The purpose of this study was to explore significant variables predicting adolescent suicidal attempts. Socio-environmental variables such as gender, school record, school grade, school adaptation, and family intimacy together with intra-individual variables including depression, anxiety, delinquency, stress, and self-esteem were considered as candidates. Data from 1481 adolescents were collected from Korea National Youth Policy Institute. For statistical analyses, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was performed. Results of hierarchical logistic regression analysis showed that gender, school grade, depression, delinquent, stress, and family intimacy were significant predictors of suicidal attempts of adolescents. Among those, the most powerful predictor was depression, and the second was delinquency. Classification accuracy by the model of our study was 87.6%. Implications and limitations of present study and suggestions for future study were discussed.

Background: Bladder cancer (BLCA) research in Koreans is still lacking, especially in focusing on the prediction of BLCA. The current study aimed to discover metabolic signatures related to BLCA onset and confirm its potential as a biomarker. Methods: We designed two nested case-control studies using Korean Cancer Prevention Study (KCPS)-II. Only males aged 35–69 were randomly selected and divided into two sets by recruitment organizations [set 1, BLCA (n = 35) vs. control (n = 35); set 2, BLCA (n = 31) vs. control (n = 31)]. Baseline serum samples were analyzed by non-targeted metabolomics profiling, and OPLS-DA and network analysis were performed. Calculated genetic risk score (GRS) for BLCA from all KCPS participants was utilized for interpreting metabolomics data. Results: Critical metabolic signatures shown in the BLCA group were dysregulation of lysine metabolism and tryptophan-indole metabolism. Furthermore, the prediction model consisting of metabolites (lysine, tryptophan, indole, indoleacrylic acid, and indoleacetaldehyde) reflecting these metabolic signatures showed mighty BLCA predictive power (AUC: 0.959 [0.929–0.989]). The results of metabolic differences between GRS-high and GRS-low groups in BLCA indicated that the pathogenesis of BLCA is associated with a genetic predisposition. Besides, the predictive ability for BLCA on the model using GRS and five significant metabolites was powerful (AUC: 0.990 [0.980–1.000]). Conclusion: Metabolic signatures shown in the present research may be closely associated with BLCA pathogenesis. Metabolites involved in these could be predictive biomarkers for BLCA. It could be utilized for early diagnosis, prognostic diagnosis, and therapeutic targets for BLCA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• We explored Korean educators' challenges with the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum. • Teachers reported pedagogical difficulties in implementing the play-based approach. • Teachers noted difficulties in not understanding their role in the play. • There was misalignment between theory and teachers' beliefs about play and learning. Motivated by an increasingly globalized and technological world, countries around the world are rewriting their education policies in favor of play-based learning. South Korea, a country that recently reformed its early childhood curriculum to reflect an emphasis on a whole-child, active play pedagogy, is an important case of how child- and play-centered curriculum may translate into implementable practices. This study surveyed 182 Korean early childhood educators to explore their difficulties in implementing the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum. It investigated how these teachers conceptualize play from a science of learning perspective. Understanding their role in play and how play can elicit learning were reported as specific challenges. The study reports a misalignment between teachers' belief that free play is most beneficial for learning and findings from the scientific literature supporting guided play as most effective for achieving a learning goal. The potential of further Nuri Curriculum revisions reflective of the science of learning paired with continuous professional development for Korean teachers is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies have revealed that colistin dependence frequently develops in colistin-susceptible Acinetobacter baumannii isolates. Despite resistance in parental strains, colistin-dependent mutants showed increased susceptibility to several antibiotics, which suggests the possibility of developing strategies to eliminate multidrug-resistant (MDR) A. baumannii. We investigated in vitro and in vivo efficacy of combinations of colistin and other antibiotics using MDR A. baumannii strains H08-391, H06-855, and H09-94, which are colistin-susceptible but develops colistin dependence upon exposure to colistin. An in vitro time-killing assay, a checkerboard assay, and an antibiotic treatment assay using Galleria mellonella larvae were performed. Although a single treatment of colistin at a high concentration did not prevent colistin dependence, combinations of colistin with other antibiotics at subinhibitory concentrations, especially amikacin, eradicated the strains by inhibiting the development of colistin dependence, in the in vitro time-killing assay. Only 40% of G. mellonella larvae infected by A. baumannii survived with colistin treatment alone; however, all or most of them survived following treatment with the combination of colistin and other antibiotics (amikacin, ceftriaxone, and tetracycline). Our results suggest the possibility of the combination of colistin and amikacin or other antibiotics as one of therapeutic options against A. baumannii infections by eliminating colistin-dependent mutants.
