The maximal secretion pressure in both the submaxillary and parotid gland varies directly with the rate of flow. At high rates (1 ml/min) of flow the pressure in the submaxillary gland is significantly higher than that in the parotid. At these flow rates the secretion pressure in both glands is higher than the capillary blood pressure.

Thirteen infants and children with adenovirus type 7 infection proved by virus isolation are described. High fever, cough and dyspnea were the most frequent findings; in infants under 1 year of age wheezing was common. Four patients required artificial ventilation. Lobar collapse, consolidation and hyperinflation were frequent radiologic findings. None of the symptoms responded to antibiotic therapy or bronchodilator drugs. Three patients died (mortality rate of 23%). Pathologic findings were compatible with adenovirus type 7 pneumonia, and were characterized by a necrotizing bronchitis and bronchiolitis, patchy alveolar fibrinopurulent exudate and hyaline membrane formation. Some intra-alveolar epithelial cells showed strikingly abnormal nuclei and rare typical halo-outlined intranuclear inclusions were seen. Only one of eight survivors had evidence of significant chronic chest disease.

Parotid secretion of rubidium has been studied and compared with secretion of potassium. Potassium is rapidly transferred by the duct cells of the parotid gland from the plasma to the saliva. The concentration in a series of two-drop saliva samples reaches a peak in about the sixth sample after which the concentration is maintained characteristically high. In contradistinction, other ions display a rapid decrease in concentration. Rb86 shows a curve similar to that of potassium. Potassium and rubidium respond identically to changes in saliva flow rate. At flow rates of 0.2 or 0.3 ml/min. the concentration of both ions in the saliva is approximately twice that of the plasma. The S/P ratio progressively increases with decreasing flow rates reaching a maximum of about 8 at a saliva flow of 0.01 ml/min. Elevation of the plasma concentration of both ions evokes an increased saliva concentration. It is concluded that rubidium is transferred from plasma to saliva by the duct cells of the parotid gland and is transported by the same mechanism responsible for potassium secretion.

Laboratory and field trials were employed to examine the feasibility of using biological tags as moult indicators. Twenty-four animals were tagged with epidermal implants and held in aquaria for 2 years and 8 months before the tags were removed. Five tags failed to form useful cysts and one tag was damaged during processing. The remaining 18 lobsters moulted between three and six times, with this moulting record being accurately verified by 15 of the biological tags and incorrectly interpreted (by one moult) in one case. Two tags produced inconclusive results. Biological tags were tested in the field in the Fremantle area, with 132 animals being recaptured out of 1336 tagged. Eleven tags proved impossible to read, eight failed to form cysts, and the balance recorded up to six moults during the release period. Animals in the size range 60–80 mm carapace length (CL) recorded two moults per year, one in February–April and a second before the mid-November start to the fishing season. Females grew significantly less per moult than did males in the same size category (60–85 mm CL), and both sexes showed significantly smaller increments for animals ≥85 mm CL at release.

Two male cousins developed symptoms and signs of Addison's disease at age 3 weeks. The family history indicates that their disorder is inherited as an X-linked recessive.

A Kratos MS-25RFA medium resolution mass spectrometer and a Concept IS high resolution mass spectrometer were used to analyse a range of highly substituted aromatic alcohols for kinetic studies.

S on the combustion termination characteristics conducted in several laboratories" have demonstrated that extinguishment can be achieved by rapid depressurization of the combustion chamber. These studies have shown that the susceptibility of a particular solid-propellant formulation to complete extinguishment can be characterized by the rate of decay of combustion chamber pressure. Typically, dPc/dt can be as high as 150,000 to 200,000 psi/sec, depending on the particular propellant formulation and the initial combustion pressure. To determine dPc/dt accurately requires careful consideration of the dynamic response characteristics of the pressure measuring instrumentation. The calculations presented in the following paragraphs were made to define the dynamic response characteristics required for such instrumentation. Characterization of the combustion termination characteristics of solid propellants is usually determined by the sudden increase in exhaust nozzle area. From an analysis of the transient ballistics of such a step change in nozzle area, the initial rate of pressure decay is given by

The photoelectron spectra of some 2- and 9-substituted (1x,4x,4aβ,5β,8β,8aβ)-1,2,3,4,4a,5,8,8a-octahydro-1,4:5,8-dimethanonaphthalenes, (1)-(6), and (12), and their perhydro analogues, (1')-(6'), and (12'), were obtained in order to assess the magnitude and nature of orbital interactions in these molecules. The πcc Ip of the ketone (12) was found to be 0.1 eV higher than that of the hydrocarbon (1) and is thought to be due to the presence of orbital interactions through bonds in the former molecule. Through-space and through-bond interactions in the ketone (6) are responsible for increasing the πcc Ip by 0.33 eV with respect to that of (1) whereas through-space interactions are solely responsible for the lowering of the πcc Ip of the syn-ether (5) 0.36 eV with respect to the anti isomer (3). Strong intramolecular OH…π bonding in the alcohol (4) results is an increase in πcc by 0.33 eV and a decrease in the no Ip by 0.42 eV both with respect to the corresponding ionizations in the anti-alcohol (2).

Four gas fields (Glentulloch, Westgrove, Rolleston and Arcturus) were discovered by AAR Limited in the Denison Trough in the early 1960's. Permian gas reservoirs were encountered in Late Triassic wrench anticlines. The fields were not developed because of low gas prices and exploration technology problems at that time. Exploration activities ceased in 1970.Increased gas prices, the opportunity of an expanded gas market, and improved seismic technology provided the incentive to recommence regional seismic surveying of the basin in 1979. More than 2600 km of multi-fold seismic data have been recorded by the AAR Limited/Oil Company of Australia N.L. Joint Venture. The enhanced seismic resolution resulted in a revision of the structural and stratigraphic interpretation of the basin. Exploration drilling in 1981 was directed initially at deep Early Permian structures; however, reservoir quality of the Lower Permian sequence was poor and gas flow rates minimal.Exploration was therefore redirected towards the definition of prospects which were structurally and stratigraphically similar to the known fields. Five exploration wells have been drilled since November 1981, resulting in the discovery of a further three gas fields — Merivale, Yellowbank and Punchbowl Gully. Appraisal wells were drilled on the Glentulloch, Westgrove, Merivale and Yellowbank Fields, and were cased for future production.It is estimated that nine billion cubic metres (x 109m3) of conventional gas reserves are present within the basin. In addition, tight reservoirs contain large volumes of gas which may be producible by hydraulic fracturing. The basin is being actively explored to realize its full potential and to supply industrial and domestic markets in central and southeastern Queensland.

Radioisotopes of K, Na, I, Ca and P were used. In the first series, saliva flow was stopped by closing the outlet valve. The isotope was then injected into the ipsilateral artery. Saliva was collected serially in two-drop samples. In the second series, a constant blood level of isotope was maintained. Saliva flow was stopped for 90 seconds. The first series shows that each isotope has a specific area for maximum transfer. This is most distally in the duct for calcium and least distally for iodine with the others falling between these two extremes. Because these transfers occur in the first few drops collected, and because autoradiographs have shown iodine to be most concentrated in the duct it is concluded that all of the ions studied in this series are transferred to the saliva by the duct cells. The second series shows that during flow stoppage, sodium and chloride concentration in the ducts usually decreases while potassium, calcium, iodine and phosphorus concentration increases. The fact that all of these changes are limited to the duct further supports the conclusion that ionic transfer takes place exclusively in the ducts. A recirculation of sodium and chloride between the plasma and saliva is postulated.
