356. Metallic glass as a mechanical material for microscanners

Abstract

Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) actuators essentially have movable silicon structures where the mechanical motion can be activated electronically. The microscanner is one of the most successfully commercialized MEMS devices which are widely used for collecting optical information, manipulating light, and displaying images. While silicon is abundant, it is also brittle and stiff and when microprocessed, defects are not uncommon. These defects result in weakness under torsional stress and this has been the key factor limiting the scanning performance of the microscanner. Here a metallic glass (MG)-based microscanner is reported with MG as the material for the moving torsion bars. The low elastic modulus, high fracture toughness, and high strength of MG offers, for the first time, an ultralarge rotating angle of 146 degrees with power consumption lowered to the microwatt range, and a smaller driving force and better actuation performance, than conventional single crystal silicon and polycrystalline silicon. The high spatial resolution and large scanning field of the MG-based microscanner are demonstrated in the tomographic imaging of a human finger. This development of an MG-based MEMS possibly opens a new field of low-powered MEMS devices with extreme actuation and enhanced sensing.

Abstract

This work presents novel diamond-based nanostructures formed by a fluorescent nanodiamond core coated with a gold shell (ND@Au). Gold shell was grown on silicon-doped nanodiamonds in water by controlled reduction of gold chloride. The resulting gold-coated nanodiamond samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, UV-visible, Raman and luminescence spectroscopies. These gold-coated nanodiamonds showed a strong resonance absorption in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) range. When excited with green laser, the silicon doped nanodiamonds emit a stable fluorescence peaked at about 740 nm due to the SiV centers with no photobleaching and photoblinking. In this work we demonstrate that optical properties of the silicon-doped nanodiamonds are retained after the formation of the gold shell.

358. Effects of solution time and cooling rate on microstructures and mechanical properties of 2219 Al alloy for a larger spun thin-wall ellipsoidal head

Abstract

The effects of solution time and cooling rate on microstructures and mechanical properties of 2219 Al alloy for a larger spun thin-wall ellipsoidal head are investigated. It is found that the Al2Cu phases are greatly affected by the solution time. The content of Al2Cu phases first decreases and then stabilizes with increasing the solution time. Moreover, the effects of solution time on the transformation of precipitates are obvious. As the solution time is increased from 35 min to 60 min, almost all the precipitates transfer from GP zones to θ′′ phases. When the solution time is further increased to 110 min, some θ′ phases appear. Meanwhile, the size of θ′′ phases increases, while the density of θ′′ phases drops. These microstructure changes greatly influence the mechanical properties, i.e., the hardness and tensile strengths first increase and then slightly decrease with the continuous increase of the solution time. In addition, if the cooling rate is decreased, the precipitation of coarse equilibrium θ phases is enhanced, but the precipitation of strengthening phases (θ′′, θ′) is restricted. It significantly deteriorates the mechanical properties. Based on the comprehensive analysis, the suitable solution time and cooling method are about 60 min and water cooling.

Abstract

Hot compression experiments of a Ti55511 titanium alloy are conducted to study the phase transformation characteristics and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior. It is found that the fraction of α phase decreases with increasing the strain rate or deformation amount. Meanwhile, the original lamellar α phases easily transform into the spheroidal and bulk α phases at larger deformation amounts or higher strain rates. Most of α phases disappear and the final microstructures are mainly β phases when the temperature is over 800 °C. The DRX degree rises with raising the deformation amount or decreasing the strain rate. However, the DRX behavior becomes weaken with raising the deformation temperature. α phases are evenly distributed around β phases during hot compressive deformation, which not only restrains the growth of β phases but also promotes the DRX process of β phases. In addition, the geometric DRX takes place within α phases, while the continuous DRX occurs within β phases during the hot compression. Abstract

Staggered spinning is a cost-effective method to manufacture axisymmetric components, especially for the ultrathin cylindrical parts. However, due to the complex material flow behavior during staggered spinning of Ni-based thin-walled cylindrical parts, the accurate control of geometric precision is still a great challenge. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) is developed to investigate the effects of staggered spinning parameters on the dimensional accuracy of a thin-walled Hastelloy C-276 cylindrical part. It is found that the deviations of wall thickness and inner diameter are sensitive to spinning parameters. Based on the results from the finite element analysis, the optimized spinning parameters are obtained for the studied thin-walled cylindrical part, i.e., an appropriate wall thickness reduction range is 30%–40% during the single pass spinning. Meanwhile, the effects of feed ratio on the uniformities of wall thickness and inner diameter are significant, and a suitable feed ratio is 0.8 mm/r. Finally, the industrial three-roller staggered spinning experiments are carried out to verify a fact that the developed FEM, as well as the optimized spinning parameters, can be effectively used for the staggered spinning of thin-walled Hastelloy C-276 cylindrical parts. • Metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX) features of a superalloy with pre-precipitated δ phases are researched. • Softening effects induced by MDRX are sensitive to deformation parameters and pre-precipitated δ phase. • Coarsening of MDRX grains and dissolution of δ phase become weaken with reducing pre-precipitated δ phase. • An improved MDRX kinetic model is developed considering the effects of pre-precipitated δ phases. Abstract

Abstract The influences of solution cooling on the microstructures, mechanical properties and hot corrosion resistance of a nickel-based superalloy are researched. It is found that the mechanical properties and hot corrosion resistance are greatly influenced by the solution cooling methods including furnace-cooling (FC), water-cooling (WC) and air-cooling (AC). For the FC superalloy, large amount of coarse γ′′ (Ni 3 Nb) and γ′ (Ni 3 Al) phases precipitate from the matrix, and δ (Ni 3 Nb) phase preferentially precipitates on grain boundaries. Besides, compared with the WC and AC superalloys, the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and micro-hardness of the FC superalloy are higher, but the elongation to fracture is lower. Additionally, the hot corrosion behavior can be well described by the sulfidation-oxidation model and the alkaline-base melting model. Abstract

Bonner Spheres have been used widely for the measurement of neutron spectra with neutron energies ranged from thermal up to at least 20 MeV . A Bonner Sphere neutron spectrometer (BSS) was developed by extending a Berthold LB 6411 neutron-dose-rate meter. The BSS consists of a 3He thermal-neutron detector with integrated electronics, a set of eight polyethylene spherical shells and two optional lead shells of various sizes. The response matrix of the BSS was calculated with GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulation. The BSS had a calibration uncertainty of ± 8.6% and a detector background rate of (1.57 ± 0.04) × 10-3 s-1. A spectral unfolding code NSUGA was developed. The NSUGA code utilizes genetic algorithms and has been shown to perform well in the absence of a priori information. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

396. Morphological evolution and dissolution mechanisms of γ′ phase in a novel HIPed P/M superalloy in hot deformation process.

Abstract

Isothermal compressive tests of a new hot isostatic pressed (HIPed) powder metallurgy (P/M) superalloy are performed at diverse deformation amounts, strain rates, and elevated temperatures. The impacts of hot compression parameters on the morphological evolution and dissolution behavior of γ' phase are studied. Results show that the morphology of γ′ phase changes from the various initial shapes (irregular, split-off branch, dendrite, butterfly-like, and cauliflower) to spherical, due to the overlap of the γ'/γ interface energy and the coherent strain energy related to lattice misfit. Besides, the dislocation accumulation leads to the increased local stress and enhances the spheroidization behavior of γ' phase. Increasing temperature/true strain or decreasing strain rate, the dynamic dissolution behavior of γ' phase is obvious. It is because the dislocation/ vacancies-assisted element diffusion is rapid at high deformation temperatures/true strains, and the low strain rate can provide the enough time for element diffusion. The substantial dissolution of γ' phase at 1140 °C and 1170 °C is also related to the deformation temperature approaching and exceeding the γ' solvus temperature (1150 °C), respectively. Additionally, the decreased fraction of γ' phase is also related to the high γ'/γ interfacial energy. To quantitatively describe the dissolution behavior of γ′ phase, a dynamic dissolution kinetics model is proposed, and the correlation coefficient between the predicted and experimental values is 0.990. It indicates that the proposed model can precisely depict the dissolution behavior of γ′ phase.
