Thyroid diseases, including neoplasms, autoimmune diseases and thyroid dysfunctions, are becoming a serious social problem with rapidly increasing prevalence. The latter is increasingly linked to oxidative stress. There are many methods for determining the biomarkers of oxidative stress, making it possible to evaluate the oxidative profile in patients with thyroid diseases compared to the healthy population. This opens up a new perspective for investigating the role of elevated parameters of oxidative stress and damage in people with thyroid diseases, especially of neoplastic nature. An imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants is observed at different stages and in different types of thyroid diseases. The organ, which is part of the endocrine system, uses free radicals (reactive oxygen species, ROS) to produce hormones. Thyroid cells release enzymes that catalyse ROS generation; therefore, a key role is played by the internal defence system and non-enzymatic antioxidants that counteract excess ROS not utilised to produce thyroid hormones, acting as a buffer to neutralise free radicals and ensure whole-body homeostasis. An excess of free radicals causes structural cell damage, undermining genomic stability. Looking at the negative effects of ROS accumulation, oxidative stress appears to be implicated in both the initiation and progression of carcinogenesis. The aim of this review is to investigate the oxidation background of thyroid diseases and to summarise the links between redox imbalance and thyroid dysfunction and disease.

Nowadays, products of natural origin with health-promoting properties are increasingly more common. Research shows that fruit vinegars can be a source of compounds with antioxidant activity. Research on the total antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, and antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans of grape vinegars were conducted. Moreover, gas chromatography was used to measure acetic acid content in the vinegars. The research material consisted of vinegars produced from five different grape varieties. For each variety, two variants were prepared: with and without the addition of sugar in the fermentation process. The highest antimicrobial activity against all micro-organisms was observed in vinegar produced from Solaris grapes with added sugar. The highest polyphenol content was observed in vinegar produced from the Prior grape variety with added sugar and the highest total antioxidant capacity is the Johanniter grape variety with added sugar. The vinegars examined in this study differed, depending on grape variety, in terms of antimicrobial properties, antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, as well as acetic acid content. Sugar addition caused significant differences in the antioxidant capacity of vinegar samples.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has caused high morbidity and mortality and has been a source of substantial challenges for healthcare systems globally. Despite a full recovery, a significant proportion of patients demonstrate a broad spectrum of cardiovascular, pulmonary and neurological symptoms that are believed to be caused by long-term tissue damage and pathological inflammation, which play a vital role in disease development. Microvascular dysfunction also causes significant health problems. This review aimed to critically appraise the current data on the long-term cardiovascular sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), with a primary focus on cardiovascular symptoms such as chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, and breathlessness, and more significant disease entities including myocarditis, pericarditis and postural tachycardia syndrome. Potential risk factors identified in recent studies that contribute towards the development of long COVID are also included alongside a summary of recent advances in diagnostics and putative treatment options. The outcomes from real-life clinical studies regarding the optimal revascularization strategy in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease (MVD) are still poorly investigated. In this retrospective study we assessed 5-year outcomes: primary, secondary endpoints and quality of life of 1035 individuals with severe coronary artery disease (CAD) treated either with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)—356 patients or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)—679 patients according to the recommendation of a local Heart Team (HT). At 5 years no significant difference in overall mortality and rates of myocardial infarctions (MI) were observed between CABG and PCI cohorts (11.0% vs. 13.4% for PCI, P = 0.27 and 9.6% vs. 12.8% for PCI, P = 0.12, respectively). The incidence of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), mainly driven by increased rates of repeat revascularization (RR) were higher in PCI-cohort than in CABG-group (56.1% vs. 40.4%, P < 0.01 and 26.8% vs. 12.6%, P < 0.01, respectively), while CABG-patients experienced stroke more often (7.3% vs. 3.1% for PCI, P < 0.01). In real-life practice with long-term follow-up, none of the two revascularization modalities implemented following HT decisions showed overwhelming superiority: occurrence of death and MI were similar, rates of RR favoured CABG, while incidence of strokes advocated PCI. The role of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in surgical planning can be assessed based on the correlation among bone density (BD/HU), radiographic values, and the histopathological appearance of hyperplastic overgrowth in mandibular condyles (hemimandibular hyperplasia/osteochondroma). The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between LDCT indices of bone-density measurements in surgical planning and histopathological specimens. The patients incuded in this study underwent detailed radiological evaluation as preparation for further clinical procedures. Excised condyles were evaluated in terms of bone density index using LDCT, and then histopathologically to investigate the accuracy of surgical procedures and set the basis for future surgical planning. An index value between both condyles' bone densities represented the relative difference between the healthy condyle and the side with hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH). Patients with unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) showed a statistical correlation between condyle heads with increased bone density (BD) and scintigraphic (SCI) values (p < 0.001). On the other hand, correlation between BD and histopathological studies alone was significant (p < 0.001). With the increase in BD measured in HU in UCH condyles, the overall value of fibrous cartilage layer thickness decreased (p < 0.001). Furthermore, histopathological evaluation indicated that increased bone density on the UCH side resulted in increased total thickness (p > 0.001). The proposed index measurements in the mandibular condyles based on LDCT/BD can be used to estimate the degree of required surgical resection. Background. The focus on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in medical research is becoming more and more intensive, with attention being paid to the patient's subjective feelings and assessment of one's health status. Smell disorders can significantly impact human life. The Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (QOD) is a self-monitoring questionnaire that provides subjective information about olfactory disorders. Objectives. This study aimed to check the reliability and validation of the Polish version of QOD (QOD-PL) for use in patients with olfactory impairment in Poland. Materials and methods. A total of 158 patients (76 females, mean age (Mage) 45.97 ±16.37 years), suffering from chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), whose olfactory function was measured using the Sniffin' Sticks test (SST), were studied. All patients completed 3 validated questionnaires: Importance of Olfaction (IO), Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) and QOD-PL. Results. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the entire QOD-PL scale were good (Cronbach's a = 0.88). The convergent validity of the QOD-PL and its subscales correlated with IO and SNOT-22. The life quality statements in the QOD-PL (QOD-PL-LQ) score, its negative statements, and the mean score for VAS scales were significantly and positively correlated with all symptoms measured with SNOT-22 and none of the IO scales. Conclusions. The QOD-PL is a reliable, valid and important tool for assessing HRQOL in patients with olfactory disorders. Gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) is associated with a higher risk of noncardia intestinal gastric adenocarcinoma (GA). The aim of this study was to estimate lifetime benefits, complications, and cost-effectiveness of GIM surveillance using esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). We developed a semi-Markov microsimulation model of patients with incidentally detected GIM, to compare the effectiveness of EGD surveillance with no surveillance at 10-year, 5-year, 3-year, 2-year, and 1-year intervals. We modeled a simulated cohort of 1,000,000 US individuals aged 50 with incidental GIM. Outcome measures were lifetime GA incidence, mortality, number of EGDs, complications, undiscounted life-years gained, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio with a willingness-to-pay threshold of $100,000/quality-adjusted life-year (QALY). In the absence of surveillance, the model simulated 32.0 lifetime GA cases and 23.0 lifetime GA deaths per 1000 individuals with GIM, respectively. Among surveilled individuals, simulated lifetime GA incidence (per 1000) decreased with shorter surveillance intervals (10-year to 1-year, 11.2–6.1) as did GA mortality (7.4–3.6). Compared with no surveillance, all modeled surveillance intervals yielded greater life expectancy (87–190 undiscounted life-years gained per 1000); 5-year surveillance provided the greatest number of life-years gained per EGD performed and was the cost-effective strategy ($40,706/QALY). In individuals with risk factors of family history of GA or anatomically extensive, incomplete-type GIM intensified 3-year surveillance was cost-effective (incremental cost-effectiveness ratio $28,156/QALY and $87,020/QALY, respectively). Using microsimulation modeling, surveillance of incidentally detected GIM every 5 years is associated with reduced GA incidence/mortality and is cost-effective from a health care sector perspective. Simple Summary: This study explores the psychosocial impact of pancreatic cancer (PC) surveillance in individuals at high-risk (HRIs) of developing PC. The primary objective was to understand the attitudes and beliefs of HRIs undergoing PC surveillance and assess the immediate and sustained psychosocial effects. By investigating factors such as perceived benefits, self-efficacy, and emotions before and after surveillance, the study aims to shed light on the overall experience of PC surveillance. The findings suggest that PC surveillance can yield lasting psychosocial benefits for HRIs. This insight not only enhances our understanding of the social and psychological aspects of surveillance, but also has implications for how the medical community approaches and supports individuals in high-risk PC surveillance programs. Objectives: Pancreatic cancer (PC) surveillance of high-risk individuals (HRIs) downstages PC and improves survival. However, it remains less clear whether PC surveillance has a positive psychosocial impact on HRIs. Herein, we aimed to define the attitudes and beliefs of HRIs undergoing PC surveillance, and the immediate and sustained psychosocial impact of PC surveillance in HRIs. Methods: 100 HRIs undergoing PC surveillance by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) completed three surveys addressing different components of the psychosocial impact of PC surveillance. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify predictive factors relating to these components. Results: Most HRIs reported increased perceived benefits of PC surveillance, self-efficacy, and perceived severity of PC. HRIs reported few negative emotions prior to surveillance and frequent positive emotions after surveillance. Compared to prior to surveillance, there was a 53.5% decrease in the level of distress reported by HRIs after surveillance, which was sustained for 4–6 weeks post-surveillance. Family history of PC and lower self-reported mental health were identified as predictors for increased perceived susceptibility to PC (p < 0.01) and greater change in distress pre- to post-surveillance (p < 0.01), respectively. Introduction: Patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) require dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). However, the response to treatment can vary considerably. Certain platelet microRNAs (miRs) are suspected to predict DAPT response and influence platelet function. This study aimed to analyze selected miRs' expressions and compare them among patients treated with different P2Y12 inhibitors while assessing their association with platelet activity and turnover parameters. Materials and methods: We recruited 79 ACS patients post-PCI treated with clopidogrel, ticagrelor, or prasugrel, along with 18 healthy volunteers. Expression levels of miR-126-3p, miR223-3p, miR-21-5p, miR-197-3p, and miR-24-3p, as well as immature platelet fraction (IPF) and ADP-induced platelet reactivity, were measured and compared between groups. Results: Analyses revealed significantly lower expressions of miR-126-3p, miR-223-3p, miR-21-5p, and miR-197-3p in patients treated with ticagrelor, compared to clopidogrel (fold changes from −1.43 to −1.27, p-values from 0.028 to 0.048). Positive correlations were observed between platelet function and the expressions of miR-223-3p (r = 0.400, p = 0.019) and miR-21-5p (r = 0.423, p = 0.013) in patients treated with potent drugs. Additionally, miR-24-3p (r = 0.411, p = 0.012) and miR-197-3p (r = 0.333, p = 0.044) showed correlations with IPF. Self-rated health (SRH) is a tool for assessing a population's health across the lifetime, and seems to be a dynamic assessment of current health status and a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease and mortality, whereas insufficient levels of physical fitness in adolescence are a significant health problem and may contribute to the development of many disorders in adulthood. In this cross-sectional study, we attempted to assess the relationship between SRH and the physical fitness of adolescents. Two hundred and thirty-five adolescents (eighty-five boys and one hundred and fifty girls) aged 16–17 were recruited for this study. The study procedures included a short author questionnaire and physical fitness assessment (Zuchora's Physical Fitness Index). Boys declared better health states and reported less frequent morbidity of seasonal diseases (p < 0.05). No differences were found in physical fitness, the incidence of postural disorders, lower limb malalignments, foot deformities, sleep duration, and perception of physical activity on physical condition and well-being in boys and girls (p > 0.05). The comparison of physical fitness levels in adolescents with different SRH, sleep duration, perceptions of physical activity on physical condition and well-being also showed significant differences (p < 0.05). Positive SRH and perception of physical activity on physical condition and well-being, proper sleep duration (7–8 h/night), and a lack of foot deformities are associated with a better physical fitness in adolescents. Physical fitness seems to be a good predictor of SRH only in Polish boys, but not girls and the entire population. The lack of significance in the entire population could be attributed to the substantial number of girls in the study group. Despite that, it is recommended to encourage adolescents to engage in regular exercises, sleep routines and healthy lifestyles. Further research should be based on a more representative group, with a comparable number of girls and boys in the study group and potential confounders, but also they should be focused on SRH predictors to improve SRH in Polish girls.
