A review of the Snake-eyed Skink Ablepharus Fitzinger, 1823 is presented. The specific character of Ablepharus involves a lack of movable eyelids, with the lower eyelid fused to the upper one, forming a transparent spectacle covering the eye. The genus Ablepharus occurs in southeastern Europe, southwest Asia, and Central Asian Republics (from the Mediterranean Sea coasts to northwest India), including 11 valid species: A. anatolicus Schmidtler, 1997, A. bivittatus (Ménétries, 1832), A. budaki Göçmen, Kumlutas & Tosunoglu, 1996, A. chernovi Darevsky, 1953, A. darvazi Eremchenko & Panfilov, 1990, A. deserti Strauch, 1868, A. grayanus (Stoliczka, 1872), A. kitaibelii Bibron & Bory St-Vincent, 1833, A. lindbergi Wettstein, 1960, A. pannonicus (Lichtenstein, 1823), and A. rueppellii (Gray, 1839). For identification of species of Ablepharus, we used additional scalation and molecular features, used anatomical survey (e.g. osteological and hemipenial characters), and species distribution models. Of the genus Ablepharus, A. bivittatus, A. chernovi, A. grayanus, and A. pannonicus occur in Iran.

IntroductionInfertility affects about 16% of North American couples, with the male factor contributing to ∼30% of cases. Reproductive hormones play an integral role in regulating the reproductive system and consequently, fertility. Oxidative stress reduces testosterone synthesis, and reduction in oxidative stress can improve hormone profiles. Ascorbic acid is a potent antioxidant that accounts for up to 65% of seminal antioxidant activity; however, its effects on reproductive hormones in humans are unknown.MethodsThe objective was to determine the association between serum ascorbic acid concentrations and male reproductive hormones. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving infertile males (n = 302) recruited from Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. Serum was analyzed for ascorbic acid, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), total testosterone (TT), prolactin and estradiol. Statistical analyses included Spearman's rank correlations, linear regressions, logistic regressions, simple slope and Johnson-Neyman procedures.ResultsAfter adjusting for covariates, ascorbic acid was inversely associated with LH (P = 0.01). Ascorbic acid was positively associated with TT only among males over the age of 41.6 years (P = 0.01).DiscussionOur findings show that ascorbic acid is associated with higher testosterone levels and improved androgenic status in infertile males, and some of the effects appear to be age dependent.

Background: Many studies reported of menstrual disturbances as possible side effects of COVID-19 vaccination. Our objective was to evaluate the association between vaccination and the occurrence of menstrual disturbances among Iranian women. Methods: We used to google form questionnaires to collect reports of menstrual disturbances from 455 women aged 15–55 years in Iran. We estimated the relative risk of menstrual disturbances according to vaccination in a self-controlled case-series design after vaccination. We examined the occurrence of such disorders after the first, second and third doses of vaccine. Results: Findings The prevalence of menstrual disturbance was more in latency and heavy bleeding than others disorder after vaccination, although ֮ %50 of women doesn't have any disturbance. We observed increased risks after vaccination also for other menstrual disturbances, in menopausal women too (>10%). Discussion: Menstrual disturbances were generally common regardless of vaccination. We found a significant increase in menstrual disturbances after vaccination, particularly for latency and heavier bleeding than usual, longer duration and for short interval between menstruations. Mechanisms underlying these findings may involve bleeding disturbances in general, as well as endocrine alterations of immune system stimulation and relation to hormonal secretion.

The kukri snakes of the genus Oligodon Fitzinger, 1826 reach the westernmost limits of their distribution in Middle and Southwest Asia (Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan), and the Palearctic portions of Pakistan. In this article, we review the systematics and distribution of the two species native to this region, Oligodon arnensis (Shaw, 1802) and Oligodon taeniolatus (Jerdon, 1853) based on an integrative approach combining morphological, molecular, and species distribution modeling (SDM) data. Phylogenetic analyses recover O. taeniolatus populations from Iran and Turkmenistan in a clade with the O. arnensis species complex, rendering the former species paraphyletic relative to O. taeniolatus sensu stricto on the Indian subcontinent. To correct this, we resurrect the name Contia transcaspica Nikolsky, 1902 from the synonymy of O. taeniolatus and assign it to populations in Middle–Southwest Asia. So far, Oligodon transcaspicus comb. et stat. nov. is known only from the Köpet–Dag Mountain Range of northeast Iran and southern Turkmenistan, but SDM mapping suggests it may have a wider range. Genetic samples of O. “arnensis” from northern Pakistan are nested in a clade sister to the recently described Oligodon churahensis Mirza, Bhardwaj & Patel, 2021, and are phylogenetically separate from O. arnensis sensu stricto in south India and Sri Lanka. Based on morphological similarity, the Afghanistan and Pakistan populations are assigned to Oligodon russelius (Daudin, 1803) and we synonymize O. churahensis with this species. Our investigation leads us to remove O. taeniolatus from the snake fauna of Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan, with the consequence that only Oligodon transcaspicus comb. et stat. nov. and O. russelius are present in these countries. Additional studies are needed to resolve the taxonomy of the O. taeniolatus and O. arnensis species complexes on the Indian subcontinent, and an updated key for both groups is provided.

IntroductionThe present study aimed to investigate the interaction of the common lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network involved in signaling pathways in different stages of prostate cancer (PCa) by using bioinformatics and experimental methods.MethodsSeventy subjects included sixty PCa patients in Local, Locally Advanced, Biochemical Relapse, Metastatic, and Benign stages, and ten healthy subjects were entered into the current study. The mRNAs with significant expression differences were first found using the GEO database. The candidate hub genes were then identified by analyzing Cytohubba and MCODE software. Cytoscape, GO Term, and KEGG software determined hub genes and critical pathways. The expression of candidate lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs was then assessed using Real-Time PCR and ELISA techniques.Results4 lncRNAs, 5 miRNAs, and 15 common target genes were detected in PCa patients compared with the healthy group. Unlike the tumor suppressors, the expression levels of common onco-lncRNAs, oncomiRNAs, and oncogenes showed a considerable increase in patients with advanced stages; Biochemical Relapse and Metastatic, in comparison to the primary stages; Local and Locally Advanced. Additionally, their expression levels significantly increased with a higher Gleason score than a lower one.ConclusionIdentifying a common lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network associated with prostate cancer may be clinically valuable as potential predictive biomarkers. They can also serve as novel therapeutic targets for PCa patients.

To discover the predictors of teacher innovative work behavior, the authors surveyed 232 EFL teachers. Three instruments, including Urtecht Work Engagement Scale questionnaire, Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (Marsick & Watkins, 2003), and Innovative Work Behavior questionnaire were employed to examine the predictors of teachers' innovation. The results demonstrated that learning organization not only positively predicted work engagement but also it acted as a significant positive predictor of innovative work behavior. Additionally, analysis of the data provided evidence on work engagement as an antecedent of teachers' innovative work behavior. Finally, work engagement partially mediated the relationship between learning organization and innovative work behavior.

Abstract Background Vitamin D (Vit D) supplementation and Aerobic Training (AT) exert several beneficial effects such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. The literature on the effects of AT and Vit D supplementation on the oxidative stress biomarkers and gene expression of inflammatory cytokines in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is limited. The present study aimed to examine the effects of AT and Vit D supplementation on inflammation and oxidative stress signaling pathways in T2DM patients. Materials and methods In this single-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 48 men with T2DM (aged 35–50 years with Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25–30 kg/m2) were randomly allocated into four groups: AT+Vit D (n = 10); AT + placebo (AT; n = 10); Vit D (n = 10), and Control + placebo (C; n = 10). The eight-week AT program was executed for 20–40 min/day, at 60–75% of heart rate maximum (HRmax), for 3 days/wks. The Vit D group received 50,000 IU of Vit D supplement capsules per week for 8 weeks. Abstract Background Recent advances in the synthesis of bioactive nanoparticles resulted in the discovery and introduction of new bioactive nanoparticles to the pharmaceutical industry. In this regard, this research is aimed to synthesize the zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using Hyssopus officinalis L. extract and to evaluate the safety of nanoparticles using Balb/C mice. Methods Forty male mice were divided into four groups and received 0, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg of ZnO-NPs for thirty days. At the end of the experiment, blood sugar, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (A.S.T.), and alanine aminotransferase (A.L.T.) were determined. Abstract Background Lifestyle interventions are the first-line treatment for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), highly prevalent in the community. This study aimed to examine the 8-week separate and combined effects of aerobic training (AT) and pomegranate juice intake (PJI) on insulin resistance and serum levels of liver enzymes, liver enzymes, and insulin resistance in men with T2DM. Methods This study evaluated the alterations of anthropometric indices, insulin resistance, and liver enzymes in 40 middle-aged men (40–50) with T2DM. Participants were randomly assigned into four groups: AT+PJI (n = 10); AT (n = 10); PJI (n = 10), and control (C) (n = 10). The AT program consisted of 60–75% of maximum heart rate (HRmax), 40–60 min/day, and 3 days/wk. Participants in the PJI group consumed 240 ml of pomegranate juice (sugar or additive-free) daily for 8 weeks. Results AT+PJI, PJI, and AT groups decreased anthropometric indices, HOMA-IR, and liver enzymes after 8 weeks. In contrast, the C group significantly increased the mentioned variables after the intervention. The result showed that AT+PJI significantly lowered liver enzymes, anthropometric indices, and HOMA-IR than AT or PJI alone. Also, the results of this study showed no significant difference between AT and PJI groups. However, in these groups, significant improvements in these variables were observed compared to the control group. Conclusion Due to the effect of combined AT+PJI in improving T2DM risk factors, it could be recommended for T2DM patients to prevent increased liver enzymes and insulin resistance.

Background Nano selenium (Nano Sel) has many therapeutic properties including antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory actions. Objective Impacts of Nano Sel administration against cardiac fibrosis and heart and aorta tissue oxidative damage observed in hypothyroid rats were explored. Methods The animals were randomly grouped and treated as: 1) Control; 2) Propylthiouracil (PTU) in which PTU was added to the drinking water (0.05%) to induce hypothyroidism; 3–5) PTU-Nano Sel 50, PTU-Nano Sel 100, and PTU-Nano Sel 150 groups, which received daily PTU plus 50,100 or 150 µg/kg of Nano Sel for 6 weeks intraperitoneally. The heart and aorta tissues were removed under deep anesthesia and then biochemical parameters including malondialdehyde (MDA), total thiol groups, catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as cardiac fibrosis were assessed. Results Hypothyroidism induced by PTU was remarkably associated with myocardial hypertrophy and perivascular fibrosis in Masson’s trichrome staining. Moreover, hypothyroidism increased MDA level, while it subtracted total thiol group content and activity of SOD and CAT. Treatment with Nano Sel recovered hypothyroidism-induced cardiac fibrosis in the histological assessment. Nano Sel also promoted CAT and SOD activity and thiol content, whereas alleviated MDA levels in the heart and aorta tissues. Conclusion Results propose that administration of Nano Sel exerts a protective role in the cardio vascular system via preventing cardiac fibrosis and inhibiting oxidative stress.

A plasmonic nanosensor is proposed and investigated its sensitivity using the optical properties of plasmonic nanoparticles. To this end, we first consider the nanosensor consisting of bowtie nanoparticles. Then, the nanosensor performance is examined under different factors such as the refractive index of the background environment, the height, and length of the nanoparticles. The proposed bowtie nanoparticles, in this work, are made of gold. The boundary element method is used to simulate the nanosensor. The extinction cross-section is computed in terms of wavelength and the effect of various factors on the resonance wavelength of localized surface plasmon is investigated. It is shown that the nanosensor investigated in this research has a high sensitivity to the changes in the refractive index of the studied sample. The sensitivity of the nanosensor is obtained as 650 nm/RIIU. In addition, the required spectral range can be arbitrarily adjusted by the type of nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the significant issues in treating bacterial infections is the increasing prevalence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains of Acinetobacter baumannii. In the face of limited or no viable treatment options for extensively drug-resistant (XDR) bacteria, there is a renewed interest in utilizing bacteriophages as a treatment option. Three Acinetobacter phages (vB_AbaS_Ftm, vB_AbaS_Eva, and vB_AbaS_Gln) were identified from hospital sewage and analyzed for their morphology, host ranges, and their genome sequences were determined and annotated. These phages and vB_AbaS_SA1 were combined to form a phage cocktail. The antibacterial effects of this cocktail and its combinations with selected antimicrobial agents were evaluated against the XDR A. baumannii strains. The phages exhibited siphovirus morphology. Out of a total of 30 XDR A. baumannii isolates, 33% were sensitive to vB_AbaS_Ftm, 30% to vB_AbaS_Gln, and 16.66% to vB_AbaS_Eva. When these phages were combined with antibiotics, they demonstrated a synergistic effect. The genome sizes of vB_AbaS_Ftm, vB_AbaS_Eva, and vB_AbaS_Gln were 48487, 50174, and 50043 base pairs (bp), respectively, and showed high similarity. Phage cocktail, when combined with antibiotics, showed synergistic effects on extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains of A. baumannii. However, the need for further study to fully understand the mechanisms of action and potential limitations of using these phages is highlighted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
