Abstract

A computer interface technology known as virtual reality (VR) has received a great deal of attention because it provides a new paradigm for interfacing humans to computer-generated synthetic environments. VR is a natural outgrowth of several enabling technologies: workstations, computer graphics, visualization, displays, interactive devices, and software. The user can then directly manipulate simulated objects and leave behind the limitations of the physical world. The goal of this project was to examine VR for potential application in command, control, battle management, and situation awareness. Work focused on establishing and developing an optimized hardware and software architecture for a variety of applications. The purpose of this report is to provide a technical summary of MITRE's findings. The report begins with a user-interface device description and evaluation and a description of the software requirements for integrating these devices in a VR platform and the implications on the software architecture. The report then describes the Virtual Environment Architecture (VEA), the software architecture used to develop a real-time stand-alone interactive VR platform, including rationale, tradeoffs, performance issues, and use of a knowledge-base. Finally, the report describes a scenario developed for demonstrating the utility of the VR platform in a battle management prototype application. ObjectiveTo determine the validity of the Dementia Questionnaire (a semistructured informant interview) for the diagnosis of dementia.DesignComparison of dementia status determined by a telephone-administered informant questionnaire with the criterion standard of clinical diagnosis established by examination and laboratory studies.SettingGerontology Research Center, the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.SubjectsVolunteer cohort of 42 men and 32 women aged 68 to 97 years. Subjects were selected from strata defined by Blessed Information Memory Concentration Test scores, with oversampling of borderline scores (3 to 10).Main outcome measuresSensitivity and specificity of the Dementia Questionnaire in comparison with the criterion standard of clinical diagnosis.Secondary outcome measureInterrater reliability (kappa coefficient).ResultsSensitivity and specificity for dementia were 100% and 90%, respectively. Most false-positive findings were from subjects with cognitive impairment that did not meet criteria for dementia (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Revised Third Edition. Interrater reliability was high (kappa = 0.83).ConclusionThe Dementia Questionnaire can be used effectively in research studies to screen for dementia.

Abstract

Mining companies are increasingly required to focus on effective compliance with environmental regulations and standards during the mine operational stage. It is important to consider: the environmental responsibilities of the companies and their directors and managers; the potential liabilities of the companies, directors and managers for failing to meet these responsibilities; how companies should best go about meeting the requirements; and the legal defences available. The issues relating to corporate and individual liabilities are examined.
