User-based KNN recommender systems (UserKNN) utilize the rating data of a target user's k nearest neighbors in the recommendation process. This, however, increases the privacy risk of the neighbors, since the recommendations could expose the neighbors' rating data to other users or malicious parties. To reduce this risk, existing work applies differential privacy by adding randomness to the neighbors' ratings, which unfortunately reduces the accuracy of UserKNN. In this work, we introduce ReuseKNN, a novel differentially private KNN-based recommender system. The main idea is to identify small but highly reusable neighborhoods so that (i) only a minimal set of users requires protection with differential privacy and (ii) most users do not need to be protected with differential privacy since they are only rarely exploited as neighbors. In our experiments on five diverse datasets, we make two key observations. Firstly, ReuseKNN requires significantly smaller neighborhoods and, thus, fewer neighbors need to be protected with differential privacy compared with traditional UserKNN. Secondly, despite the small neighborhoods, ReuseKNN outperforms UserKNN and a fully differentially private approach in terms of accuracy. In this survey article, we give an overview of methods for music similarity estimation and music recommendation based on music context data. Unlike approaches that rely on music content and have been researched for almost two decades, music-contextbased (or contextual) approaches to music retrieval are a quite recent field of research within music information retrieval (MIR). Contextual data refers to all music-relevant information that is not included in the audio signal itself. In this article, we focus on contextual aspects of music primarily accessible through web technology. We discuss different sources of context-based data for individual music pieces and for music artists. We summarize various approaches for constructing similarity measures based on the collaborative or cultural knowledge incorporated into these data sources. In particular, we identify and review three main types of context-based similarity approaches: text-retrieval-based approaches (relying on web-texts, tags, or lyrics), co-occurrence- based approaches (relying on playlists, page counts, microblogs, or peer-to-peer-networks), and approaches based on user ratings or listening habits. This article presents an approach to browse collections of web pages about music artists by means of descriptive terms and multimedia content. To this end, a user interface called Three-Dimensional Co-Occurrence Browser (3D-COB) is introduced. 3D-COB automatically extracts and weights terms from artist-related web pages. This textual information is complemented with information on the multimedia content found on the web pages. For the user interface of 3D-COB, we elaborated a three-dimensional extension of the Sunburst visualization technique. The hierarchical data to be visualized is obtained by analyzing the web pages for combinations of co-occurring terms that are highly ranked by a term weighting function. We further investigated, in a first user study, different term weighting strategies to generate the visualization. A second user study was carried out to assess ergonomic aspects of 3D-COB, especially its usefulness for gaining a quick overview of a set of web pages and for efficiently browsing within this set. Music is ubiquitous in our everyday lives, and lyrics play an integral role when we listen to music. The complex relationships between lyrical content, its temporal evolution over the last decades, and genre-specific variations, however, are yet to be fully understood. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of English lyrics of Western, popular music over five decades and five genres, using a wide set of lyrics descriptors, including lyrical complexity, structure, emotion, and popularity. We find that pop music lyrics have become simpler and easier to comprehend over time: not only does the lexical complexity of lyrics decrease (for instance, captured by vocabulary richness or readability of lyrics), but we also observe that the structural complexity (for instance, the repetitiveness of lyrics) has decreased. In addition, we confirm previous analyses showing that the emotion described by lyrics has become more negative and that lyrics have become more personal over the last five decades. Finally, a comparison of lyrics view counts and listening counts shows that when it comes to the listeners' interest in lyrics, for instance, rock fans mostly enjoy lyrics from older songs; country fans are more interested in new songs' lyrics.
