The purpose of this study was to evaluate the chemical bonds of a self-etch 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) adhesive to natural noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and compare them with those occurring in sclerotic dentin in artificially prepared defects (APDs). Four human teeth with natural NCCLs on the buccal surface were selected. Artificial defects matching the natural lesions were prepared on the lingual surface of the same teeth serving as control. Micro-Raman (MR) spectroscopy was used to quantify mineral content in natural NCCLs and in APDs. Fourier transform infrared-photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS) readouts were taken before and after adhesive application to analyze the protein matrix/mineral (M:M) ratio and chemical interactions between 10-MDP adhesive and dentin. The MR and FTIR-PAS spectra collected from natural NCCLs demonstrated a larger area of the band (961 cm
-1 , PO4 ) and lower M:M ratio, respectively, characterizing a hypermineralized dentin, compared with APDs. FTIR-PAS demonstrated emergence of a peak (1179 cm-1 , P=O) in spectra after adhesive treatment, demonstrating a more intense chemical interaction in natural NCCLs. The results demonstrated that chemical bonding of 10-MDP adhesive to natural NCCLs is more intense, due to the hypermineralized surface, and suggest that it is unnecessary to remove the hypermineralized layer with burs, as this may decrease the chemical bonding potential of 10-MDP. The aim of this study was to characterize, using metagenomic shotgun DNA sequencing, the intrauterine microbial population and its predicted functional diversity within healthy cows and cows presenting purulent vaginal discharge (PVD). Twenty Holstein dairy cows from a single farm were enrolled in the study at 25 to 35 d postpartum. Purulent vaginal discharge was diagnosed by retrieving and scoring vaginal discharge using the Metricheck device (Simcro, Hamilton, New Zealand). Intrauterine samples for metagenomic analysis were collected by the cytobrush technique from 8 cows diagnosed with PVD and 12 healthy cows. Pair-end sequencing was performed using the Illumina MiSeq platform (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA). Metagenomic sequences were analyzed using the MG-RAST server (metagenomic rapid annotations using subsystems technology; http://metagenomics.anl. gov/), and the STAMP software (http://kiwi.cs.dal. ca/Software/STAMP) was used to study statistically significant differential abundance of taxonomic and functional features between the 2 metagenomes. Additionally, the total number of bacterial 16S rDNA copies was estimated by real-time PCR. Taxonomic analysis revealed that Bacteroidetes was the most abundant phylum in the uterine microbiota from cows with PVD, and Fusobacteria was almost completely absent in the healthy uterine microbiota. Moreover, species belonging to the genus Trueperella were present only in the uterine microbiota of PVD cows. The increased abundance of Fusobacteria and the unique presence of Trueperella in the PVD cows highlight the important role of these bacteria in the pathogenesis of PVD. Genes encoding cytolethal distending toxin were exclusive to the microbiota of PVD cows. Similarly, genes associated with lipid A modification were present only in samples from PVD cows; such modification is associated with greater resistance to cationic antimicrobial peptides. Conversely, genes encoding bacteriocins and ribosomally antibacterial peptide were exclusively found in the healthy uterine microbiota and dominated by tolerance to colicin E2. No difference was observed in total bacterial load between the 2 microbiotas. This study provides deep insight into the uterine microbial community in health and disease. The observations that the healthy microbiota is tolerant to colicin E2, whereas the uterine microbiota of PVD cows produces cytolethal distending toxins and modifies its lipopolysaccharides suggest that species-intrinsic factors may be more relevant than bacterial abundance to the development of disease or maintenance of health in the dairy cow postpartum uterus. Numerous studies have evaluated associations between bacterial groups and milk quality parameters. However, to our knowledge, no research has been published that has analyzed associations between the microbiome and quality parameters of bulk tank milk (BTM). Thus, the aims of this study were to identify the core microbiome of BTM and to examine associations between the microbiome and milk quality parameters. Four hundred seventy-two BTM samples from 19 different dairy farms located in New York State were analyzed by nextgeneration sequencing and quantitative PCR of the 16S rRNA gene to assess the milk microbiome and measure total bacterial load, respectively. Flow cytometry was used to determine bacterial and somatic cell counts. Heatmaps were constructed and simple linear regressions and response screening analysis were performed. To facilitate data analysis and interpretation of the results, we dichotomized the BTM samples into high (HSCC, >200,000) and low somatic cell count (LSCC, ≤200,000) and into high (HSPC, >3.6) and low log10 SPC (LSPC, ≤3.6). Spoilage-causing, spore-forming, and pathogenic bacteria of importance to the dairy industry were identified in the core microbiome. In addition, the taxa Thermoanaerobacterium and 5-7N15 were identified in the core microbiome; to our knowledge, these genera have not been previously identified in milk samples. Several bacterial genera were encountered in significantly higher relative abundances in the HSCC group when compared with the LSCC group, including Corynebacterium, Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, Coxiella, Arthrobacter, and Lactococcus. Additionally, several bacterial taxa were found in significantly higher relative abundances in the HSPC groups versus the LSPC groups: Acinetobacter, Enterobacteriaceae, Corynebacterium, and Streptococcus. In addition, Streptococcus was highly correlated with HSPC, and this genus was the second most abundant bacterial taxon detected in samples classified as HSCC. Bacterial diversity (Shannon index) was negatively correlated with bacterial load, suggesting that the microbiomes of high-bacterial load BTM samples are dominated by smaller groups of bacterial taxa. In conclusion, the associations described corroborated current knowledge about pathogens and spoilage bacteria in relationship to milk quality, and also indicated that other bacterial taxa should be a focus of further investigations. SUBMARINE volcanoes , *BACK-arc basins , *OBSIDIAN - Abstract
The Nifonea submarine volcano rises 1000m above the seafloor of the Vate Trough back-arc basin behind the New Hebrides island arc. This large volcanic edifice has a caldera of ~8kmdiameter and is connected to two ~20km long volcanic rift zones in the back-arc basin. We present new chemical and isotope data for volcanic glasses and whole-rocks from both the volcano and its rift zones. Lavas from Nifonea volcano show an evolution towards more incompatible element enrichment, with the most enriched lavas being the youngest eruption products on the caldera floor. These are products of significant fractional crystallization, show minor contamination by hydrothermal fluids (<0·3%) and reflect mixing of melts derived from depleted upper mantle and melts from an enriched source similar to those occurring in the North Fiji Basin. The enrichment in Nb of these lavas is comparable with that of some lavas from the New Hebrides island arc (e.g. Mota Lava island), where these coexist with typical island arc basalts. The lavas erupted along the rift zones in the Vate Trough back-arc basin are relatively depleted in incompatible elements, indicating melting of depleted upper mantle with a minor addition of a sediment-derived fluid. Our observations suggest that the mantle beneath Vate Trough is heterogeneous on a small scale (<20km) and that the occurrence of these enriched and fertile mantle portions has a stronger control on melting processes than the influx from the subducting slab, as all samples were recovered at a similar distance from the trench. - Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the teacher activity in the context of the educational specifics, considering the proposal of special education in the inclusive perspective, specifically, the process of teaching and learning mathematics, held in common classrooms. Considering the qualitative approach and giving voice to the teacher, we enter the school environment by means of policies to education for people with special educational needs, but also consider the actions that take place through the teaching practice. The analysis reveals that inclusive education policy was effective, especially in ensuring access of students, however, considering the mathematics teaching-learning process their actions prove to be insufficient; both in basic education and in higher education. Reality which requires policies that make possible the joint between education professionals, pedagogical spaces and society, and unlike an exclusionary process that accentuates and condemns the error, propitiates the context in which the teaching activity can advance possibilities, providing at all, the right of belonging to the school community as well as society. Bird collisions with vehicles cause serious safety, financial and conservation concerns worldwide, but the causes of such collisions are poorly described. We investigated how experience with vehicles influenced avian avoidance responses. We trained three groups of vehicle-naïve rock pigeons Columba livia with 32 near-miss vehicle approaches over 4 weeks at 60 and 120 km h
−1 , and also included individuals that heard but did not see the approaches (control group). We subsequently measured flight initiation distance ( FID) and whether individuals 'collided' with a virtual vehicle directly approaching at 120 or 240 km h−1 using video playback. We found that inexperienced individuals (i.e. the control group) had longer FIDs than experienced birds, although only one of 90 individuals across groups successfully avoided virtual collision. Vehicle approach speed during video playback and the interaction of approach speed and training group did not influence FID. Our results suggest that a habituation-like effect based on repeated observations of passing vehicles could contribute to ineffective vehicle avoidance responses by birds when collisions are imminent. Novel strategies should be developed to enhance avoidance responses to high-speed vehicles to minimize bird mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Liver samples of Oreochromis niloticus cultivated in floating net cages were fixed for histological and ultrastructural studies with the objective of describing the hepatic parenchymal structure and the intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue. Anatomically, the liver showed only two hepatic lobes. Histological analysis demonstrated that the hepatocytes were spread out as anastomotic cords, arranged in two cellular layers and surrounded by sinusoids. The intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue exhibited an acinar arrangement and was diffused in the hepatic parenchyma. Structural analysis showed that the hepatocytes had a rounded nucleus and a rough endoplasmic reticulum with a parallel disposition to the nuclear membrane. The exocrine pancreatic cells showed secretion granules at the apical portion and the rough endoplasmic reticulum was concentrically distributed

LACTOCOCCUS lactis , *BOVINE mastitis , *RECOMBINANT DNA , *CATTLE disease prevention , *FOOD safety - Abstract
The bacterium Lactococcus lactis is widely used in food production and in medical applications, and is considered safe for human and animal use. However, studies have also linked Lactococcus bacteria to infection. For example, certain variants of Lactococcus species have been associated with bovine mastitis (e.g., Lactococcus lactis and Lactococcus garvieae). In this study, we investigated an outbreak of bovine mastitis thought to be associated with Lactococcus bacteria by using microbiological and molecular techniques. We used bacterial isolation, next-generation sequencing, DNA fingerprinting, and other methods to test our hypothesis that Lactococcus microbes were the primary pathogen causing the mastitis outbreak. Twenty-eight Lactococcus isolates were obtained from mastitic milk of 28 dairy cows. The isolates were identified as L. lactis (27 isolates) and L. garvieae (1 isolate). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA gene sequence comparison indicated similarity among the L. lactis isolates as well as between the isolates and reference sequences. The DNA fingerprinting analysis based on random amplified polymorphic DNA results of the 27 L. lactis isolates identified different random amplified polymorphic DNA profiles, which suggests they originated from multiple sources. Microbiome analysis determined Lactococcus to be the dominant genus in the majority of the mastitic milk samples, whereas it was found in low relative abundance in healthy milk samples. The Lactococcus genus was detected in all environmental samples tested, and sampling of bulk tank milk corroborated that Lactococcus was not abundant in healthy milk from the same dairy herd. In summary, our findings suggest that Lactococcus bacteria are a potential etiological agent in the mastitis outbreak studied. Further studies should be conducted to understand the importance of Lactococcus, especially L. lactis, as pathogenic microbes in veterinary medicine and food safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study was conducted to detect enterobacteria in captive Grey-breasted parakeet from a commercial breeding located in the state of Ceara. 25 individual cloacal swabs were collected and this material was subjected to microbiological processing to obtain the bacterial isolation, identification, and evaluation of the sensitivity profile to antimicrobials. The bacterial isolation in ten samples was determined, belonging to the genera Enterobacter, Hafnia, Serratia, Escherichia, Pantoea and Klebsiella, in which these last three corresponded to the bacteria most isolated, with respective percentages of 28.6%, 21.4%, and 21.4%. As for the sensitivity profile, antibiotics to which the bacteria showed more resistance were trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (57%), tetracycline (21%), and azithromycin (43%). Thus, it was shown that the parakeets were carriers of Enterobacteriaceae with resistance characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Made available in DSpace on 2018-03-28T00:30:51Z (GMT). - Abstract
In the present work, we explored multiple data from different biological levels such as cuticular hydrocarbons, chromosomal features, and mtDNA sequences in the Neotropical social wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis(J.F. Zikán). Particularly, we explored the genetic and chemical differentiation level within and between populations of this insect. Our dataset revealed shallow intraspecific differentiation in M. consimilis. The similarity among the analyzed samples can probably be due to the geographical proximity where the colonies were sampled, and we argue that Paraná River did not contribute effectively as a historical barrier to this wasp.

Introduction: Women continue to be underrepresented in the majority of surgical specialties, including neurosurgery. Research question: In this multinational survey, we aimed to assess current gender disparities in neurosurgery focusing on job satisfaction and inequity/discrimination at work. Material and methods: Female and male members of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies were asked to complete an electronic survey (Google Forms, Mountain View) containing demographic baseline data and questions on attitudes regarding gender disparity, personal experience with gender inequity and career satisfaction/work-life balance. Quantitative analyses were performed to analyse the responses, including summary and comparative statistics. Results: We received 168 responses from 40 different countries. Survey responders had a mean age of 40.8 ± 11.5 years; 29.8% were female. There were significant more male than female residents and attending surgeons per department. Eighty-eight percent of female and 38.1% of male responders experienced gender inequity or discrimination at work (adjusted OR 10.8, 95%CI 4.2–27.8, p

A release of radioactive material into the environment can lead to hazardous exposure of the population and serious future concerns about health issues such as an increased incidence of cancer. In this context, a practical methodology capable of providing useful basic information from the scenario can be valuable for immediate decisions and future risk assessment. For this work, the simulation of a radiological dispersal device (RDD) filled with americium-241 was considered. The radiation dose simulated by the HotSpot code was used as an input to the epidemiological equations from BEIR V producing the data used to assess the risk of lung cancer development. The methodology could be useful in providing training for responders aimed to the initial support addressed to decision-making for emergency response at the early phase of an RDD scenario. The results from the simulation allow estimating (a) the size of the potentially affected population, (b) the type of protection action considering gender and location of the individuals, (c) the absorbed doses, (d) the matrix of lung cancer incidence predictions over a period of 5 years, and (e) the cost-effectiveness in the initial decision environment.

Participants who did not drink cola-based soft drinks were assigned to the control group (CG), while participants who drank a cola-based soft drink at least twice a day were assigned to the experimental group (EG). For the CG, foods with staining dyes were restricted. For the EG, there was no restriction on food and patients were asked to rinse their mouths with a cola-based soft drink for 30 s, 4 times daily. For both groups, 2 sessions with three 15 min applications of 35% HP were performed. Shade evaluation was assessed via subjective (VITA classical and VITA bleacheguide shade guides) and objective methods (Easyshade spectrophotometer) at baseline, during bleaching (first, second, and third weeks), and post bleaching (1 week and 1 month). Patients recorded their sensitivity perceptions using a numerical rating scale and 0–10 visual analog scales. Variation in shade guide units and the 2 colors (DE) were evaluated with a Student’s t-test (α = 0.05) and Mann–Whitney test (α = 0.05). Absolute risk of tooth sensitivity and intensity of tooth sensitivity were evaluated by a Chi-square test (α=0.05).Results: Effective bleaching was observed for both groups after 30 days, without statistical difference (p > 0.08). There was no significant difference in absolute risk of bleaching-induced tooth sensitivity between the 2 groups (p = 0.74). Higher and significant scores in pain scales were detected for the EG in comparison to the CG (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Even that the cola-based soft drink exposure during in-office bleaching treatments did not affect the bleaching’s effectiveness; patients reported a higher intensity in bleaching-induced tooth sensitivity. Keywords: dentin sensitivity, dental bleaching, hydrogen peroxide, cola-based soft drink, carbonated beverages, cola, soda

The use of medicinal plants has strongly increased by the world population. The objetive of this study is to assess the effects of the aqueous extract of Hyptis pectinata leaves, popularly known as "sambacaitá" or "canudinho", on liver regeneration after 70% partial hepatectomy. Twenty four rats were divided into 4 groups: group OS, submitted to sham operation and oral administration of distilled water during 4 days; group OSD200, also submitted to sham operation and ingestion of 200 mg of extract/Kg of animal for the same period of time; group HP, which underwent 70% hepatectomy after 4 days of distilled water administration; and group HPD200, which underwent 70% hepatectomy after 4 days of oral administration of 200 mg of extract/Kg of animal. Alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin and the serum level of aminotransferases were measured and state III of mitochondrial respiratory activity was assessed. Group OSD200, when compared to OS, presented significant decrease of alcaline fosfatase. Group HPD200, when compared to HP, showed statistically significant decrease of AST level and state III respiratory process.

- Abstract
Wolbachia are vertically transmitted endosymbiotic bacteria of arthropods and onchocercid nematodes. It is commonly accepted that they co-evolved with their filarial hosts, and have secondarily been lost in some species. However, most of the data on the Wolbachia/Onchocercidae relationship have been derived from studies on two subfamilies, the Dirofilariinae and the Onchocercinae, which harbour parasites of humans and domestic animals. Within the last few years, analyses of more diverse material have suggested that some groups of Onchocercidae do not have Wolbachia, such as recently studied Splendidofilariinae from birds. This study takes advantage of the analysis of additional Splendidofilariinae, Rumenfilaria andersoni from a Finnish reindeer and Madathamugadia hiepei from a South African gecko, using PCR, immunohistochemical staining and whole-mount fluorescent analysis to detect Wolbachia and describe its strains. A DNA barcoding approach and phylogenetic analyses were used to investigate the symbiosis between Wolbachia and the Onchocercidae. A new supergroup F Wolbachia was demonstrated in M. hiepei, representing the first filarial nematode harbouring Wolbachia described in a non-mammalian host. In the adult, Wolbachia infects the female germline but not the hypodermis, and intestinal cells are also infected. The phylogenetic analyses confirmed a recent emergence of supergroup F. They also suggested several events of horizontal transmission between nematodes and arthropods in this supergroup, and the existence of different metabolic interactions between the filarial nematodes and their symbionts.

- Abstract
Background: Wolbachia are intriguing symbiotic endobacteria with a peculiar host range that includes arthropods and a single nematode family, the Onchocercidae encompassing agents of filariases. This raises the question of the origin of infection in filariae. Wolbachia infect the female germline and the hypodermis. Some evidences lead to the theory that Wolbachia act as mutualist and coevolved with filariae from one infection event: their removal sterilizes female filariae; all the specimens of a positive species are infected; Wolbachia are vertically inherited; a few species lost the symbiont. However, most data on Wolbachia and filaria relationships derive from studies on few species of Onchocercinae and Dirofilariinae, from mammals. Methodology/Principal Findings: We investigated the Wolbachia distribution testing 35 filarial species, including 28 species and 7 genera and/or subgenera newly screened, using PCR, immunohistochemical staining, whole mount fluorescent analysis, and cocladogenesis analysis. (i) Among the newly screened Onchocercinae from mammals eight species harbour Wolbachia but for some of them, bacteria are absent in the hypodermis, or in variable density. (ii) Wolbachia are not detected in the pathological model Monanema martini and in 8, upon 9, species of Cercopithifilaria. (iii) Supergroup F Wolbachia is identified in two newly screened Mansonella species and in Cercopithifilaria japonica. (iv) Type F Wolbachia infect the intestinal cells and somatic female genital tract. (v) Among Oswaldofilariinae, Waltonellinae and Splendidofilariinae, from saurian, anuran and bird respectively, Wolbachia are not detected. Conclusions/Significance: The absence of Wolbachia in 63% of onchocercids, notably in the ancestral Oswaldofilariinae estimated 140 mya old, the diverse tissues or specimens distribution, and a recent lateral transfer in supergroup F Wolbachia, modify the current view on the role and evolution of the endosymbiont and their hosts. For the 1493 animals involved in this experiment (657 males and 836 females) biometrical data were obtained (weight, length and tympanum diameter) and developmental stages of gonads were determined. Female sizes at first maturation were 10,33 cm and 109,78 g and for males it was around 8,09 cm; all males above 45 g were already in the maturation process. The relationship between tympanum diameter and body length (RTC) was considered a good index for male maturation. UNESP, Botucatu, SP, Brazil UNESP, Botucatu, SP, Brazil
