361. War and Peace in Semantic Aspect of Philosophy : Issues of Methodology

Abstract

The main objective of the paper is to explore how to cognize war and peace. In order to reach this objective, the notions of "war" and "peace" are placed within semantic space of philosophy, which has formal logical, existential, ontological, axiological, praxeological, and, finally, epistemological facets. This approach leads the author to the conclusion that war can be studied by empirical sciences' methods, but peace can be either the subject of philosophical discourses or constructed through "social engineering". 385. Reflections of an Online Geographic Information Systems Course Based on Open Source Software

Abstract

This article summarizes the experience of offering an online introductory course on geographic information systems (GIS) that utilizes available free/libre and open source software (FOSS). Two primary objectives are to (a) reach students in developing countries and (b) to help move forward the development of an open-content GIS curriculum as part of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo; OSGeo.org) educational effort. Course design, key software (QGIS, GRASS, PostgreSQL//PostGIS), and online delivery methods are described. Results and factors leading to a low course-completion rate are discussed. Contributing factors include (a) a for-credit versus no-credit decision and (b) technical issues. Recommendations for others considering online offerings and for the OSGeo educational effort are provided.

Abstract

The first evidence for the Friedel-Crafts acylation of alkenes in zeolite catalyst through acylium cation, generated in situ from olefin and CO in H-ZSM-5 pores at ambient temperature, is presented as it is reported that olefins indeed interact with CO on H-ZSM-5 to generate unsaturated ketones and cyclic carboxonium ions. This reveals the potential of acidic zeolites as catalysts for the synthesis of carbonyl with organics from olefins and carbon monoxide.

Abstract

"The primary goal of our teaching agenda is to expose students to OS software and participation in open source and open content projects. To accomplish this, we have taught undergraduate and graduate level geographic information systems (GIS) courses based on open source GIS software (both in the classroom at the University of Massachusetts and online)" One significant contribution in this effort has been to develop a set of (Creative Commons Licensed) teaching material on that can be accessed at the Open Source Geospatial Foundation wiki. We are now in the process of updating much of that material for QGIS version .11. Versions of this material have been used to teach the following courses: In the classroom... NRC297S - Introduction to Spatial Technologies, Department of Natural Resources Conservation * Spring 2005, * Spring 2006, * Spring 2007 and, * forthcoming in 2009 And online... * Students from several different countries, including Nigeria, Uganda, Brazil, and the United States participated in our online course. We used Moodle for the course delivery system. "A second element of our teaching effort is to learn from and study, in a 'real' situation, how to develop and participate in an open content collaboration." To that end, PI Schweik has been leading an international effort to develop open content educational material in open source GIS as part of the Open Geospatial Foundation's educational initiative (see http://www.osgeo.org/education). We have worked to mobilize a globally distributed group of GIS educators to build this open content collaborative effort. As of October 2008, we have inventoried over 45 different sets of open source educational material (listed at http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Educational_Content_Inventory). We have also: * Investigated potential format standards for educational material (e.g., Apache Docbook, Open Office Writer, etc.) * Implemented a content management system (Subversion) to support the management of educational content

Abstract

Short-lived intermediates arising from the donor-acceptor interaction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) - (S)-naproxen (NPX) and its (R)-enantiomer with the tryptophan amino acid residue (Trp) have been studied by spin chemistry and photochemistry methods. The donor-acceptor interaction has caried out in a model linked system - dyad under the UV-irradiation. Interest in the NPX-Trp dyad diastereomers is connected with the possibility of using them as models of ligand-enzyme binding as long as amino acid residues are located at the enzyme's active centers. It is these residues that interact with NSAID during the binding. It is widely thought that charge transfer processes are involved in the process of drug-enzyme binding. Withing this framework the role of charge transfer in NPX-Trp excited state quenching have been investigated. The analysis of the chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP), as well as fluorescence kinetics and quantum yield in different polarity media has shown that the main channel of NPX fluorescence quenching is the intramolecular electron transfer between NPX and Trp fragments. Electron transfer rate constants and fluorescence quantum yields of diastereomers have demonstrated stereodifferentiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
