Reliably computing the free energy in a gauge theory like QCD is a challenging and resource-demanding endeavor. As an alternative, we explore here the possibility to obtain the associated thermodynamic anomaly by exploiting its relation to the Tan contact. Optimally, this would reduce the determination of the free energy to a high-precision calculation of two-point correlators. Digital transformation is a process of digitizing the working and living environment in which people are at the center of digitization. In this paper, we present a personas-based guideline for system developers on how the humanization of digital transformation integrates into the design process. The proposed guideline uses the positive personas from the beginning as a basis for the transformation of the working environment into the digital form. To date at least 10 highly flattened planes of dwarf galaxies are claimed to have been discovered in the Local Universe. The origin of these planes of galaxies remains unknown. One suggestion is that they are related to the large-scale structure of the cosmic web. A recent study found that the normal of a number of these dwarf galaxy planes are very closely aligned with the eigenvector of the shear tensor corresponding to the direction of greatest collapse obtained by reconstructing the full velocity field in the linear regime. Here we extend that work by both considering an additional 5 planes beyond the 5 examined previously and by examining the alignment with respect to the quasi-linear field, a more sophisticated reconstruction, which is a better approximation on smaller (quasi-linear) scales. Our analysis recovers the previous result while not finding a significantly tight alignment with the additional 5 planes. However, the additional 5 planes normals also do not appear to be randomly oriented. We conclude that this could either be due to the normals of the new planes being poorly defined and described; the quasi-linear field at those locations being poorly constrained; or different formation mechanisms for the orientation of planes of dwarf galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The large density of gluons, which is present shortly after a nuclear collision at very high energies, can lead to the formation of a condensate. We identify a gauge-invariant order parameter for condensation based on elementary non-perturbative excitations of the plasma, which are described by spatial Wilson loops. Using real-time lattice simulations, we demonstrate that a self-similar transport process towards low momenta builds up a macroscopic zero mode. We discuss the phase structure of QCD for $N_f=2$ and $N_f=2+1$ dynamical quark flavours at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential. It emerges dynamically from the underlying fundamental interactions between quarks and gluons in our work. To this end, starting from the perturbative high-energy regime, we systematically integrate-out quantum fluctuations towards low energies by using the functional renormalisation group. By dynamically hadronising the dominant interaction channels responsible for the formation of light mesons and quark condensates, we are able to extract the phase diagram for $\mu_B/T \lesssim 6$. We find a critical endpoint at $(T_\text{CEP},{\mu_B}_{\text{CEP}})=(107, 635)\,\text{MeV}$. The curvature of the phase boundary at small chemical potential is $\kappa=0.0142(2)$, computed from the renormalised light chiral condensate $\Delta_{l,R}$. Furthermore, we find indications for an inhomogeneous regime in the vicinity and above the chiral transition for $\mu_B\gtrsim 417$ MeV. Where applicable, our results are in very good agreement with the most recent lattice results. We also compare to results from other functional methods and phenomenological freeze-out data. This indicates that a consistent picture of the phase structure at finite baryon chemical potential is beginning to emerge. One of the biggest challenges for deep learning algorithms in medical image analysis is the indiscriminate mixing of image properties, e.g. artifacts and anatomy. These entangled image properties lead to a semantically redundant feature encoding for the relevant task and thus lead to poor generalization of deep learning algorithms. In this paper we propose a novel representation disentanglement method to extract semantically meaningful and generalizable features for different tasks within a multi-task learning framework. Deep neural networks are utilized to ensure that the encoded features are maximally informative with respect to relevant tasks, while an adversarial regularization encourages these features to be disentangled and minimally informative about irrelevant tasks. We aim to use the disentangled representations to generalize the applicability of deep neural networks. We demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method on synthetic data as well as fetal ultrasound images. Our experiments illustrate that our method is capable of learning disentangled internal representations. It outperforms baseline methods in multiple tasks, especially on images with new properties, e.g. previously unseen artifacts in fetal ultrasound.

In some important computer vision domains, such as medical or hyperspectral imaging, we care about the classification of tiny objects in large images. However, most Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for image classification were developed using biased datasets that contain large objects, in mostly central image positions. To assess whether classical CNN architectures work well for tiny object classification we build a comprehensive testbed containing two datasets: one derived from MNIST digits and one from histopathology images. This testbed allows controlled experiments to stress-test CNN architectures with a broad spectrum of signal-to-noise ratios. Our observations indicate that: (1) There exists a limit to signal-to-noise below which CNNs fail to generalize and that this limit is affected by dataset size - more data leading to better performances; however, the amount of training data required for the model to generalize scales rapidly with the inverse of the object-to-image ratio (2) in general, higher capacity models exhibit better generalization; (3) when knowing the approximate object sizes, adapting receptive field is beneficial; and (4) for very small signal-to-noise ratio the choice of global pooling operation affects optimization, whereas for relatively large signal-to-noise values, all tested global pooling operations exhibit similar performance.

The Q-method has been utilized over time in various areas, including information systems. In this study, we used a systematic mapping to illustrate how the Q-method was applied within Information Systems (IS) community and proposing towards the integration of Q-method into the Design Sciences Research (DSR) process as a tool for future research DSR-based IS studies. In this mapping study, we collected peer-reviewed journals from Basket-of-Eight journals and the digital library of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). Then we grouped the publications according to the process of DSR, and different variables for preparing Q-method from IS publications. We present version 3.0 of the Mathematica package DoFun for the derivation of functional equations. We present a detailed characterization of planes of satellites in the Milky Way (MW) and M31 systems. To this end we introduce an extension to the '4-galaxy-normal density plot' method \citep{Pawlowski13}, by which plot over-densities signal the normal direction to predominant planes of satellites within a given sample. For a given over-density, the extension provides a \textit{collection} of planes, each including a different number of objects $N_{\rm sat}$. We apply this method to the position data of confirmed MW and M31 satellites and quantify the quality of planes through the outputs of a Tensor of Inertia plane-fitting technique. Plane quality is quantified in terms of population ($N_{\rm sat}$) and flattening (the short-to-long axis ratio $c/a$ or the rms thickness normal to the plane). Therefore, planes with the same population or flattening can be compared with each other allowing us to single-out best-quality planes. For the first time, we study the second-most predominant planar configuration of satellites in M31, singling out a plane with 18 satellite members that shows a quality comparable to the Great Plane of Andromeda (GPoA, with $N_{\rm sat}=19$) despite it being more affected by distance uncertainties. This structure is viewed nearly face-on from the MW and is approximately normal to the GPoA. Overall, we find planes of satellites around the MW and M31 with higher qualities than those previously reported with a given $N_{\rm sat}$. We exploit a few- to many-body approach to study strongly interacting dipolar bosons in the quasi-one-dimensional system. The dipoles attract each other while the short range interactions are repulsive. Solving numerically the multi-atom Schr\"{o}dinger equation, we discover that such systems can exhibit not only the well known bright soliton solutions but also novel quantum droplets for a strongly coupled case. For larger systems, basing on microscopic properties of the found few-body solution, we propose a new equation for a density amplitude of atoms. It accounts for fermionization for strongly repelling bosons by incorporating the Lieb-Liniger energy in a local density approximation and approaches the standard Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) in the weakly interacting limit. Not only does such a framework provide an alternative mechanism of the droplet stability, but it also introduces means to further analyze this previously unexplored quantum phase. In the limiting strong repulsion case, yet another simple multi-atom model is proposed. Due to the complexity of the space of quantum many-body states the computation of expectation values by statistical sampling is, in general, a hard task. Neural network representations of such quantum states which can be physically implemented by neuromorphic hardware could enable efficient sampling. A scheme is proposed which leverages this capability to speed up sampling from so-called neural quantum states encoded by a restricted Boltzmann machine. Due to the complex network parameters a direct hardware implementation is not feasible. We overcome this problem by considering a phase reweighting scheme for sampling expectation values of observables. Applying our method to a set of paradigmatic entangled quantum states we find that, in general, the phase-reweighted sampling is subject to a form of sign problem, which renders the sampling computationally costly. System consisting of a number of trapped atoms evolving under the influence of external inhomogenous magnetic field undergoes spin dephasing: classically, since each atom feels different field along its trajectory, the spin rotation rates differ; as a result the average spin decays. In a quantum mechanical context this corresponds to entanglement of spin and spatial degrees of freedom and nontrivial internal spin dynamics. The spin dephasing can be prevented by tuning the interaction between the atoms. This phenomenon, called spin self-rephasing, has been observed experimentally and can increase the coherence time by a large factor. While such systems have been studied from a semiclassical point of view, a quantum mechanical description is limited, especially in the case of entangled states. In this work we provide a numerical simulation of an ab initio model and provide realistic examples of spin self-rephasing used to counteract the effect of inhomogenous magnetic field. Since the incident nuclei in heavy-ion collisions do not carry strangeness, the global net strangeness of the detected hadrons has to vanish. We show that there is an intimate relation between strangeness neutrality and baryon-strangeness correlations. In the context of heavy-ion collisions, the former is a consequence of quark number conservation of the strong interactions while the latter are sensitive probes of the character of QCD matter. We investigate the sensitivity of baryon-strangeness correlations on the freeze-out conditions of heavy-ion collisions by studying their dependence on temperature, baryon- and strangeness chemical potential. The impact of strangeness neutrality on the QCD equation of state at finite chemical potentials will also be discussed. We propose a scenario with string theory in the deep ultraviolet, an intermediate asymptotically safe scaling regime for gravity and matter, and the Standard Model in the infrared. This could provide a new perspective to tackle challenges of the two models: For instance, the gravitational Renormalization Group flow could connect a negative microscopic to a positive macroscopic cosmological constant, potentially rendering string theory on an anti-de Sitter background observationally viable. Further, the unitarity of a string-theoretic ultraviolet completion could be inherited by an asymptotically safe fixed point, despite the presence of higher-order interactions. We discuss necessary conditions on the scale of asymptotic safety and the string scale for our scenario to be viable. The aim of presented research is to design a nanodevice based on a gate-defined quantum dot within a MoS$_2$ monolayer in which we confine a single electron. By applying control voltages to the device gates we modulate the confinement potential and force intervalley transitions. The present Rashba spin-orbit coupling additionally allows for spin operations. Moreover, both effects enable the spin-valley SWAP. The device structure is modeled realistically, taking into account feasible dot-forming potential and electric field that controls the Rasha coupling. Therefore, by performing reliable numerical simulations, we show how by electrically controlling the state of the electron in the device, we can obtain single- and two-qubit (thus universal) gates in a spin-valley two-qubit system. Through simulations we investigate possibility of implementation of two qubits \textit{locally}, based on single electron, with an intriguing feature that two-qubit gates are easier to realize than single ones., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures

Dwarf galaxy satellite systems are essential probes to test models of structure formation, making it necessary to establish a census of dwarf galaxies outside of our own Local Group. We present deep FORS2 VI band images from the ESO Very Large Telescope for 15 dwarf galaxy candidates in the Centaurus group of galaxies. We confirm nine dwarfs to be members of CenA by measuring their distances using a Bayesian approach to determine the tip of the red giant branch luminosity. We have also fitted theoretical isochrones to measure their mean metallicities. The properties of the new dwarfs are similar to those in the Local Group in terms of their sizes, luminosities, and mean metallicities. Within our photometric precision there is no evidence of a metallicity spread, but we do observe possible extended star formation in several galaxies, as evidenced by a population of asymptotic giant branch stars brighter than the red giant branch tip. The new dwarfs do not show any signs of tidal disruption. Together with the recently reported dwarf galaxies by the complementary PISCeS survey, we study the luminosity function and 3D structure of the group. By comparing the observed luminosity function to the high-resolution cosmological simulation IllustrisTNG, we find agreement within a 90% confidence interval. However, CenA seems to be missing its brightest satellites and has an overabundance of the faintest dwarfs in comparison to its simulated analogs. In terms of the overall 3D distribution of the observed satellites, we find that the whole structure is flattened along the line-of-sight, with an root-mean-square (rms) height of 130 kpc and a rms semi major axis length of 330 kpc. Software complexity has increased over the years. One common way to tackle this complexity during development is to encapsulate features into a shared library. This allows developers to reuse already implemented features instead of reimplementing them over and over again. However, not all features provided by a shared library are actually used by an application. As a result, an application using shared libraries loads unused code into memory, which an attacker can use to perform code-reuse and similar types of attacks. The same holds for applications written in a scripting language such as PHP or Ruby: The interpreter typically offers much more functionality than is actually required by the application and hence provides a larger overall attack surface. In this paper, we tackle this problem and propose a first step towards automated application-specific software stacks. We present a compiler extension capable of removing unneeded code from shared libraries and---with the help of domain knowledge---also capable of removing unused functionalities from an interpreter's code base during the compilation process. Our evaluation against a diverse set of real-world applications, among others Nginx, Lighttpd, and the PHP interpreter, removes on average 71.3% of the code in musl-libc, a popular libc implementation. The evaluation on web applications show that a tailored PHP interpreter can mitigate entire vulnerability classes, as is the case for OpenConf. We demonstrate the applicability of our debloating approach by creating an application-specific software stack for a Wordpress web application: we tailor the libc library to the Nginx web server and PHP interpreter, whereas the PHP interpreter is tailored to the Wordpress web application. In this real-world scenario, the code of the libc is decreased by 65.1% in total, thereby reducing the available code for code-reuse attacks.

It is well known that satellite galaxies are not isotropically distributed among their host galaxies as suggested by most interpretations of the $\Lambda$CDM model. One type of anisotropy recently detected in the SDSS (and seen when examining the distribution of satellites in the Local Group and in the Centaurus group) is a tendency to be so-called "lopsided". Namely, in pairs of galaxies (like Andromeda and the Milky Way) the satellites are more likely to inhabit the region in between the pair, rather than on opposing sides. Although recent studies found a similar set up when comparing pairs of galaxies in $\Lambda$CDM simulations indicating that such a set up is not inconsistent with $\Lambda$CDM, the origin has yet to be explained. Here we examine the origin of such lopsided setups by first identifying such distributions in pairs of galaxies in numerical cosmological simulations, and then tracking back the orbital trajectories of satellites (which at $z=0$ display the effect). We report two main results: first, the lopsided distribution was stronger in the past and weakens towards $z=0$. Second, the weakening of the signal is due to the interaction of satellite galaxies with the pair. Finally, we show that the $z=0$ signal is driven primarily by satellites that are on first approach, who have yet to experience a "flyby". This suggests that the signal seen in the observations is also dominated by dynamically young accretion events., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We present a detailed analysis of a quantum model for Loop Quantum Cosmology based on strict application of the Thiemann regularization algorithm for the Hamiltonian in Loop Quantum Gravity, extending the results presented previously in our brief report. This construction leads to a qualitative modification of the bounce paradigm. Quantum gravity effects still lead to a quantum bounce connecting deterministically large classical Universes. However, the evolution features a large epoch of de Sitter Universe, with emergent cosmological constant of Planckian order, smoothly transiting into a spatially flat expanding Universe. Moreover, we present an effective Hamiltonian describing the quantum evolution to high accuracy and for which the dynamics can be solved analytically., Comment: 51 pages, 15 figures

Observations of low-mass satellite galaxies in the nearby Universe point towards a strong dichotomy in their star-forming properties relative to systems with similar mass in the field. Specifically, satellite galaxies are preferentially gas poor and no longer forming stars, while their field counterparts are largely gas rich and actively forming stars. Much of the recent work to understand this dichotomy has been statistical in nature, determining not just that environmental processes are most likely responsible for quenching these low-mass systems but also that they must operate very quickly after infall onto the host system, with quenching timescales $\lesssim 2~ {\rm Gyr}$ at ${M}_{\star} \lesssim 10^{8}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$. This work utilizes the newly-available $Gaia$ DR2 proper motion measurements along with the Phat ELVIS suite of high-resolution, cosmological, zoom-in simulations to study low-mass satellite quenching around the Milky Way on an object-by-object basis. We derive constraints on the infall times for $37$ of the known low-mass satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, finding that $\gtrsim~70\%$ of the `classical' satellites of the Milky Way are consistent with the very short quenching timescales inferred from the total population in previous works. The remaining classical Milky Way satellites have quenching timescales noticeably longer, with $\tau_{\rm quench} \sim 6 - 8~{\rm Gyr}$, highlighting how detailed orbital modeling is likely necessary to understand the specifics of environmental quenching for individual satellite galaxies. Additionally, we find that the $6$ ultra-faint dwarf galaxies with publicly available $HST$-based star-formation histories are all consistent with having their star formation shut down prior to infall onto the Milky Way -- which, combined with their very early quenching times, strongly favors quenching driven by reionization., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Sch\"utzenberger, are certain $K$-theory representatives for Schubert varieties. Symplectic Grothendieck polynomials, described more recently by Wyser and Yong, represent the $K$-theory classes of orbit closures for the complex symplectic group acting on the complete flag variety. We prove a transition formula for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials and study their stable limits. We show that each of the $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse arises from a limiting procedure applied to symplectic Grothendieck polynomials representing certain "Grassmannian" orbit closures., Comment: 24 pages; v2: minor edits, updated references, final version

The complex orthogonal and symplectic groups both act on the complete flag variety with finitely many orbits. We study two families of polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong representing the $K$-theory classes of the closures of these orbits. Our polynomials are analogous to the Grothendieck polynomials representing $K$-classes of Schubert varieties, and we show that like Grothendieck polynomials, they are uniquely characterized among all polynomials representing the relevant classes by a certain stability property. We show that the same polynomials represent the equivariant $K$-classes of symmetric and skew-symmetric analogues of Knutson and Miller's matrix Schubert varieties. We derive explicit expressions for these polynomials in special cases, including a Pfaffian formula relying on a more general degeneracy locus formula of Anderson. Ultrafast Kelvin Waves (UFKWs) have been recently discovered at Mars using measurements by the Mars Atmosphere and Evolution (MAVEN) Accelerometer (ACC) instrument and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Mars Climate Sound (MCS) instrument [1]. UFKWs are eastward propagating, have a 2-3 sol period with sufficiently long vertical wavelengths to propagate into the thermosphere, and are predicted by classical wave theory to be equatorially trapped. These prior measurements characterized UFKWs at two relatively narrow altitude bands, with one measurement altitude near 80 km and a second near 150 km. Thermospheric density profiles from solar occultation (SO) measurements made by the Extreme Ultraviolet Monitor (EUVM) onboard MAVEN [2] provide a means to characterize multi-sol period waves, including UFKWs, as a function of altitude. In this study, we present first-ever observations of UFKWs as a function of altitude, including observations of rapid wave energy dissipation near 170 km indicative of wave breaking.

Quantum computation requires large classical datasets to be embedded into quantum states in order to exploit quantum parallelism. However, this embedding requires considerable resources. It would therefore be desirable to avoid it, if possible, for noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) implementation. Accordingly, we consider a classical-quantum hybrid architecture, which allows large classical input data, with a relatively small-scale quantum system. This hybrid architecture is used to implement an oracle. It is shown that in the presence of noise in the hybrid oracle, the effects of internal noise can cancel each other out and thereby improve the query success rate. It is also shown that such an immunity of the hybrid oracle to noise directly and tangibly reduces the sample complexity in the probably-approximately-correct learning framework. We study how dark solitons, i.e. solutions of one-dimensional single-particle nonlinear time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation, emerge from eigenstates of a linear many-body model of contact interacting bosons moving on a ring, the Lieb-Liniger model. This long-standing problem was addressed by various groups, which presented different, seemingly unrelated, procedures to reveal the solitonic waves directly from the many-body model. Here, we propose a unification of these results using a simple Ansatz for the many-body eigenstate of the Lieb-Liniger model, which gives us access to systems of hundreds of atoms. In this approach, mean-field solitons emerge in a single-particle density through repeated measurements of particle positions in the Ansatz state. We explore artificial neural networks as a tool for the reconstruction of spectral functions from imaginary time Green's functions, a classic ill-conditioned inverse problem. Our ansatz is based on a supervised learning framework in which prior knowledge is encoded in the training data and the inverse transformation manifold is explicitly parametrised through a neural network. We systematically investigate this novel reconstruction approach, providing a detailed analysis of its performance on physically motivated mock data, and compare it to established methods of Bayesian inference. The reconstruction accuracy is found to be at least comparable, and potentially superior in particular at larger noise levels. We argue that the use of labelled training data in a supervised setting and the freedom in defining an optimisation objective are inherent advantages of the present approach and may lead to significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods in the future. (Abridged) The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is an end-to-end science platform for the design, execution and scientific exploitation of spectroscopic surveys. It will unveil the composition and dynamics of the faint Universe and impact nearly every field of astrophysics across all spatial scales, from individual stars to the largest scale structures in the Universe. Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary surveys that have occurred in the nearby Universe, but now conducted at the peak of the star formation history of the Universe (iii) derivation of the mass of the neutrino and insights into inflationary physics through a cosmological redshift survey that probes a large volume of the Universe with a high galaxy density. MSE is positioned to become a critical hub in the emerging international network of front-line astronomical facilities, with scientific capabilities that naturally complement and extend the scientific power of Gaia, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, the Square Kilometer Array, Euclid, WFIRST, the 30m telescopes and many more., Comment: 9 chapters, 301 pages, 100 figures. Globally distributed groups require collaborative systems to support their work. Besides being able to support the teamwork, these systems also should promote well-being and maximize the human potential that leads to an engaging system and joyful experience. Designing such system is a significant challenge and requires a thorough understanding of group work. We used the field theory as a lens to view the essential aspects of group motivation and then utilized collaboration personas to analyze the elements of group work. We integrated well-being determinants as engagement factors to develop a group-centered framework for digital collaboration in a global setting. The main goal of this paper is to define a collaborative innovation process as well as a supporting tool. It is motivated through the increasing competition on global markets and the resultant propagation of decentralized projects with a high demand of innovative collaboration in global contexts. It bases on a project accomplished by the author group. A detailed literature review and the action design research methodology of the project led to an enhanced process model for decentral collaborative innovation processes and a basic realization of a browser based real time tool to enable these processes. Unsharp quantum measurements provide a resource in scenarios where one faces the trade-off between information gain and disturbance. In this work we introduce a prepare-transform-measure scenario in which two-outcome unsharp measurements outperform their sharp counterparts, as well as any stochastic strategy involving dichotomic projective measurements. Based on that, we propose a scheme for semi-device-independent self-testing of unsharp measurements and show that all two-outcome qubit measurements can be characterized in a robust way. Along with the main result, in this work we introduce a method, based on semidefinite programming, for bounding quantum correlations in scenarios with sequential measurements of length two. This method can also be applied to refine security analysis of the semi-device-independent one-way quantum key distribution. The Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy, and Centaurus A host flattened distributions of satellite galaxies which exhibits coherent velocity trends indicative of rotation. Comparably extreme satellite structures are very rare in cosmological LCDM simulations, giving rise to the `satellite plane problem'. As a possible explanation it has been suggested that earlier-forming, higher concentration host halos contain more flattened and kinematically coherent satellite planes. We have tested for such a proposed correlation between the satellite plane and host halo properties in the ELVIS suite of simulations. We find evidence neither for a correlation of plane flattening with halo concentration or formation time, nor for a correlation of kinematic coherence with concentration. The height of the thinnest sub-halo planes does correlate with the host virial radius and with the radial extent of the sub-halo system. This can be understood as an effect of not accounting for differences in the radial distribution of sub-halos, and selecting them from different volumes than covered by the actual observations. Being part of a halo pair like the Local Group does not result in more narrow or more correlated satellite planes either. Additionally, using the PhatELVIS simulations we show that the presence of a central galaxy potential does not favor more narrow or more correlated satellite planes, it rather leads to slightly wider planes. Such a central potential is a good approximation of the dominant effect baryonic physics in cosmological simulations has on a sub-halo population. We discuss how astrophysical observations with the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE), a high-multiplexity (about 4300 fibers), wide field-of-view (1.5 square degree), large telescope aperture (11.25 m) facility, can probe the particle nature of dark matter. MSE will conduct a suite of surveys that will provide critical input for determinations of the mass function, phase-space distribution, and internal density profiles of dark matter halos across all mass scales. N-body and hydrodynamical simulations of cold, warm, fuzzy and self-interacting dark matter suggest that non-trivial dynamics in the dark sector could have left an imprint on structure formation. Analysed within these frameworks, the extensive and unprecedented datasets produced by MSE will be used to search for deviations away from cold and collisionless dark matter model. MSE will provide an improved estimate of the local density of dark matter, critical for direct detection experiments, and will improve estimates of the J-factor for indirect searches through self-annihilation or decay into Standard Model particles. MSE will determine the impact of low mass substructures on the dynamics of Milky Way stellar streams in velocity space, and will allow for estimates of the density profiles of the dark matter halos of Milky Way dwarf galaxies using more than an order of magnitude more tracers. In the low redshift Universe, MSE will provide critical redshifts to pin down the luminosity functions of vast numbers of satellite systems, and MSE will be an essential component of future strong lensing measurements to constrain the halo mass function. Across nearly all mass scales, the improvements offered by MSE, in comparison to other facilities, are such that the relevant analyses are limited by systematics rather than statistics., Comment: 44 pages, 19 figures.
