Multiferroic materials have attracted great interest because of their underlying new science and promising applications in data storage and mutual control devices. However, they are still very rare and highly imperative to be developed. Here, we report an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite trimethylchloromethylammonium chromium chloride (TMCM-CrCl 3 ), showing the coexistence of magnetic and electric orderings. It displays a paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition at 397 K with an Aizu notation of 6/ mFm , and spin-canted antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of 4.8 K. The ferroelectricity originates from the orientational ordering of TMCM cations, and the magnetism is from the [CrCl 3 ] - framework. Remarkably, TMCM-CrCl 3 is the first experimentally confirmed divalent Cr 2+ -based multiferroic material as far as we know. A new category of hybrid multiferroic materials is pointed out in this work, and more Cr 2+ -based multiferroic materials will be expectedly developed in the future., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Organic-inorganic ABX 3 (A, B = cations, X = anion) hybrids with perovskite structure have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their structural tunability and rich functional properties, such as ferroelectricity. However, ABX 3 hybrid ferroelectrics with other structures have rarely been reported. Here, we successfully designed an ABX 3 hybrid ferroelectric [(CH 3 ) 3 NCH 2 F]ZnCl 3 with a spontaneous polarization of 4.8 μC/cm 2 by the molecular modification of [(CH 3 ) 4 N]ZnCl 3 through hydrogen/halogen substitution. It is the first zinc halide ABX 3 ferroelectric, which contains one-dimensional [ZnCl 3 ] - n chains of corner-sharing ZnCl 4 tetrahedra, distinct from the anionic framework of corner-sharing or face-sharing BX 6 octahedra in the ABX 3 perovskites. From zero dimension to one dimension, the high symmetry of ZnCl 4 tetrahedra is broken, and all of them align along one direction to form a polar [ZnCl 3 ] - n chain, beneficial to the generation of ferroelectricity. This finding provides an efficient polar anionic framework for enriching the family of hybrid ferroelectrics by assembling with various cations and should inspire further exploration of new classes of organic-inorganic ABX 3 ferroelectrics.

Molecular ferroelectrics have attracted considerable interests because of their easy and environmentally friendly processing, low acoustical impedance and mechanical flexibility. Herein, a molecular thermochromic ferroelectric, N,N'-dimethyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium tetrachlorocuprate(II) ([DMe-DABCO]CuCl 4 ) is reported, which shows both excellent ferroelectricity and intriguing thermochromism. [DMe-DABCO]CuCl 4 undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition from Pca2 1 to Pbcm at a significantly high Curie temperature of 413 K, accompanied by a color change from yellow to red that is due to the remarkable deformation of [CuCl 4 ] 2- tetrahedron, where the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases correspond to yellow and red, respectively. Combined with multiple bistable physical properties, [DMe-DABCO]CuCl 4 would be a promising candidate for next-generation smart devices, and should inspire further exploration of multifunctional molecular ferroelectrics., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Background: Constructing a three-dimensional (3D) model through non-invasive techniques will greatly benefit the diagnosis and treatment of otitis media. However, such a model should reflect the physiological characteristics of the middle ear; in particular, the pressure-flow responses determine the validity of the model. Objectives: A 3D model of the middle ear was constructed by digital scanning and simulation. The pressure-flow properties in the model were measured to evaluate whether the model could reflect the real middle ear under physiological and pathological conditions. Materials and methods: Computed tomography (CT) scanning data from a healthy woman were input into Mimics 20.0 to construct 3D images of the middle ear. The 3D images were treated with Ansys 15.0 for finite element mesh generation. Msc Nastran 2014 were used for the fluid-solid coupling calculations. Results: The pressure-flow rate in the model resembled a Venturi tube, namely, the pressure decreased with increasing flow velocity, especially in the Eustachian tube. In the absence of the right mastoid process, the differences in air pressure and the maximal velocity in the model were reduced. Conclusions: This numerical model based on CT images of the middle ear recapitulates the biomechanical characteristics of the real middle ear. Significance: This study provides an easy and rapid approach to constructing a middle ear model for diagnosis and treatment of otitis media.

Since the first perovskite CaTiO 3 was discovered in 1839, the development of perovskite has a history of 180 years. The emergence of solar cells (CH 3 NH 3 )PbI 3 has set off the trend of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) materials. Since then, various HOIPs have sprung up and been widely used in various material devices. Among them, HOIP ferroelectrics have gained widespread attention. However, antiperovskite, as a twin brother of perovskite, has been neglected although it has similar structure with perovskite. Here, we successfully found that [C 3 H 7 FN] 3 [SnCl 6 ]Cl has a three-dimensional (3D) antiperovskite structure with the formula M 3 AB. Importantly, the compound exhibits obvious ferroelectric properties with an Aizu notation of 622F6 at 391 K. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 3D hybrid organic-inorganic antiperovskite ferroelectric, which will greatly promote the development of antiperovskite families with more superior physical properties., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The significant Tc enhancement of 110 K in [N-fluoromethyldabconium] triiodide lead caused by the promising design of H/F substitution is the first and unprecedented, opening up an applicable and universal strategy to effectively regulate the Tc working temperature in phase transition materials.

A ferroelectric with a high phase-transition temperature (T c ) is an indispensable condition for practical applications. Over the past decades, both strain engineering and the isotope effect have been found to effectively improve the T c within ferroelectric material systems. However, the former strategy seems to prefer working in inorganic ferroelectric thin films, while the latter is also limited to some certain systems, such as hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics. It is noted that a mono-fluorinated molecule is geometrically very similar to its parent molecule and the substitution of H by an F atom can introduce a chiral center on the molecule to template or stabilize polar structures. Significantly, the barrier of rotation of the fluorinated organic molecules is raised, resulting in a remarkable increase in T c . Herein, by applying the molecular design strategy of H/F substitution to the organic-inorganic perovskite ferroelectric (pyrrolidinium)CdCl 3 with a low T c of 240 K, two high-T c chiral perovskite ferroelectrics, (R)- and (S)-3-F-(pyrrolidinium)CdCl 3 are successfully synthesized, for which the T c reaches 303 K. The significant enhancement of 63 K in T c extends the ferroelectric working temperature range to room temperature. The past decade has witnessed much progress in designing molecular ferroelectrics, whose intrinsic mechanical flexibility, structural tunability, and easy processability are desirable for next-generation flexible and wearable electronic devices. However, an obstacle in expanding their promising applications in nonvolatile memory elements, capacitors, and sensors is effectively modulating the Curie temperature ( T c ). Here, taking advantage of fluorine substitution on the reported molecular ferroelectric, (pyrrolidinium)MnCl 3 , we present enantiomeric perovskite ferroelectrics, namely, ( R) - and ( S) -3-(fluoropyrrolidinium)MnCl 3 . The close van der Waal's radii and the similar steric parameters between H and F atoms ensure the minimum disruption of the crystal structure, while their different electronegativity and polarizability can trigger significant changes in the physical and chemical properties. As expected, the T c gets successfully increased from 295 K in (pyrrolidinium)MnCl 3 to 333 K in these two homochiral compounds. Such a dramatic enhancement of 38 K signifies an important step toward designing high- T c molecular ferroelectrics. In the light of the conceptually new idea of fluorine substitution, one could look forward to a continuous succession of new molecular ferroelectric materials and technology developments.

Antiperovskites have developed to be one kind of important functional material over the past few decades, showing abundant physical properties such as negative thermal expansion and superconductivity, etc. However, antiperovskite ferroelectrics have scarcely been discovered in inorganic ceramics. In this article, we report a new organic-inorganic hybrid antiperovskite ferroelectric [(CH 3 ) 2 (F-CH 2 CH 2 )NH] 3 (CdCl 3 )(CdCl 4 ) based on the strategy of molecular design. The replacement of one methyl in [(CH 3 ) 3 NH]CdCl 3 with ethyl produces the lower symmetric [(CH 3 ) 2 (CH 2 CH 3 )NH]CdCl 3 with nonpolar perovskite structure, while the polar hexagonal antiperovskite structure with the formula of X 3 BA (where X = [(CH 3 ) 2 (F-CH 2 CH 2 )NH] + , B = [CdCl 3 ] - , and A = [CdCl 4 ] 2- ) was received after further fluoridation of the ethyl group. Therefore, fluoridation successfully achieves the structural transformation from perovskite to antiperovskite, as well as the significant changes in physical properties from nonferroelectric to ferroelectric. The antiperovskite [(CH 3 ) 2 (F-CH 2 CH 2 )NH] 3 (CdCl 3 )(CdCl 4 ) exhibits typical ferroelectric phase transition above room temperature ( T c = 333 K) including thermal anomalies, dielectric transitions, and second harmonic generation (SHG) responses. Moreover, lower coercive fields and easy polarization switching are observed by the measurements of hysteresis loops and ferroelectric domains. The saturated polarization ( P s ) of 4.0 μC/cm 2 is almost 10 times as large as those recently discovered antiperovskite molecular ferroelectrics. This finding provides a novel strategy to design and explore more antiperovskite organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric materials.

The perovskite structure is rich in ferroelectricity. In contrast, ferroelectric antiperovskites have been scarcely confirmed experimentally since the discovery of M 3 AB-type antiperovskites in the 1930s. Ferroelectricity is now revealed in an organic-inorganic hybrid X 3 AB antiperovskite structure, which exhibits a clear ferroelectric phase transition 6/mmmF6mm with a high Curie point of 480 K. The physical properties across the phase transition are obviously changed along with the symmetry requirements, providing solid experimental evidence for the ferroelectric phase transition. More interestingly, the discovered antiperovskite shows intense photoluminescence and triboluminescence properties. The confirmation of the triboluminescent ferroelectric antiperovskite will open new avenues to explore excellent optoelectronic properties in the antiperovskite family., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics are widely used in nonvolatile memory elements, capacitors, and sensors because of their excellent ferroelectric and other properties. Organic ferroelectrics are desirable for their mechanical flexibility, low weight, environmentally friendly processing, and low processing temperatures. Although almost a century has passed since the first ferroelectric, Rochelle salt, was discovered, examples of highly desirable organic perovskite ferroelectrics are lacking. We found a family of metal-free organic perovskite ferroelectrics with the characteristic three-dimensional structure, among which MDABCO ( N -methyl- N' -diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium)-ammonium triiodide has a spontaneous polarization of 22 microcoulombs per square centimeter [close to that of barium titanate (BTO)], a high phase transition temperature of 448 kelvins (above that of BTO), and eight possible polarization directions. Molecular bistable dielectric switches represent a class of highly desirable intelligent materials due to their sensitive switchable responses, simple and environmentally friendly processing, light weights, and mechanical flexibility. However, most of these switches can only work at a very low temperature, extremely limiting their potential applications. Herein, three layered organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite-type compounds of the general formula A2BX4, [NH3(CH2)2Cl]2[CdCl3Br] (1), [NH3(CH2)2Cl]2[CdCl4] (2) and [NH3(CH2)2Cl]2[CdBr4] (3), which display sensitive dielectric switching reversibility and remarkable switching anti-fatigue, have been successfully designed. Differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements for 1 confirm its reversible phase transition at around 166 K. Through anion modulation, the phase transition temperatures of 2 and 3 can be greatly improved up to 237 K and 254 K, respectively. Structural analysis discloses that the phase transition temperature's shifts may result from the differences among the inorganic frameworks. Moreover, due to the significant order-disorder transitions of ammonium cations, the permittivities of 1, 2 and 3 change abruptly at around the phase transition points, making them excellent stimuli-responsive electrical switches. Such an anion-modulated method will open up new possibilities of highly efficiently tuning the phase transition temperature of molecular bistable dielectric switches.

Narrow band gaps and excellent ferroelectricity are intrinsically paradoxical in ferroelectrics as the leakage current caused by an increase in the number of thermally excited carriers will lead to a deterioration of ferroelectricity. A new molecular ferroelectric, hexane-1,6-diammonium pentaiodobismuth (HDA-BiI 5 ), was now developed through band gap engineering of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. It features an intrinsic band gap of 1.89 eV, and thus represents the first molecular ferroelectric with a band gap of less than 2.0 eV. Simultaneously, low-temperature solution processing was successfully applied to fabricate high-quality ferroelectric thin films based on HDA-BiI 5 , for which high-precision controllable domain flips were realized. A dual-function material in which ferroelectricity and spin crossover coexist in the same temperature range has been obtained. Our synthetic strategy allows the construction of acentric crystal structures in a predictable way and is based on the high directionality of hydrogen bonds. The well-known iron(II) spin crossover complex [Fe(bpp) 2 ] 2+ (bpp=2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine), a four-fold noncentrosymmetric H-bond donor, was combined with a disymmetric H-bond acceptor such as the isonicotinate (isonic) anion to afford [Fe(bpp) 2 ](isonic) 2 ⋅2 H 2 O. This low-spin iron(II) compound crystallizes in the acentric nonpolar I4‾ space group and shows piezoelectricity and SHG properties. With the flourishing development of (CH 3 NH 3 )PbI 3 , three-dimensional (3D) organic-inorganic perovskites with unique structure-property flexibility have become a worldwide focus. However, they still face great challenges in effectively inducing ferroelectricity. Despite the typical 3D perovskite structure and the ability of dabco (1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) to trigger phase transition, unfortunately [H 2 dabco]RbCl 3 adopts a nonpolar crystal structure without ferroelectricity. Within the larger RbI 3 framework, we assemble N-methyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (MeHdabco) obtained by reducing the molecular symmetry of dabco into a new 3D organic-inorganic perovskite. As expected, MeHdabco bearing a molecular dipole moment turns out to be vital in the generation of polar crystal structure and ferroelectric phase transition occurring at 430 K. It is the first time that the dabco component has been successfully wrapped into a 3D cage to achieve ferroelectricity even through there is intensive research on dabco. This precise molecular design strategy based on the modification of molecular symmetry provides an efficient route to enrich the family of 3D organic-inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics. Intriguingly, the iodine-doped crystal can exhibit intense saffron yellow luminescence with a high quantum yield of 17.17% under UV excitation, extending its application in the field of ferroelectric luminescence and/or multifunctional devices.

To date, the field of ferroelectric random access memories (FeRAMs) is mainly dominated by inorganic ferroelectric thin films like Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 , which suffer from the issues of environmental harmfulness, high processing temperatures, and high fabrication costs. In these respects, molecular ferroelectric thin films are particularly advantageous and thus become promising alternatives to the conventional inorganic ones. For the prospect of FeRAMs applications, they should fulfill the requirements of effective polarization switching and low-voltage, high-speed operation. Despite recent advancements, molecular ferroelectric thin films with such high performance still remain a huge blank. Herein we present the first example of a large-area continuous biaxial molecular ferroelectric thin film that gets very close to the goal of application in FeRAMs: [Hdabco]BF 4 (dabco = diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane). In addition to excellent film performance, it is the coexistence of a low coercive voltage of ∼12 V and ultrafast polarization switching at a significantly high frequency of 20 kHz that affords [Hdabco]BF 4 considerable potential for memory devices. Particularly, piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) clearly demonstrates the four polarization directions and polarization switching at a low voltage down to ∼4.2 V (with an ∼150 nm thick film). This innovative work on high-performance molecular ferroelectric thin films, which can be compatible with wearable devices, will inject new vitality to the low-power information field.

Background/aims: The aim of this study was to explore the potential role of serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in the pathogenic process of chronic hepatitis B., Methodology: A total of 380 patients with chronic hepatitis B were included in this study. All patients received the concentrations of serum hs-CRP, Hepatitis B sero-markers, serum HBV-DNA loads, liver function parameters and liver stiffness were measured, and in which 172 patients undertaken liver biopsy and immunohistochemistry analysis., Results: Serum hs-CRP concentration in patients with the chronic hepatitis B (2.38 ± 5.52) was significantly higher than healthy controls (0.60 ± 0.53), P < 0.05. The area under ROC curve in fibrosis S4 and S3 is 0.826 and 0.78. The sensitivity and specificity of hs-CRP for fibrosis S3 and S4 diagnosis were 81.8%, 80% and 73.4%, 76.2% respectively (cut off: 1.01 mg/ml, 1.11 mg/l)., Conclusions: C-reactive Protein are associated with HBV replication, liver damage and fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B, and serum High-sensitivity C-reactive Protein may be a marker for diagnosing significant fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B, and can reflect the severity of liver damage.

Objective: To evaluate left ventricular (LV) function and twist in patients with diabetic cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) by two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging (STI)., Methods: STI was performed in 56 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) (35 with DM only: group A, 21 with CAN: group B) and 34 normal subjects (Control) from LV short-axis view. LV peak systolic, peak early (E') and peak late (A') diastolic circumferential strain in 18 myocardial segments were measured at the levels of mitral annulus, papillary muscle and apex and the rotation at mitral annulus and apex levels were also measured. LV peak systolic and the ratio of E' and A' of global and three levels, twist, untwisting rate and untwisting half-time were calculated., Results: In group A, compared with control group, LV peak systolic radial circumferential strain has no significant difference (P > 0.05), E'/A' was reduced (P < 0.05), twist at aortic valve closure and twist at mitral valve opening were significantly increased (P < 0.05), untwisting rate reduced, and untwisting half time delayed. In group B, compared with control group and group A, circumferential strain parameters [(-12.64 ± 6.49)% vs. (-19.11 ± 9.98)% and (-21.14 ± 10.13)%, P < 0.05] and E'/A' [(0.90 ± 0.35) vs. (1.24 ± 0.47) and (1.98 ± 0.63), P < 0.05] were significantly decreased, twist at aortic valve closure [(19.08 ± 5.62)° vs. (16.57 ± 2.84)° and (14.36 ± 4.06)°, P < 0.05] and twist at mitral valve opening [(13.99 ± 2.31)° vs. (11.36 ± 2.63)° and (9.04 ± 5.63)°, P < 0.05] were significantly increased, untwisting rate [(0.40 ± 0.28)%/ms vs. (0.46 ± 0.14)%/ms and (0.53 ± 0.21)%/ms, P < 0.05] reduced, and untwisting half time [(489.61 ± 97.14) ms vs. (445.21 ± 54.53) ms and (410.60 ± 50.23) ms, P < 0.05] delayed., Conclusion: Speckle tracking imaging could be used to evaluate early changes on LV twist deformation and LV systolic function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Tunable diode-laser absorption spectroscopy techniques have been widely used in many regions, such as environmental monitoring and detection of industrial process, due to their high spectral resolution, high sensitivity, fast time response and nonintrusive character. It's important to obtain absorbance curve and integrated absorbance for gas concentration inversion and line strength calibration in direct-absorption spectroscopy techniques. An approach was taken to process the laser direct absorption spectrum. First a low-order polynomial baseline fitting was carried on sub-regions of the transmitted signal to eliminate the effect of diode-laser output fluctuation and obtain the absorbance curve. Then integrated absorbance can be inverted through line-shape fitting using Levenberg-Marquardt non-linear least-squares fitting method. This approach was verified by experimental processing of absorption lines of water vapor.

Mid-infrared lasers are very suitable for high-sensitive trace-gases detection in that their wavelengths cover the fundamental absorption lines of most gases. Quantum-cascade lasers have been demonstrated to be ideal light sources with their especially high power, wide range of tuning capability and favorable operating condition on room-temperature. The intra-pulse spectroscopy based on a room-temperature distributed-feedback pulsed QC laser is a simple and effective trace gas detective method to detect trace-gas qualitatively or quantificationally. When a long excitation pulse is applied to a QC laser, the laser frequency tunes almost linearly to lower wave number (lower frequency) as a function of time so all absorption spectral elements are recorded during a single laser pulse. In the present paper, the method was introduced, and identification of N2O spectral fingerprint using this spectroscopy was demonstrated experimentally. The thermal chirp from a 500 ns long excitation pulse was applied to a quantum-cascade laser to get a fast wavelength scanning, thus a wave number tuning of about 1 cm(-1) was produced. The N2O absorption spectrum centered at 1 273.7 cm(-1) was also obtained. The measured absorption spectrum is consistent with HITRAN data precisely.

Objective: To analyze the different characters of nasal airflow-field between 10 patients with nasal septum deviation and 20 healthy Chinese people by the method of three-dimensional reconstruction of these people's nasal cavity and numerical simulation of the flow field in these nasal cavity models. The character of airflow-field was considered by analyzing the relationship between the structure and function of the human nose., Methods: Based on the data obtained from the CT images, 10 patients with nasal septum deviation and 20 healthy Chinese people's nasal cavity models were reconstructed by the method of surface rendering. The flow field in these three-dimensional models was simulated with finite element method. The different characters of nasal airflow-field was analysed between two groups of people., Results: The airflow distribution in the nasal cavity model could be acquired from the simulation results of the velocity. The airflow for patients with nasal septum deviation mainly passed through the broad nasal cavity, especially in the middle part of meatus of nose. In the healthy people group, the airflow mainly passed through the main side of the nasal cavity, especially in the middle and inferior part of the meatus of nose. The pressure value at any point in the nasal cavity model could be obtained from the results of the pressure plot. In the patients with nasal septum deviation, the pressure mainly dropped in the part of the nasal septum deviation, accounting approximately 71.36% of the total pressure drop. In the group of healthy people, the pressure dropped mainly in the limen nasi, accounting approximately 58.78% of the total pressure drop. The nasal airway resistance of the patients with nasal septum deviation was larger than that in the group of healthy people., Conclusions: The three-dimensional nasal airway can reflect the characters of the human nasal airway. It can be used to analyze the change of the aerodynamic in nasal cavity caused by the abnormal anatomy of the nose. This experiment can proof that human nose has the function of self-adaptation, it can build a foundation for the construction of the model of self-adaptation of the human nose.

The potential of hypothermia in reducing neuronal damage has been demonstrated in several animal models of focal cerebral ischemia. The feasibility and safety of this technique for acute stroke has been only examined in one study, describing a total of 25 patients. We analyzed the data from 50 consecutive patients with acute stroke treated with moderate hypothermia in neurocritical care units of 4 university clinics to evaluate the feasibility and safety of moderate hypothermia.
