Im Experiment mit Katzen zeigte es sich, dass Hypoglossusfasern in die postganglionaren, parasympathischen sekretorischen Nervenfasern zur Parotisdruse hineinwachsen konnen, so dass bei einer elektrischen Reizung des Nervus hypoglossus Sekretion erfolgt.

• Twenty mentally retarded patients with a considerable drooling problem underwent transtympanic sectioning of selected preganglionic parasympathetic nerve fibers to the major salivary glands. Following surgery, cessation of troublesome sialorrhea occurred in 15 of 20 patients; but by six months postoperatively, only ten patients remained controlled. The best results obtained were in a subgroup of five patients who underwent bilateral Jacobson nerve and chorda tympani nerve section. In four of these patients, sialorrhea was controlled after a minimum follow-up of two years. Parasympathetic denervation of the major salivary glands via a transtympanic approach is offered as a primary modality of therapy in those mentally retarded patients judged to have considerable sialorrhea. Sacrifice of both chorda tympani nerves appears to enhance the surgical results.

The observation of sweating responses affords an excellent opportunity to study the vegetative cutaneous innervation. This is of particular physiologic and diagnostic interest in the region of the face, since other methods, such as observation of the pilomotor and vasomotor reactions, fail to give adequate information. It has been established that the sweat glands of the face, similar to those of the rest of the body, are innervated by sympathetic fibers, but there is also evidence that a parasympathetic nerve supply exists. A review of the literature reveals considerable disagreement as to the course of the sweat fibers of the face. It is therefore our endeavor in this investigation (1) to trace the course and distribution of the sympathetic sweat fibers from the superior cervical ganglion to the skin of the face and (2) to analyze sweating responses of the face which are apparently not transmitted by sympathetic fibers.
