Abstract

Recent efforts to model the reactivity of iron oxygenases have led to the generation of nonheme FeIII(OOH) and FeIV(O) intermediates from FeII complexes and O2 but using different cofactors. This diversity emphasizes the rich chemistry of nonheme Fe(II) complexes with dioxygen. We report an original mechanistic study of the reaction of [(TPEN)FeII]2+ with O2 carried out by cyclic voltammetry. From this FeII precursor, reaction intermediates such as [(TPEN)FeIV(O)]2+, [(TPEN)FeIII(OOH)]2+ and [(TPEN)FeIII(OO)]+ have been chemically generated in high yield, and characterized electrochemically. These electrochemical data have been used to analyse and perform simulation of the cyclic voltammograms of [(TPEN)FeII]2+ in the presence of O2. Thus, several important mechanistic informations on this reaction have been obtained. An unfavourable chemical equilibrium between O2 and the FeII complex occurs that leads to the FeIII-peroxo complex upon reduction, similarly to heme enzymes such as P450. However, unlike in heme systems, further reduction of this latter intermediate does not result in O–O bond cleavage.

Abstract

The mechanistic aspects of the electrochemical reduction of phenacylthio- and selenocyanates have been studied. With phenacylthiocyanates (1), a change in the reductive cleavage mechanism is observed as a function of the substituent on the phenyl ring. While a stepwise mechanism involving the intermediacy of a radical anion is followed for substrates bearing a strong electron withdrawing group, such as cyano and nitro substituent (1d, 1e), and a concerted mechanism is favoured for compounds bearing an electron-donating or no substituent on the phenyl ring (1a–c). A regioselective bond cleavage leads to the fragmentation of the CH2–S bond with all compounds 1a–e, further yielding the corresponding 1,4-diketone (3) as products. Contrastingly, with phenacylselenocyanates (2), two different reductive cleavages occur involving the breaking of both the CH2–Se and Se–CN bonds. Several products are obtained, all coming from nucleophilic attack at the α (phenacyl) carbon or the selenium atom. Fil: Bouchet, Lydia María. Abstract

A series of nickel(II) complexes bearing tetradentate macrocyclic N4, N3S, and N3P ligands were synthesized, and their photocatalytic activity toward proton reduction has been investigated by using [Ir(dF(CF3)ppy)2(dmbpy)]PF6 (dF(CF3)ppy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-5-trifluoromethylpyridine and dmbpy = 4,4′-dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridyl) as the photosensitizer and triethylamine (TEA) as the sacrificial reductant. The complex [Ni(L4)]2+ (L4 = 2,12-dimethyl-7-phenyl-3,11,17-triaza-7-phospha-bicyclo[11,3,1]heptadeca-1(17),13,15-triene), which bears a phosphorus donor atom, shows the highest efficiency with TON up to 5000 under optimized conditions, while the tetraaza macrocyclic nickel complexes [Ni(L1)]2+ and [Ni(L2)]2+ (L1 = 2,12-dimethyl-3,7,11,17-tetra-azabicyclo[11.3.l]heptadeca-1(17),2,11,13,15-pentaene; L2 = 2,12-dimethyl-3,7,11,17-tetra-azabicyclo[11.3.l]heptadeca-1(17),13,15-triene) show lower photocatalytic activities. Abstract

The mechanism of the Ullmann-type reaction between potassium thioacetate (KSAc) and iodobenzene (PhI) catalyzed by CuI associated with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) as a ligand was explored experimentally and computationally. The study on C–S bond formation was investigated by UV–visible spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry, mass spectrometry, and products assessment from radical probes. The results indicate that under experimental conditions the catalytically active species is [Cu(phen)(SAc)] regardless of the copper source. An examination of the aryl halide activation mechanism using radical probes was undertaken. No evidence of the presence of radical species was found during the reaction process, which is consistent with an oxidative addition cross-coupling pathway. The different reaction pathways leading to the experimentally observed reaction products were studied by DFT calculation. The oxidative addition–reductive elimination mechanism via an unstable CuIII intermediate is energetically more feasible than other possible mechanisms such as single electron transfer, halogen atom transfer, and σ-bond methatesis. 358. SAT : Security in the air using Tesla

Abstract

Automated Dependent Surveillance — Broadcast (ADS-B) is an aircraft surveillance technology introduced as part of the US Next-Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) initiative, in which aircraft broadcast their position based on satellite navigation (e.g. GPS). This information can then be used by other aircraft for traffic awareness and collision avoidance (TCAS), and by ground personnel to provide air traffic control (ATC) services. Unfortunately, ADS-B presents important security problems, since there are no integral mechanisms for message authentication nor message integrity verification. In this paper, we propose SAT, a secure, backward-compatible replacement for ADS-B. SAT uses the TESLA broadcast authentication protocol, a hybrid solution that combines the advantages of symmetric cryptography (low use of bandwidth) with those of asymmetric cryptography (no shared keys). Our proposal adapts the TESLA constructs in order to make it suitable for use in ATC and collision avoidance. In particular, we replace the synchronization mechanism of TESLA with the use of satellite time, thus making the implementation more lightweight. We also use a public key infrastructure based on the air traffic control hierarchy (including national civil aviation authorities and potentially ICAO), in order to allow for SAT to be used not only for aircraft authentication but also for aircraft flight authorization. We implemented the SAT protocol on SDR and performed laboratory experiments in order to measure computation and transmission overheads, and to determine the shortest authentication delay we could achieve. In particular, we explored the trade-off between interval duration and bandwidth use. Finally, we tested our new protocol on SDR.

International audience; Les communications sans contact sont omniprésentes dans notre quotidien, allant des badges de contrôle d'accès au passeport électronique. Ces systèmes sont sensibles aux attaques par relais, dans lesquelles un adversaire transfère simplement les messages entre le prouveur et le vérifieur pour usurper l'identité du prouveur. Les protocoles délimiteurs de distance (distance-bounding) ont été ont ntroduits pour contrer ces attaques en assurant une borne sur la distance entre le prouveur et le vérifieur grâcè a la mesure du temps des communications. Par la suite de nombreux travaux ont amélioré la sécurité de ces protocoles, mais ont aussi cherché à assurer le respect de la vie privée face à des adversaires actifs et également face à des vérifieurs malicieux. En particulier, une menace difficile à prévenir est la fraude terroriste, où un prouveur lointain coopère avec un complice proche pour tromper le vérifieur. La contre-mesure usuelle pour cette menace est de rendre impossible l'action du complice sans l'aide du prouveur lointain, à moins que le prouveur ne lui donne suffisamment d'information pour qu'il retrouve sa clef privée et puisse ainsi toujours se faire passer pour le prouveur. Dans cet article, nous proposons une nouvelle approche où le prouveur ne révèle pas sa clef privée mais utilise une clef de session avec une signature de groupe, la rendant ainsi utilisable plusieurs fois. Ceci permet à un adversaire d'usurper l'identité du prouveur sans même connaître sa clef de signature. Grâce à cette approche nous proposons SPADE le premier protocole de délimiteur de distance qui est anonyme, révocable et formellement prouvé sûr. Abstract

Distance-bounding protocols have been introduced to thwart relay attacks against contactless authentication protocols. In this context, verifiers have to authenticate the credentials of untrusted provers. Unfortunately, these protocols are themselves subject to complex threats such as terrorist-fraud attacks, in which a malicious prover helps an accomplice to authenticate. Provably guaranteeing the resistance of distance-bounding protocols to these attacks is complex. The classical solutions assume that rational provers want to protect their long-term authentication credentials, even with respect to their accomplices. Thus, terrorist-fraud resistant protocols generally rely on artificial extraction mechanisms, ensuring that an accomplice can retrieve the credential of his partnering prover, if he is able to authenticate. We propose a novel approach to obtain provable terrorist-fraud resistant protocols that does not rely on an accomplice being able to extract any long-term key. Instead, we simply assume that he can replay the information received from the prover. Thus, rational provers should refuse to cooperate with third parties if they can impersonate them freely afterwards. We introduce a generic construction for provably secure distance-bounding protocols, and give three instances of this construction: (1) an efficient symmetric-key protocol, (2) a public-key protocol protecting the identities of provers against external eavesdroppers, and finally (3) a fully anonymous protocol protecting the identities of provers even against malicious verifiers that try to profile them.

Abstract

Small Molecule Activation; International audience; Reduction of CO2 is a fruitful approach for storage of renewable electric energy as well as for the production of value added chemicals. Using variously substituted iron tetraphenylporphyrins and iron and cobalt macrocyclic pentadendate N5 complexes electrochemically or photochemically reduced to their active states, selective and efficient molecular catalysis of the CO2-to-CO and of the CO2-to-HCOOH conversion was achieved at low overpotential. From fruitful joint experimental and mechanistic studies rooted in the analysis of cyclic voltammograms, the mechanisms for catalysis were fully deciphered, allowing not only to give a complete picture of the catalytic processes but also to identify the main parameters for optimizing the catalyst structure. Efficient CO2 catalysis was performed not only in aprotic but also in aqueous conditions, opening the way to the design of electrochemical or photo-electrochemical cells, a key step for future applied devices.

Abstract

Significance Conversion of CO 2 into liquid fuels is one of the most important contemporary energy and environmental challenges. As a first step in this direction, the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to CO requires catalysts, usually derived from transition metal complexes. In this paper, a very efficient, electrogenerated iron-porphyrin catalyst was obtained by introducing both pendant acid groups and fluorine substituents in the molecule. The former stabilize the CO 2 -catalyst key intermediate via H bonding and provide a high local proton concentration. The latter help decrease the energy required to drive catalysis. Benchmarking this molecule with other catalysts shows that it is at present the most efficient, to the best of our knowledge, homogeneous molecular catalyst of the CO 2 -to-CO conversion in terms of selectivity, overpotential, and turnover frequency.

Abstract

A photochemical catalytic reduction of CO2 was performed in an organic solvent with iron(0) porphyrins as homogeneous molecular catalysts under visible light irradiation. With modified tetraphenylporphyrins consisting of internal phenolic groups, the photochemical process led to the production of CO, with H2 as a minor product. High catalytic selectivity for CO formation and turnover numbers up to 30 were obtained. Degradation of the catalyst occurred at longer irradiation times, along with decreased selectivity. Furthermore, addition of a weak acid, which increased the reduction efficiency under electrochemical conditions, led to rapid deactivation of the catalyst. With the unmodified tetraphenylporphyrin as catalyst, we observed lower performance and higher proportion of H2, which highlighted differences in the reduction pathways followed. A combination of a spectroscopic study and product analysis performed under various conditions led to detailed reduction mechanisms and helped pave the way for designing durable photocatalytic systems.

Abstract

Improving anomaly-based malware detection techniques has been widely studied in recent years. Most of these efforts have focused on the dataset available for analysis and/or the algorithms used to distinguish between normal or abnormal behavior. These factors have major impacts on the accuracy performance of the detection techniques as well as on their time and space complexities. In this paper, we revisit a classical anomaly-based malware detection approach (i.e., database of normal behavior) analyzing Android system calls with two conflicting objectives: reducing the time and space complexities of the selected approach without decreasing its accuracy performance. To achieve this goal, we introduce a filtering and abstraction process, which (i) removes irrelevant system calls to describe the main behavior of an Android application and (ii) unifies system calls having the same functionality but different names. This process is used to build a database describing a canonical normal behavior model of Android applications. This model is based on the 200 most popular free Android applications available in the Android market. It represents the last line of defense of an in-depth protection strategy for smartphone systems. The results of our experimentations show that our filtering and abstraction process has positive impacts on the performance and the accuracy of the selected malware detection approach. Abstract

Electrochemical investigation of the title CoII compound in acetonitrile with a strong acid (HClO4) showed no sign of proton catalysis at the CoII/CoI wave, but instead revealed the formation of Co based nanoparticles at the surface of the carbon electrode. Catalytic proton reduction of the resulting nanometer sized cobalt particles at pH 7 was found to occur efficiently. Partial coverage of the carbon substrate by the particles leads to an apparent exchange current density as high as those obtained at a pure cobalt electrode or cobalt films.

Abstract

2590 Background: CD4 T helper cells are key orchestrators of immunity in states of persistent antigen exposure. In chronic viral infection, loss of immune control is associated with CD4 differentiation skewing (CD4ds) resulting from decline of early progenitors and gain in abundance of exhausted and terminally differentiated subsets. Here, we set out to identify whether a similar process occurs within the tumour microenvironment, contributing to immune dysfunction. Methods: Multiregional samples of tumour and non-tumour lung tissue from patients with untreated, surgically resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) within the first 100 recruited to the prospective lung TRACERx study were analysed by high dimensional flow cytometry of tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and paired bulk tumour exome and RNA sequencing. We additionally reanalysed publically available single T cell and bulk tumour RNA sequencing from patients with NSCLC. Results: Unsupervised clustering and dimension reduction revealed a heterogenous landscape of CD4 TILs, with evidence of CD4ds in association with tumour mutational burden. Loss of PD1-CCR7+ T central memory enriched early differentiated cells was accompanied by gain in abundance of PD1+ populations with exhausted (CD57-ICOShiCTLA4hi) and terminally differentiated effector (CD57+Eomes+) phenotypes. Further characterisation of these populations by single cell RNA sequencing revealed differential expression of key genes involved in transcriptional regulation, co-inhibition and co-stimulatory pathways. A validated gene signature of CD4ds was associated with worse outcomes in TRACERx and TCGA cohorts. Conclusions: Our findings reveal remodelling of the CD4 differentiation landscape in association with tumour genomic characteristics, underscoring how mutational burden in the context of chronic stimulation may lead to loss of immune fitness and elucidating key regulatory pathways in potentially clinically relevant CD4 subsets.

Abstract

Neurofibrillary tangles likely cause neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). We demonstrate that the CX3CL1 C-terminal domain can upregulate neurogenesis, which may ameliorate neurodegeneration. Here we generated transgenic (Tg-CX3CL1) mice by overexpressing CX3CL1 in neurons. Tg-CX3CL1 mice exhibit enhanced neurogenesis in both subgranular and subventricular zones. This enhanced neurogenesis correlates well with elevated expression of TGF-J32 and TGF-/33, and activation of their downstream signaling molecule Smad2. Intriguingly, the enhanced adult neurogenesis was mitigated when Smad2 expression was deleted in neurons, supporting a role for the CX3CLl-TGF-/32/3-Smad2 pathway in the control of adult neurogenesis. When Tg-CX3CL1 mice were crossed with Alzheimer's PS 19 mice, which overexpress a tau P30IS mutation and exhibit age-dependent neurofibrillary tangles and neurodegeneration, overexpressed CX3CL1 in both male and female mice was sufficient to rescue the neurodegeneration, increase survival time, and improve cognitive function. Hence, we provide in vivo evidence that CX3CL1 is a strong activator of adult neurogenesis, and that it reduces neuronal loss and improves cognitive function in AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper proposes new mechanisms for locating or tracking a noncooperative and immobile transmitter in wireless communication networks. They rely on a set of trusted cooperative receivers that are able to measure the residual strengths of the received signals from the transmitter. These mechanisms cannot rely on the information provided by the transmitter because the latter can be malicious. The best solution presented in the literature to solve this problem is the hyperbolic position bounding algorithm. Unfortunately, it uses an inaccurate approximation of the difference of two log-normal random variables. When the uncertainty on the effective isotropic radiated power used by the transmitter is high, the hyperbolic position bounding algorithm gives erroneous results. Thus, we propose new algorithms that rely either on better approximations or a geometric interpretation of the problem. We also evaluate the impacts of using multiple independent signals to detect the transmitter. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract

The QOLSR is a multimedia protocol that was designed on top of the optimized link state routing (OLSR) protocol for mobile ad hoc network. It considers the quality of service (QoS) of the nodes during the selection of the multi-point relay (MPRs) nodes. One of the drawbacks of this protocol is the presence of selfish nodes that degrade the network lifetime. The limited energy and resources, and the absence of any motivation mechanism cause mobile nodes to behave selfishly during the MPRs selection. A new MPR selection based on cluster head election was proposed in previous work to increase network lifetime. In this paper, we consider the selfishness during the election and selection process by proposing the use of reputation system that will motivate nodes to participate during the selection of MPRs, where the reputation is calculated based on VCG mechanism design. After solving the selfishness during network formation, we have discovered that nodes can misbehave after being selected/elected. Such a passive malicious behavior could lead to a denial of service attack due to the drop of packets. As a solution, we propose a hierarchal cooperative watchdog detection model for the cluster-based QOLSR, where nodes cooperate in a hierarchical manner to detect selfish nodes. Moreover, to motivate watchdogs to monitor and cooperate with each other, incentives are given and calculated using cooperative game theory, where Shapley value is used to compute the contribution of each watchdog on the final decision. Simulation results show that the novel cluster-based QoS-OLSR model can give incentive to nodes to behave normally without sacrificing the quality of service of the network. In addition, the hierarchical cooperative detection model shows a more reliable and efficient detection of selfish nodes.

Depuis le debut des annees 2000, et l�agenda de Lisbonne, la politique europeenne d�innovation mobilise des ressources financieres croissantes afin de favoriser l�emergence de l�economie du savoir et de l�innovation. En contexte d�economie mondialisee et concurrentielle, l�innovation apparait aux dirigeants politiques comme le meilleur moyen d�assurer la perennite et le developpement des entreprises de ce continent. Dans les economies emergentes, l�innovation a egalement ete consideree cette derniere decennie comme un facteur majeur de developpement au regard des moyens tres importants mobilises en capitaux et en ressources humaines, moyens qui aujourd�hui sont en passe de devenir superieurs a ceux investis par les Europeens. En effet, a ce jour un million de chercheurs sont presents en Chine avec un objectif de quatre millions, et 700 000 en Inde avec un objectif de trois millions (cf. Le Monde, 2 avril 2012). Toutefois, si l�innovation semble bien etre un imperatif pour la performance des entreprises, la duree de vie des innovations est constamment raccourcie du fait de l�evolution technologique et scientifique. Or, dans la sphere des decideurs publics ou prives, l�innovation a longtemps ete reduite a sa dimension technologique (produits, procedes).

Abstract

Electrochemical investigation on differently substituted boron-caped and glyoximato-strapped ligands of cobalt clathrochelate complexes in the presence of acid revealed the formation of cobalt-based nanoparticles at the surface of the electrode. The potential for the electrochemical deposition is a function of the chemical nature of the substituents. The overpotential for the catalytic proton reduction of the resulting cobalt particles at pH 7 was found to be ∼700 mV less negative than on the bare carbon electrode for a geometric current density of 5 mA/cm2.

Abstract

Most of the electrocatalytic processes of interest in the resolution of modern energy challenges are associated with proton transfer. In the cases where heavy atom bond cleavage occurs concomitantly, the question arises of the exact nature of its coupling with proton-electron transfer within the catalytic cycle. The cleavage of a C-O bond in the catalyzed electrochemical conversion of CO2 to CO offers the opportunity to address this question. Electrochemically generated iron(0) porphyrins are efficient, specific, and durable catalysts provided they are coupled with Lewis or Brönsted acids. The cocatalyst properties of four Brönsted acids of increasing strength, water, trifluoroethanol, phenol, and acetic acid, have been systematically investigated. Preparative-scale electrolyses showed that carbon monoxide is the only product of the catalytic reaction. Methodic application of a nondestructive technique, cyclic voltammetry, with catalyst and CO2 concentrations, as well as H/D isotope effect, as diagnostic parameters allowed the dissection of the reaction mechanism. It appears that the key step of the reaction sequence consists of an electron transfer from the catalyst concerted with the cleavage of a C-O bond and the transfer of one proton. This is the second example, and an intermolecular version of such a concerted proton-electron bond-breaking reaction after a similar electrochemical process involving the cleavage of O-O bonds has been identified. It is the first time that a proton-electron transfer concerted with bond breaking has been uncovered as the crucial step in a catalytic multistep reaction.

Cette recherche s'inscrit dans les nouvelles approches de l'innovation qui mettent l'accent sur l'importance des strategies de cooperation. Les auteurs etudient le lien entre les differentes strategies de cooperation et l'innovation produit, en fonction du type de partenaire avec qui la cooperation est etablie. Deux grands types de cooperation sont etudies et confrontes : la cooperation avec des non-concurrents et la cooperation avec des concurrents (coopetition). Les recherches anterieures ayant abouti a des resultats contradictoires, ils proposent ici des hypotheses de recherche qui introduisent une variable supplementaire dans l'analyse : la nationalite des concurrents. Ils testent les hypotheses sur un echantillon d'entreprises francaises issues de la base de donnees CIS (2004) et presentent les principaux resultats.

Abstract

The cleavage of metal–oxygen or metal–carbon bonds is an essential step in the activation by transition metal complex catalysis of small molecules involved in the resolution of modern energy challenges. Deciphering the role of proton transfer as promoter of such reactions is an essential piece of knowledge in this connection, notably in establishing the degree of concertedness between the three associated events; electron transfer, proton transfer and bond breaking. The reductive cleavage of the cobalt–carbon bond of a tetraphenylporphyrin, reminiscent of vitamin B12 derivatives, is taken as an example. A systematic cyclic voltammetric analysis of the catalytic currents resulting from the reduction of the cobalt(II) porphyrin upon addition of an alkyl halide and an acid shows that, among all possible mechanisms, proton transfer and bond breaking are concerted but are not concerted with electron transfer.

Abstract

The direct and catalyzed electrochemistry of CO(2) partake in the contemporary attempts to reduce this inert molecule to fuels by means of solar energy, either directly, after conversion of light to electricity, or indirectly in that all elements of comprehension derived from electrochemical experiments can be used in the design and interpretation of photochemical experiments. Following reviews of the activity in the field until 2007-2008, the present review reports more recent findings even if their interpretation remains uncertain. It also develops useful notions that allow analyzing and comparing more rigorously the performances of existing catalysts when the necessary data are available. Among the general trends that transpire presently and are likely to be the object of active future work emphasis is put on the favorable role of acid addition in homogeneous catalytic systems and on the crucial chemical role of the electrode material in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract

Multivariate graphs are prolific across many fields, including transportation and neuroscience. A key task in graph analysis is the exploration of connectivity, to, for example, analyze how signals flow through neurons, or to explore how well different cities are connected by flights. While standard node-link diagrams are helpful in judging connectivity, they do not scale to large networks. Adjacency matrices also do not scale to large networks and are only suitable to judge connectivity of adjacent nodes. A key approach to realize scalable graph visualization are queries: instead of displaying the whole network, only a relevant subset is shown. Query-based techniques for analyzing connectivity in graphs, however, can also easily suffer from cluttering if the query result is big enough. To remedy this, we introduce techniques that provide an overview of the connectivity and reveal details on demand. We have two main contributions: (1) two novel visualization techniques that work in concert for summarizing graph connectivity; and (2) Graffinity, an open-source implementation of these visualizations supplemented by detail views to enable a complete analysis workflow. Graffinity was designed in a close collaboration with neuroscientists and is optimized for connectomics data analysis, yet the technique is applicable across domains.
