Search

We report on the temporal and spectral characteristics of the early X-ray emission from the GRB 050822 as observed by Swift. This burst is likely to be an XRF showing major X-ray flares in its XRT light-curve. The quality of the data allows a detailed spectral analysis of the early afterglow in the X-ray band. During the X-ray flares, a positive correlation between the count rate and the spectral hardness (i.e. the higher the count rate, the harder the spectrum) is clearly seen for the X-ray flares. This behaviour, similar to that seen for Gamma-ray pulses, indicates that the energy peak of the spectrum is in the XRT energy band and it moves towards lower energies with time. We show evidence for the possible detection of the emergence of the forward-shock emission, produced at a radius larger than 4x10^16 cm in the case of a CBM afterglow model (a formation region clearly different from that producing the prompt emission). Finally, we show that the null detection of a jet break up to T_0 + 4x10^6 s in the X-ray light curve of this XRF can be understood: i) if the jet seen on-axis is uniform with a large opening angle theta > 20 degrees); or ii) if the jet is a structured Gaussian-like jet with the line-of-sight outside the bright Gaussian core., Comment: Now accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the temporal and spectral characteristics of the early X-ray emission from the Gamma Ray Burst 051117A as observed by Swift. The superb quality of the early X-ray light-curve and spectra of this source, one of the brightest seen by the X-ray Telescope at such early times, allows an unprecedented look at the spectral and temporal evolution of the prompt and early afterglow emission for this GRB and allows us to place stringent limits on the detection of lines. The X-ray light-curve at early times is characteristic of a shot-noise process, with individual shots well-modelled by a fast-rise and exponential decay spanning a broad range in rise-times and decay rates. A temporal spectral analysis of the early light-curve shows that the photon index and source intensity are highly correlated with the spectrum being significantly harder when brighter, consistent with the movement of the peak of the Band function to lower energies following individual flares. The high quality spectrum obtained from the first orbit of WT mode data, enables us to place a 3 sigma upper limit on the strength of any emission line features of EW < 15 eV, assuming a narrow emission-line of 100 eV at the peak of the effective area (abridged)., Comment: Accepted 15/3/2007 - To appear in A&A

We present observations of GRB 060124, the first event for which both the prompt and the afterglow emission could be observed simultaneously and in their entirety by the three Swift instruments and by Konus-Wind. Thanks to these exceptional circumstances, the temporal and spectral properties of the prompt emission could be studied in the optical, X-ray and gamma-ray ranges (up to 2 MeV). While the X-ray emission (0.2-10 keV) clearly tracks the gamma-ray burst, the optical component follows a different pattern, likely indicating a different origin, possibly the onset of external shocks. The prompt GRB spectrum shows significant spectral evolution, with both the peak energy and the spectral index varying. As observed in several long GRBs, significant lags are measured between the hard- and low-energy components, showing that this behaviour extends over 3 decades in energy. The GRB peaks are also much broader at soft energies. This is related to the temporal evolution of the spectrum, and can be accounted for by the softening of the electron spectral index with time. The burst energy (E_iso~5x10^{53} erg at z=2.297) and average peak energy (E_p~300 keV) make GRB 060124 consistent with the Amati relation. We show that all X-ray decay curves of GRBs measured by Swift can be fitted using one or two components both of which have exactly the same functional form comprised of an early falling exponential phase followed by a power law decay. The 1st component contains the prompt gamma-ray emission and the initial X-ray decay. The 2nd component appears later, has a much longer duration and is present for ~80% of GRBs. It most likely arises from the external shock which eventually develops into the X-ray afterglow. In the remaining ~20% of GRBs the initial X-ray decay of the 1st component fades more slowly than the 2nd and dominates at late times to form an afterglow but it is not clear what the origin of this emission is. The temporal decay parameters and gamma/X-ray spectral indices derived for 107 GRBs are compared to the expectations of the standard fireball model including a search for possible "jet breaks". For ~50% of GRBs the observed afterglow is in accord with the model but for the rest the temporal and spectral indices do not conform to the expected closure relations and are suggestive of continued, late, energy injection. We identify a few possible jet breaks but there are many examples where such breaks are predicted but are absent. The time, T_a, at which the exponential phase of the 2nd component changes to a final powerlaw decay afterglow is correlated with the peak of the gamma-ray spectrum, E_peak. This is analogous to the Ghirlanda relation, indicating that this time is in some way related to optically observed break times measured for pre-Swift bursts., Comment: submitted to ApJ

Swift discovered the high redshift (z=6.29) GRB050904 with the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and began observing with its narrow field instruments 161 s after the burst onset. This gamma-ray burst is the most distant cosmic explosion ever observed. Because of its high redshift, the X-ray Telescope (XRT) and BAT simultaneous observations provide 4 orders of magnitude of spectral coverage (0.2-150 keV; 1.4-1090 keV in the source rest frame) at a very early source-frame time (22 s). GRB050904 was a long, multi-peaked, bright GRB with strong variability during its entire evolution. The light curve observed by the XRT is characterized by the presence of a long flaring activity lasting up to 1-2 hours after the burst onset in the burst rest frame, with no evidence of a smooth power-law decay following the prompt emission as seen in other GRBs. However, the BAT tail extrapolated to the XRT band joins the XRT early light curve and the overall behavior resembles that of a very long GRB prompt. The spectral energy distribution softens with time, with the photon index decreasing from -1.2 during the BAT observation to -1.9 at the end of the XRT observation. The dips of the late X-ray flares may be consistent with an underlying X-ray emission arising from the forward shock and with the properties of the optical afterglow reported by Tagliaferri et al. (2005b). We interpret the BAT and XRT data as a single continuous observation of the prompt emission from a very long GRB. Optical time series photometry of the short period magnetic white dwarf + probable brown dwarf binary SDSS 121209.31+013627.7 reveals pulse-like variability in all bands from i' to u', peaking at u'. These modulations are most likely due to a self-eclipsing accretion hot spot on the white dwarf, rotating into view every 88.43 minutes. This period is commensurate with the radial velocity period determined by Schmidt et al. 2005 of ~90 minutes, and consistent with the rotation period of the accretor being equal to the binary orbital period. We combine our observations with those recently published by Koen and Maxted 2006 to provide an accurate ephemeris. We also detect the system in X-rays with Swift, and estimate the accretion rate at ~1x10^-13Msun per year. We suggest that SDSS1212 is most likely a magnetic cataclysmic variable in an extended state of very low accretion, similar to the well-studied Polar EF Eri. Alternatively, the putative brown dwarf is not filling its Roche Lobe and the system is a detached binary in which the white dwarf is efficiently accreting from the wind of the secondary. Six such post-common envelope, ``pre-Polar'' systems - termed ``low accretion rate Polars (LARPs)'' by Schwope et al. 2002 - have previously been identified through optical cyclotron emission lines. Cyclotron emission from SDSS1212 has recently been detected in the near-IR Debes et al. 2006 but, if detached, it would be the first ``LARP'' with a probably sub-stellar secondary. It is unclear whether an L-dwarf wind is strong enough to provide the measured accretion rate. We report the results of a 2-month campaign conducted with the Chandra X-ray observatory to monitor the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5204 X-1. This was composed of a 50-ks observation, followed by ten 5-ks follow-ups spaced initially at ~ 3, then at ~ 10 day intervals. The ULX flux is seen to vary by factors ~ 5 on timescales of a few days, but no strong variability is seen on timescales shorter than an hour. There is no evidence for a periodic signal in the X-ray data. An examination of the X-ray colour variations over the period of the campaign shows the ULX emission consistently becomes spectrally harder as its flux increases. The X-ray spectrum from the 50-ks observation can be fitted by a number of disparate spectral models, all of which describe a smooth continuum with, unusually for a ULX, a broad emission feature evident at 0.96 keV. The spectral variations, both within the 50-ks observation and over the course of the whole campaign, can then be explained solely by variations in the continuum component. In the context of an optically-thick corona model (as found in other recent results for ULXs) the spectral variations can be explained by the heating of the corona as the luminosity of the ULX increases, consistent with the behaviour of at least one Galactic black hole system in the strongly-Comptonised very high state. We present the discovery of XRF 050215B and its afterglow. The burst was detected by the Swift BAT during the check-out phase and observations with the X-ray telescope began approximately 30 minutes after the burst. These observations found a faint, slowly fading X-ray afterglow near the centre of the error box as reported by the BAT. Infrared data, obtained at UKIRT after 10 hours also revealed a very faint K-band afterglow. The afterglow appear unusual since it is very faint, especially in the infrared with K>20 only 9 hours post burst. The X-ray and infrared lightcurves exhibit a slow, monotonic decay with alpha=0.8 and no evidence for steepening associated with the jet break to 10 days post burst. The study of the early high-energy emission from both long and short Gamma-ray bursts has been revolutionized by the Swift mission. The rapid response of Swift shows that the non-thermal X-ray emission transitions smoothly from the prompt phase into a decaying phase whatever the details of the light curve. The decay is often categorized by a steep-to-shallow transition suggesting that the prompt emission and the afterglow are two distinct emission components. In those GRBs with an initially steeply-decaying X-ray light curve we are probably seeing off-axis emission due to termination of intense central engine activity. This phase is usually followed, within the first hour, by a shallow decay, giving the appearance of a late emission hump. The late emission hump can last for up to a day, and hence, although faint, is energetically very significant. The energy emitted during the late emission hump is very likely due to the forward shock being constantly refreshed by either late central engine activity or less relativistic material emitted during the prompt phase. In other GRBs the early X-ray emission decays gradually following the prompt emission with no evidence for early temporal breaks, and in these bursts the emission may be dominated by classical afterglow emission from the external shock as the relativistic jet is slowed by interaction with the surrounding circum-burst medium. At least half of the GRBs observed by Swift also show erratic X-ray flaring behaviour, usually within the first few hours. The properties of the X-ray flares suggest that they are due to central engine activity. RS Ophiuchi began its latest outburst on 2006 February 12. Previous outbursts have indicated that high velocity ejecta interact with a pre-existing red giant wind, setting up shock systems analogous to those seen in Supernova Remnants. However, in the previous outburst in 1985, X-ray observations did not commence until 55 days after the initial explosion. Here we report on Swift observations covering the first month of the 2006 outburst with the Burst Alert (BAT) and X-ray Telescope (XRT) instruments. RS Oph was clearly detected in the BAT 14-25 keV band from t=0 to $t\sim6$ days. XRT observationsfrom 0.3-10 keV, started at 3.17 days after outburst. The rapidly evolving XRT spectra clearly show the presence of both line and continuum emission which can be fitted by thermal emission from hot gas whose characteristic temperature, overlying absorbing column, $[N_H]_W$, and resulting unabsorbed total flux decline monotonically after the first few days. Derived shock velocities are in good agreement with those found from observations at other wavelengths. Similarly, $[N_H]_W$ is in accord with that expected from the red giant wind ahead of the forward shock. We confirm the basic models of the 1985 outburst and conclude that standard Phase I remnant evolution terminated by $t\sim10$ days and the remnant then rapidly evolved to display behaviour characteristic of Phase III. The unique capability of the Swift satellite to perform a prompt and autonomous slew to a newly detected Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) has yielded the discovery of interesting new properties of GRB X-ray afterglows, such as the steep early lightcurve decay and the frequent presence of flares detected up to a few hours after the GRB trigger. We present observations of GRB 050607, the fourth case of a GRB discovered by Swift with flares superimposed on the overall fading X-ray afterglow. The flares of GRB 050607 were not symmetric as in previously reported cases, showing a very steep rise and a shallower decay, similar to the Fast Rise, Exponential Decay that are frequently observed in the gamma-ray prompt emission. The brighter flare had a flux increase by a factor of approximately 25,peaking for 30 seconds at a count rate of approximately 30 counts s-1, and it presented hints of addition short time scale activity during the decay phase. There is evidence of spectral evolution during the flares. In particular, at the onset of the flares the observed emission was harder, with a gradual softening as each flare decayed. The very short time scale and the spectral variability during the flaring activity are indicators of possible extended periods of energy emission by the GRB central engine. The flares were followed by a phase of shallow decay, during which the forward shock was being refreshed by a long-lived central engine or by shells of lower Lorentz factors, and by a steepening after approximately 12 ks to a decay slope considered typical of X-ray afterglows., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

We report the discovery and subsequent multi-wavelength afterglow behaviour of the high redshift (z = 4.27) Gamma Ray Burst GRB 050505. This burst is the third most distant burst, measured by spectroscopic redshift, discovered after GRB 000131 (z = 4.50) and GRB 050904 (z = 6.29). GRB 050505 is a long GRB with a multipeaked gamma-ray light curve, with a duration of T_90 = 63+/-2 s and an inferred isotropic release in gamma-rays of ~4.44 x 10^53 ergs in the 1-10^4 keV rest frame energy range. The Swift X-Ray Telescope followed the afterglow for 14 days, detecting two breaks in the light curve at 7.4(+/-1.5) ks and 58.0 (+9.9/-15.4) ks after the burst trigger. The power law decay slopes before, between and after these breaks were 0.25 (+0.16/-0.17), 1.17 (+0.08/-0.09) and 1.97 (+0.27/-0.28) respectively. The light curve can also be fit with a `smoothly broken' power law model with a break observed at ~ T+18.5 ks, with decay slopes of ~0.4 and ~1.8 before and after the break respectively. The X-ray afterglow shows no spectral variation over the course of the Swift observations, being well fit with a single power law of photon index ~1.90. This behaviour is expected for the cessation of continued energisation of the ISM shock followed by a break caused by a jet, either uniform or structured. Neither break is consistent with a cooling break. The spectral energy distribution indeed shows the cooling frequency to be below the X-ray but above optical frequencies. The optical -- X-ray spectrum also shows that there is significant X-ray absorption in excess of that due to our Galaxy but very little optical/UV extinction, with E(B-V) ~0.10 for a SMC-like extinction curve., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. The X-ray light curves of many gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift X-Ray Telescope (XRT) have a very steep-decay component (tail) following the prompt gamma-rays in the early phase and have some erratic flares occurring at a time from ~10^2 up to ~10^5 seconds. Based on the assumption that these tails and flares are of internal shock origin and that their decline behaviors are dominated by the curvature effect of the fireball, we present a self-consistency test for this scenario with a sample of 36 prompt-emission-tails/flare-tails in 22 GRB XRT light curves. Our results show that the t0 of the prompt emission tails and the tails of well-separated flares are usually at the rising segment of the last pulse of the prompt emission or the corresponding X-ray flare, being self-consistent with the expectation of the internal dissipation models for the prompt emission and X-ray flares. Our results indicate that each X-ray flare forms a distinct new episode of central engine activity and the GRB central engine remains active after the prompt emission is over, sometimes up to ~1 day after the GRB trigger (e.g. GRB 050502B & GRB 050724). This challenges the conventional central engine models and calls for new ideas to re-start the central engine. We further show that the on-set time of the late central engine activity does not depend on the GRB duration. We also identify a minority group of GRBs whose combined BAT-XRT light curves are smoothly connected without an abrupt transition between the prompt emission and the afterglow. Observations of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) with Swift produced the initially surprising result that many bursts have large X-ray flares superimposed on the underlying afterglow. These flares were sometimes intense, rapid, and late relative to the nominal prompt phase. The most intense of these flares was observed by XRT with a flux >500 the afterglow. This burst then surprised observers by flaring again after >10000 s. The intense flare can be most easily understood within the context of the standard fireball model, if the internal engine that powers the prompt GRB emission is still active at late times. Recent observations indicate that X-ray flares are detected in ~1/3 of XRT detected afterglows. Data from the Swift satellite has enabled us for the first time to provide a complete picture of the gamma-ray burst emission mechanism and its relationship with the early afterglow emissions. We show that gamma-ray photons for two bursts, 050126 & 050219A, for which we have carried out detailed analysis were produced as a result of the synchrotron self-Compton process in the material ejected in the explosion when it was heated to a mildly relativistic temperature at a distance from the center of explosion of order the deceleration radius. Both of these bursts exhibit rapidly declining early X-ray afterglow lightcurves; this emission is from the same source that produced the gamma-ray burst. The technique we exploit to determine this is very general and makes no assumption about any particular model for gamma-ray generation except that the basic radiation mechanism is some combination of synchrotron and inverse-Compton processes in a relativistic outflow. For GRB 050219A we can rule out the possibility that energy from the explosion is carried outward by magnetic fields, and that the dissipation of this field produced the $\gamma$-ray burst., Comment: 5 pages 3 figures. to appear in MNRAS letter

We present observations of XRF 050406, the first burst detected by Swift showing a flare in its X-ray light curve. During this flare, which peaks at t_peak ~210s after the BAT trigger, a flux variation of (delta F)/F~6 in a very short time (delta t)/t_peak<<1 was observed. Its measured fluence in the 0.2-10 keV band was ~1.4x10^-8 erg cm^-2, which corresponds to 1-15% of the prompt fluence. We present indications of spectral variations during the flare. We argue that the producing mechanism is late internal shocks, which implies that the central engine is still active at 210s, though with a reduced power with respect to the prompt emission. The X-ray light curve flattens to a very shallow slope with decay index of ~0.5 after ~4400s, which also supports continued central engine activity at late times. This burst is classified as an X-ray flash, with a relatively low fluence (~10^-7 erg cm^-2 in the 15-350 keV band, E_iso~10^51 erg), a soft spectrum (photon index 2.65), no significant flux above ~50 keV and a peak energy E_p<15 keV. XRF 050406 is one of the first examples of a well-studied X-ray light curve of an XRF. We show that the main afterglow characteristics are qualitatively similar to those of normal GRBs. In particular, X-ray flares superimposed on a power-law light curve have now been seen in both XRFs and GRBs. We present observations of the early X-ray emission for a sample of 40 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) obtained using the Swift satellite for which the narrow-field instruments were pointed at the burst within 10 minutes of the trigger. Using data from the Burst Alert and X-Ray Telescopes, we show that the X-ray light curve can be well described by an exponential that relaxes into a power law, often with flares superimposed. The transition time between the exponential and the power law provides a physically defined timescale for the burst duration. In most bursts the power law breaks to a shallower decay within the first hour, and a late emission "hump" is observed which can last for many hours. In other GRBs the hump is weak or absent. The observed variety in the shape of the early X-ray light curve can be explained as a combination of three components: prompt emission from the central engine; afterglow; and the late hump. In this scenario, afterglow emission begins during or soon after the burst and the observed shape of the X-ray light curve depends on the relative strengths of the emission due to the central engine and that of the afterglow. There is a strong correlation such that those GRBs with stronger afterglow components have brighter early optical emission. The late emission hump can have a total fluence equivalent to that of the prompt phase. GRBs with the strongest late humps have weak or no X-ray flares., Comment: Submitted to ApJ on December 16. Until recently, X-ray flares during the afterglow of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) were a rarely detected phenomenon, thus their nature is unclear. During the afterglow of GRB 050502B, the largest X-ray flare ever recorded rose rapidly above the afterglow lightcurve detected by the Swift X-ray Telescope. The peak flux of the flare was >500 times that of the underlying afterglow, and it occurred at >12 minutes after the nominal prompt burst emission. The fluence of this X-ray flare, (1.0 +/- 0.05) x 10^{-6} erg cm^{-2} in the 0.2-10.0 keV energy band, exceeded the fluence of the nominal prompt burst. The spectra during the flare were significantly harder than those measured before and after the flare. Later in time, there were additional flux increases detected above the underlying afterglow, as well as a break in the afterglow lightcurve. All evidence presented below, including spectral and particularly timing information during and around the giant flare, suggests that this giant flare was the result of internal dissipation of energy due to late central engine activity, rather than an afterglow-related effect. We also find that the data are consistent with a second central engine activity episode, in which the ejecta is moving slower than that of the initial episode, causing the giant flare and then proceeding to overtake and refresh the afterglow shock, thus causing additional activity at even later times in the lightcurve., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We present Swift and XMM observations of GRB 050326, detected by Swift-BAT. The fluence was 7.7x10^-6 erg cm^-2 (20-150 keV), and its spectrum was hard, with a power law photon index 1.25. The afterglow light curve did not show any break nor flares between ~1 hr and ~6 d after the burst, and decayed with a slope 1.70. The afterglow spectrum is well fitted by a power-law model, suffering absorption both in the Milky Way and in the host galaxy. The rest-frame Hydrogen column density is significant, N_H_z > 4x10^21 cm^-2, and the redshift of the absorber is z > 1.5. There was good agreement between the Swift-XRT and XMM results. By comparing the prompt and afterglow fluxes, we found that an early break occurred before the XRT observation. The properties of the GRB 050326 afterglow are well described by a spherical fireball expanding in a uniform external medium, so a further steepening is expected at later times. The lack of such a break constrains the jet angle to be >7 deg. Using the redshift constraints provided by the X-ray analysis, we also estimated that the beaming-corrected gamma-ray energy was >3x10^51 erg, at the high end of GRB energies. Despite the brightness in X rays, only deep limits could be placed by Swift-UVOT at optical/UV wavelengths. Thus, this GRB was "truly dark", with the optical-to-X-ray spectrum violating the synchrotron limit. The optical and X-ray observations are consistent either with an absorbed event or with a high-redshift one. To obey the Ghirlanda relation, a moderate/large redshift z>4.5 is required. GRB 050911, discovered by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope, was not seen 4.6 hr later by the Swift X-ray Telescope, making it one of the very few X-ray non-detections of a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow at early times. The gamma-ray light-curve shows at least three peaks, the first two of which (~T_0 - 0.8 and T_0 + 0.2 s, where T_0 is the trigger time) were short, each lasting 0.5 s. This was followed by later emission 10-20 s post-burst. The upper limit on the unabsorbed X-ray flux was 1.7 x 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (integrating 46 ks of data taken between 11 and 18 September), indicating that the decay must have been rapid. All but one of the long bursts detected by Swift were above this limit at ~4.6 hr, whereas the afterglows of short bursts became undetectable more rapidly. Deep observations with Gemini also revealed no optical afterglow 12 hr after the burst, down to r=24.0 (5-sigma limit). We speculate that GRB 050911 may have been formed through a compact object (black hole-neutron star) merger, with the later outbursts due to a longer disc lifetime linked to a large mass ratio between the merging objects. We report on the temporal and spectral characteristics of the early X-ray emission from the Gamma Ray Bursts GRB050126 and GRB050219A as observed by Swift. The X-ray light-curves of these 2 bursts both show remarkably steep early decays (F(t)\propto t^{-3}), breaking to flatter slopes on timescales of a few hundred seconds. For GRB050126 the burst shows no evidence of spectral evolution in the 20-150 keV band, and the spectral index of the gamma-ray and X-ray afterglows are significantly different suggesting a separate origin. By contrast the BAT spectrum of GRB050219A displays significant spectral evolution, becoming softer at later times, with Gamma evolving toward the XRT photon index seen in the early X-ray afterglow phase. For both bursts, the 0.2-10 keV spectral index pre- and post-break in the X-ray decay light-curve are consistent with no spectral evolution. We suggest that the steep early decline in the X-ray decay light-curve is either the curvature tail of the prompt emission; X-ray flaring activity; or external forward shock emission from a jet with high density regions of small angular size (> Gamma^{-1}). Gamma-ray burst (GRB) progenitors are observationally linked to the death of massive stars. X-ray studies of the GRB afterglows can deepen our knowledge of the ionization status and metal abundances of the matter in the GRB environment. Moreover, the presence of local matter can be inferred through its fingerprints in the X-ray spectrum, i.e. the presence of absorption higher than the Galactic value. A few studies based on BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton found evidence of higher than Galactic values for the column density in a number of GRB afterglows. Here we report on a systematic analysis of 17 GRBs observed by Swift up to April 15, 2005. We observed a large number of GRBs with an excess of column density. Our sample, together with previous determinations of the intrinsic column densities for GRBs with known redshift, provides evidence for a distribution of absorption consistent with that predicted for randomly occurring GRB within molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A (5 pages and 2 figures)

We present a catalogue of refined positions of 68 gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows observed by the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) from the launch up to 2005 Oct 16. This is a result of the refinement of the XRT boresight calibration. We tested this correction by means of a systematic study of a large sample of X-ray sources observed by XRT with well established optical counterparts. We found that we can reduce the systematic error radius of the measurements by a factor of two, from 6.5" to 3.2" (90% of confidence). We corrected all the positions of the afterglows observed by XRT in the first 11 months of the Swift mission. This is particularly important for the 37 X-ray afterglows without optical counterpart. BAT and XRT observations of two recent well-covered GRBs observed by Swift, GRB 050315 and GRB 050319, show clearly a prompt component joining the onset of the afterglow emission. By fitting a power law form to the gamma-ray spectrum, we extrapolate the time dependent fluxes measured by the BAT, in the energy band 15-350 keV, into the spectral regime observed by the XRT 0.2-10 keV, and examine the functional form of the rate of decay of the two light curves. We find that the BAT and XRT light curves merge to form a unified curve. There is a period of steep decay up to ~300 s, followed by a flatter decay. The duration of the steep decay, ~100 s in the source frame after correcting for cosmological time dilation, agrees roughly with a theoretical estimate for the deceleration time of the relativistic ejecta as it interacts with circumstellar material. For GRB 050315, the steep decay can be characterized by an exponential form, where one e-folding decay time t_e(BAT) ~ 24+/-2 s, and t_e(XRT) ~ 35+/-2 s. For GRB 050319, a power law decay -(d ln f/d ln t) = n, where n is about 3, provides a reasonable fit. The early time X-ray fluxes are consistent with representing the lower energy tail of the prompt emission, and provide our first quantitative measure of the decay of the prompt gamma-ray emission over a large dynamic range in flux. The initial steep decay is expected due to the delayed high latitude photons from a curved shell of relativistic plasma illuminated only for a short interval. Two short (<2 s) g-ray bursts (GRBs) have recently been localized and fading afterglow counterparts detected. The combination of these two results left unclear the nature of the host galaxies of the bursts, because one was a star-forming dwarf, while the other was probably an elliptical galaxy. Here we report the X-ray localization of a short burst (GRB 050724) with unusual g-ray and X-ray properties. The X-ray afterglow lies off the centre of an elliptical galaxy at a redshift of z=0.258, coincident with the position determined by ground-based optical and radio observations. The low level of star formation typical for elliptical galaxies makes it unlikely that the burst originated n a supernova explosion. A supernova origin was also ruled out for GRB 050709, even though that burst took place in a galaxy with current star formation. The isotropic energy for the short bursts is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower han that for the long bursts. Our results therefore suggest that an alternative source of bursts -- the of binary systems of neutron stars or a neutron star-black hole pair -- are the progenitors of short bursts., Comment: 11 pages of taxt plus figures (all in 1 file). This paper discusses the X-ray halo around the Swift gamma-ray burst GRB 050724 (z=0.258), detected by the Swift X-Ray Telescope. The halo, which forms a ring around the fading X-ray source, expands to a radius of 200" within 8 ks of the burst exactly as expected for small-angle X-ray scattering by Galactic dust along the line of sight to a cosmologically distant GRB. The expansion curve and radial profile of the halo constrain the scattering dust to be concentrated at a distance of D = 139 +/- 9 pc (from Earth) in a cloud/sheet of thickness delta-D < 22 pc. The halo was observed only out to scattering angles of 200", for which the scattering is dominated by the largest grains, with a maximum size estimated to be a_max ~ 0.4-0.5 um. The scattering-to-extinction ratio was estimated to be tau_scat/A_V > 0.022; this is a lower limit to the true value because contribution from smaller grains, which scatter to larger angles, was not directly observed. The line-of-sight to the GRB passes close to the Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex, which provides a plausible site for the scattering dust., Comment: 8 pages. 9 figures. We have searched the broad-absorption-line quasar (BAL QSO) sample presented by Reichard et al. for objects exhibiting the so-called `ghost of Lyman alpha'. This ghost manifests as a hump near -5900kms in the troughs of the broad absorption lines and provides strong evidence for the importance of line-driving in powering the outflows from BAL QSOs. Of the 224 sample BAL QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release (EDR), 198 satisfy our redshift constraints and 58 show clear evidence of multiple-trough (MT) structure in the CIV line. A composite spectrum constructed from this MT sample already shows evidence for a ghost feature. Narrowing our classification scheme further, we define a set of 36 objects that individually show evidence of a ghost feature, and then apply further cuts to arrive at a final `best sample' that contains our seven strongest ghost candidates. A further five objects show evidence for a ghost feature that is almost strong enough to merit inclusion in our best sample. Despite its limited size, our best sample more than doubles the number of known BAL QSOs with clear ghost signatures and should make an excellent basis for detailed follow-up studies., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The controversy over whether ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) contain a new intermediate-mass class of black holes (IMBHs) remains unresolved. We present new analyses of the deepest XMM-Newton observations of ULXs that address their underlying nature. We examine both empirical and physical modelling of the X-ray spectra of a sample of thirteen of the highest quality ULX datasets, and find that there are anomalies in modelling ULXs as accreting IMBHs with properties simply scaled-up from Galactic black holes. Most notably, spectral curvature above 2 keV in several sources implies the presence of an optically-thick, cool corona. We also present a new analysis of a 100 ks observation of Holmberg II X-1, in which a rigorous analysis of the temporal data limits the mass of its black hole to no more than 100 solar masses. The Swift XRT has been observing GRB afterglows since December 23, 2004. Three-quarters of these observations begin within 300 s of the burst onset, providing an unprecendented look at the behavior of X-ray emission from GRB afterglows in the first few hours after the burst. While most of the early afterglows have smoothly declining lightcurves, a substantial fraction has large X-ray flares on short time-scales. This paper discusses Swift observations of the gamma-ray burst GRB 050315 (z=1.949) from 80 s to 10 days after the onset of the burst. The X-ray light curve displayed a steep early decay (t^-5) for ~200 s and several breaks. However, both the prompt hard X-ray/gamma-ray emission (observed by the BAT) and the first ~ 300 s of X-ray emission (observed by the XRT) can be explained by exponential decays, with similar decay constants. Extrapolating the BAT light curve into the XRT band suggests the rapidly decaying, early X-ray emission was simply a continuation of the fading prompt emission; this strong similarity between the prompt gamma-ray and early X-ray emission may be related to the simple temporal and spectral character of this X-ray rich GRB. The prompt (BAT) spectrum was a steep down to 15 keV, and appeared to continue through the XRT bandpass, implying a low peak energy, inconsistent with the Amati relation. Following the initial steep decline the X-ray afterglow did not fade for ~1.2*10^4 s, after which time it decayed with a temporal index of alpha ~ 0.7, followed by a second break at ~2.5*10^5 s to a slope of alpha ~ 2. The apparent `plateau' in the X-ray light curve, after the early rapid decay, makes this one of the most extreme examples of the steep-flat-steep X-ray light curves revealed by Swift. If the second afterglow break is identified with a jet break then the jet opening angle was theta_0 ~ 5 deg, and implying E_gamma > 10^50 erg., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. The Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) focal plane camera is a front-illuminated MOS CCD, providing a spectral response kernel of 144 eV FWHM at 6.5 keV. We describe the CCD calibration program based on celestial and on-board calibration sources, relevant in-flight experiences, and developments in the CCD response model. We illustrate how the revised response model describes the calibration sources well. Loss of temperature control motivated a laboratory program to re-optimize the CCD substrate voltage, we describe the small changes in the CCD response that would result from use of a substrate voltage of 6V., Comment: 8 pages, including 7 figures. We present results from a 112 ks long look by XMM-Newton at the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) Holmberg II X-1, long thought to be the one of best candidates for the missing class of intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). Our data comprises the first high quality XMM-Newton/RGS spectrum of an ULX, and an XMM-Newton/EPIC spectrum with unprecedented signal-to-noise. A detailed timing analysis shows that any variability on time-scales of minutes to hours is very weak (< few per cent fractional rms), though larger amplitude variations on much shorter time-scales could be hidden by photon counting statistics. This result suggests that if Ho II X-1 harbours an IMBH, then we are observing this source in a highly unusual and atypical state when compared with the known variability behaviour of other accreting systems of large mass. Moreover unlike Galactic X-ray binaries, our spectral analysis indicates the possible presence of an optically-thick low temperature corona. Taken together our timing and spectral analysis suggests that the compact companion is most-likely a high luminosity analogue of black hole binary systems similar to GRS 1915+105, the Galactic microquasar, harbouring a compact object of mass no greater than 100 solar masses., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are bright flashes of high energy photons that can last from about 10 milliseconds to 10 minutes. Their origin and nature have puzzled the scientific community for about 25 years until 1997, when the first X-ray afterglows of long (> 2 s duration) bursts were detected and the first optical and radio counterparts were found. These measurements established that long GRBs are typically at high redshift (z 1.6) and are in sub-luminous star-forming host galaxies. They are likely produced in core-collapse explosions of a class of massive stars that give rise to highly relativistic jets (collapsar model). Internal inhomogeneities in the velocity field of the relativistic expanding flow lead to collisions between fast moving and slow moving fluid shells and to the formation of internal shock waves. These shocks are believed to produce the observed prompt emission in the form of irregularly shaped and spaced pulses of gamma-rays, each pulse corresponding to a distinct internal collision. The expansion of the jet outward into the circumstellar medium is believed to give rise to ``external'' shocks, responsible for producing the smoothly fading afterglow emission seen in the X-ray, optical and radio bands. Here we report on the gamma-ray and x-ray observation of the most distant gamma-ray burst ever observed: its redshift of 6.29 translates to a distance of 13 billion light-years from Earth, corresponding to a time when the Universe was just 700 million to 750 million years old. The discovery of a gamma-ray burst at such a large redshift implies the presence of massive stars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. The very high redshift bursts represent a good way to study the re-ionization era soon after the Universe came out of the Dark Ages., Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 3 figures. Swift discovered the high redshift GRB 050319 with the Burst Alert Telescope and began observing with its narrow field instruments only 225 s after the burst onset. The afterglow X-ray emission was monitored by the XRT up to 28 days after the burst. The light curve shows a decay with three different phases, each characterized by a distinct slope: an initial steep decay with a power law index of ~ 5.5, a second phase characterized by a flat decay slope of \~ 0.54, and a third phase with a decay slope of ~ 1.14. During the first phase the spectral energy distribution is softer than in the following two phases and the photon index is consistent with the GRB prompt spectrum. The extrapolation of the BAT light curve to the XRT band suggests that the initial fast decaying phase of the XRT afterglow might be the low energy tail of the prompt emission. The second break in the afterglow light curve occurs about 27000 s after the burst. The spectral energy distribution before and after the second break does not change and it can be tentatively interpreted as a jet break or the end of a delayed or continuous energy injection phase., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures. Very early observations with the Swift satellite of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows reveal that the optical component is not detected in a large number of cases. This is in contrast to the bright optical flashes previously discovered in some GRBs (e.g. GRB 990123 and GRB 021211). Comparisons of the X-ray afterglow flux to the optical afterglow flux and prompt gamma-ray fluence is used to quantify the seemingly deficient optical, and in some cases X-ray, light at these early epochs. This comparison reveals that some of these bursts appear to have higher than normal gamma-ray efficiencies. We discuss possible mechanisms and their feasibility for explaining the apparent lack of early optical emission. The mechanisms considered include: foreground extinction, circumburst absorption, Ly-alpha blanketing and absorption due to high redshift, low density environments, rapid temporal decay, and intrinsic weakness of the reverse shock. Of these, foreground extinction, circumburst absorption, and high redshift provide the best explanations for most of the non-detections in our sample. There is tentative evidence of suppression of the strong reverse shock emission. This could be because of a Poynting-flux-dominated flow or a pure non-relativistic hydrodynamical reverse shock., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the results of Swift X-Ray Telescope (XRT) observations of GRB 050318. This event triggered the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) aboard Swift and was followed-up with XRT and UVOT for 11 consecutive orbits starting from 54 minutes after the trigger. A previously unknown fading X-ray source was detected and accurately monitored. The source was found to decrease in intensity with time and a clear temporal break occurring at ~18000 s after the trigger was observed. The X-ray light curve was found to be consistent with a broken power-law with decay indices -1.17 +/- 0.08 and -2.10 (+0.22) (-0.24) before and after the break. The spectrum of the X-ray afterglow was well described by a photoelectrically absorbed power-law with energy index of -1.09 +/-0.09. No evidence of spectral evolution was found. We compare these results with those obtained with UVOT and separately reported and refine the data analysis of BAT. We discuss our results in the framework of a collimated fireball model and a synchrotron radiation emission mechanism. Assuming the GRB redshift derived from the farthest optical absorption complex (z = 1.44), the event is fully consistent with the E_p-E_iso correlation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters (5 pages, 3 figures)

We present observations of GRB 050318 by the Ultra-Violet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) on-board the Swift observatory. The data are the first detections of a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) afterglow decay by the UVOT instrument, launched specifically to open a new window on these transient sources. We showcase UVOTs ability to provide multi-color photometry and the advantages of combining UVOT data with simultaneous and contemporaneous observations from the high-energy detectors on the Swift spacecraft. Multiple filters covering 1,800-6,000 Angstroms reveal a red source with spectral slope steeper than the simultaneous X-ray continuum. Spectral fits indicate that the UVOT colors are consistent with dust extinction by systems at z = 1.2037 and z = 1.4436, redshifts where absorption systems have been pre-identified. However, the data can be most-easily reproduced with models containing a foreground system of neutral gas redshifted by z = 2.8 +/- 0.3. For both of the above scenarios, spectral and decay slopes are, for the most part, consistent with fireball expansion into a uniform medium, provided a cooling break occurs between the energy ranges of the UVOT and Swifts X-ray instrumentation., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, ApJ Letters, in press

We present new observations of the early X-ray afterglows of the first 27 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected with the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT). The early X-ray afterglows show a canonical behavior, where the light curve broadly consists of three distinct power law segments: (i) an initial very steep decay (t^{-alpha} with 34, and augments the already severe requirements for the efficiency of the prompt gamma-ray emission., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent gamma-ray burst observations have revealed late-time, highly energetic events which deviate from the simplest expectations of the standard fireball picture. Instead they may indicate that the central engine is active or restarted at late times. GRB050223 was discovered by the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer on 23 February 2005 and was the first Gamma-Ray Burst to be observed by both Swift and XMM-Newton. At the time of writing (May 2005), it has one of the faintest GRB afterglows ever observed. The spacecraft could not slew immediately to the burst, so the first X-ray and optical observations occurred approximately 45 minutes after the trigger. Although no optical emission was found by any instrument, both Swift and XMM-Newton detected the fading X-ray afterglow. Combined data from both of these observatories show the afterglow to be fading monotonically as 0.99 +0.15/-0.12 over a time frame between 45 minutes to 27 hours post-burst. Spectral analysis, allowed largely by the higher through-put of XMM-Newton, implies a power-law with a slope of Gamma=1.75 +0.19/-0.18 and shows no evidence for absorption above the Galactic column of 7 x 10^20 cm^-2. From the X-ray decay and spectral slopes, a low electron power-law index of p = 1.3-1.9 is derived; the slopes also imply that a jet-break has not occured up to 27 hours after the burst. We analyze the Swift XRT light curves and spectra of the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) for which the redshift has been measured. The sample consists of seven GRBs. The soft X-ray light curves of all these GRBs are separated into at least two morphological classes: 1) those starting off with a very steep light curve decay and 2) those showing a rather mild initial decay. This initial decay is followed by a flattening and by a further steepening. During these transitions the soft X-ray spectrum of these GRBs remains constant within the observational errors (except for one case, GRB050319). For the first time we are able to exploit the early light curve of GRB afterglows in the comoving frame. Besides the temporal and spectral behavior we find that the energy of the afterglow emitted in the (rest frame) time interval 20-200 s and 1300-12600 s after the trigger correlates with the mean energy of the prompt emission, hinting at a close link between the two. Averaging over the bursts that have a rather well sampled light curve and starting immediately after the prompt phase, the energy emitted in the soft X-rays is about 3% of the energy emitted during the prompt phase, except for GRB050315, where the soft X-ray emission is as high as 14% of the prompt emission., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are commonly accepted to originate in the explosion of particularly massive stars, which gives rise to a highly relativistic jet. Internal inhomogeneities in the expanding flow give rise to internal shock waves that are believed to produce the gamma-rays we see. As the jet travels further outward into the surrounding circumstellar medium `external' shocks give rise to the afterglow emission seen in the X-ray, optical and radio bands. Here we report on the early phases of the X-ray emission of five GRBs. Their X-ray light curves are characterised by a rapid fall-off for the first few hundred seconds, followed by a less rapid decline lasting several hours. This steep decline, together with detailed spectral properties of two particular bursts, shows that violent shock interactions take place in the early jet outflows., Comment: 10 pages, 2 tables, 3 figures. Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows have provided important clues to the nature of these massive explosive events, providing direct information on the nearby environment and indirect information on the central engine that powers the burst. We report the discovery of two bright X-ray flares in GRB afterglows, including a giant flare comparable in total energy to the burst itself, each peaking minutes after the burst. These strong, rapid X-ray flares imply that the central engines of the bursts have long periods of activity, with strong internal shocks continuing for hundreds of seconds after the gamma-ray emission has ended., Comment: 12 pages, 1 table, 2 figures. Swift discovered GRB050128 with the Burst Alert Telescope and promptly pointed its narrow field instruments to monitor the afterglow. X-ray observations started 108 s after the trigger time. The early decay of the afterglow is relatively flat with a temporal decay modeled with a power law with index ~ -0.3. A steepening occurs at later times (~ 1500 s) with a power law index of ~ -1.3. During this transition, the observed X-ray spectrum does not change. We interpret this behaviour as either an early jet break or evidence for a transition from the fast cooling regime to the slow cooling regime in a wind environment., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJL (4 pages + 3 figures)

We present a detailed study of the long-timescale X-ray variability of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Galaxy MCG-6-30-15, based on 8 years of frequent observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Combined with short timescale XMM-Newton observations, we derive the powerspectral density (PSD) covering 6 decades from ~10^{-8} to ~10^{-2} Hz. As with NGC4051, another NLS1, the PSD of MCG-6-30-15 is a close analogue of the PSD of a Galactic Black Hole X-ray binary system (GBH) in a `high' rather than a `low' state. Like high state GBHs, its PSD is better fitted by a smoothly bending rather than sharply breaking powerlaw model and the break frequency is 7.6^{+10}_{-3} x 10^{-5} Hz. Assuming linear scaling of break frequency with mass, we estimate the black hole (BH) mass in MCG-6-30-15 to be ~2.9^{+1.8}_{-1.6} X 10^{6} solar masses. We also derive the BH mass using a variety of new optical observations and find a value between 3.6 and 6 x 10^{6} solar masses, consistent with the mass derived from the PSD. Combining these data with revised reverberation masses for other AGN we update the BH mass/break timescale diagram. The observations are consistent with NLS1s having shorter break timescales, for a given mass, than broad line AGN, probably reflecting a higher accretion rate. However the data are also consistent with all of the X-ray bright AGN being high state objects. This result may simply be a selection effect, based on their selection from X-ray all sky catalogues, and their consequent typically high X-ray/radio ratios, which indicate high state systems., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures.
