Purpose: This paper describes the iterative development of a home review program designed to augment vocabulary instruction for young children (ages 4 and 5) occurring at school through the use of a home review component. Method: A pilot study followed by two experiments used adapted alternating treatment designs to compare the learning of academic words taught at school to words taught at school and reviewed at home. At school, children in small groups were taught academic words embedded in prerecorded storybooks for six weeks. Children were given materials such as stickers with review prompts (e.g., "Tell me what brave means") to take home for half the words. Across iterations of the home intervention, the home review component was enhanced by promoting parent engagement and buy-in through in-person training, video modeling, and daily text message reminders. Visual analyses of single-subject graphs, multi-level modeling, and social validity measures were used to evaluate the additive effects and feasibility of the home review component. Results: Social validity results informed each iteration of the home program. The effects of the home program across sites were mixed, with only one site showing consistently strong effects. Superior learning was evident in the school + home review condition for families that reviewed words frequently at home. Although the home review program was effective in improving the vocabulary skills of many children, other families had considerable difficulty practicing vocabulary words. Conclusion: These studies highlight the importance of using social validity measures to inform iterative development of home interventions that promote feasible strategies for enhancing the home language environment. Further research is needed to identify strategies that stimulate facilitators and overcome barriers to implementation, especially in high stress homes, to enrich the home language environments of more families. Language provides speakers with a rich system of modality for expressing thoughts about events, without being committed to their actual occurrence. Modality is commonly used in the political news domain, where both actual and possible courses of events are discussed. NLP systems struggle with these semantic phenomena, often incorrectly extracting events which did not happen, which can lead to issues in downstream applications. We present an open-domain, lexicon-based event extraction system that captures various types of modality. This information is valuable for Question Answering, Knowledge Graph construction and Fact-checking tasks, and our evaluation shows that the system is sufficiently strong to be used in downstream applications., Comment: S. Many differentially private algorithms for answering database queries involve a step that reconstructs a discrete data distribution from noisy measurements. This provides consistent query answers and reduces error, but often requires space that grows exponentially with dimension. Private-PGM is a recent approach that uses graphical models to represent the data distribution, with complexity proportional to that of exact marginal inference in a graphical model with structure determined by the co-occurrence of variables in the noisy measurements. Private-PGM is highly scalable for sparse measurements, but may fail to run in high dimensions with dense measurements. We overcome the main scalability limitation of Private-PGM through a principled approach that relaxes consistency constraints in the estimation objective. Our new approach works with many existing private query answering algorithms and improves scalability or accuracy with no privacy cost.

Modern radio interferometers such as the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) are capable of producing data at hundreds of gigabits to terabits per second. This high data rate makes the analysis of radio data cumbersome and computationally expensive. While high performance computing facilities exist for large national and international facilities, that may not be the case for instruments operated by a single institution or a small consortium. Data rates for next generation radio telescopes are set to eclipse those currently in operation, hence local processing of data will become all the more important. Here, we introduce the REAL-time Transient Acquisition backend (REALTA), a computing backend at the Irish LOFAR station (I-LOFAR) which facilitates the recording of data in near real-time and post-processing. We propose a general approach for differentially private synthetic data generation, that consists of three steps: (1) select a collection of low-dimensional marginals, (2) measure those marginals with a noise addition mechanism, and (3) generate synthetic data that preserves the measured marginals well. Central to this approach is Private-PGM, a post-processing method that is used to estimate a high-dimensional data distribution from noisy measurements of its marginals. We present two mechanisms, NIST-MST and MST, that are instances of this general approach. NIST-MST was the winning mechanism in the 2018 NIST differential privacy synthetic data competition, and MST is a new mechanism that can work in more general settings, while still performing comparably to NIST-MST. We report a measurement of the $D^0$ and $D^+$ lifetimes using $D^0\to K^-\pi^+$ and $D^+\to K^-\pi^+\pi^+$ decays reconstructed in $e^+e^-\to c\bar{c}$ data recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The data, collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, correspond to an integrated luminosity of $72\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$. The results, $\tau(D^0) = 410.5\pm1.1\,{\rm(stat)}\pm0.8\,{\rm(syst.)}\,{\rm fs}$ and $\tau(D^+) = 1030.4\pm4.7\,{\rm(stat)}\pm3.1\,{\rm(syst.)}\,{\rm fs}$, are the most precise to date and are consistent with previous determinations., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

We study "distance spheres": the set of points lying at constant distance from a fixed arbitrary subset $K$ of $[0,1]^d$. We show that, away from the regions where $K$ is "too dense" and a set of small volume, we can decompose $[0,1]^d$ into a finite number of sets on which the distance spheres can be "straightened" into subsets of parallel $(d-1)$-dimensional planes by a bi-Lipschitz map. The ALPHA collaboration has successfully demonstrated the production and the confinement of cold antihydrogen, $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$. An analysis of trapping data allowed a stringent limit to be placed on the electric charge of the simplest antiatom. Charge neutrality of matter is known to a very high precision, hence a neutrality limit of $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ provides a test of CPT invariance. The experimental technique is based on the measurement of the deflection of putatively charged $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ in an electric field. The tendency for trapped $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ atoms to be displaced by electrostatic fields is measured and compared to the results of a detailed simulation of $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ dynamics in the trap. An extensive survey of the systematic errors is performed, with particular attention to those due to the silicon vertex detector, which is the device used to determine the $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ annihilation position. The limit obtained on the charge of the $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$ atom is \mbox{$ Q = (-1.3\pm1.8\pm0.4)\times10^{-8}$}, representing the first precision measurement with $\overline{\mathrm{H}}$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures
