Women's access to natural resources for food and livelihoods is shaped by resource availability, income, and the gender dynamics that mediate access. In fisheries, where men often fish but women comprise 90% of traders, transactional sex is among the strategies women use to access resources. Using the case of Lake Victoria, we employed mixed methods (in-depth interviews, n = 30; cross-sectional survey, n = 303) to analyze the influence of fish declines on fish-for-sex relationships. We found that fish declines affect relationship duration and women's bargaining power. Our results have broad implications for the dynamics of economies dependent on increasingly scarce resources throughout the world.

The sediment marine samples were obtained from several places along the coastline of the Tuticorin shoreline, Tamil Nadu, India were separated for the presence of bioactive compound producing actinobacteria. The actinobacterial strain was subjected to 16Sr RNA sequence cluster analysis and identified as Nocardiopsis dassonvillei- DS013 NCBI accession number: KM098151. Bacterial mediated synthesis of nanoparticles gaining research attention owing its wide applications in nonmedical biotechnology. In the current study, a single step eco-friendly silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized from novel actinobacteria Nocardiopsis dassonvillei- DS013 has been attempted. The actinobacterial mediated silver nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, UV–Visible, XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy. The initial detection of AgNPs was identified using UV–Vis spectrum and confirmed by the appearance of absorbance peak at 408 nm. A Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) result reveals the presence of protein component in the culture supernatant may act as protecting agents. The XRD pattern indicated that the typical peaks reveal the presence of nanoparticles. The TEM morphology confirms the formation of circular and non uniform distributions of AgNPs with the size range from 30 to 80 nm. The antibacterial activity of both isolated actinobacterial (IA) and silver nanoparticles mediated actinobacterial (SNA) of Nocardiopsis dassonvillei- DS013 were done by well diffusion method against selected clinical isolates of bacteria, namely Escherichia coli, Enterococcus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Proteus sp., Shigella sp., Bacillus subtilis, and Streptococcus sp. When compared to isolated actinobacteria, the SNA shows the better antibacterial activity against clinical isolates. Abstract Background The multi-drug resistance transporter ABCG2, a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family, mediates the efflux of different immunotherapeutics used in multiple sclerosis (MS), e.g., teriflunomide (teri), cladribine, and mitoxantrone, across cell membranes and organelles. Hence, the modulation of ABCG2 activity could have potential therapeutic implications in MS. In this study, we aimed at investigating the functional impact of abcg2 modulation on teri-induced effects in vitro and in vivo. Methods T cells from C57BL/6 J wild-type (wt) and abcg2-knockout (KO) mice were treated with teri at different concentrations with/without specific abcg2-inhibitors (Ko143; Fumitremorgin C) and analyzed for intracellular teri concentration (HPLC; LS-MS/MS), T cell apoptosis (annexin V/PI), and proliferation (CSFE). Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in C57BL/6J by active immunization with MOG35–55/CFA. Teri (10 mg/kg body weight) was given orally once daily after individual disease onset. abcg2-mRNA expression (spinal cord, splenic T cells) was analyzed using qRT-PCR. Results In vitro, intracellular teri concentration in T cells was 2.5-fold higher in abcg2-KO mice than in wt mice. Teri-induced inhibition of T cell proliferation was two fold increased in abcg2-KO cells compared to wt cells. T cell apoptosis demonstrated analogous results with 3.1-fold increased apoptosis after pharmacological abcg2-inhibition in wt cells. abcg2-mRNA was differentially regulated during different phases of EAE within the central nervous system and peripheral organs. In vivo, at a dosage not efficacious in wt animals, teri treatment ameliorated clinical EAE in abcg2-KO mice which was accompanied by higher spinal cord tissue concentrations of teri. Conclusion Functional relevance of abcg2 modulation on teri effects in vitro and in vivo warrants further investigation as a potential determinant of interindividual treatment response in MS, with potential implications for other immunotherapies.

Abstract Background The polysaccharide capsule is a major virulence factor of S. pneumoniae in diseases such as meningitis. While some capsular serotypes are more often found in invasive disease, high case fatality rates are associated with those serotypes more commonly found in asymptomatic colonization. We tested whether growth patterns and capsule size in human cerebrospinal fluid depends on serotype using a clinical isolate of S. pneumoniae and its capsule switch mutants. Results We found that the growth pattern differed markedly from that in culture medium by lacking the exponential and lysis phases. Growth in human cerebrospinal fluid was reduced when strains lost their capsules. When a capsule was present, growth was serotype-specific: high carriage serotypes (6B, 9 V, 19F and 23F) grew better than low carriage serotypes (7F, 14, 15B/C and 18C). Growth correlated with the case-fatality rates of serotypes reported in the literature. Capsule size in human cerebrospinal fluid also depended on serotype. Conclusions We propose that serotype-specific differences in disease severity observed in meningitis patients may, at least in part, be explained by differences in growth and capsule size in human cerebrospinal fluid. This information could be useful to guide future vaccine design.

The biogenic synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Aloe fleurentiniorum extract and antibacterial activity of the synthesized AgNPs were investigated. Examinations using ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the efficacy of AgNP biosynthesis using A. fleurentiniorum extract. Purely prepared AgNPs were spherical and moderately sized. The antibacterial activity of AgNPs was evaluated through the agar well diffusion assay using Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium. The biosynthesized AgNPs consistently displayed strong antibacterial activity.

No século XIX a metalurgia do ferro a carvão vegetal se expandiu no Brasil, mais precisamente na província de Minas Gerais, principalmente concentrada junto a centros urbanos consumidores e às fontes de matéria-prima (água, minério e matas). As fábricas de ferro a carvão vegetal se encontravam concentradas na encosta leste da serra do Espinhaço, entre Ouro Preto e Serro. Qual o impacto, no século XIX, da metalurgia do ferro a carvão vegetal para a zona de Mata Atlântica da Província de Minas Gerais, na qual ela se localizou? Além de discutir a metalurgia do ferro, este artigo apresenta uma estimativa da extração de madeira para produção de carvão vegetal e uma mensuração do desflorestamento. Além da literatura sobre siderurgia a carvão vegetal, se utilizou como fonte, os trabalhos de professores e alunos da Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto (EMOP), com destaque para os alunos da primeira turma (1876-1880), que receberam a incumbência do seu diretor e professor Claude-Henri Gorceix de realizarem trabalhos de campo em toda a área em que se distribuíam as fábricas de ferro e mestres de forja. São apresentados os processos de fabricação de ferro e do carvão vegetal no século XIX, os usos da Mata Atlântica e a mensuração dos impactos para a floresta devido às técnicas e processos produtivos. Os trabalhos dos alunos e professores da EMOP indicam a possibilidade de recuperação florestal após encerrar a produção carvoeira em uma determinada área, porém o uso agrícola dessa área para culturas de subsistência e sucessivas queimadas levavam ao predomínio de pastagens, impedindo o reflorestamento e, consequentemente, resultando no fechamento da fábrica de ferro ou na sua transferência para outra localidade de matas. No final do século XIX e primeiras décadas do XX, a demanda de carvão vegetal pela metalurgia do ferro levou a atividade carvoeira a buscar novas áreas de florestas na bacia do rio Piracicaba, afluente do Rio Doce. Esse processo se intensificou e se estendeu ao médio Rio Doce, a partir da ação do Governo de Minas para dotar o estado de um parque siderúrgico moderno a carvão vegetal, no decorrer da primeira metade do século XX.

Abstract Aim: This study evaluated the effects of 10 weeks of combined exercise training on the salivary oxidative profile of hypertensive and normotensive postmenopausal women. Methods: Twenty-six non-obese postmenopausal women were divided into two groups: the hypertensive group (HT; n = 13; 58.9 ± 3.9 years; and BMI of 27.7 ± 4.6 kg/m2) or the normotensive group (NT; n = 13; 52.7 ± 5.2 years; and BMI of 26.9 ± 2.9 kg/m2). They performed 30 sessions of combined exercises over 10 weeks: 45 min per session, three times a week. Resting saliva samples were collected after an overnight fast to evaluate salivary nitrite levels and oxidative stress markers before and after training. Results: Two-way ANOVA showed that there was no difference in the responses over time between the hypertensive and normotensive groups in catalase, superoxide dismutase salivary activity, total antioxidant capacity, or lipid peroxidation. However, superoxide dismutase activity (δHT -0.87 ± 14.53 SOD/mg protein; δNT: 7.13 ± 9.39 SOD/mg protein; p < 0.01) and nitrite levels (δHT 10.32 ± 60.83 mM; δNT 101.92 ± 149.57 mM; p = 0.03) were higher overall in the hypertensive group compared to the normotensive group. Moreover, salivary nitrite levels increased over time (p = 0.04) in both groups. Conclusion: 10 weeks of combined exercise training did not change salivary oxidative stress markers in either normotensive or hypertensive postmenopausal women, although, after exercise training, nitrite levels increased in both groups, even with higher baseline salivary nitrite levels in hypertensive women. Thus, recurrent exercise seems to be a safe strategy after menopause from the standpoint of oxidative stress, regardless of the presence of hypertension.

Dyslipidemia is a risk factor for the pathogenesis of several diseases, such as obesity, hypertension, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. In addition to interfering with serum concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides, hyperlipidemia is involved in oxidative stress increase and reduction of the endogenous antioxidant defenses. The fruit peel of Annona crassiflora crude extract (CEAc) and its polyphenols-rich fraction (PFAc) were investigated against hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia and hepatic oxidative stress in Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemic mice. Lipid parameters in serum, feces and liver, as well as hepatic oxidative status, and enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense systems were analyzed. Pre-treatment with CEAc for 12 days decreased hepatic triglycerides and total cholesterol, and similar to PFAc, increased the high-density lipoprotein level. There were reductions in lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation, as well as restoration of the glutathione defense system and total thiol content in the liver of the hyperlipidemic mice treated with PFAc. The fruit peel of A. crassiflora, a promising natural source of bioactive molecules, showed a potential lipid-lowering action and hepatoprotective activities triggered by reduction of oxidative damage and maintenance of the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant systems impaired by the hyperlipidemic state.

Multiple sclerosis (MS), particularly relapsing MS (RMS), has become a treatable disease in recent decades, and immunotherapies are now able to influence long-term disease course. A wide range of disease-modifying drugs are available, which makes the choice of therapy in individual cases considerably more complex. Due to specific regulatory aspects (partly diverging approvals by Swissmedic compared to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and an independent evaluation process for the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) specialities list (SL)), we issued a consensus recommendation regarding specific aspects of immunotherapy for MS in Switzerland in 2019. Here, we present revised recommendations with an update on newly approved drugs and new safety aspects, also in reference to the risk of COVID-19 infection and vaccination.

Background: Although Charcot diabetic foot (CDF) is a frequent complication of diabetic neuropathy, less is known about the possibility of its early prevention. Methods: A review of the original articles published in English, using the “biomarkers AND Charcot’s foot” criterion, resulted in 33 articles from the PubMed database and seven articles from the Web of Science database. The five duplicates were eliminated, and two independent reviewers selected the most relevant articles, leaving a total of 21 articles. Results: The biomarkers identified are exhaustively described, related to the system of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and their soluble receptors (sRAGE), inflammatory cascade, osteoclastogenesis, and, respectively, osteoblastic activity. Conclusions: This article highlights the importance of potential early identifiable biomarkers that can lead to microstructural changes in the affected bones.

The present study aimed to analyse the published data and to realize an update about the use and pathogenesis of the novel antidiabetic drugs, respectively, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 Ra), and sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i), in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Literature research in the PubMed and Web of Science database was performed in order to identify relevant published clinical trials and meta-analyses that include information about the treatment with novel antidiabetic agents in patients with T2DM and COVID-19. A total of seven articles were included, and their primary and secondary outcomes were reported and analysed. DPP-4i has mixed results on mortality in T2DM patients with COVID-19 but with an overall slightly favourable or neutral effect, whereas GLP-1 Ra seems to have a rather beneficial impact, while SGLT-2i may be useful in acute illness. Even if there are limited data, they seem to have favourable efficacy and safety profiles. The available evidence is heterogenous and insufficient to evaluate if the benefits of non-insulin novel antidiabetic drugs in COVID-19 treatment are due to the improvement of glycaemic control or to their intrinsic anti-inflammatory effects but highlights their beneficial effects in the pathogenesis and evolution of the disease.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship among socioeconomic status, social support, and food insecurity in a rural Kenyan island community. A cross-sectional random sample of 111 female heads of households representing 583 household members were surveyed in Mfangano Island, Kenya from August to October 2010 using adaptations of the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale and the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey. In multiple linear regression models, less instrumental social support, defined as concrete direct ways people help others (B = -0.81; 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.45 to -0.17), and decreased ownership scale based on owning material assets (B = -2.93; 95% CI -4.99 to -0.86) were significantly associated with increased food insecurity, controlling for age, education, marital status, and household size. Social support interventions geared at group capacity and resilience may be crucial adjuncts to improve and maintain the long term food security and health of persons living in low-resource regions.

Objetivo. Determinar el efecto citotóxico e inducción de la apoptosis de Deoxinivalenol (DON) sobre la línea celular de hepatocarcinoma humano (HepG2). Materiales y métodos. La línea celular HepG2 se expuso a concentraciones de 10, 25, 50 y 75 µM de DON liofilizado durante 48 y 72 horas. Posteriormente, la actividad citotóxica de DON se evaluó empleando el ensayo MTT (bromuro de 3-(4,5-dimetil-2-tiazolil) -2, 5-difeniltetrazolio). Finalmente, se analizaron los cambios morfológicos propios de la apoptosis en las células HepG2 por microscopía electrónica de transmisión, después del tratamiento con 50 μM de DON durante 48 horas. Resultados. DON, afecta la actividad metabólica y proliferación de las células HepG2 por encima de los 10 µM, en comparación con el control. La concentración inhibitoria media (CI50) de DON sobre las células HepG2, fue de 42.8 µM DE±1.2 y de 29.6 µM DE±3.1 a las 48 horas y 72 horas de tratamiento, respectivamente. Se observaron características morfológicas de la apoptosis en las células HepG2, como la fragmentación nuclear y celular, invaginación de la membrana plasmática y formación de los cuerpos apoptóticos. Conclusiones. DON, es un agente citotóxico sobre las células HepG2 que altera la actividad metabólica celular, con un efecto antiproliferativo significativo de manera dependiente a la concentración y al tiempo de exposición, e induce la muerte celular apoptótica.

Aims: To retrospectively analyse the Bernese radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) cohort with the goal of developing a prediction score for conversion to multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods: A total of 31 patients with RIS were identified by screening medical records of neurological patients seen at the University Hospital of Bern between 2004 and 2017 for the diagnoses ‘radiologically isolated syndrome’ and ‘RIS’ adhering to 2009 Okuda recommendations. We analysed clinical, paraclinical and magnetic resonance imaging data during a maximum follow-up period of 3 years and identified significant predictors of conversion to MS. Results: Data were available for 31 patients meeting 2009 Okuda RIS criteria. During the 3 years of follow up, 5/31 RIS patients converted to relapsing-remitting (RR) MS. In our univariate analysis, gadolinium (Gd) enhancement, brainstem and cerebellar hemisphere lesions, immune cell count and albumin concentration in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) positivity in serum were identified as significant predictors of conversion to MS. Integrating these factors into our ‘RIS–MS prediction score’ enabled us to calculate a cut-off for prediction of conversion to MS within 3 years with high specificity [1.0, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.84–1.00) and acceptable sensitivity (0.6, 95% CI 0.17–0.93)]. Conclusion: Our RIS–MS prediction score, if validated in an independent cohort, integrating radiological (Gd enhancement, brainstem and cerebellar hemisphere lesions) and paraclinical factors (ANA in serum, cell count and albumin in CSF) could be a useful prognostic tool for early recognition of RIS patients with a high risk of clinical progression to MS.

Food-producing livelihoods have the potential to improve food security and nutrition through direct consumption or indirectly through income. To better understand these pathways, we examined if fishing households ate more fish and had higher food security than non-fishing households around Lake Victoria, Kenya. In 2010, we randomly sampled 111 households containing 583 individuals for a cross-sectional household survey in a rural fishing community. We modeled the associations between fish consumption and food security and fishing household status, as well as socio-economic variables (asset index, monthly income, household size) for all households and also for a subset of households with adult male household members (76% of households). Participating in fishing as a livelihood was not associated with household fish consumption or food security. Higher household fish consumption was associated with higher household income and food security, and was weakly associated with lower household morbidity. Household food security was associated with higher incomes and asset index scores. Our results suggest socioeconomic factors may be more important than participation in food-producing livelihoods for predicting household consumption of high quality foods.

Background: Glucocorticoid (GC) pulse therapy is used for multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse treatment; however, GC resistance is a common problem. Considering that GC dosing is individual with several response-influencing factors, establishing a predictive model, which supports clinicians to estimate the maximum GC dose above which no additional therapeutic value can be expected presents a huge clinical need. Method: We established two, independent retrospective cohorts of MS patients. The first was an explorative cohort for model generation, while the second was established for its validation. Using the explorative cohort, a multivariate regression analysis with the GC dose used as the dependent variable and serum vitamin D (25D) concentration, sex, age, EDSS, contrast enhancement on cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), immune therapy, and the involvement of the optic nerve as independent variables was established. Results: In the explorative cohort, 113 MS patients were included. 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25D) serum concentration and the presence of optic neuritis were independent predictors of the GC dose needed to treat MS relapses [(25D): −25.95 (95% confidence interval (CI)): −47.40 to −4.49; p = 0.018; optic neuritis: 2040.51 (95% CI: 584.64–3496.36), p = 0.006]. Validation of the multivariate linear regression model was performed within a second cohort. Here, the predicted GC dose did not differ significantly from the dose administered in clinical routine (mean difference: −843.54; 95% CI: −2078.08–391.00; n = 30, p = 0.173). Conclusion: Our model could predict the GC dose given in clinical, routine MS relapse care, above which clinicians estimate no further benefit. Further studies should validate and improve our algorithm to help the implementation of predictive models in GC dosing.

Audit is an indispensable mechanism for developing and sustaining trust in accounting information and thus in efficient capital markets. In emerging markets, current practices require the auditor to be effective and efficient because users rely heavily and need the timely information certified by auditors. However, these practices do not meet expectations, and more research into the development and strengthening of audit practices is required. Given that audit effectiveness and efficiency are crucial components for most accounting/auditing research models and the lack of readily available data in well-known databases (e.g., DataStream; OSIRIS; Audit Analytics), this dataset consists of longitudinal data for the variables most used in prior research for measuring the effectiveness and efficiency of audit. The dataset includes data for audit report lag, audit fees, auditor type, auditor tenure, and audit opinion for firms listed in the Omani capital market. It also details data for audit firms’ names and industry affiliations to extract further related variables such as industry expertise, client importance, independence, and big4/second-tier audit firms analysis, which are measured from the researcher’s perspective. The collection process identifies all listed firms for the period 2005-2019 (1,865 observations), with 1,117 observations in the final sample. Sources such as audit reports, corporate governance reports, the OSIRIS database, and the capital market website have been used to acquire the data. This dataset is valid for research into audit quality, audit efficiency, financial reporting quality, audit regulation changes, and external corporate governance.
