reshaping, matches PRD version

Liquid crystal networks combine the orientational order of liquid crystals with the elastic properties of polymer networks, leading to a vast application potential in the field of responsive coatings, e.g., for haptic feedback, self-cleaning surfaces and static and dynamic pattern formation. Recent experimental work has further paved the way toward such applications by realizing the fast and reversible surface modulation of a liquid crystal network coating upon in-plane actuation with an AC electric field. Here, we construct a Landau-type theory for electrically-responsive liquid crystal networks and perform Molecular Dynamics simulations to explain the findings of these experiments and inform on rational design strategies. Qualitatively, the theory agrees with our simulations and reproduces the salient experimental features. We also provide a set of testable predictions: the aspect ratio of the nematogens, their initial orientational order when cross-linked into the polymer network and the cross-linking fraction of the network all increase the plasticization time required for the film to macroscopically deform. We demonstrate that the dynamic response to oscillating electric fields is characterized by two resonances, which can likewise be influenced by varying these parameters, providing an experimental handle to fine-tune device design.

This paper presents a new model for the task of scene text visual question answering, in which questions about a given image can only be answered by reading and understanding scene text that is present in it. The proposed model is based on an attention mechanism that attends to multi-modal features conditioned to the question, allowing it to reason jointly about the textual and visual modalities in the scene. The output weights of this attention module over the grid of multi-modal spatial features are interpreted as the probability that a certain spatial location of the image contains the answer text the to the given question. Our experiments demonstrate competitive performance in two standard datasets. The work assessed seven classical classifiers and two beamforming algorithms for detecting surveillance sound events. The tests included the use of AWGN with -10 dB to 30 dB SNR. Data Augmentation was also employed to improve algorithms' performance. The results showed that the combination of SVM and Delay-and-Sum (DaS) scored the best accuracy (up to 86.0\%), but had high computational cost ($\approx $ 402 ms), mainly due to DaS. The use of SGD also seems to be a good alternative since it has achieved good accuracy either (up to 85.3\%), but with quicker processing time ($\approx$ 165 ms).

Japanese character figurines are popular and have pivot position in Otaku culture. Although numerous robots have been developed, less have focused on otaku-culture or on embodying the anime character figurine. Therefore, we take the first steps to bridge this gap by developing Hatsuki, which is a humanoid robot platform with anime based design. Hatsuki's novelty lies in aesthetic design, 2D facial expressions, and anime-style behaviors that allows it to deliver rich interaction experiences resembling anime-characters. We explain our design implementation process of Hatsuki, followed by our evaluations. In order to explore user impressions and opinions towards Hatsuki, we conducted a questionnaire in the world's largest anime-figurine event. The results indicate that participants were generally very satisfied with Hatsuki's design, and proposed various use case scenarios and deployment contexts for Hatsuki. The second evaluation focused on imitation learning, as such method can provide better interaction ability in the real world and generate rich, context-adaptive behavior in different situations. We made Hatsuki learn 11 actions, combining voice, facial expressions and motions, through neuron network based policy model with our proposed interface. Results show our approach was successfully able to generate the actions through self-organized contexts, which shows the potential for generalizing our approach in further actions under different contexts. Physics deals with Newtonian particles described by position q and momentum p. The precision of the simultaneous measurement of q and p is limited by the uncertainty relation ruled by Planck's constant. From the uncertainty relation all quantum consequences emerge, including entanglement. On the other hand, Homoclinic Chaos (HC) , that consists of sequences of identical pulses, unevenly spaced in time, entails a non-Newtonian description. Synchronization of finite HC spike sequences (SFSS) display quantum features ruled by a constant different from hbar, yielding entanglement. As a relevant example, we describe how brain neurons generate HC voltage pulses. The space-based gravitational wave detector LISA will observe mergers of massive black hole binary systems (MBHBs) to cosmological distances, as well as inspiralling stellar-origin (or stellar-mass) binaries (SBHBs) years before they enter the LIGO/Virgo band. Much remains to be explored for the parameter recovery of both classes of systems. Previous MBHB analyses relied on inspiral-only signals and/or a simplified Fisher matrix analysis, while SBHBs have not yet been extensively analyzed with Bayesian methods. We accelerate likelihood computations by (i) using a Fourier-domain response of the LISA instrument, (ii) using a reduced-order model for non-spinning waveforms that include a merger-ringdown and higher harmonics, (iii) setting the noise realization to zero and computing overlaps in the amplitude/phase representation. We present the first simulations of Bayesian inference for the parameters of massive black hole systems including consistently the merger and ringdown of the signal, as well as higher harmonics. We clarify the roles of LISA response time and frequency dependencies in breaking degeneracies and illustrate how degeneracy breaking unfolds over time. We also find that restricting the merger-dominated signal to its dominant harmonic can make the extrinsic likelihood very degenerate. Including higher harmonics proves to be crucial to break degeneracies and considerably improves the localization of the source, with a surviving bimodality in the sky position. We also present simulations of Bayesian inference for the extrinsic parameters of SBHBs, and show that although unimodal, their posterior distributions can have non-Gaussian features., Comment: 34 pages, 18 figures

A recent method to certify the classical capacity of quantum communication channels is applied for general damping channels in finite dimension. Bismuth consist of bismuth bilayers that are two-dimensional topological insulators and correspondingly, the surface is an array of edge states. Moreover, topological models, including second order topologic order, predict an interlayer electrical coupling mediated by hinge states. Here we report that angle dependent magnetoresistance measurements of small diameter single-crystal bismuth nanowires exhibit the sequence of magnetoresistance (MR) peaks at Yamaji magic angles and a peak for B//bilayer, indicating coherent transport between layers, and showing that the Fermi surface of surface electrons is a warped cylinder. The MR peaks are associated with magnetic field induced flat bands that are reminiscent of the well-known flat bands in bilayer graphene.
