A case of post-traumatic hypothalamic hypothermia is described. An unusually selective defect in thermoregulatory function was demonstrated together with a defect in thyroid function suggestive of impaired hypothalamic control.

Summary: Platelet counts were performed on 1,020 normal patients at different stages of pregnancy. Patients with complications of pregnancy known to influence the platelet count were excluded from the study. There was no evidence of any significant change in platelet count during pregnancy.

The following commentary is a reconstructive criticism1 written from the perspective of two liberals2 concerned about the future of "legal liberalism." We present our views as a commentary to emphasize their preliminary character; they represent our current assessment of where liberals stand and where they might redirect their energies. In 1985, state courts of last resort issued more decisions than in any year since 1950 in which they extended rights protections to individuals beyond those recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court by basing rights protections solely or independently upon state constitutional grounds. A survey of state high court judges and justices reported here indicates that there has been a nationwide increase in the number of individual rights cases litigated under state constitutions since 1980. Significant-to-moderate increases, however, were more likely to be reported by justices from the Northeast and West, from states having a moralistic political culture, andfrom courts whose members are appointed by the governor and/or legislature. State constitutional rights claims are more likely to be raised in criminal than noncriminal cases, though in both types of cases and in most states, state constitutional rights claims are raised less frequently than federal constitutional rights claims. Majorities of judges and justices favor the ideas of teaching state constitutional law in law schools and of testing for knowledge of state constitutional law on bar examinations.

In a previous study of acute experimental cocaine poisoning and its treatment 1 we reported the following observations from experiments on the dog and the rabbit: Death in acute poisoning from the hypodermic injection of cocaine hydrochloride is due to respiratory failure. By the intravenous administration of appropriate hypnotics, e. g., barbital sodium (barbitalum soluble, U. S. P. X) with paraldehyde, the minimal lethal dosage of cocaine was raised from approximately 100 mg. per kilogram to 150 mg. per kilogram in the rabbit, and from approximately 26 mg. per kilogram to 65 mg. per kilogram in the dog. Convulsions ceased immediately during the injection of the hypnotics. The convulsions caused by cocaine are largely of cortical origin; this disturbance contributes or is parallel to the more direct drug injury of the medullary centers, particularly the respiratory center. Acute cocain poisoning, with its all too frequent disastrous sequelae, requires for its treatment the development of a closer understanding of the site and mode of action of this drug. In laboratory animals as well as in man, respiratory failure invariably precedes cardiac failure in cocain poisoning. Respiratory failure requires artificial respiration. In the past, artificial respiration, though resorted to both clinically and experimentally, has not been very successful. In the rabbit, however, we have been able by artificial respiration alone to raise the lethal subcutaneous dosage from approximately 100 mg. per kilogram of body weight, the usual fatal dose, to from 300 to 350 mg. per kilogram, with return of efficient respiratory center function. In the dog, on the other hand, artificial respiration alone was, in our experience, an inadequate procedure, since we were unable to raise the lethal dosage by this means. Formalin has been the most widely used inactivating agent in the production of Newcastle disease virus vaccines. Many investigators (1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 22, 23) have reported generally good results with formalin-inactivated preparations of Newcastle disease virus (NDV). Others (5, 12, 15, 20) have reported poor or partial immunity following its use. Brandly et al. (4) and Hanson et al. (11) found some differences in immunogenicity between strains of virus when inactivated with formalin and used as vaccines. Beta-propiolactone has come into use recently as a promising inactivating agent in preparing NDV vaccines (16, 21). Bower and Eisenstark (3) reported preliminary results with urethane used as the inactivating chemical. Iyer and Dobson (14) and Doyle and Wright (9) reported on the use of crystal violet NDV vaccine. Dutcher et al. (10) used rapid heating as a means of inactivating NDV for vaccines. This report presents the results of experiments designed to evaluate the immunogenicity of NDV preparations inactivated by gamma radiation, formalin, and beta-propiolactone (BPL).
