- Abstract
In the present study 13C-chemical shift additivity rules are developed for polyhydroxyxanthones with antituberculotic activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. QSAR investigations are performed by correlating 13C-chemical shifts and calculated dipole moments of several 1,3-substituted polyhydroxyxanthones with their antituberculotic activity and by using the CoMFA approach as a threedimensional QSAR method.

Lin, Y. et al., [Background] Previous studies suggest that dietary protein might play a beneficial role in combating obesity and its related chronic diseases. Total, animal and plant protein intakes and their associations with anthropometry and serum biomarkers in European adolescents using one standardised methodology across European countries are not well documented., [Objectives] To evaluate total, animal and plant protein intakes in European adolescents stratified by gender and age, and to investigate their associations with cardio-metabolic indicators (anthropometry and biomarkers)., [Methods] The current analysis included 1804 randomly selected adolescents participating in the HELENA study (conducted in 2006–2007) aged 12.5-17.5 y (47% males) who completed two non-consecutive computerised 24-h dietary recalls. Associations between animal and plant protein intakes, and anthropometry and serum biomarkers were examined with General linear Model multivariate analysis., [Results] Average total protein intake exceeded the recommendations of World Health Organization and European Food Safety Authority. Mean total protein intake was 96 g/d (59% derived from animal protein). Total, animal and plant protein intakes (g/d) were significantly lower in females than in males and total and plant protein intakes were lower in younger participants (12.5-14.9 y). Protein intake was significantly lower in underweight subjects and higher in obese ones; the direction of the relationship was reversed after adjustments for body weight (g/(kg.d)). The inverse association of plant protein intakes was stronger with BMI z-score and body fat percentage (BF%) compared to animal protein intakes. Additionally, BMI and BF% were positively associated with energy percentage of animal protein., [Conclusions] This sample of European adolescents appeared to have adequate total protein intake. Our findings suggest that plant protein intakes may play a role in preventing obesity among European adolescents. Further longitudinal studies are needed to investigate the potential beneficial effects observed in this study in the prevention of obesity and related chronic diseases., The HELENA-study took place with the financial support of the European Community Sixth RTD Framework Programme. This work was also partially supported by the European Union in the framework of the Public Health Programme, the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research (FAS), the Spanish Ministry of Education, and the Spanish Ministry of Health, Maternal, Child Health and Development Network and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation AGL2007-29784-E.

270. Environmentally dependent sensitive periods for avian vocal learning

- Abstract
Experience during brief periods of development can exert a profound influence on later life1. Among songbirds, experimental evidence for enhanced vocal learning during a relatively brief period early in life is well documented2,3. The timing of vocal learning with respect to dispersal is fundamental to our understanding of many population processes, yet the significance of the sensitive period remains unclear. We report here that in our study of the marsh wren (Cistothorus palustris), a North American songbird, we found that the sensitive period for song learning is not rigidly programmed with respect to dispersal and/or migration; two environmental factors, the photoperiod and the amount of adult song heard during the hatching year, influence the nature of the sensitive period during the hatching year, the ability to learn further the next spring, and the relative dates at which young males develop their adult songs.

- Abstract
Background & Aims Wheat amylase-trypsin inhibitors (ATIs) are nutritional activators of innate immunity, via activation of the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on myeloid cells. We aimed to characterize the biologic activity of ATIs in various foods and their effect on intestinal inflammation. Methods We selected 38 different gluten-containing and gluten-free products, either unprocessed (such as wheat, rye, barley, quinoa, amaranth, soya, lentils, and rice) or processed (such as pizza, pasta, bread, and biscuits). ATIs were extracted and their biological activities determined in TLR4-responsive mouse and human cell lines. Effects of oral ATIs on intestinal inflammation were determined in healthy C57BL/6 mice on a gluten-free or ATI-free diet and in mice given low-level polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid or dextran sodium sulfate to induce colitis. Parameters of innate and adaptive immune activation were determined in duodenum, ileum, colon, and mesenteric lymph nodes. Results Modern gluten-containing staples had levels of TLR4-activating ATIs that were as much as 100-fold higher than in most gluten-free foods. Processed or baked foods retained ATI bioactivity. Most older wheat variants (such as Emmer or Einkorn) had lower bioactivity than modern (hexaploid) wheat. ATI species CM3 and 0.19 were the most prevalent activators of TLR4 in modern wheat and were highly resistant to intestinal proteolysis. Their ingestion induced modest intestinal myeloid cell infiltration and activation, and release of inflammatory mediators—mostly in the colon, then in the ileum, and then in the duodenum. Dendritic cells became prominently activated in mesenteric lymph nodes. Concentrations of ATIs found in a normal daily gluten-containing diet increased low-level intestinal inflammation. Conclusions Gluten-containing cereals have by far the highest concentrations of ATIs that activate TLR4. Orally ingested ATIs are largely resistant to proteases and heat, and increase intestinal inflammation by activating gut and mesenteric lymph node myeloid cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study explores the lived experience of stroke survivors returning to work after rehabilitation. Common themes of their lived experience point to the need to address return to work early in the rehab process and foster a sense of self-efficacy about returning to work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Introduction:The major task of a B-cell receptor is the binding and internalization of its antigenic target, and its processing for antigen presentation to T-cells. Chronic antigenic stimulation has been discussed to play a role in the pathogenesis of malignant B-cell lymphomas. We therefore systematically searched for the antigenic targets of BCRs from various B-cell neoplasms.

286. Advanced Extramedullary Hematopoiesis In a Transplanted Liver Graft As Initial Presentation Of Primary Myelofibrosis

- Abstract
Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is one of the BCR-ABL-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. The hallmarks of PMF include increased bone marrow (BM) fibrosis, megakaryocytic hyperplasia with hyperchromatic nuclei and abnormal lobation, leukoerythroblastosis, cytopenias, extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH), and constitutional symptoms that can be debilitating. PMF is associated with the constitutive mobilization of CD34+ cells into the peripheral blood which characteristically occurs in the more clinically advanced phases of the disease. This dysregulation of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) trafficking likely ultimately leads to the seeding of extramedullary sites with primitive hematopoietic capacity, resulting in EMH within the spleen and liver as well as a variety of other organs. We present a first report of a unique presentation of PMF in a liver transplant-recipient patient as EMH in the transplanted liver graft.

- Abstract
The article focuses on the issue of mass house evictions in Sheikh Jarrah, Jerusalem. The Israeli court has considered the land to which the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood as disputed even if the houses were built through the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) and the Jordanian government. The al-Ghawe and Hanun families occupying Sheikh Jarrah reportedly worries of unjust and cruel evictions like what the al-Kurd family experienced in November 2008 despite wide public support.

- Abstract
TO THE EDITOR:— The clinical note in The Journal, Sept. 26, 1959, page 415, is a case report entitled "Hypersensitivity to Immune Serum Globulin." The publication of this seems unfortunate to me, since both diagnosis and treatment are open to question. The inaccuracies which it contains could lead to disaster in circumstances of a similar nature. The concept of spontaneous hypersensitivity to human immune serum globulin is hardly borne out by any of the evidence or comments printed. The fact that both parents had a strong allergic history scarcely gives any additional credibility to this diagnosis, in a 15-week-old child who has yet to manifest one symptom of an allergic nature despite the fact that it has met and apparently overcome successfully innumerable antigens.Even the comments of the consultant which are included contain rather misleading statements; e. g., speaking of the possibility of allergy, "The mechanism is of some

On behalf of the HELENA Study Group., [Background and aims]: The ideal cardiovascular health (iCVH) construct consists of 4 health behaviors (smoking status, body mass index, physical activity and diet) and 3 health factors (total cholesterol, blood pressure and fasting glucose). A greater number of iCVH components in adolescence are related to better cardiovascular health, but little is known about the correlates of iCVH in adolescents. Thus, the aim of the study was to examine correlates of iCVH in European adolescents., [Methods and results]: The study comprised 637 European adolescents with complete iCVH data. Participants were part of the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence (HELENA) study, a cross-sectional, multicenter study conducted in 9 different European countries. Correlates investigated were sex and age, family affluence scale, maternal education, geographic location, sleep time, television viewing, duration of pregnancy, birth weight and breastfeeding. Younger adolescents, those whose mothers had medium/high education or those who watched television less than 2 h per day had a greater number of iCVH components compared to those who were older, had a mother with low education or watched television 2 h or more daily (P ≤ 0.01)., [Conclusion]: Since in our study older adolescents had worse iCVH than younger adolescents, early promotion of cardiovascular health may be important. Future studies may also investigate the usefulness of limiting television viewing to promote iCVH. Finally, since adolescents of mothers with low education had poorer iCVH, it may be of special interest to tailor public health promotion to adolescents from families with low socioeconomic status., The HELENA project was supported by the European Community Sixth RTD Framework Programme (contract FOOD-CT-2005-007034). The data for this study was gathered under the aegis of the HELENA project, and further analysis was additionally supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (grants RYC-2010-05957 and RYC-2011-09011), the Spanish Ministry of Health: Maternal, Child Health and Development Network (grant RD16/0022), the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (MICINN-FEDER) and by the University of Granada, Plan Propio de Investigación 2016, Excellence actions: Units of Excellence; Unit of Excellence on Exercise and Health (UCEES). Hanna Henriksson was supported by grants from the Swedish Society of Medicine and the County Council of Östergötland, Sweden. On behalf of the HELENA study group., [Background and aims] Inflammation may influence the cardio-metabolic profile which relates with the risk of chronic diseases. This study aimed to assess the inflammatory status by metabolic health (MH)/body mass index (BMI) category and to assess how inflammatory markers can predict the cardio-metabolic profile in European adolescents, considering BMI. [Methods and results] A total of 659 adolescents (295 boys) from a cross-sectional European study were included. Adolescents were classified by metabolic health based on age- and sex-specific cut-off points for glucose, blood pressure, triglycerides, high density cholesterol and BMI. C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL-6), complement factors (C3, C4) and cell adhesion molecules were assessed. [Results] Metabolically abnormal (MA) adolescents had higher values of C3 (p < 0.001) and C4 (p = 0.032) compared to those metabolically healthy (MHy). C3 concentrations significantly increased with the deterioration of the metabolic health and BMI (p < 0.001). Adolescents with higher values of CRP had higher probability of being in the overweight/obese-MH group than those allocated in other categories. Finally, high C3 and C4 concentrations increased the probability of having an unfavorable metabolic/BMI status. [Conclusions] Metabolic/BMI status and inflammatory biomarkers are associated, being the CRP, C3 and C4 the most related inflammatory markers with this condition. C3 and C4 were associated with the cardio-metabolic health consistently., The HELENA Study was supported by the European Community Sixth RTD Framework Programme (Contract FOOD-CT-2005-007034) and the Stockholm County Council. This analysis was also supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (JCI-2010-07055) and the gs4:European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). International audience; Objective: To assess the relationships among physical activity, measured objectively, and attention capacity in European adolescents.Study design: The study included 273 adolescents, aged 12.5-17.5 years, who participated in the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence Study. Participants wore a uniaxial accelerometer for 7 days to measure physical activity. The d2 Test of Attention was administered to assess attention capacity. Multivariate analyses were used to study the association of attention capacity with each measure of physical activity. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine thresholds that best discriminate between low and good attention capacity. Results: After controlling for potential confounding variables (age, sex, body mass index, parental educational level, fat mass, aerobic fitness, and center), adolescents' attention capacity test performances were significantly and positively associated with longer time spent in moderate or moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in free-living conditions (P < .05). Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses revealed that the physical activity thresholds that best discriminated between low/good attention capacities were ≥41 min·day−1 for moderate, ≥12 min·day−1 for vigorous, and ≥58 min·day−1 for MVPA.Conclusion:These findings suggest that promoting MVPA may be have a beneficial effect on attention capacity, an important component of cognition, in adolescents.
