Sucrose is commonly used for sweetening berry products. During processing and storage of berry products containing added sucrose, sucrose is inverted to glucose and fructose. We have previously shown that postprandial glycaemic response induced by intact sucrose is attenuated when sucrose is consumed with berries rich in polyphenols. It is not known how inversion of sucrose affects glycaemic response. We investigated postprandial glycaemic and insulinaemic responses to blackcurrant ( Ribes nigrum ) and lingonberry ( Vaccinium vitis-idaea ) nectars and a reference drink (water) sweetened with glucose and fructose, representing completely inverted sucrose. The nectars and reference drink (300 ml) contained 17·5 g glucose and 17·5 g fructose. Polyphenol composition of the nectars was analysed. A total of eighteen healthy volunteers participated in a randomised, controlled, cross-over study. Blood samples were collected at fasting and six times postprandially during 120 min. Inverted sucrose in the reference drink induced glycaemic and insulinaemic responses similar to those previously observed for intact sucrose. In comparison with the reference, the blackcurrant nectar attenuated the early glycaemic response and improved glycaemic profile, and the lingonberry nectar reduced the insulinaemic response. The responses induced by inverted sucrose in the berry nectars are similar to those previously observed for berry nectars containing intact sucrose, suggesting that inversion has no major impact on glycaemic response to sucrose-sweetened berry products. The attenuated glycaemic response after the blackcurrant nectar may be explained by inhibition of intestinal absorption of glucose by blackcurrant anthocyanins.

Previous studies suggest that consumption of chokeberries may improve cardiovascular disease risk factor profiles. We hypothesized that chokeberries (Aronia mitschurinii) have beneficial effects on blood pressure, low-grade inflammation, serum lipids, serum glucose, and platelet aggregation in patients with untreated mild hypertension. A total of 38 participants were enrolled into a 16-week single blinded crossover trial. The participants were randomized to use cold-pressed 100% chokeberry juice (300 mL/d) and oven-dried chokeberry powder (3 g/d), or matched placebo products in random order for 8 weeks each with no washout period. The daily portion of chokeberry products was prepared from approximately 336 g of fresh chokeberries. Urinary excretion of various polyphenols and their metabolites increased during the chokeberry period, indicating good compliance. Chokeberries decreased daytime blood pressure and low-grade inflammation. The daytime ambulatory diastolic blood pressure decreased (-1.64 mm Hg, P = .02), and the true awake ambulatory systolic (-2.71 mm Hg, P = .077) and diastolic (-1.62 mm Hg, P = .057) blood pressure tended to decrease. The concentrations of interleukin (IL) 10 and tumor necrosis factor α decreased (-1.9 pg/mL [P = .008] and -0.67 pg/mL [P = .007], respectively) and tended to decrease for IL-4 and IL-5 (-4.5 pg/mL [P = .084] and -0.06 pg/mL [P = .059], respectively). No changes in serum lipids, lipoproteins, glucose, and in vitro platelet aggregation were noted with the chokeberry intervention. These findings suggest that inclusion of chokeberry products in the diet of participants with mildly elevated blood pressure has minor beneficial effects on cardiovascular health., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. This study provides information on the variation of anthocyanin and flavonol contents and composition in 32 black and 12 redcurrant varieties, as well as flavonol contents and composition in two green-fruited blackcurrant (green currant) and one white currant varieties conserved in a national ex situ germplasm field collection in Finland, North Europe. Flavonols were analysed as aglycones and anthocyanins as authentic compounds using HPLC methods. In blackcurrants, total anthocyanin content varied 1260-2878mg/100g dry weight and total flavonol content 43.6-89.9mg/100g dry weight. In redcurrants, the content of anthocyanins and flavonols varied 138-462mg/100g dry weight and from not detectable to 17.7mg/100g dry weight, respectively. The green currants contained flavonols 26.1 and 15.4mg/100g dry weight, while in the white variety no flavonols were detected. A positive correlation was found between the total content of anthocyanins and flavonols in both black and redcurrants. Berry size was negatively related to the flavonoid content in redcurrants but not in blackcurrants. Antenatal anxiety symptoms are not only a health problem for the expectant mother. Research has found that maternal anxiety may also have an impact on the developing baby. Therefore, it is important to estimate the prevalence of maternal anxiety and associated factors. The current study aims to estimate the prevalence of anxiety symptoms during the first trimester of pregnancy and to identify associated risk factors. Secondly, to investigate other factors associated with anxiety during early pregnancy including fear of childbirth and a preference for cesarean section. In a population-based community sample of 1,175 pregnant women, 916 women (78%) were investigated in the first trimester (gestation week 8-12). The Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS-A) was used to measure anxiety symptoms. The prevalence of anxiety symptoms (HADS-A scores≥8 during pregnancy) was 15.6% in early pregnancy. Women under 25 years of age were at an increased risk of anxiety symptoms during early pregnancy (OR 2.6, CI 1.7-4.0). Women who reported a language other than Swedish as their native language (OR 4.2, CI 2.7-7.0), reported high school as their highest level of education (OR 1.6, CI 1.1-2.3), were unemployed (OR 3.5, CI 2.1-5.8), used nicotine before pregnancy (OR 1.7, CI 1.1-2.5), and had a self-reported psychiatric history of either depression (OR 3.8, CI 2.6-5.6) or anxiety (OR 5.2, CI 3.5-7.9) before their current pregnancy were all at an increased risk of anxiety symptoms during early pregnancy. Anxiety symptoms during pregnancy increased the rate of fear of birth (OR 3.0, CI 1.9-4.7) and a preference for cesarean section (OR 1.7, CI 1.0-2.8). Caregivers should pay careful attention to history of mental illness to be able to identify women with symptoms of anxiety during early pregnancy. When presenting with symptoms of anxiety, the women might need counseling and or treatment in order to decrease her anxiety.

Objective: Therapeutic hypothermia in the ICU requires mechanical ventilation and sedation. Hypothermia reduces the metabolism of commonly used IV sedatives. The use of long-acting sedative agents may confound neurologic assessment. Volatile anesthetics have been reported to provide protection against ischemia-reperfusion injury and have been safely used in the ICU to provide sedation in trials with shorter wake-up times. There are no clinical studies in this setting. We describe a case series and discuss potential benefits., Design: Retrospective study., Settings: Ten-bed ICU, university hospital., Patients: Twelve patients resuscitated from cardiac arrest with Glasgow Coma Scale score less than or equal to 4., Intervention: Isoflurane sedation with the AnaConDa during 24 hours therapeutic hypothermia, until rewarming., Measurements and Main Results: Data were extracted from the computerized ICU chart/monitors, hospital and prehospital charts, and the national death index. Patients were 49-76 years old. Median return of spontaneous circulation was 14 minutes. Glasgow Coma Scale scores were assessed within 24 hours from reaching normal body temperature and compared with outcomes at 6 months: six patients had poor Glasgow Coma Scale scores (< 8) that remained low and all died before 6-month follow-up, whereas another six patients had high scores (> 8) and survived to 6 months with good Cerebral Performance Category. In the ICU, four of the survivors were directly extubated after rewarming while two were once more sedated due to pneumonia requiring invasive ventilator therapy. All patients required norepinephrine to maintain adequate mean arterial pressure. Isoflurane sedation was changed to midazolam in two nonsurviving patients because of hemodynamic instability, which persisted despite the change., Conclusions: Sedation with volatile anesthetics during therapeutic hypothermia may be a feasible short-acting option with potential postconditioning effects protecting vital organs from ischemia-reperfusion injury. Its measurability and insignificant drug accumulation could facilitate early neurologic assessment. Prospective clinical trials are warranted.

A player's ability to score low is critical to the tournament outcome in golf. The relationships of round scores to fairways hit in regulation or striking distance on two holes per round have been investigated before with some disagreement. The purpose is therefore to examine the relationships of par-4 and par-5 hole scores to tee shot functional accuracy and distance, measured as lie of the ball and penalty, and striking distance or distance to the pin for the second shot. Such information is possible to collect without interviewing players. The best US Professional Golfers' Association Tour players' statistics during a season are used, provided by the Professional Golfers' Association Tour and ShotLink. Distance was measured with laser equipment. The results include significant (P < 0.05) correlations between score and striking distance or distance to pin, when hitting rough but not fairway on par-4s and when hitting fairway and rough on par-5s. It is therefore relevant, for performance, to consider the type of fairway miss as well as the striking distance in relation to the par and length of the hole. The findings can be considered when making gap and needs profiles, and when making tactical decisions for tee shots on different types of holes.

Vitamin C and polyphenol contents (anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, phenolic acids and flavonols) were analysed in commercial blackcurrant juice products purchased from various European countries (Finland, Poland, Germany, United Kingdom) using HPLC methods. The aim was to study variation between countries, as well as evaluate the intake of polyphenols from commercial juices. There was significant variation in the contents of polyphenols and vitamin C between countries. Expressed as the ready-to-drink beverages, German, Polish, Finnish and British products averaged anthocyanin contents of 38, 32, 12 and 7.5mg/2.5dl, proanthocyanidin contents of 27, 24, 10 and 1.2mg/2.5dl, flavonol contents of 16, 15, 5.2 & 1.9mg/2.5dl and phenolic acid contents of 12, 8.9, 3.7 and 1.5mg/2.5dl, respectively. The mean vitamin C content was highest in British (70mg/2.5dl) and lowest in Finnish products (15mg/2.5dl). The intake of polyphenols from German and Polish ready-to-drink beverages was clearly higher than that from Finnish, and especially, British beverages., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Studies of volatile anesthetic administration during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) report reduced serum levels of post-operative cardiac troponin-T (cTnT). Our primary objective was to evaluate whether short-term sedation with sevoflurane in the intensive care unit (ICU)--after CABG--could affect the release of cTnT, compared with propofol sedation., Methods: Following isolated CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass, 100 patients were randomized to either sevoflurane via the Anesthetic Conserving Device (AnaConDa(®)) or propofol for ICU sedation. Study drugs were administered for 2 h during mechanical ventilation and thereafter until extubation criteria were met. The primary endpoint was cTnT 12 h post-operatively. Crude cTnT data were not normally distributed and therefore compared with the Mann-Whitney U-test. Because of the skewed pre-operative and post-operative cTnT data, we performed a post hoc analysis of the change in cTnT between pre-operative values and 12 h post-operatively., Results: There was no statistically significant difference between groups in the primary endpoint cTnT values at 12 h post-operatively, cardiac events or the need for hemodynamic support. In the post hoc analysis, the cTnT increase from pre-operative values to 12 h post-operatively was less pronounced in the sevoflurane group (P=0.008)., Conclusion: Post-operative short-term sevoflurane sedation following CABG, in comparison with propofol, did not affect the cTnT values at 12 h post-operatively and clinical outcome was equal between groups. The result from the post hoc analysis, with less cTnT change over time, is nevertheless hypothesis-generating and warrants a larger study., (© 2011 The Authors. The aim of this study was to investigate whether kinematic proximal-to-distal sequencing (PDS) and speed-summation are common characteristics of both partial and full-swing shots in golf players of different skill levels and genders. A total of 45 golfers participated, 11 male tournament professionals, 21 male and 13 female elite amateurs. They performed partial shots with a wedge to targets at three submaximal distances, 40, 55 and 70 m, and full-swing shots with a 5 iron and a driver for maximal distance. Pelvis, upper torso and hand movements were recorded in 3D with an electromagnetic tracking system (Polhemus Liberty) at 240 Hz and the magnitude of the resultant angular velocity vector of each segment was computed. The results showed a significant proximal-to-distal temporal relationship and a concomitant successive increase in maximum (peak) segment angular speed in every shot condition for both genders and levels of expertise. A proximal-to-distal utilization of interaction torques is indicated. Using a common PDS movement strategy in partial and full-swing golf shots appears beneficial from mechanical and control points of view and could serve the purpose of providing both high speed and accuracy.

Phenolic acids, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and ellagitannins are polyphenols that may have beneficial effects on human health and provide protection against chronic diseases. To date, limited data exist on quantitative intake of polyphenols. The aims of this study were to estimate the quantitative intakes of polyphenols by using analyzed concentrations together with individual food consumption records and to determine major dietary sources. Analyzed concentrations of phenolic acids, anthocyanidins, and other flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and ellagitannins (44 total polyphenol compounds) were entered into the national food composition database, Fineli. The absolute intakes of the polyphenols and the corresponding food sources were calculated on the basis of 48-h dietary recalls of 2007 Finnish adults. The mean total intake of polyphenols was 863 +/- 415 mg/d. Phenolic acids comprised the dominant group of polyphenols (75% of total intake) followed by proanthocyanidins (14%) and anthocyanidins and other flavonoids (10%). Due to their high consumption and high concentrations of phenolic acids, coffee and cereals were the main contributors to total polyphenol intake. Berries and berry products were the main source for anthocyanidins, ellagitannins, and proanthocyanidins, and fruits were the main source for flavonols, flavones, and flavanones. The results give additional support to the recommendations for a varied diet with fruits, berries, cereals, and vegetables.

Using internal conical refraction, we demonstrate an Yb:KGW laser where the polarization state can be arbitrarily altered without any additional cavity components. The extinction ratio can also be altered between 1:1 and 40:1. The maximum output power achieved was 8.6 W at a slope efficiency of 60.5% with respect to incident pump power. This equals the power performance of a standard Yb:KGW laser used for reference.

Proanthocyanidin oligomers with different degrees of polymerization were isolated from Saskatoon berries (Amelanchier alnifolia) by means of gel adsorption and normal-phase liquid chromatography. The proanthocyanidins were identified using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and thiolytic degradation coupled with reversed-phase liquid chromatography. The results established that Saskatoon berries contain proanthocyanidins from dimers through heptamers and higher polymers. Saskatoon proanthocyanidins are essentially of procyanidin type, consisting mainly of epicatechin units linked by B-type bonds. The simple procyanidin profile of Saskatoon berries allowed the procyanidins to be separated precisely according to their degrees of polymerization. In the future they can be used as standard compounds for qualitative and quantitative analysis of procyanidins as well as for elucidation of the biological activities of proanthocyanidins.

The contents of soluble and total phenolic acids were analyzed in samples of 29 berries and berry products, 24 fruits and fruit peels, and 12 beverages. Variation of phenolic acids in berries was also studied. Soluble phenolic acids were extracted with methanolic acetic acid, and a tentative quantification was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The total phenolic acid content was determined by HPLC after alkaline and acid hydrolyses. The content of total phenolic acids as aglycones in the above samples varied from 0 (pear cider) to 103 mg/100 g fresh weight (rowanberry). Besides rowanberry, the best phenolic acid sources among berries were chokeberry (96 mg/100 g), blueberry (85 mg/100 g), sweet rowanberry (75 mg/100 g), and saskatoon berry (59 mg/100 g). Among fruits, the highest contents (28 mg/100 g) were determined in dark plum, cherry, and one apple variety (Valkea Kuulas). Coffee (97 mg/100 g) as well as green and black teas (30-36 mg/100 g) were the best sources among beverages. Caffeic acid dominated in all of these samples except in tea brews. Variation in the phenolic acid contents of the berries was either small or moderate.

The contents of free and total phenolic acids and alk(en)ylresorcinols were analyzed in commercial products of eight grains: oat (Avena sativa), wheat (Triticum spp.), rye (Secale cerale), barley (Hordeum vulgare), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), millet (Panicum miliaceum), rice (Oryza sativa), and corn (Zea mays). Avenanthramides were determined in three oat products. Free phenolic acids, alk(en)ylresorcinols, and avenanthramides were extracted with methanolic acetic acid, 100% methanol, and 80% methanol, respectively, and quantified by HPLC. The contents of total phenolic acids were quantified by HPLC analysis after alkaline and acid hydrolyses. The highest contents of total phenolic acids were in brans of wheat (4527 mg/kg) and rye (4190 mg/kg) and in whole-grain flours of these grains (1342 and 1366 mg/kg, respectively). In other products, the contents varied from 111 mg/kg (white wheat bread) to 765 mg/kg (whole-grain rye bread). Common phenolic acids found in the grain products were ferulic acid (most abundant), ferulic acid dehydrodimers, sinapic acid, and p-coumaric acid. The grain products were found to contain either none or only low amounts of free phenolic acids. The content of avenanthramides in oat flakes (26-27 mg/kg) was about double that found in oat bran (13 mg/kg). The highest contents of alk(en)ylresorcinols were observed in brans of rye (4108 mg/kg) and wheat (3225 mg/kg). In addition, whole-grain rye products (rye bread, rye flour, and whole-wheat flour) contained considerable levels of alk(en)ylresorcinols (524, 927, and 759 mg/kg, respectively).

This study examined the relationship between generic drug market shares and the number of reported side effects. Yearly time-series data for the number of reported side effects and information on market shares, prices, and quantities from 1972 to 1996 were used in this study. Poisson and negative binomial regression models were used in the statistical analysis. The results show that increased generic market share increases the number of reported side effects for all estimated models. When studying the relationship at the substance level, increasing generic market shares increases the number of side effects for 7 of the 15 substances. Generic substitution laws and measures to increase generic competition may thus have unintended consequences since these results show a positive relationship between generic market shares and reported side effects.

The cholinergic C-bouton is a large nerve terminal found exclusively apposing motoneuron cell somata and proximal dendrites. The origin and function of the C-bouton is not known. An antiserum against the vesicular acetylcholine transporter was used to identify large cholinergic nerve terminals putatively of the C-type in close apposition to motoneuron cell somata. This type of nerve terminal was present in the rat spinal cord ventral horn, but only in some cranial motor nuclei. Fluoro-Gold tracing showed that subsets of spinal motoneuron cell somata were contacted by different numbers of putative C-boutons. Thus, motoneurons innervating an intrinsic foot muscle were contacted by about half the number of cholinergic terminals found on motoneurons of the predominantly fast-twitch gastrocnemius muscle. Slow-twitch soleus motoneurons showed an intermediate innervation. There was a strong correlation between the presence of putative C-boutons and muscarinic receptor 2 (m2)-like immunoreactivity (-LI) within a motor nucleus. By using confocal laser microscopy, the m2-LI appeared to be confined to the motoneuron cell membrane and strongly enriched beneath the C-type nerve terminal. Thus, our results suggested a differential distribution of large cholinergic C-boutons, depending on motoneuron type, and that the presence of this nerve terminal type is associated with m2-LI in the postsynaptic membrane., (Copyright 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

A singly resonant, single-axial-mode, optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) is reported. Signal (1.68 micron) and idler (2.90 micron) optical bandwidths have been narrowed to <400 MHz by use of a diffraction grating at grazing incidence. The OPO generates 370 microJ of signal radiation when pumped by 3.1 mJ of 1.064-micron radiation. We implemented a single-pass PPKTP amplifier to yield 2.15-mJ signal and 1.17-mJ idler radiation without broadening the spectral bandwidths.

We report on what is to our knowledge the first realization of a quasi-phase-matched optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on a crystal with a cylindrical shape. The main reason for interest in this device is its broad, continuous tuning. In experiments with a 1064-nm pump, the signal tuning range was equal to 525 nm (1515-2040 nm), and the corresponding idler was continuously tuned over 1340 nm (2220-3560 nm). The angular tuning was 26 degrees , with only a minor variation of the OPO threshold over the entire tuning range.

Of the different types of synaptic contacts with the mammalian spinal motoneuron, the synapse made by the cholinergic, so-called C-terminal of unknown origin and function has special morphological characteristics. Thus, in this synapse, there is no postsynaptic density but rather a large subsynaptic cistern in the motoneuron. To see whether this particular arrangement imposes special demands on the transmitter release machinery, we examined the presence of nerve terminal proteins in the C-terminal by using immunohistochemistry. Cholinergic nerve fibers and terminals in the spinal cord ventral horn were identified with an antiserum to the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) protein. Immunohistochemistry in combination with confocal laser microscopy showed the presence of synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 kDa (SNAP-25)-, syntaxin-, cysteine string protein (CSP)-, synuclein-, synapsin I-, synapsin I/II-, synaptotagmin I-, synaptotagmin I/II-, synaptophysin-, and synaptobrevin-2-like immunoreactivity (-LI) in VAChT-containing C-terminals. Synaptotagmin III and synaptobrevin 1 could not be demonstrated in this type of terminal. VAChT-containing varicosities in the Renshaw cell area, with a probable origin from motoneuron axon collaterals, exhibited CSP, synapsin I/II, and synaptobrevin-1-LI, but not SNAP-25-, syntaxin-, synuclein-, synapsin I-, synaptotagmin I-, synaptotagmin I/II-, synaptophysin- and synaptobrevin-2-LI. The results suggest a differential content of nerve terminal proteins and their isoforms in cholinergic C-terminals apposing motoneurons and in the Renshaw cell area. It is concluded that C-terminals contain synaptic proteins necessary for fast transmitter release, and their origin should not be the motoneurons themselves., (Copyright 1999 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

The use of periodically poled KTiOPO(4) as a gain medium in efficient nanosecond optical parametric oscillators pumped by a flash-lamp-pumped Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is demonstrated. Parametric radiation in the 1.8-2.5-mu m spectral region was achieved when the crystal temperature was tuned from 10 to 100 degrees C. A maximum total output energy of 1.8 mJ was obtained at a pump level of 3.5 mJ. Stable operation was achieved, with conversion efficiencies reaching 50%. No gray tracking or laser damage was observed, even for pump intensities of 450MW/cm(2).

Blood mercury was raised to levels exceeding 1,000 ng/gm by weekly oral doses of methylmercury hydroxide to squirrel monkeys. Operant behavior tests were employed and neurological signs were recorded on film. Sudden visual disturbance occured with subacute exposure. Prolonged exposure resulted in impaired coordination with impairment of scotopic vision and possibly also sensory disturbances. Scotopic vision was tested by determining the critical fusion intensity (cfi) at 10 cps. An increase in cfi was the earliest neurological sign appearing in some monkeys months before other signs could be detected. Poisoned monkeys exhibited typical cerebral cortical lesions. The visual cortex was invariably involved. Extension to adjacent cortical areas increased with increasing duration of exposure and increasing brain mercury. The microgram per gram brain tissue was the lowest concentration of methylmercury seen wiht morphological lesions.
