LiCu_{3}O_{3} is an antiferromagnetic mixed valence cuprate where trilayers of edge-sharing Cu(II)O (3d^{9}) are sandwiched in between planes of Cu(I) (3d^{10}) ions, with Li stochastically substituting Cu(II). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory reveal two insulating electronic subsystems that are segregated in spite of sharing common oxygen atoms: a Cu d_{z^{2}}/O p_{z} derived valence band (VB) dispersing on the Cu(I) plane, and a Cu 3d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}/O 2p_{x,y} derived Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) band dispersing on the Cu(II)O planes. First-principle analysis shows the Li substitution to stabilize the insulating ground state, but only if antiferromagnetic correlations are present. Li further induces substitutional disorder and a 2D electron glass behavior in charge transport, reflected in a large 530 meV Coulomb gap and a linear suppression of VB spectral weight at E_{F} that is observed by ARPES. Surprisingly, the disorder leaves the Cu(II)-derived ZRS largely unaffected. This indicates a local segregation of Li and Cu atoms onto the two separate corner-sharing Cu(II)O_{2} sub-lattices of the edge-sharing Cu(II)O planes, and highlights the ubiquitous resilience of the entangled two hole ZRS entity against impurity scattering.

The magnetic structure of chromium arsenide CrAs is studied with neutron powder diffraction at ambient pressure in the temperature range 1.5-300 K as well as with neutron single-crystal diffraction at 2 K and 0.12 GPa. The material undergoes an anti-isostructural phase transition at T N = 267 K and atmospheric conditions, in which both orthorhombic phases have the same space-group symmetry (Pnma, Z = 4) but different distortions of the parent hexagonal structure of the NiAs type (P6 3 /mmc, Z = 2). The magnetic structure below T N is incommensurate with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, k c ). At ambient pressure, the component k c decreases from k c = 0.3807 (7) at 260 K to k c = 0.3531 (6) at 50 K. Below this temperature, it is basically constant. With increasing pressure at 2 K, k c is also constant within standard uncertainties [k c = 0.353 (2)]. For the analysis of the magnetic structure, a group-theoretical approach based on the space group of the nuclear structure and its subgroups is used. To avoid falling into false minima in the refinements, a random search for magnetic moments in the models is implemented. In the literature, the magnetic structure has been determined on the basis of powder diffraction data as a double helix propagating along the c axis. Although this double-helical model leads to satisfactory agreement factors for our powder data, it does not reproduce the intensities of the magnetic satellite reflections measured on single-crystal data in a satisfactory way and can therefore be discarded. Instead, several other models are found that lead to better agreement. Each of them is spiral-like with directional components in all three directions and with no spin-density wave character that would cause a non-constant magnetic moment. In all these models, the ordering of the spins is neither a pure helix nor a pure cycloid. Instead, the unit vectors of the spin rotation planes make an angle α, 0° < α < 90°, with respect to the c* direction. The model in superspace group P2 1 .1'(α0γ)0s yields the best agreement factors in the refinements of the neutron single-crystal and powder diffraction data. Co-based perovskite oxides are intensively studied as promising catalysts for electrochemical water splitting in an alkaline environment. However, the increasing Co demand by the battery industry is pushing the search for Co-free alternatives. Here we report a systematic study of the Co-free layered perovskite famil y RBaCuFeO 5+ δ (R = 4f lanthanide), where we uncover the existence of clear correlations between electrochemical properties and several physicochemical descriptors. Using a combination of advanced neutron and X-ray synchrotron techniques with ab initio DFT calculations we demonstrate and rationalize the positive impact of a large R ionic radius in their oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. We also reveal that, in these materials, Fe 3+ is the transition metal cation the most prone to donate electrons. We also show that similar R 3+ /Ba 2+ ionic radii favor the incorporation and mobility of oxygen in the layered perovskite structure and increase the number of available O diffusion paths, which have an additional, positive impact on both, the electric conductivity and the OER process. An unexpected result is the observation of a clear surface reconstruction exclusively in oxygen-rich samples ( δ > 0), a fact that could be related to their superior OER activity. The encouraging intrinsic OER values obtained for the most active electrocatalyst (LaBaCuFeO 5.49 ), together with the possibility of industrially producing this material in nanocrystalline form should inspire the design of other Co-free oxide catalysts with optimal properties for electrochemical water splitting., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Sodium-ion batteries have recently aroused the interest of industries as possible replacements for lithium-ion batteries in some areas. With their high theoretical capacities and competitive prices, P2-type layered oxides (Na x TMO 2 ) are among the obvious choices in terms of cathode materials. On the other hand, many of these materials are unstable in air due to their reactivity toward water and carbon dioxide. Here, Na 0.67 Mn 0.9 Ni 0.1 O 2 (NMNO), one of such materials, has been synthesized by a classic sol-gel method and then exposed to air for several weeks as a way to allow a simple and reproducible transition toward a Na-rich birnessite phase. The transition between the anhydrous P2 to the hydrated birnessite structure has been followed via periodic XRD analyses, as well as neutron diffraction ones. Extensive electrochemical characterizations of both pristine NMNO and the air-exposed one vs sodium in organic medium showed comparable performances, with capacities fading from 140 to 60 mAh g -1 in around 100 cycles. Structural evolution of the air-exposed NMNO has been investigated both with ex situ synchrotron XRD and Raman. High-entropy materials (HEMs) represent a new class of solid solutions containing at least five different elements. Their compositional diversity makes them promising as platforms for the development of functional materials. We synthesized new HEMs in a mullite-type structure and present five compounds, i.e., Bi 2 (Al 0.25 Ga 0.25 Fe 0.25 Mn 0.25 ) 4 O 9 and A 2 Mn 4 O 10 with variations of A = Nd, Sm, Y, Er, Eu, Ce, and Bi, demonstrating the vast accessible composition space. By combining scattering, microscopy, and spectroscopy techniques, we show that our materials are mixed solid solutions. Remarkably, when following their crystallization in situ using X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find that the HEMs form through a metastable amorphous phase without the formation of any crystalline intermediates. Among the materials for the negative electrodes in Li-ion batteries, oxides capable of reacting with Li + via intercalation/conversion/alloying are extremely interesting due to their high specific capacities but suffer from poor mechanical stability. A new way to design nanocomposites based on the (Ti/Sn)O 2 system is the partial oxidation of the tin-containing MAX phase of Ti 3 Al (1-x) Sn x O 2 composition. Exploiting this strategy, this work develops composite electrodes of (Ti/Sn)O 2 and MAX phase capable of withstanding over 600 cycles in half cells with charge efficiencies higher than 99.5% and specific capacities comparable to those of graphite and higher than lithium titanate (Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ) or MXenes electrodes. These unprecedented electrochemical performances are also demonstrated at full cell level in the presence of a low cobalt content layered oxide and explained through an accurate chemical, morphological, and structural investigation which reveals the intimate contact between the MAX phase and the oxide particles. During the oxidation process, electroactive nanoparticles of TiO 2 and Ti (1-y) Sn y O 2 nucleate on the surface of the unreacted MAX phase which therefore acts both as a conductive agent and as a buffer to preserve the mechanical integrity of the oxide during the lithiation and delithiation cycles., (© 2023 The Authors. Even though confinement was identified as a common element of selective catalysis and simulations predicted enhanced properties of adsorbates within microporous materials, experimental results on the characterization of the adsorbed phase are still rare. In this study, we provide experimental evidence of the increase of propene density in the channels of Zn-MOF-74 by 16(2)% compared to the liquid phase. The ordered propene molecules adsorbed within the pores of the MOF have been localized by in situ neutron powder diffraction, and the results are supported by adsorption studies. The magnetic properties of the nickelalumite-type layered double hydroxides (LDH), MAl 4 (OH) 12 (SO 4 )·3H 2 O (MAl 4 -LDH) with M = Co 2+ ( S = 3/2), Ni 2+ ( S = 1), or Cu 2+ ( S = 1/2) were determined by a combined experimental and computational approach. They represent three new inorganic, low-dimensional magnetic systems with a defect-free, structurally ordered magnetic lattice. They exhibit no sign of magnetic ordering down to 2 K in contrast to conventional hydrotalcite LDH. Detailed insight into the complex interplay between the choice of magnetic ion (M 2+ ) and magnetic properties was obtained by a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron scattering, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. The NiAl 4 - and especially CoAl 4 -LDH have pronounced zero-field splitting (ZFS, easy-axis and easy-plane, respectively) and weak ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interactions. Thus, they are rare examples of predominantly zero-dimensional spin systems in dense, inorganic matrices. In contrast, CuAl 4 -LDH ( S = 1/2) consists of weakly ferromagnetic S = 1/2 spin chains. For all three MAl 4 -LDH, good agreement is found between the experimental magnetic parameters ( J , D , g ) and first-principles quantum chemical calculations, which also predict that the interchain couplings are extremely weak (< 0.1 cm -1 ). Thus, our approach will be valuable for evaluation and prediction of magnetic properties in other inorganic materials.

Substituting 2 O 2- ⇒ N 3- + H - in LiLa 2 HO 3 yields dark-brown heteroanionic hydrides, which were synthesized by solid-state reactions from Li 3 N, LaH 3 (and La 2 O 3 ). They crystallize in the K 2 NiF 4 type structure with mixed H/N sites in LiLa 2 N 1.5 H 2.5 and with mixed N/O sites in LiLa 2 N 0.84(6) H 1.56(3) O 1.16(6) . The latter is a semiconductor with small band gap and partly covalent Li-H interaction.

We report the temperature evolution of hydrogen bond (HB) chains and rings in Mn 5 [(PO 4 ) 2 (PO 3 (OH)) 2 ](HOH) 4 to reveal conduction pathways based on difference Fourier maps with neutron- and synchrotron x-ray diffraction data. Localized proton dynamics for the five distinct hydrogen sites were observed and identified in this study. Their temperature evaluation over ten orders of magnitude in time was followed by means of quasielastic neutron scattering, dielectric spectroscopy, and ab initio molecular dynamics. Two out of the five hydrogen sites are geometrically isolated and are not suitable for long-range proton conduction. Nevertheless, the detected dc conductivity points to long-range charge transport at elevated temperatures, which occurs most likely (1) over H4-H4 sites between semihelical HB chains (interchain-exchanges) and (2) by rotations of O1-H1 and site-exchanging H4-O10-O5 groups along each semihelical HB chain (intrachain-exchanges). The latter dynamics freeze into a proton-glass state at low temperatures. Rotational and site-exchanging motions of HOH and OH ligands seem to be facilitated by collective motions of framework polyhedra, which we detected by inelastic neutron scattering.

The crystal structure of BiMnO 3+δ ceramics has been studied as a function of nominal oxygen excess and temperature using synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction, magnetometry and differential scanning calorimetry. Increase in oxygen excess leads to the structural transformations from the monoclinic structure ( C2/c ) to another monoclinic ( P2 1 /c ), and then to the orthorhombic ( Pnma ) structure through the two-phase regions. The sequence of the structural transformations is accompanied by a modification of the orbital ordering followed by its disruption. Modification of the orbital order leads to a rearrangement of the magnetic structure of the compounds from the long-range ferromagnetic to a mixed magnetic state with antiferromagnetic clusters coexistent in a ferromagnetic matrix followed by a frustration of the long-range magnetic order. Temperature increase causes the structural transition to the nonpolar orthorhombic phase regardless of the structural state at room temperature; the orbital order is destroyed in compounds BiMnO 3+δ (δ ≤ 0.14) at temperatures above 470 °C.

The role of the perovskite lattice oxygen in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is systematically studied in the PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ family. The reduced number of physical/chemical variables combined with in-depth characterizations such as neutron dif-fraction, O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), magnetization and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) studies, helps investigating the complex correlation between OER activity and a single perovskite property, such as the oxygen content. Larger amount of oxygen vacancies appears to facilitate the OER, possibly contributing to the mechanism involving the oxidation of lattice oxygen, i.e., the lattice oxygen evolution reaction (LOER). PbMO 3 (M = 3d transition metals) family shows systematic variations in charge distribution and intriguing physical properties due to its delicate energy balance between Pb 6s and transition metal 3d orbitals. However, the detailed structure and physical properties of PbFeO 3 remain unclear. Herein, we reveal that PbFeO 3 crystallizes into an unusual 2a p  × 6a p  × 2a p orthorhombic perovskite super unit cell with space group Cmcm. The distinctive crystal construction and valence distribution of Pb 2+ 0.5 Pb 4+ 0.5 FeO 3 lead to a long range charge ordering of the -A-B-B- type of the layers with two different oxidation states of Pb (Pb 2+ and Pb 4+ ) in them. A weak ferromagnetic transition with canted antiferromagnetic spins along the a-axis is found to occur at 600 K. In addition, decreasing the temperature causes a spin reorientation transition towards a collinear antiferromagnetic structure with spin moments along the b-axis near 418 K. Our theoretical investigations reveal that the peculiar charge ordering of Pb generates two Fe 3+ magnetic sublattices with competing anisotropic energies, giving rise to the spin reorientation at such a high critical temperature.

The substitution of hydrogen for oxygen atoms in metal oxides provides opportunities for influencing the solid-state properties. Such hydride oxides (or oxyhydrides) are potential functional materials and scarce. Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of holmium hydride oxide with the stoichiometric composition HoHO. It was prepared by the reaction of Ho 2 O 3 with either HoH 3 or CaH 2 as a powder of light-yellow color in sunlight and pink color in artificial light (Alexandrite effect), which is commonly observed for ionic Ho(III) compounds. HoHO crystallizes with an ordered fluorite superstructure ( F 4̅3 m , a = 5.27550(13) Å, half-Heusler LiAlSi type), as evidenced by powder X-ray and neutron powder diffraction on both hydride and deuteride and supported by quantum-mechanical calculations. HoHO is the first representative with considerable ionic bonding for this structure type. The thermal stability and inertness toward air are remarkably high for a hydride because it reacts only above 540 K to form Ho 2 O 3 . At 294(1) K and 25(3)% relative humidity, HoHO is stable for at least 3 months. HoHO is paramagnetic with μ eff (Ho 3 + ) = 10.41(2) μ B without any sign of magnetic ordering down to 2 K.

In insulating materials with ordered magnetic spiral phases, ferroelectricity can emerge owing to the breaking of inversion symmetry. This property is of both fundamental and practical interest, particularly with a view to exploiting it in low-power electronic devices. Advances toward technological applications have been hindered, however, by the relatively low ordering temperatures T spiral of most magnetic spiral phases, which rarely exceed 100 K. We have recently established that the ordering temperature of a magnetic spiral can be increased up to 310 K by the introduction of chemical disorder. Here, we explore the design space opened up by this novel mechanism by combining it with a targeted lattice control of some magnetic interactions. In Cu-Fe layered perovskites, we obtain T spiral values close to 400 K, comfortably far from room temperature and almost 100 K higher than using chemical disorder alone. Moreover, we reveal a linear relationship between the spiral's wave vector and the onset temperature of the spiral phase. This linear law ends at a paramagnetic-collinear-spiral triple point, which defines the highest spiral ordering temperature that can be achieved in this class of materials. On the basis of these findings, we propose a general set of rules for designing magnetic spirals in layered perovskites using external pressure, chemical substitutions, and/or epitaxial strain, which should guide future efforts to engineer magnetic spiral phases with ordering temperatures suitable for technological applications.

Using gas sorption measurements at ambient temperatures and in situ neutron powder diffraction methods, we have studied the interaction strengths and coordination geometries of O 2 and N 2 near the non-occupied coordination site (open metal site) in the isostructural MOF structures of the CPO-27-M/M-MOF-74 series (with M = Co, Ni, Mn and Cu). Our experimental observations are compared to periodic quantum chemical model calculations. Contrary to recent computational studies, our results, both experimental and theoretical, unequivocally suggest rather weak interactions between the M(ii) coordinatively unsaturated centers and the adsorbate molecules, being mainly dispersive and electrostatic in nature. As a consequence, they exclude significant orbital charge transfer effects that could lead to superoxide/peroxide formation. Calculated binding energies appear in good agreement with the measured isosteric heats of adsorption in the range of 10-20 kJ mol -1 . These, relatively weak host-guest interactions, lead to a tilted end-on geometry in all of the investigated M(ii)-guest molecule adducts.

The influence of a ligand on the structural, morphological and electrochemical properties of organic-inorganic hybrid nickel diphosphonates was assessed using Ni methylenediphosphonate (NiMeDP) and Ni dimethylamino methylenediphosphonate (NiDMAMDP) as model electrode materials.

In the past years, magnetism-driven ferroelectricity and gigantic magnetoelectric effects have been reported for a number of frustrated magnets featuring ordered spiral magnetic phases. Such materials are of high-current interest due to their potential for spintronics and low-power magnetoelectric devices. However, their low-magnetic ordering temperatures (typically <100 K) greatly restrict their fields of application. Here we demonstrate that the onset temperature of the spiral phase in the perovskite YBaCuFeO 5 can be increased by more than 150 K through a controlled manipulation of the Fe/Cu chemical disorder. Moreover, we show that this novel mechanism can stabilize the magnetic spiral state of YBaCuFeO 5 above the symbolic value of 25 °C at zero magnetic field. Our findings demonstrate that the properties of magnetic spirals, including its wavelength and stability range, can be engineered through the control of chemical disorder, offering a great potential for the design of materials with magnetoelectric properties beyond room temperature.

Cationic rearrangement is a compelling strategy for producing desirable physical properties by atomic-scale manipulation. However, activating ionic diffusion typically requires high temperature, and in some cases also high pressure in bulk oxide materials. Herein, we present the cationic rearrangement in bulk Mn2 FeMoO6 at unparalleled low temperatures of 150-300 (o) C. The irreversible ionic motion at ambient pressure, as evidenced by real-time powder synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction, and second harmonic generation, leads to a transition from a Ni3 TeO6 -type to an ordered-ilmenite structure, and dramatic changes of the electrical and magnetic properties. Pure tysonite La1-xBaxF3-x solid solutions for x < 0.15 were prepared by solid state synthesis in a platinum tube under an azote atmosphere with subsequent quenching for 0.07 ≤x < 0.15. The solid solutions were studied by X-ray, electron and neutron diffractions and by (19)F NMR and impedance spectroscopy. The evolution of the cell parameters obeying Vegard's rule was determined for 0 < x≤ 0.15 and atomic position parameters were accurately refined for x = 0.03, 0.07 and 0.10. The chemical pressure induced by large Ba(2+) cations leads to an increase of the unit cell parameters. Fluorine environment and mobilities are discussed on the basis of the results of neutron diffraction and (19)F solid state NMR. The F1 subnetwork is lacunar; fluorine exchange occurs according to the order: F1-F1 and F1-F2,3. 2D EXSY NMR spectra of La0.97Ba0.03F2.97 reveal, for the first time, a chemical exchange between F2 and F3 sites that requires two successive jumps. The ionic conductivity was evaluated from sintered pellets and different shaping methods were compared. The only structural features which could explain the conductivity maximum are a crossover together with a smaller dispersion of F1-F1,2,3 distances at x = 0.05-0.07.

Direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in deep geological formations is the preferred option for the final storage of nuclear waste in many countries. In order to assess to which extent radionuclides could be released to the environment, it is of great importance to understand how they are chemically bound in the waste matrix. This is particularly important for long-lived radionuclides such as (79)Se, (129)I, (14)C or (36)Cl, which form poorly sorbing anionic species in water and therefore migrate without significant retardation through argillaceous repository materials and host rocks. We present here X-ray absorption spectroscopic data providing evidence that in the investigated SNF samples selenium is directly bound to U atoms as Se(-II) (selenide) ion, probably replacing oxygen in the cubic UO2 lattice. This result is corroborated by a simple thermodynamic analysis, showing that selenide is the stable form of Se under reactor operation conditions. Because selenide is almost insoluble in water, our data indirectly explain the unexpectedly low release of Se in short-term aqueous leaching experiments, compared to iodine or cesium. These results have a direct impact on safety analyses for potential nuclear waste repository sites, as they justify assuming a small fractional release of selenium in performance assessment calculations.

A comparative study of four series of pyrrhotite-type chalcogenide compounds Fe(7-y)M(y)X(8) (X = S, Se) with substitution of Ti or Co for iron has been performed by means of x-ray and neutron powder diffraction, and by magnetization measurements. In Fe(7-y)M(y)X(8) compounds having a ferrimagnetic order at y = 0, the substitution of either Ti or Co for iron is observed to result in a monotonous decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature, while the resultant magnetization shows a non-monotonous behavior with a minimum around y = 1.0-1.5 in all the Fe(7-y)M(y)X(8) families except Fe(7-y)Co(y)Se(8). Suppression of a magnetically ordered state with substitutions in Fe(7-y)M(y)X(8) is ascribed to nearly zero values of Ti and Co magnetic moments, while the non-monotonous changes of the resultant magnetization are explained by the compensation of the sublattice magnetizations due to the non-random substitutions in alternating metallic layers. The difference in the cation partitioning observed in Fe(7-y)Ti(y)X(8) and Fe(7-y)Co(y)X(8) is attributed to the difference in the spatial extension of Ti and Co 3d orbitals. High coercive field values (20-24 kOe) observed at low temperatures in the Ti-containing compounds Fe(7-y)Ti(y)X(8) with y ⩾ 3 are suggested to result from the enhancement of Fe orbital moment due to the Ti for Fe substitution.

We present the first magnetic phase of an ionic liquid with anion-π interactions, which displays a three-dimensional (3D) magnetic ordering below the Néel temperature, TN = 7.7 K. In this material, called Dimim[FeBr4], an exhaustive and systematic study involving structural and physical characterization (synchrotron X-ray, neutron powder diffraction, direct current and alternating current magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity, Raman and Mössbauer measurements) as well as first-principles analysis (density functional theory (DFT) simulation) was performed. The crystal structure, solved by Patterson-function direct methods, reveals a monoclinic phase (P21 symmetry) at room temperature with a = 6.745(3) Å, b = 14.364(3) Å, c = 6.759(3) Å, and β = 90.80(2)°. Its framework, projected along the b direction, is characterized by layers of cations [Dimim](+) and anions [FeBr4](-) that change the orientation from layer to layer, with Fe···Fe distances larger than 6.7 Å. Magnetization measurements show the presence of 3D antiferromagnetic ordering below TN with the existence of a noticeable magneto-crystalline anisotropy. From low-temperature neutron diffraction data, it can be observed that the existence of antiferromagnetic order is originated by the antiparallel ordering of ferromagnetic layers of [FeBr4](-) metal complex along the b direction. The magnetic unit cell is the same as the chemical one, and the magnetic moments are aligned along the c direction. The DFT calculations reflect the fact that the spin density of the iron ions spreads over the bromine atoms. In addition, the projected density of states (PDOS) of the imidazolium with the bromines of a [FeBr4](-) metal complex confirms the existence of the anion-π interaction. Magneto-structural correlations give no evidence for direct iron-iron interactions, corroborating that the 3D magnetic ordering takes place via superexchange coupling, the Fe-Br···Br-Fe interplane interaction being defined as the main exchange pathway.

The synthesis and crystal structure evolution of the double perovskite Pb2YSbO6 is reported for the first time. The structure has been analyzed in the temperature range between 100 and 500 K by using a combination of synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction. This compound shows two consecutive first order phase transformations as previously observed for a subgroup of Pb2RSbO6 perovkites (R = rare earths). The thermodynamic parameters associated with the phase transitions were calculated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the role of the diverse cations of the structure was studied from DFT calculations for the room temperature polymorph. The crystal structure evolves from a C2/c monoclinic structure (a(-)b(-)b(-) tilting system in Glazer's notation) to another monoclinic P2(1)/n (a(-)a(-)b(+)) phase with an incommensurate modulation and finally to a cubic Fm3m perovskite (a(0)a(0)a(0)). The highly distorted nature of the room temperature crystal structure seems to be driven by the polarization of the Pb lone pair which shows a marked local effect in the atomic spatial arrangements. Moreover, the lone pairs have been localized from DFT calculations and show an antiferroelectric ordering along the b monoclinic axis.

The synthesis, crystal structure, and dielectric properties of four novel members of the family of double perovskites Pb(2)LnSbO(6) are described. The room-temperature crystal structures were refined from neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data in the monoclinic C2/c (No. 15) space group. They contain a completely ordered array of alternating LnO(6) and SbO(6) octahedra sharing corners, tilted in antiphase along the three pseudocubic axes, with a a(-)b(-)b(-) tilting scheme, which is very unusual in the crystallochemistry of perovskites. The lead atoms occupy highly asymmetric voids with 8-fold coordination due to the stereoactivity of the Pb(2+) electron lone-pair. Several trends are observed for the entire family of compounds upon heating. The Ln = Lu, Yb, and Er oxides display three successive phase transitions in a narrow temperature range, as shown by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data, while the Ln = Ho shows only two transitions. Different crystal structure evolutions have been found from temperature-dependent NPD and DSC, following the space-group sequence C2/c → P2(1)/n → R ̅3 → Fm ̅3m for Ln = Lu and Yb, the sequence C2/c → unknown → P2(1)/n → Fm ̅3m for Ln = Er, and C2/c → P2(1)/n → Fm ̅3m for Ln = Ho. The Ln/Sb long-range ordering is preserved across the consecutive phase transitions. The room-temperature crystal structure was determined by ab initio procedures from neutron powder diffraction (NPD) and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) data in the monoclinic C2/c (No. 15) space group. This double perovskite contains a completely ordered array of alternating TmO(6) and SbO(6) octahedra sharing corners, tilted in antiphase along the three pseudocubic axes, with an a(-)b(-)b(-) tilting scheme, which is very unusual in the crystallochemistry of perovskites. This is a novel polymorph succession in the high-temperature evolution of perovskite-type oxides. The Tm/Sb long-range ordering is preserved across the consecutive phase transitions. Dielectric permittivity measurements indicate the presence of a paraelectric/antiferroelectric transition (associated with the last structural transition), as suggested by the negative Curie temperature obtained from the Curie-Weiss fit of the reciprocal permittivity.

Nitro-nitrito photoisomerisation is investigated in solid samples and solutions of trans-[Ru(py)(4)(NO(2))(2)]. Using light of wavelength 325 nm 50% of the N-bound Ru-NO(2) ligands can be switched to the O-bound Ru-ONO configuration (nitrito-N to nitrito-O isomerisation) at temperatures below T = 250 K in solids. The population of the isomeric configurations is determined with infrared spectroscopy from the decrease of the area of the nu(NO) stretching and delta(NO) deformation modes. In a frozen methanol-ethanol solution nearly 100% can be converted to the nitrito-O configuration. Upon heating above T = 250 K the Ru-NO(2) configuration is restored. The nitrito-O Ru-ONO configuration can be partially transferred back to the nitrito-N configuration by irradiation with light in the spectral range 405-442 nm. Using absorption spectroscopy on a frozen methanol-ethanol solution, two new bands at 447 and 380 nm are observed in the nitrito-O configuration compared to one at 334 nm of the nitrito-N ground state configuration. The photoconversion is initiated by the metal-to ligand charge transfer transition Ru(d) -->pi*(NO(2),py) as shown by the calculated partial density of states using Density Functional Theory. The calculations yield also the structure of the nitrito-N and nitrito-O isomer as well as the corresponding vibrational densities. The experimental structure of the ground state is determined using powder diffraction.

High resolution neutron diffraction shows that the mesoscopic separation into ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases and the FM transition temperature T(C) in the perovskite manganite (La(1-y)Pr(y))(0.7)Ca(0.3)MnO(3) strongly depend on the quenched correlated disorder. The different disorder strengths are achieved by different procedures of the sample synthesis and are quantitatively characterized by the microstrain-type diffraction peak broadening. The system shifts to predominantly a one-phase state with smaller T(C) as the correlated disorder strength is decreased, supporting the viewpoint that the origin of phase separation in the indicated manganite system is the correlated quenched disorder. The ground state of an ultimately chemically homogeneous sample is FM-like containing about 20% of the AFM minority phase. This FM-like state can be readily transformed to the AFM-like one having < 20% of the FM phase by the decrease of the effective charge carrier bandwidth via oxygen isotope substitution.

The electronic structures of the compounds K[(5-Brsalen)(2)(H(2)O)(2)-Mn(2)M(III)(CN)(6)].2H(2)O (M(III) = Co(III), Cr(III), Fe(III)) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and magnetic susceptibility studies, revealing the manganese(III) single-ion anisotropy and exchange interactions that define the low-lying states of the Mn-M(III)-Mn trimeric units. Despite the presence of an antiferromagnetic intertrimer interaction, the experimental evidence supports the classification of both the Cr(III) and Fe(III) compounds as single-molecule magnets. The value of 17(2) cm(-1) established from AC susceptibility measurements for a spin-reversal barrier of K[(5-Brsalen)(2)(H(2)O)(2)-Mn(2)Cr(CN)(6)].2H(2)O may be readily rationalized in terms of the energy level diagram determined directly by INS. AC susceptibility measurements on samples of K[(5-Brsalen)(2)(H(2)O)(2)-Mn(2)Fe(CN)(6)].2H(2)O are contrary to those previously reported, exhibiting but the onset of peaks below temperatures of 1.8 K at oscillating frequencies in the range of 100-800 Hz. INS measurements reveal an anisotropic ferromagnetic manganese(III)-iron(III) exchange interaction, in accordance with theoretical expectations based on the unquenched orbital angular momentum of the [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) anion, giving rise to an M(s) approximately +/-9/2 ground state, isolated by approximately 11.5 cm(-1) from the higher-lying levels. The reported INS and magnetic data should now serve as a benchmark against which theoretical models that aim to inter-relate the electronic and molecular structure of molecular magnets should be tested.

A nonaqueous liquid-phase route involving the reaction of vanadium oxychloride with benzyl alcohol leads to the formation of single-crystalline and semiconducting VO 1.52(OH) 0.77 nanorods with an ellipsoidal morphology, up to 500 nm in length and typically about 100 nm in diameter. Composition, structure, and morphology were thoroughly analyzed by neutron and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction as well as by different electron microscopy techniques (SEM, (HR)TEM, EDX, and SAED). The data obtained point to a hollandite-type structure which, unlike other vanadates, contains oxide ions in the channels along the c-axis, with hydrogen atoms attached to the edge-sharing oxygen atoms, forming OH groups. According to structural probes and magnetic measurements (1.94 mu B/V), the formal valence of vanadium is +3.81 (V (4+)/V (3+) atomic ratio approximately 4). The experimentally determined density of 3.53(5) g/cm (3) is in good agreement with the proposed structure and nonstoichiometry. The temperature-dependent DC electrical conductivity exhibits Arrhenius-type behavior with a band gap of 0.64 eV. The semiconducting behavior is interpreted in terms of electron hopping between vanadium cations of different valence states (small polaron model). Ab initio density-functional calculations with a local spin density approximation including orbital potential (LSDA + U with an effective U value of 4 eV) have been employed to extract the electronic structure. These calculations propose, on the one hand, that the electronic conductivity is based on electron hopping between neighboring V (3+) and V (4+) sites, and, on the other hand, that the oxide ions in the channels act as electron donors, increasing the fraction of V (3+) cations, and thus leading to self-doping. Experimental and simulated electron energy-loss spectroscopy data confirm both the presence of V (4+) and the validity of the density-of-states calculation. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate strongly frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions between the vanadium ions. A model involving the charge order of the V (3+) sites is proposed to account for the observed formation of the magnetic moment below 25 K.

We have investigated the crystal structure of Ca(BD4)2 by combined synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, and ab initio calculations. Ca(BD4)2 shows a variety of structures depending on the synthesis and temperature of the samples. An unknown tetragonal crystal of Ca(BD4)2, the beta phase has been solved from diffraction data measured at 480 K on a sample synthesized by solid-gas mechanochemical reaction by using MgB2 as starting material. Above 400 K, this sample has the particularity to be almost completely into the beta phase of Ca(BD4)2. Seven tetragonal structure candidates gave similar fit of the experimental data. However, combined experimental and ab initio calculations have shown that the best description of the structure is with the space group P4(2)/m based on appropriate size/geometry of the (BD4)tetrahedra, the lowest calculated formation energy, and real positive vibrational energy, indicating a stable structure. At room temperature, this sample consists mainly of the previously reported alpha phase with space group Fddd. In the diffraction data, we have identified weak peaks of a hitherto unsolved structure of an orthorombic gamma phase of Ca(BD4)2. To properly fit the diffraction data used to solve and refine the structure of the beta phase, a preliminary structural model of the gamma phase was used. A second set of diffraction data on a sample synthesized by wet chemical method, where the gamma phase is present in significant amount, allowed us to index this phase and determine the preliminary model with space group Pbca. Ab initio calculations provide formation energies of the alpha phase and beta phase of the same order of magnitude (delta H < or = 0.15 eV). This indicates the possibility of coexistence of these phases at the same thermodynamical conditions.

Calcium aluminate decahydrate is hexagonal with the space group P6(3)/m and Z = 6. The compound has been named CaAl(2)O(4).10H(2)O (CAH(10)) for decades and is known as the product obtained by hydration of CaAl(2)O(4) (CA) in the temperature region 273-288 K - one of the main components in high-alumina cements. The lattice constants depend on the water content. Several sample preparations were used in this investigation: one CAH(10), three CAD(10) and one CA(D/H)(10), where the latter is a zero-matrix sample showing no coherent scattering contribution from the D/H atoms in a neutron diffraction powder pattern. The crystal structure including the positions of the H/D atoms was determined from analyses of four neutron diffraction powder patterns by means of the ab initio crystal structure determination program FOX and the FULLPROF crystal structure refinement program. Additionally, eight X-ray powder diffraction patterns (Cu Kalpha(1) and synchrotron X-rays) were used to establish phase purity. The analyses of these combined neutron and X-ray diffraction data clearly show that the previously published positions of the O atoms in the water molecules are in error. Thermogravimetric analysis of the CAD(10) sample preparation used for the neutron diffraction studies gave the composition CaAl(2)(OD)(8)(D(2)O)(2).2.42D(2)O. Neutron and X-ray powder diffraction data gave the structural formula CaAl(2)(OX)(8)(X(2)O)(2).gammaX(2)O (X = D, H and D/H), where the gamma values are sample dependent and lie between 2.3 and 3.3.

Mayenite inorganic electrides are antizeolite nanoporous materials with variable electron concentration [Ca12Al14O32]2+ square5-deltaO1-delta2-e2delta- (0 < delta < or = 1), where square stands for empty sites. The oxymayenite crystal structure contains positively charged cages where loosely bounded oxide anions are located. These oxygens can be removed to yield electron-loaded materials in which the electrons behave like anions (electrides). Here, a new preparation method, which allows synthesizing powder mayenite electrides easily, is reported. Accurate structural data for the white (delta = 0) and green electride (delta approximately 0.5) are reported from joint Rietveld refinements of neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and also from single-crystal diffraction. The electride formation at high temperature under vacuum has been followed in-situ by neutron powder diffraction. The evolution of mayenite crystal structure, including the changes in the key occupation factor of the intracage oxide anions, is reported. Furthermore, the stability of mayenite framework in very low oxygen partial pressure conditions is also studied. It has been found that C12A7 decomposes, at 1373 K in reducing conditions, to give Ca5Al6O14 (C5A3) and Ca3Al2O6 (C3A). The kinetics of this transformation has also been studied. The fit of the transformed fraction to the classic Avrami-Erofe'ev equation gave an "Avrami exponent", n = 2, which indicates that nucleation is fast and the two-dimensional linear growth of the new phases is likely to be the limiting factor.

Two novel poly(oxofluoromolybdate) clusters, [Mo6O18F6]6- and [Mo7O22F3]5-, have emerged from systematic field studies on the hydrothermal fluorination of poly(oxometalates). They are accessible via the hydrothermal treatment of Mo(VI)-based precursors in the presence of MF additives (M = Li, Na, Cs, NMe4). The new fluorinated polyanions are stabilized by specific alkali-cation combinations, and their packing motifs can be tuned through the careful choice of cations and synthetic parameters. The [Mo6O18F6]6- anion can be described as a cored and fluorinated form of the Anderson-Evans cluster type. It is stabilized by the interaction of two alkali cations with the fluorinated faces of the ring-shaped anion. The partial replacement of these capping alkali cations by the bulky, organic NMe4(+) cation leads to the formation of [Mo7O22F3](5-)-based compounds. Thus, the extent of fluorination can be controlled through the polarizability of the cationic environment: in the [Mo7O22F3]5- anion, half of the fluoride atoms of the [Mo6O18F6]6- anion are replaced by a capping MoO4 tetrahedron, thereby rendering this anion a fluorinated, lacunar derivative of the alpha-[Mo8O26]4- octamolybdate anion. All compounds have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The templating role of the alkali cations is discussed and explained with the help of electrostatic calculations.
