We use our survey of finance professors from universities across the USA to investigate whether men and women react differently to prior gains and losses. We find that after incurring a loss, a large fraction of men continue to invest in stocks, but a majority of women tend to avoid investing in stocks. Even though prior losses increase the expectation of unfavorable market conditions, we find that women are more likely than men to expect unfavorable market conditions irrespective of whether they have made a gain or a loss in their prior stock market investments. Clustering, especially in vehicular safety applications is an important part of intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, an adaptive mobility and range based clustering (AMRBC) based MAC protocol is proposed. The protocol aims to maintain a stable clustering and hence a communication range to maintain high stability of network. Secondly, AMRBC limits the cluster size to a level at which all the cluster members can exchange their beacons within control channel interval. AMRBC prioritizes safety messages over infotainment messages by granting immediate channel access to safety messages over infotainment messages thereby significantly reducing safety message delay. Moreover, the proposed MAC protocol fairly distributes wireless channels among vehicles and ensures that all the vehicles exchange their beacons within finite interval of time. Analytical modelling along with simulation based performance analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol in terms of average cluster head time, safety message delay, throughput, reliability and packet delivery ratio. Sterile lung injury is an important clinical problem that complicates the course of severely ill patients. Interruption of blood flow, namely ischemia-reperfusion (IR), initiates a sterile inflammatory response in the lung that is believed to be maladaptive. The rationale for this study was to elucidate the molecular basis for lung IR inflammation and whether it is maladaptive or beneficial. Using a mouse model of lung IR, we demonstrate that sequential blocking of inflammasomes [specifically, NOD-, LRR-, and pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3)], inflammatory caspases, and interleukin (IL)-1β, all resulted in an attenuated inflammatory response. IL-1β production appeared to predominantly originate in conjunction with alveolar type 2 epithelial cells. Lung IR injury recruited unactivated or dormant neutrophils producing less reactive oxygen species thereby challenging the notion that recruited neutrophils are terminally activated. However, lung IR inflammation was able to limit or reduce the bacterial burden from subsequent experimentally induced pneumonia. Notably, inflammasome-deficient mice were unable to alter this bacterial burden following IR. Thus, we conclude that the NLRP3 inflammasome, through IL-1β production, regulates lung IR inflammation, which includes recruitment of dormant neutrophils. The sterile IR inflammatory response appears to serve an important function in inducing resistance to subsequent bacterial pneumonia and may constitute a critical part of early host responses to infection in trauma. Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is an effective and versatile tool for the examination of complex structural systems with rate dependent behaviors. To meet the objectives of such a test, appropriate consideration must be given to the partitioning of the system into physical and computational portions (i.e., the configuration of the RTHS). Predictive stability and performance indicators (PSI and PPI) were initially established for use with only single degree-of-freedom systems. These indicators allow researchers to plan a RTHS, to quantitatively examine the impact of partitioning choices on stability and performance, and to assess the sensitivity of an RTHS configuration to de-synchronization at the interface. In this study, PSI is extended to any linear multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) system. The PSI is obtained analytically and it is independent of the transfer system and controller dynamics, providing a relatively easy and extremely useful method to examine many partitioning choices. A novel matrix method is adopted to convert a delay differential equation to a generalized eigenvalue problem using a set of vectorization mappings, and then to analytically solve the delay differential equations in a computationally efficient way. Through two illustrative examples, the PSI is demonstrated and validated. Validation of the MDOF PSI also includes comparisons to a MDOF dynamic model that includes realistic models of the hydraulic actuators and the control-structure interaction effects. Rapid broadcast of safety message (sm) is critical for real-time applications in cognitive radio vehicular ad hoc networks (CR-VANETs). The arrival of primary users (PU) and the relative unpredictability of traffic emerge as network bottleneck constraints, resulting in unreliable broadcast services. The requirement is for a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol that allows for fair contention, is adaptive, and includes a makeup strategy for rebroadcasting failed transmissions. There are intricate tradeoff optimisation relationships in which a value for the contention window that is inadequate will not result in optimal network performance. In this paper, we develop a dynamic contention window backoff mechanism using Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions that enhances network performance by modifying the backoff time according to traffic density. Then we amalgamate this algorithm with a cooperative makeup strategy to design a novel a daptive and c ooperative MAC protocol that is operable in a dynamic CR - V ANET paradigm (ACCRV-MAC). A Markov chain decision model characterises the protocol, and Network Simulator -2 analyses various performance parameters. The study reveals that ACCRV-MAC improves throughput by 38.3% and reduces network latency by 49% compared to existing MAC protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
