We investigated the rapid thermal annealing (RTA) sequence effect on the electrical, optical, morphological, and structural properties of transparent thin film transistors (TTFTs) with an indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) channel and an indium tin oxide (ITO) source/drain. The electrical and optical properties of the IGZO channel and the ITO source/drain electrodes were compared as a function of RTA temperature in ambient air. The performance of a TTFT with only an RTA-processed IGZO channel was compared with that of a TTFT with an RTA-processed IGZO channel and ITO source/drain electrodes. Using the circular transmission line measurement (CTLM) method, we suggest a possible mechanism that explains the effect of the RTA process on the performance of the TTFT with only an annealed IGZO channel vs. that with an annealed IGZO/ITO multilayer. The TTFT with an RTA-processed IGZO/ITO multilayer showed a threshold voltage shift, an improved on/off ratio of 3.54 × 1011, a subthreshold swing of 0.33 V/decade, and a high mobility of 8.69 cm2/V·s. This indicates that simultaneous RTA processing for an IGZO channel and an ITO electrode is beneficial for the fabrication of high-performance TTFTs.

With rapid advances in flexible electronics, transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) have also been significantly developed as alternatives to the conventional indium tin oxide (ITO)-based material systems that exhibit low mechanical flexibility. Nanomaterial-based alternating materials, such as graphene, nanowire, and nanomesh, exhibit remarkable properties for TCE-based applications, such as high electrical conductivity, high optical transparency, and high mechanical stability. However, these nanomaterial-based systems lack scalability, which is a key requirement for practical applications, and exhibit a size-dependent property variation and inhomogeneous surface uniformity that limit reliable properties over a large area. Here, we exploited a conventional ITO-based material platform; however, we incorporated a transparent molecular adhesive, 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), to improve mechanical flexibility. While the presence of 4-AP barely affected optical transmittance and sheet resistance, it improved interfacial adhesion between the substrate and ITO as well as formed a wavy surface, which could improve the mechanical flexibility. Under various mechanical tests, ITO/4-AP/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) exhibited remarkably improved mechanical flexibility as compared with that of ITO/PET. Furthermore, ITO/4-AP/PET was utilized for a flexible Joule heater application having spatial uniformity of heat generation, voltage-dependent temperature control, and mechanical flexibility under repeated bending tests. This molecular adhesive could overcome the current limitations of material systems for flexible electronics.

We report on the development of a cost effective, highly transparent flexible conductive electrode for energy conversion devices using the ITO/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposite. The ITO/PEDOT:PSS nano composite thin film was deposited via bar coating, then its characteristics were examined. In particular, we study any changes in its transparency and resistance. The thin film transparent ITO/PEDOT:PSS was annealed using a low temperature annealing technique called plasma annealing. The purpose of low temperature plasma annealing is to help excite the electrons from their bonding states in the valence band into the antibonding states of the conduction band where a second order phase transition occurs. This study investigates the influence of O2 plasma annealing on the resistance of the nano composite thin films. The included PEDOT:PSS supports the flexibility of the ITO, as pristine ITO is brittle. High optical transmittance of 93.73% at 550 nm and a reduction in the sheet resistance were achieved using this plasma annealing from 1105 Ω/□ to 535 Ω/□ on the ITO/PEDOT:PSS nano composite making them excellent candidates to develop as cost effective flexible transparent electrodes that can be used as thin film heaters.

Right-sided colonic diverticulitis (RCD) and left-sided colonic diverticulitis (LCD) are considered distinct diseases. However, separate guidelines for RCD do not exist. Since the establishment of RCD management would first require evaluation of disease characteristics and recurrence patterns, this study has aimed to investigate the differences in the clinical characteristics between RCD and LCD and the recurrence patterns of RCD.Patients admitted for colonic diverticulitis between January 2012 and August 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical characteristics and recurrence rates in RCD and LCD patients, and predictors for recurrence and the recurrence patterns of RCD were analyzed.In total, 446 colonic diverticulitis patients (343 RCD, 103 LCD) were included in this study. RCD patients were more likely to be male, younger, taller, heavier, smoke, drink alcohol, have better physical performance scores, lower modified Hinchey stages and better initial laboratory findings. LCD patients were more likely to receive invasive treatments, have longer fasting and hospital days, higher mortality and cumulative recurrence rates (20.5% vs. 30.4%, P = 0.007). Recurrences in most RCD patients were of similar disease severity and received the same treatments for initial attacks, with rates of recurrence increasing after each recurrence. Predictors of the recurrence of RCD were complicated diverticulitis (hazard ratio[HR] 2.512, 95% confidence interval[CI] 0.127-5.599, p = 0.024) and percutaneous drainage (HR 6.549, 95% CI 1.535-27.930, p = 0.011).RCD is less severe and has a lower recurrence rate than LCD, suggesting that RCD should be treated conservatively. Patients with complicated diseases and those requiring percutaneous drainage are more likely to experience a disease recurrence, suggesting nonsurgical management may be insufficient.

Background and AimCurrent therapeutic strategies for Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI), including oral vancomycin, metronidazole and fecal microbial transplantation, have limited efficacy and treatment failure may occur in as many as one- third of cases. Recent studies have reported that lower concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are associated with CDI severity and recurrence. However, there have been no studies on microbiota composition after the administration of vitamin D in patients with CDI. Therefore, our study aimed to compare the microbiota composition between the two groups, including eight CDI-positive patients with vitamin D supplementation and ten CDI-positive patients without vitamin D supplementation by using 16S rRNA microbial profiling.MethodsTwenty subjects were enrolled in this prospective randomized controlled study. One subject dropped out due to lack of contact with the guardian after discharge and one subject dropped out due to withdrawal of consent. Thus, 18 patients with CDI and vitamin D insufficiency (vitamin D level < 17 ng/mL) were divided into two groups: CDI with vitamin D supplementation (n = 8) and CDI without vitamin D supplementation (control: n = 10). Subjects with vitamin D insufficiency were randomized to receive 200,000 IU intramuscular cholecalciferol whereas patients in the control group received only oral vancomycin. Stool samples were obtained twice before vancomycin was administered and eight weeks after treatment; the V3-V4 16S rRNA metagenomic sequencing was performed using EzBioCloud.ResultsThe alpha diversity of the gut microbiota in the recovery state was significantly higher than that in the CDI state. Analysis of bacterial relative abundance showed significantly lower Proteobacteria and higher Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae, Akkermansiaceae, and Bifidobacteriaceae in the recovery state. When comparing the control and vitamin D treatment groups after eight weeks, increase in alpha diversity and, abundance of Lachnospiraceae, and Ruminococcaceae exhibited the same trend in both groups. A significant increase in Bifidobacteriaceae and Christensenellaceae was observed in the vitamin D group; Proteobacteria abundance was significantly lower in the vitamin D treatment group after eight weeks than that in the control group.ConclusionOur study confirmed that the increase in the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteriaceae, and Christensenellaceae were prominently evident during recovery after administration of a high dose of cholecalciferol. These findings indicate that vitamin D administration may be useful in patients with CDI, and further studies with larger sample sizes are required.

We demonstrated highly transparent and flexible polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) passivation for the MoS2/Ag nanowire (Ag NW) electrodes used in thin film heaters (TFHs). The electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of PTFE coated MoS2/Ag NW electrode were compared to the bare MoS2/Ag NW electrode to demonstrate effective passivation of the sputtered PTFE films before and after the 85 °C–85% temperature-relative humidity environment test. In addition, we investigated the performances of TFHs with PTFE/MoS2/Ag NW as a function of PTFE thickness from 50 to 200 nm. The saturation temperature (87.3 °C) of TFHs with PTFE/MoS2/Ag NW electrode is higher than that (61.3 °C) of TFHs with bare MoS2/Ag NW, even after the 85 °C–85% temperature-relative humidity environment test, due to effective passivation of the PTFE layer. This indicates that transparent PTFE film prepared by sputtering process provides effective thin film passivation for the two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 and Ag NW hybrid electrode against harsh environment condition.
