As cities are major contributors to GHG emissions and places where people face multiple climate change impacts, their critical role in responding to climate change is becoming increasingly evident. Cities are developing climate change action plans (CCAPs) focusing their efforts on reducing GHG emissions and adapting to climate change impacts. Despite having the highest urban population in the world, there are a few studies on urban CCAPs in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region. This study assessed the level of integration of mitigation and adaptation (IMA) in urban climate change plans across 44 major LAC cities. The level of IMA was measured by the utilization of the IMA index , a comprehensive evaluation framework of indicators. The results showed that more than half of the examined LAC cities have a moderate level of IMA. The study further explored and statistically analyzed 42 institutional, socioeconomic and environmental factors to identify which ones potentially drive or constrain the level of IMA. The basic principles of elemental metabolomics were applied to investigate whether alteration of egg metallome could be achieved after two flavonoids addition, namely hesperidin and naringin in diets of laying hens. A total of 72 hens were divided into six groups: Control (C) (basal diet), E1 (750 mg hesperidin/kg diet), E2 (1500 mg hesperidin/kg diet), N1 (750 mg naringin/kg diet), N2 (1500 mg naringin/kg diet), and VE (200 mg vitamin E/kg diet). The same diet was provided to birds of all treatments, with the exception of added supplements. The diets had the same vitamin and mineral premix; thus, all birds received the same number of elements because no differences on feed intake existed. The egg elemental profile consisted of As, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, V, Zn, and was determined using ICP-MS. Flavonoid supplementation altered the elemental profile. Most notably, in both albumen and yolk, hesperidin increased Ni, Pb, and Sr concentration while it decreased that of Co and Sb. Naringin increased Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and V and lowered the concentration of Co and Sb in both yolk and albumen. Vitamin E supplementation, in comparison to the control, decreased Co in both albumen and yolk and also raised Sb in albumen. Flavonoid presence led to the differences in deposition of certain trace minerals in egg compared to that of hens fed a basal diet or a diet with vitamin E supplementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

State estimation of hydraulics (i.e., pressure and flows) in water distribution networks is an important tool for efficient and resilient operation. However, hydraulic state estimation is a challenging task in practice due to the scarcity of measurements and the presence of several modeling uncertainties. Standard state estimation techniques may produce unreliable estimates with no information of the estimation error magnitude, especially when historical data are used in place of missing measurements. This paper proposes a comprehensive methodology for generating hydraulic state bounding estimates by considering both measurement and parametric uncertainties. The methodology is based on solving the nonlinear interval hydraulic equations using bounding linearization, a technique that restricts the nonlinearities within a convex set, thus converting the problem to a form which is solvable using linear optimization. An iterative procedure improves the bounding linearization, converging to the tightest possible bounds. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methodology produces tight state bounds that can replace Monte Carlo simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The urethra is a usual site of introduction of foreign bodies for autoerotic stimulation. We present an unusual case of bladder perforation caused by foreign body that was self-inserted in the urethra and consequently slipped inside the bladder in a 29-year-old female patient with psychiatric disease. The patient was referred to our department for macroscopic hematuria and abdominal pain. Imaging studies revealed the presence of a foreign body in the pelvic area which had perforated the left lateral wall of the bladder. The foreign body was removed via open cystotomy. In psychiatric patients hematuria and pelvic pain may result from insertion of a foreign body in the bladder usually during masturbation.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the breathing action in front crawl (FC) sprint swimming affects the ipsilateral upper limb kinematics relative to a non-breathing stroke cycle (SC). Ten male competitive swimmers performed two 25 m FC sprints: one breathing to their preferred side (Br) and one not breathing (NBr). Both swim trials were performed through a 6.75 m 3 calibrated space and recorded by six gen-locked JVC KY32 CCD cameras. A paired t -test was used to assess statistical differences between the trials, with a confidence level of p <0.05 accepted as significant. Swimmers were slower (3%) when breathing. Within the entry phase, swimmers had a slower COM horizontal velocity (3.3%), less shoulder flexion (8%), abduction (33%) and roll (4%) when breathing. The pull phase was longer in duration (14%) swimmers had a shallower hand path (11%), less shoulder abduction (11%), a slower hand vertical acceleration (30%) and slower centre of mass (COM) horizontal velocity (3%) when breathing. In the push phase, swimmers had a smaller elbow range of motion (ROM) (38%), faster backwards hand speed (25%) and faster hand vertical acceleration (33%) when breathing. Swimmers rolled their shoulders more (12%) in the recovery phase when breathing. This study confirms that swim performance is compromised by the inclusion of taking a breath in sprint FC swimming. It was proposed that swimmers aim to orient their ipsilateral shoulder into a stronger position by stretching and rolling the shoulders more in the entry phase whilst preparing to take a breath. Swimmers should focus on lengthening the push phase by extending the elbow more and not accelerating the hand too quickly upwards when preparing to inhale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High rates of occupational training-related lower-limb musculoskeletal (MSK) overuse injuries are reported for British Army recruits during basic training. Foot drill is a repetitive impact loading occupational activity and involves striking the ground violently with an extended-knee (straight-leg) landing. Foot drill produces vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) equal to or greater than those reported for high-level plyometric exercises/activities. Shock absorbing footwear aid in the attenuation of the magnitude of vGRF, resulting in a reduced risk of lower-limb MSK overuse injury when running. The potential shock absorbing characteristics of standard issue British Army footwear on the magnitude of vGRF and temporal parameters of foot drill are scant. Therefore, this study sought to determine the magnitude of and examine changes in vGRF and temporal parameters of foot drill across 3 types of British Army footwear. Sampled at 1,000 Hz, the mean of 8 trials from 15 recreationally active men were collected from 4 foot drills; stand-at-ease, stand-at-attention, quick-march (QM), and halt. Analysis of a normal walk was included to act as a comparison with QM. Significant main effects (P ≤ 0.05) were observed between footwear and foot drill. The training shoe (TR) demonstrated significantly greater shock absorbing capabilities when compared with the combat boot and ammunition boot. Foot drill produced peak vGRF and peak vertical rate of force development in excess of 5 bw, and 350 bw·s, respectively. Time to peak vGRF ranged from 0.016 to 0.036 ms across foot drills, indicating that passive vGRF may not be under neuromuscular control. The marginal reductions in the magnitude of vGRF and temporal parameters in foot drill associated with the TR may act to reduce the accumulative impact loading forces experienced by recruits, subsequently minimizing the severity and rates of lower-limb MSK overuse injuries and recruit medical discharges during basic training. Background: The dietary supplementation of livestock with antioxidants to improve the meat quality represents an active research area of high commercial impact. In order to investigate the optimal dosing, analytical methodologies need to be developed in various tissues to evaluate which concentration does remain in the tissue. Objective: We aimed to develop and validate a sensitive and specific methodology for the simultaneous quantitative determination of hesperidin, naringin, hesperetin, and naringenin in chicken tissue samples employing ultra-performance LC–tandem MS. Methods: Lipid extraction using cold chloroform was performed followed by protein precipitation by cold acetone. Chromatography was performed on a C18 column using a ternary gradient of water, acetonitrile, and isopropanol–acetonitrile–acetone (58+40+2, v/v) as the mobile phase. Detection was performed by electrospray ionization in negative ion mode with the selected reaction monitoring technique. Results: Calibration plots exhibited good linearity (r2 > 0.99) over the concentration range from 0.125 to 25 μg/g tissue for the four analytes, and the lower LOQ for the four analytes was 0.125 μg/g tissue. The repeatability as percent relative SD and precision as percent accuracy were <20 and >80%, respectively. Conclusions: The developed methodology was applied for the quantitative determination of hesperidin, naringin, hesperetin, and naringenin in tissue samples after dietary supplementation with 1.5 g/kg hesperidin and 1.5 g/kg naringin in Ross 308 broiler chickens. Highlights: This is the first methodology to access naringin, naringenin, hesperidin, and hesperetin in chicken tissue. To date numerous metabolomic studies have been performed in order to characterize nutritional intervention studies. The aim of the current study was to present a comprehensive pipeline for characterizing the metabolic changes that occur in chickens tissues in response to naringin and hesperidin dietary supplementation. Forty-nine chickens were randomly divided into 3 groups: the first one fed with diet supplemented with naringin, the second with hesperidin whereas the control group was fed by commercial basal diet. After 30 days of administration chicken muscle samples were analyzed by UHPLC–HRMS whereas data were analyzed by the proposed pipeline. Three significant variables were detected to discriminate the control from the group after naringin administration and thirteen variables after hesperidin supplementation. Furthermore, a more detailed pipeline (encompassing multiple internal standards, internal validation of the clustering, extended statistical significance scores and multiple identification procedures) has been proposed aiming towards a more accurate untargeted analysis. The purpose of this study was to quantify the reliability of kinetic variables of British Army foot drill performance within untrained civilians and report the magnitude of vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) and vertical rate of force development (RFD) of foot drills. Fifteen recreational active males performed 3 testing sessions across a 1-week period, with each session separated by 24 hours. Within each testing session participants (mean ± SD; age 22.4 ± 1.7 years; height 177 ± 5.6 cm; weight 83 ± 8.7 kg) completed 10 trials of stand-at-attention (SaA), stand-at-ease (SaE), Halt, quick-march (QM) and a normal walking gait, with vGRF and vertical RFD measured on a force plate. Between-session and within-session reliability was calculated as systematic bias, coefficient of variation calculated from the typical error (CVte%), and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Significant (p ≤ 0.05) between-session differences were found for the vGRF SaA and SaE, and vertical RFD SaA and SaE conditions. Significant (p ≤ 0.05) within-session differences were found for the vGRF SaA and SaE conditions. A mean vGRF CVte% ≤10% was observed across all foot drills. However, the mean vertical RFD CVte% observed was ≥10% (excluding SaE) across all foot drills. The ICC analyses indicated that the vGRF Halt, QM, SaA, and Walk condition achieved moderate to large levels of test--retest reliability, with only SaE failing to achieve an ICC value ≥0.75. The vertical RFD QM, SaE, and Walk condition achieved moderate levels of test--retest reliability, with Halt and SaA failing to achieve an ICC value ≥0.75. It was determined that a single familiarization session and using the mean of 8 trials of vGRF are required to achieve acceptable levels of reliability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The objective of the present experiment was to investigate the implications of mild maternal undernutrition on the post-weaning behaviour of rabbits. Twenty-six dams were randomly assigned to two groups: the control group (C) that was fed ad libitum throughout pregnancy and the undernourished group (U) that was fed 75% of the recommended maintenance requirements between the 6th and 26th day of pregnancy. At the age of 50 and 65 days old, behaviour of rabbits in cages was recorded and rabbits were further subjected to an open-field test; a paradigm used as an indicator of fear and emotional distress. There were only limited differences between the examined groups in the exhibition of behaviour in the cages; values for frequencies of eating and drinking were higher in the controls compared to the prenatally undernourished rabbits (P <0.05). Duration of drinking appeared to be higher in the group of rabbits born from undernourished does at the age of 50 days compared to the other groups (P <0.05). Duration of resting and comfort behaviours was significantly increased at the age of 65 days in both groups (P <0.05 and P <0.01, respectively). In both groups, a decreased activity of rabbits during the light period was observed (as expected), whereas a reduction in frequencies of eating and drinking, and duration of locomotory and investigatory behaviours was observed at the age of 65 days (P <0.05). Rabbits born to undernourished does displayed reduced rates of the sitting still and standing stretched behaviours compared to the controls during the implementation of the open-field test (P <0.05). No other significant differences in the exhibition of the examined behaviours were found between the treatment groups. Although some differences were found in specific behavioural patterns, it is concluded that mild maternal undernutrition (75% of ad libitum intake) during pregnancy has generally only little effect on rabbits’ post-weaning behaviour. Abstract: Magneli phases [A. Magneli, Acta Chem. Scand. 13 (1959) 5] have been introduced as a unique electron conductive and interactive support for electrocatalysis both in hydrogen (HELR) and oxygen (OELR) electrode reactions in water electrolysis and Low Temperature PEM Fuel Cells (LT PEM FC). The Strong Metal-Support Interaction (SMSI) that imposes the former implies: (i) the hypo–hyper-d-interbonding effect and its catalytic consequences, and (ii) the interactive primary oxide (M-OH) spillover from the hypo-d-oxide support as a dynamic electrocatalytic contribution. The stronger the bonding, the more strained appear d-orbitals, thereby the less strong the intermediate adsorptive strength in the rate determining step (RDS), and consequently, the faster the facilitated catalytic electrode reaction arises. At the same time the primary oxide spillover transferred from the hypo-d-oxide support directly interferes and reacts either individually and directly to contribute to finish the oxygen reduction, or with other interactive species, like CO to contribute to the CO tolerance. In such a respect, the conditions to provide Au to act as the reversible hydrogen electrode have been proved either by its potentiodynamic surface reconstruction in a heavy water solution, or by the nanostructured SMSI Au on anatase titania with characteristic strained d-orbitals in such a hypo–hyper-d-interactive bonding (Au/TiO2). In the same context, some spontaneous tendency towards monoatomic network dispersion of Pt upon Magneli phases makes it possible to produce an advanced interactive supported electrocatalyst for cathodic oxygen reduction (ORR). The strained hypo–hyper-d-interelectronic and inter-d-orbital metal/hypo-d-oxide support bonding relative to the strength of the latter, has been inferred to be the basis of the synergistic electrocatalytic effect both in the HELR and ORR. Background: Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions with complex underlying neurobiology that is still poorly understood. Despite overlapping presentation and sex-biased prevalence, autism and ADHD are rarely studied together, and sex differences are often overlooked. Population modelling, often referred to as normative modelling, provides a unified framework for studying age-specific and sex-specific divergences in brain development., Methods: Here we used population modelling and a large, multi-site neuroimaging dataset (N = 4255 after quality control) to characterise cortical anatomy associated with autism and ADHD, benchmarked against models of average brain development based on a sample of over 75,000 individuals. We also examined sex and age differences, relationship with autistic traits, and explored the co-occurrence of autism and ADHD (autism+ADHD)., Results: We observed robust neuroanatomical signatures of both autism and ADHD. Overall, autistic individuals showed greater cortical thickness and volume, that was localised to the superior temporal cortex, whereas individuals with ADHD showed more global increases in cortical thickness, but lower cortical volume and surface area across much of the cortex. The autism+ADHD group displayed a unique pattern of widespread increases in cortical thickness, and certain decreases in surface area. We also found evidence that sex modulates the neuroanatomy of autism but not ADHD, and an age-by-diagnosis interaction for ADHD only., Conclusions: These results indicate distinct cortical differences in autism and ADHD that are differentially impacted by age, sex, and potentially unique patterns related to their co-occurrence., (Copyright © 2024. Purpose: The aim of this study was fourfold: (1) to quantify acceleration, velocity, and phase overlap for each phase of the stroke cycle (SC) during 200 m front crawl; (2) for each variable, to identify any differences between the four SC phases; (3) to investigate changes in variables during the 200 m; (4) to explore any association between performance and each variable. Methods: Ten swimmers performed a 200 m maximum swim. Four SCs were analyzed, one for each 50 m, using three-dimensional methods. Each SC was split into four phases: entry, pull, push, and recovery. Center of mass (CM) acceleration; maximum, minimum, and average CM velocity; phase duration, and, overlap of a phase of one arm with each phase of the opposite arm were calculated. Results and Conclusion: Phase velocities were positively correlated with performance and decreased during the 200 m. The acceleration data showed high within and between-swimmer variability. When the entry of one arm overlapped with the pull, and sometimes push, phase of the opposite arm, it was propulsive for the whole body. The pull was the slowest phase and overlapped predominantly with the opposite arm's recovery. The push phase was often propulsive for the whole body, regardless of the overlaps with the other arm, and together with the entry were the fastest phases. The recovery of each arm was mostly resistive for the whole body, except the short period of overlap with the opposite arm's push phase.

The present study focused on propulsive forces applied during tethered swimming. The main aims were to identify asymmetries between dominant and non-dominant arms, quantify the effect of breathing on force application and, explore any association between each variable and swimming performance. Fifteen regional level swimmers completed a maximal front crawl tethered swimming test, with maximal kicking, under four conditions: 1) Dominant arm strokes only, no breathing; 2) non-dominant arm strokes only, no breathing; 3) full stroke, no breathing; 4) full stroke, breathing on the preferred side. The outcome variables were: absolute and normalised (force divided by body mass) minimum, mean and maximum force; stroke cycle time and; impulse. The symmetry index was also calculated, and all variables were correlated with the swimmers' season best times in 50 m front crawl. Some bilateral force asymmetries were found, but they did not always favour the dominant side and were not directly linked with swimming performance. There was no strong evidence that force production is higher on the dominant side or that symmetry in force production affects performance. Despite the longer stroke cycle times when breathing, the breathing actions did not affect force production. Faster swimmers often produced higher maximum force values and, sometimes, higher mean force values.

Les Mills BODYPUMP TM is a resistance training group exercise class with a low load, high repetition format. Squat training in BODYPUMP TM has two key variables: depth and load. The study aim was to determine the effect of these parameters on the mean and peak EMG amplitude of vastus lateralis, gluteus maximus, biceps femoris and lateral gastrocnemius. Ten female BODYPUMP TM participants (age 41 ± 9 years, height 161.9 ± 3.8 cm, mass 67.7 ± 7.0 kg) performed 1 × 7 squats under four conditions, representing every combination of two depths (90° knee angle and 125° knee angle) and two loads (23% bodyweight and 38% bodyweight). The main effect of depth was significant for mean and peak activity of vastus lateralis and gluteus maximus, and peak activity of biceps femoris and lateral gastrocnemius. The main effect of load was significant for mean and peak activity of gluteus maximus and lateral gastrocnemius. There was no depth * load interaction. These data can be used to inform BODYPUMP TM programme design and amplify the training effect of participation in group exercise classes.

Objective: Aquatic exercise therapy is used for the treatment and management of chronic low back pain (CLBP). However, to the authors' knowledge, no studies to date have compared muscle activity between different aquatic exercises performed by people with CLBP. As such, this study assessed and compared muscle activity, pain, perceived exertion and exercise intensity between different rehabilitative aquatic exercises., Design: Cross-sectional., Setting: A 25-m indoor swimming pool within a university building., Participants: Twenty participants with non-specific CLBP., Assessment: Twenty-six aquatic exercises in shallow water (1.25-m depth). Muscle activity was quantified bilaterally for the erector spinae, multifidus, gluteus maximus and medius, rectus abdominis, and external and internal obliques., Main Outcomes: Mean and peak muscle activity, pain (visual analogue scale), perceived exertion (Borg scale) and exercise intensity (heart rate)., Results: Hip abduction/adduction and extension/flexion exercises produced higher activity for gluteal muscles. Variations of squat exercises increased the activity of back extensors. Higher abdominal muscle activity was produced with exercises that made use of buoyancy equipment and included leg and trunk movements while floating on the back, and with some proprioceptive and dynamic lower limb exercises. Pain occurrence and intensity were very low, with 17 exercises being pain free., Conclusions: This study provides evidence on trunk and gluteal muscle activity, pain, intensity and perceived exertion for people with CLBP performing aquatic exercises. The findings may be useful when prescribing exercises for rehabilitation, as physiotherapists seek to implement progression in effort and muscle activity, variation in exercise type, and may wish to target or avoid particular muscles. Utilising captured CO 2 and converting it into solar fuels can be extremely beneficial in reducing the constantly rising CO 2 concentration in the atmosphere while simultaneously addressing energy crisis issues. Hence, many researchers have focused their work on the CO 2 photoreduction reaction for the last 4 decades. Herein, the titania hyper-branched nanorod (HBN) thin films, with a novel hierarchical dendritic morphology, revealed enhanced CO 2 photoreduction performance. The HBNs exhibited enhanced photogenerated charge production (66%), in comparison with P25 (39%), due to the unique hyper-branched morphology. Furthermore, the proposed HBN thin films exhibited a high degree of control over the product selectivity, by undergoing a facile phase-altering treatment. The selectivity was shifted from 91% towards CO, to 67% towards CH 4 . Additionally, the HBN samples showed the potential to surpass the conversion rates of the benchmark P25 TiO 2 in both CO and CH 4 production. To further enhance the selectivity and overall performance of the HBNs, RuO 2 was incorporated into the synthesis, which enhanced the CH 4 selectivity from 67% to 74%; whereas the incorporation of CuO revealed a selectivity profile comparative to P25., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) possesses a crucial position in the field of respiratory medicine as there are still unsolved issues in its whole spectrum. One promising tool that is believed to provide answers to various problems in COPD is the exhaled breath condensate (EBC). Its wealth due to its content mirrors the ongoing actions taking place in the lungs and especially the two processes blamed for the pathophysiology of COPD, the inflammation and the oxidative stress. Attempts to connect the products of the analysis of the EBC with the clinical manifestations of COPD such as dyspnea are scarce. Up to date research has shown a positive correlation between the elevated levels of some markers of EBC such as H 2 O 2 and 8-isoprostane and dyspnea, while others present ambiguous results. The severity of COPD also seems to be connected with their increase. The purpose of this chapter is to highlight these findings and present potential correlations. Further research in EBC and its association with the clinical phenotypes of COPD and especially dyspnea is necessary., (© 2021. Purpose : A vertical jump (VJ) is a common task performed in several sports, with the height achieved correlated to skilled performance. Loaded VJs are often used in the training of recreational and professional athletes. The bilateral deficit (BLD), which refers to the difference between the heights achieved by a bilateral jump and the sum of two unilateral jumps, has not been reported for loaded jumps and the findings for unloaded jumps are inconclusive. The purpose of this study was threefold: (a) to quantify and compare BLD in countermovement (CMJ) and squat jumps (SJ), (b) to explore the effects of an additional 10% of body weight (BW) load on the BLD in both CMJ and SJ, and (c) examine the relationship between magnitude of BLD and jump performance in both jumps and conditions. Methods : Forty participants (22 for CMJ and 18 for SJ) performed a bilateral jump and unilateral jumps on each leg with and without an added load equivalent to 10% of each participant's bodyweight. Results : BLD was evident in all conditions, with CMJ BLD values nearly double those for the SJ. The extra load did not affect the magnitude of BLD. BLD had a significant correlation with unilateral jump height, expect for the 110%BW SJ. Conclusions : BLD is present in SJs and CMJs at both loaded and unloaded conditions. The SJs have about half of the BLD observed in CMJs regardless of additional load. Participants who had higher single leg jumps seemed to also have higher BLDs, but there was no evidence of association between the bilateral jump height and BLD.

Background: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorder. Aquatic exercises are commonly used by physical therapists for CLBP treatment and management; however, there are no data on trunk muscle activation during aquatic exercises in people with CLBP., Objective: We quantified activation of trunk and gluteal muscles, exercise intensity, pain, and perceived exertion in people with and without CLBP when performing water and land exercises., Design: The study used a cross-sectional design., Methods: Twenty participants with nonspecific CLBP and 20 healthy participants performed 15 aquatic exercises and 15 similar land exercises. Mean and peak muscle activation were measured bilaterally from erector spinae, multifidus, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, rectus abdominis, external oblique, and internal oblique using waterproof and wireless surface electromyography. Exercise intensity (heart rate), perceived exertion (Borg scale), and, for the CLBP group, pain (visual analog scale) were recorded., Results: There were no significant between-group differences. Significant between-environment differences were found in heart rate (always higher on land), exertion (higher in the water for 3 exercises and on land for 6 exercises), and muscle activation (higher on land in 29% and in the water in 5% of comparisons). Pain levels were low, but pain was reported more than twice as frequently on land than in water (7.7% vs 3.7%, respectively)., Limitations: People with high levels of disability and CLBP classification were not included., Conclusions: People with mild-to-moderate CLBP had similar exercise responses to healthy controls. Aquatic exercise produced sufficient muscle activation, intensity, and exertion, and should not be assumed to be less strenuous or less effective in activating trunk and pelvic muscles than exercise on land. We investigated the rotational effect of buoyant force around the body's transverse axis, termed buoyant torque, during a 200m front crawl maximal swim. Eleven male swimmers of national or international level participated. One stroke cycle (SC) for each 50m was recorded with two above and four below water cameras. The following variables were analysed: swimming velocity; absolute and normalised buoyant force; minimum, average and maximum buoyant torque; SC and arm recovery times. The average value of buoyant torque was higher in the first 50m (14.2 ± 4.5Nm) than in the following 150m (9.3 ± 4.1Nm~10.9 ± 4.5Nm) and was directed to raise the legs and lower the head throughout the race. The change in its magnitude seemed to be linked to the shorter time spent proportionally in arm recovery (first 50m: 27.6% of SC time; next 150m: 23.3-24.4% of SC time). Most swimmers had periods of the SC where buoyant torque was directed to sink the legs, which accounted to 10% of SC time in the first 50m and about twice this duration in the next 150m. These periods were observed exclusively at some instances when the recovering arm had entered the water while the opposite arm was still underwater.

Ambient noise in classrooms may present a serious obstacle to the academic achievement of children. There is relatively little information on noise levels in teaching facilities in Greece and particularly in the island of Crete. The purpose of this study was to provide objective data on the internal noise levels inside kindergartens in Crete. The study was conducted in the city of Heraklion in the island of Crete, Greece. Ten kindergartens were selected and a total of 18 classrooms were chosen. Noise levels were measured in occupied and unoccupied classrooms. Noise levels in occupied classrooms ranged from 71.6 to 82.9 dBA with an average of 75.8 dBA. Noise levels in empty classrooms varied from 48.2 to 59.6 dBA with an average of 53.1 dBA. All values are well above international standards. Excessive classroom noise seems to be very common in kindergartens. Results may indicate that school facilities are not built in compliance with international standards. School administrators and local authorities should become aware of the problem, and make any necessary interventions to improve the learning capabilities of children.

An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of supplementing feed with hesperidin or α-tocopheryl acetate on lambs' growth performance, carcass and meat characteristics. Sixteen male lambs were randomly assigned to four groups. One of the groups served as control and was given a basal diet, whereas the other three groups were given the same diet further supplemented with hesperidin at 1500 mg/kg, or hesperidin at 3000 mg/kg, or α-tocopheryl acetate at 200 mg/kg. At the end of the experiment, lambs were fasted, weighed and slaughtered. After overnight chilling, samples of Longissimus thoracis muscle were taken and were used for meat quality evaluation. No significant differences were observed in final body weight, body weight gain and organ weights among the four groups. pH, color, water-holding capacity, shear force values and intramuscular fat concentration of Longissimus thoracis muscle were also not significantly influenced by the dietary treatments. Glide efficiency, the ability of a body to minimize deceleration over the glide, can change with variations in the body's size and shape. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between glide efficiency and the size and shape characteristics of swimmers. Eight male and eight female swimmers performed a series of horizontal glides at a depth of 70 cm below the surface. Glide efficiency parameters were calculated for velocities ranging from 1.4 to 1.6 m/s for female swimmers (and at the Reynolds number of 3.5 million) and from 1.6 to 1.8 m/s for male swimmers (and at the Reynolds number of 4.5 million). Several morphological indices were calculated to account for the shape characteristics, with the use of a photogrammetric method. Relationships between the variables of interest were explored with correlations, while repeated-measures ANOVA was used to assess within-group differences between different velocities for each gender group. Glide efficiency of swimmers increased when velocity decreased. Some morphological indices and postural angles showed a significant correlation with glide efficiency. The glide coefficient was significantly correlated to the chest to waist taper index for both gender groups. For the male group, the glide coefficient correlated significantly to the fineness ratio of upper body, the chest to hip cross-section. For the female group the glide coefficient had a significant correlation with the waist to hip taper index. The findings suggested that gliding efficiency was more dependent on shape characteristics and appropriate postural angles rather than being dependent on size characteristics.

The effects of breathing on body roll have been previously investigated for the roll of the whole trunk only. The purposes of this study were: to calculate separately the shoulder roll (SR) and hip roll (HR) of swimmers during front crawl for non-breathing and preferred-side breathing conditions; to assess the differences in the magnitude and temporal characteristics of these variables between non-breathing and preferred-side breathing conditions; and to examine their association with swimming performance (indicated by swimming speed). Twelve male swimmers who competed at national and international level performed two maximum 25 m front crawl trials: one non-breathing and one with breathing to their preferred side. Performance was recorded with four below and two above water synchronised cameras. SR and HR in both trials were calculated for the breathing and non-breathing sides. The timings of SR and HR peaks to each side and at the positions of neutral roll were also calculated. Swimming speed was significantly slower in the breathing trial (p < 0.01). Swimmers rolled their shoulders and hips to the breathing side significantly more in the breathing than in the non-breathing trial (SR: p < 0.01; HR: p = 0.03). Nevertheless, there were no significant differences in the overall SR or HR between these trials. In the breathing trial, SR was higher in the breathing than in the non-breathing side (p < 0.01) but HR was not significantly different (p = 0.07). In this article, we present a critical review of the swimming literature on body roll, for the purposes of summarizing and highlighting existing knowledge, identifying the gaps and limitations, and stimulating further research. The main research findings can be summarized as follows: swimmers roll their shoulders significantly more than their hips; swimmers increase hip roll but maintain shoulder roll when fatigued; faster swimmers roll their shoulders less than slower swimmers during a 200-m swim; roll asymmetries, temporal differences in shoulder roll and hip roll, and shoulder roll side dominance exist in front crawl swimming, but there is no evidence to suggest that they affect swimming performance; and buoyancy contributes strongly to generating body roll in front crawl swimming. Based on and stimulated by current knowledge, future research should focus on the following areas: calculation of body roll for female swimmers and for backstroke swimming; differences in body roll between breathing and non-breathing cycles; causes of body roll asymmetries and their relation to motor laterality; body roll analysis across a wide range of velocities and swimming distances; exploration of the association between body roll and the magnitude and direction of propulsive/resistive forces developed during the stroke cycle; and the influence of kicking actions on the generation of body roll.

The purpose of this study was to establish the rhythm characteristics of skilled front crawl swimmers using a six-beat kick. These included the amplitudes of the first three Fourier harmonics (H1, H2, H3) and their percent contributions to power contained in the angular displacement signals of the shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles with respect to the longitudinal axis in line with the swimming direction. Three-dimensional video data of seven national/international level swimmers were collected during simulated 200m front crawl races in which swimmers maintained six-beat kicking patterns. Swimmers differed in all variables but had small variability across the four 50m laps. Modest changes occurred during the 200m, with the exception of shoulder roll, which remained constant and was represented almost entirely by a single sinusoid (H1). Changes across laps reached significance for swimming speed, stroke rate, hip roll, and H3 wave velocity between the knee and ankle. A H3 body wave of moderate and increasing velocity travelled caudally from hip to ankle. In the light of existing knowledge of aquatic locomotion this was compatible with the goal of generating propulsion in an efficient manner.

Purpose: To determine accurately the magnitude and changes in shoulder roll (SR) and hip roll (HR) throughout a 200-m maximum front crawl swim and whether SR and HR were associated with swimming velocity (V). Bilateral roll asymmetries and timing differences between SR and HR were also investigated., Methods: Ten male swimmers of national/international level performed a maximum 200-m front crawl swim. Performance was recorded with four below- and two above-water synchronized cameras and four nonbreathing stroke cycles (SC) were analyzed (one for each 50 m). The purpose of this randomized controlled study was to explore the effectiveness of an educational intervention on nurses' attitudes and knowledge regarding pain management and to explore associations with nurses' characteristics. A four Solomon group experimental design was employed to assess the effect of the intervention and potential effects of pre-intervention testing. One hundred and twelve nurses were randomized to two intervention and two control groups. The intervention was based on viewing a series of educational videotapes and case scenarios. The Validated Hellenic version of the Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (GV-NKASRP) was used. Pre-intervention scores revealed various limitations in regard to pain assessment and management. At the pre-test, the average number of correct answers was 17.58+/-7.58 (45.1%+/-19.3% of total questions). Pre-intervention scores differed significantly among participants with different educational backgrounds (P < 0.0001). A significant effect of pain education on total knowledge scores as well as regarding specific questions was detected. Intervention group participants provided 6.11+/-5.55 additional correct answers (15.66%+/-14.23% improvement, P < 0.0001), and they exhibited significantly improved post-test scores compared to controls (26.49+/-5.24 vs. 18.75+/-4.48; P < 0.0001). A potential negative effect of pre-test on knowledge gain for specific items and for total scores was detected. These findings suggest low pre-test knowledge scores among Hellenic oncology nurses and a significant effect of the intervention.

The objective of this study was to highlight the problems that arise during the reproduction between thin-tailed rams and fat-tailed ewes. At the same time, particular emphasis laid on the influence of sheep breed, sheep age, time after ram introduction and day of the ewe estrus cycle on ram and ewe sexual behaviour. Rams were subjected to sexual performance tests by being individually exposed to 12 ewes for 3 h daily, 19 consecutive days. The 16 rams of the experiment were separated according to their age (9 and 21 months old) and breed (Chios and Karagouniki), and the 96 ewes of Chios fat-tailed breed, were divided by age (9 and 21 months old). The main characteristics of courtship behaviour, like sniffing, nudging, flehmen response and following were recorded and studied in detail. Mature Chios rams, which were the only one with previous experience of Chios ewes, exhibited higher rates of sexual interest per ewe than the other rams (P < 0.05). On the other hand, rams sniffed and nudged more young than mature ewes (P < 0.05), probably due to the fact that young ewes did not express intense symptoms of estrus. Young rams exhibited substandard sexual interest towards mature ewes, when they first came in contact with them (P < 0.05). In general, Karagouniki thin-tailed rams exhibited reduced rates of mating behaviour when they courted with Chios fat-tailed ewes in comparison with Chios rams (P < 0.05). Moreover, as the time after ram introduction passed, the frequency and duration of sexual behaviour components decreased (P < 0.001). Finally, the effect of the day of the experiment was only significant in the case of sniffing, which increased during the first 2 days and then declined and stabilized (P < 0.01). As it was demonstrated, ram age and ram breed played a fundamental role in the exhibition of sexual interest elements.

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether intima-media thickness (IMT) predicts the presence of the coronary artery lesions independent of other risk factors including clinic blood pressure (BP), parameters of 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring, body mass index, serum cholesterol, and glucose levels. The study population consisted of 390 consecutive subjects who had recently undergone coronary arteriography; 51 subjects with no measurable lesions in their coronary arteries (control group) and 339 subjects with coronary artery lesions (coronary artery disease [CAD] group). Mean IMT of the common carotid artery (MCCA) and internal carotid artery (MICA) were significantly higher in subjects with CAD compare control subjects (P < .0001). Carotid IMT could predict the presence of coronary artery lesions independently of clinic or ambulatory BP values, BMI, serum cholesterol, and glucose levels (P < .01). Carotid IMT predicted the presence of significant coronary artery lesions with cutoff values 0.85 and 0.80 for MICA and MCCA, respectively. The IMT could be a clinical useful test for the presence of significant coronary artery lesions.
