During plastic deformation of crystalline materials, point defects such as vacancies and interstitials are generated by jogs on moving dislocations. A detailed model for jog formation and transport during plastic deformation was developed within the vector density-based continuum dislocation dynamics framework (Lin and El-Azab, 2020; Xia and El-Azab, 2015). As a part of this model, point defect generation associated with jog transport was formulated in terms of the volume change due to the non-conservative motion of jogs. Balance equations for the vacancies and interstitials including their rate of generation due to jog transport were also formulated. A two-way coupling between point defects and dislocation dynamics was then completed by including the stress contributed by the eigen-strain of point defects. A jog drag stress was further introduced into the mobility law of dislocations to account for the energy dissipation during point defects generation. A number of test problems and a fully coupled simulation of dislocation dynamics and point defect generation and diffusion were performed. The results show that there is an asymmetry of vacancy and interstitial generation due to the different formation energies of the two types of defects. The results also show that a higher hardening rate and a higher dislocation density are obtained when the point defect generation mechanism is coupled to dislocation dynamics.

Continuum dislocation dynamics models of mesoscale plasticity consist of dislocation transport-reaction equations coupled with crystal mechanics equations. The coupling between these two sets of equations is such that dislocation transport gives rise to the evolution of plastic distortion (strain), while the evolution of the latter fixes the stress from which the dislocation velocity field is found via a mobility law. Earlier solutions of these equations employed a staggered solution scheme for the two sets of equations in which the plastic distortion was updated via time integration of its rate, as found from Orowan's law. In this work, we show that such a direct time integration scheme can suffer from accumulation of numerical errors. We introduce an alternative scheme based on field dislocation mechanics that ensures consistency between the plastic distortion and the dislocation content in the crystal. The new scheme is based on calculating the compatible and incompatible parts of the plastic distortion separately, and the incompatible part is calculated from the current dislocation density field. Stress field and dislocation transport calculations were implemented within a finite element based discretization of the governing equations, with the crystal mechanics part solved by a conventional Galerkin method and the dislocation transport equations by the least squares method. A simple test is first performed to show the accuracy of the two schemes for updating the plastic distortion, which shows that the solution method based on field dislocation mechanics is more accurate. This method then was used to simulate an austenitic steel crystal under uniaxial loading and multiple slip conditions.

We use photometry and proper motions from Gaia DR2 to determine the blue straggler star (BSS) populations of 16 old (1-10 Gyr), nearby ($d< 3500$ pc) open clusters. We find that the fractional number of BSS compared to RGB stars increases with age, starting near zero at 1 Gyr and flattening to $\sim 0.35$ by 4 Gyr. Fitting stellar evolutionary tracks to these BSS, we find that their mass distribution peaks at a few tenths of a solar mass above the main-sequence turnoff. BSS more than 0.5 $M_\odot$ above the turnoff make up only $\sim25$\% of the sample, and BSS more than 1.0 $M_\odot$ above the turnoff are rare. We compare this to population synthesis models of BSS formed via mass transfer using the Compact Object Synthesis and Monte Carlo Investigation Code (COSMIC). We find that standard population synthesis assumptions dramatically under-produce the number of BSS in old open clusters. We also find that these models overproduce high mass BSS relative to lower mass BSS. Expected numbers of BSS formed through dynamics do not fully account for this discrepancy. We conclude that in order to explain the observed BSS populations from Roche lobe overflow, mass-transfer from giant donors must be more stable than assumed in canonical mass-transfer prescriptions, and including non-conservative mass transfer is important in producing realistic BSS masses. Even with these modifications, it is difficult to achieve the large number of BSS observed in the oldest open clusters. Classical electromagnetism is linear. However, fields can polarize the vacuum Dirac sea, causing quantum nonlinear electromagnetic phenomena, e.g., scattering and splitting of photons, that occur only in very strong fields found in neutron stars or heavy ion colliders.We show that strong nonlinearity arises in Dirac materials at much lower fields $\sim 1\:\text{T}$, allowing us to explore the nonperturbative, extremely high field limit of quantum electrodynamics in solids. We explain recent experiments in a unified framework and predict a new class of nonlinear magneto-electric effects, including a magnetic enhancement of dielectric constant of insulators and a strong electric modulation of magnetization. We present and analyse 120 spectroscopic binary and triple cluster members of the old (4 Gyr) open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). As a cornerstone of stellar astrophysics, M67 is a key cluster in the WIYN Open Cluster Study (WOCS); radial-velocity (RV) observations of M67 are ongoing and extend back over 45 years, incorporating data from seven different telescopes, and allowing us to detect binaries with orbital periods <~10^4 days. Our sample contains 1296 stars (604 cluster members) with magnitudes of 10 <= V <= 16.5 (about 1.3 to 0.7 Msolar), from the giants down to ~4 mag below the main-sequence turnoff, and extends in radius to 30 arcminutes (7.4 pc at a distance of 850 pc, or ~7 core radii). This paper focuses primarily on the main-sequence binaries, but orbital solutions are also presented for red giants, yellow giants and sub-subgiants. Out to our period detection limit and within our magnitude and spatial domain, we find a global main-sequence incompleteness-corrected binary fraction of 34% +/- 3%, which rises to 70% +/- 17% in the cluster center. We derive a tidal circularization period of P_circ = 11.0 +1.1 -1.0 days. We also analyze the incompleteness-corrected distributions of binary orbital elements and masses. The period distribution rises toward longer periods. The eccentricity distribution, beyond P_circ, is consistent with a uniform distribution. The mass-ratio distribution is also consistent with a uniform distribution. Overall, these M67 binaries are closely consistent with similar binaries in the galactic field, as well as the old (7 Gyr) open cluster NGC 188. Domain walls in fractional quantum Hall ferromagnets are gapless helical one-dimensional channels formed at the boundaries of topologically distinct quantum Hall (QH) liquids. Na\"{i}vely, these helical domain walls (hDWs) constitute two counter-propagating chiral states with opposite spins. Coupled to an s-wave superconductor, helical channels are expected to lead to topological superconductivity with high order non-Abelian excitations. Here we investigate transport properties of hDWs in the $\nu=2/3$ fractional QH regime. Experimentally we found that current carried by hDWs is substantially smaller than the prediction of the na\"{i}ve model. Luttinger liquid theory of the system reveals redistribution of currents between quasiparticle charge, spin and neutral modes, and predicts the reduction of the hDW current. Inclusion of spin-non-conserving tunneling processes reconciles theory with experiment. Quantum polyspectra of up to fourth order are introduced for modeling and evaluating quantum transport measurements offering a powerful alternative to methods of the traditional full counting statistics. Experimental time-traces of the occupation dynamics of a single quantum dot are evaluated via simultaneously fitting their 2nd-, 3rd-, and 4th-order spectra. The scheme recovers the same electron tunneling and spin relaxation rates as previously obtained from an analysis of the same data in terms of factorial cumulants of the full counting statistics and waiting-time distributions. Moreover, the evaluation of time-traces via quantum polyspectra is demonstrated to be feasible also in the weak measurement regime even when quantum jumps can no longer be identified from time-traces and methods related to the full counting statistics cease to be applicable. A numerical study of a double dot system shows strongly changing features in the quantum polyspectra for the transition from the weak measurement regime to the Zeno-regime where coherent tunneling dynamics is suppressed. Quantum polyspectra thus constitute a general unifying approach to the strong and weak regime of quantum measurements with possible applications in diverse fields as nano-electronics, circuit quantum electrodynamics, spin noise spectroscopy, or quantum optics., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

We study a new dark sector signature for an atomic process of "rearrangement" in the galaxy. In this process, a hydrogen-like atomic dark matter state together with its anti-particle can rearrange to form a highly-excited bound state. This bound state will then de-excite into the ground state emitting a large number of dark photons that can be measured in experiments on Earth through their kinetic mixing with the photon. We find that for DM masses in the GeV range, the dark photons have enough energy to pass the thresholds of neutrino observatories such as Borexino and Super-Kamiokande that can probe for our scenario even when our atomic states constitute a small fraction of the total DM abundance. We demonstrate by time-resolved resonance fluorescence measurements on a single self-assembled quantum dot an internal photo-effect that emits electrons from the dot by an intra-band excitation. We find a linear dependence of the optically generated emission rate on the excitation intensity and use a rate equation model to deduce the involved rates. The emission rate is tunable over several orders of magnitude by adjusting the excitation intensity. Our findings show that a process that is well known in single atom spectroscopy (i.e. photo ionization) can also be observed in the solid state. The results also quantify an important, but mostly neglected, mechanism that may fundamentally limit the coherence times in solid-state quantum optical devices., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

HectoMAP is a dense, red-selected redshift survey to a limiting $r = 21.3$ covering 55 square degrees in a contiguous 1.5$^\circ$ strip across the northern sky. This region is also covered by the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) photometric survey enabling a range of applications that combine a dense foreground redshift survey with both strong and weak lensing maps. The median redshift of HectoMAP exceeds 0.3 throughout the survey region and the mean density of the redshift survey is $\sim 2000$ galaxies deg$^{-2}$. Here we report a total of 17,313 redshifts in a first data release covering 8.7 square degrees. We include the derived quantities D$_{n}4000$ and stellar mass for nearly all of the objects. Among these galaxies, 8117 constitute a 79\% complete red-selected subsample with $r \leq 20.5$ and an additional 4318 constitute a 68\% complete red-selected subsample with $20.5 < r < 21.3$. As examples of the strengths of HectoMAP data we discuss two applications: refined membership of redMaPPer photometrically selected clusters and a test of HSC photometric redshifts. We highlight a remarkable redMaPPer strong lensing system. All the giant planets in the solar system host a large number of natural satellites. Moons in extrasolar systems are difficult to detect, but a Neptune-sized exomoon candidate has been recently found around a Jupiter-sized planet in the Kepler-1625bsystem. Due to their relative ease of detection, hot Jupiters (HJs), which reside in close orbits around their host stars with a period of a few days, may be very good candidates to search for exomoons. It is still unknown whether the HJ population can host (or may have hosted) exomoons. One suggested formation channel for HJs is high-eccentricity migration induced by a stellar binary companion combined with tidal dissipation. Here, we investigate under which circumstances an exomoon can prevent or allow high-eccentricity migration of a HJ, and in the latter case, if the exomoon can survive the migration process. We use both semianalytic arguments, as well as direct N-body simulations including tidal interactions. Our results show that massive exomoons are efficient at preventing high-eccentricity migration. If an exomoon does instead allow for planetary migration, it is unlikely that the HJ formed can host exomoons since the moon will either spiral onto the planet or escape from it during the migration process. A few escaped exomoons can become stable planets after the Jupiter has migrated, or by tidally migrating themselves. The majority of the exomoons end up being ejected from the system or colliding with the primary star and the host planet. We introduce a new approach to the Higgs naturalness problem, where the value of the Higgs mass is tied to cosmic stability and the possibility of a large observable Universe. The Higgs mixes with the dilaton of a CFT sector whose true ground state has a large negative vacuum energy. If the Higgs VEV is non-zero and below $\mathcal{O}({\rm TeV})$, the CFT also admits a second metastable vacuum, where the expansion history of the Universe is conventional. As a result, only Hubble patches with unnaturally small values of the Higgs mass support inflation and post-inflationary expansion, while all other patches rapidly crunch. The elementary Higgs VEV driving the dilaton potential is the essence of our new solution to the hierarchy problem. The main experimental prediction is a light dilaton field in the 0.1-10 GeV range that mixes with the Higgs. Part of the viable parameter space has already been probed by measurements of rare B-meson decays, and the rest will be fully explored by future colliders and experiments searching for light, weakly-coupled particles., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We measure the central stellar velocity dispersion function for quiescent galaxies in a set of nine northern clusters in the redshift range $0.18 < z < 0.29$ and with strong lensing arcs in Hubble Space Telescope images. The velocity dispersion function links galaxies directly to their dark matter halos. From dense SDSS and MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy we identify $231 - 479$ spectroscopic members in each cluster. We derive physical properties of cluster members including redshift, $D_{n}4000$, and central stellar velocity dispersion and we include a table of these measurements for 3419 cluster members. We construct the velocity dispersion functions for quiescent galaxies with $D_{n}4000 > 1.5$ and within $R_{200}$. The cluster velocity dispersion functions all show excesses at $\sigma \gtrsim 250 km s^{-1}$ compared to the field velocity dispersion function. The velocity dispersion function slope at large velocity dispersion ($\sigma > 160 km s^{-1}$) is steeper for more massive clusters, consistent with the trend observed for cluster luminosity functions. The spatial distribution of galaxies with large velocity dispersion at radii larger than $R_{200}$ further underscores the probable major role of dry mergers in the growth of massive cluster galaxies during cluster assembly., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in the ApJ

Large driving datasets are a key component in the current development and safeguarding of automated driving functions. Various methods can be used to collect such driving data records. In addition to the use of sensor equipped research vehicles or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the use of infrastructure sensor technology offers another alternative. To minimize object occlusion during data collection, it is crucial to record the traffic situation from several perspectives in parallel. A fusion of all raw sensor data might create better conditions for multi-object detection and tracking (MODT) compared to the use of individual raw sensor data. So far, no sufficient studies have been conducted to sufficiently confirm this approach. In our work we investigate the impact of fused LiDAR point clouds compared to single LiDAR point clouds. We model different urban traffic scenarios with up to eight 64-layer LiDARs in simulation and in reality. We then analyze the properties of the resulting point clouds and perform MODT for all emerging traffic participants. Simulation is a valuable building block for the verification and validation of automated driving functions (ADF). When simulating urban driving scenarios, simulation maps are one important component. Often, the generation of those road networks is a time consuming and manual effort. Furthermore, typically many variations of a distinct junction or road section are demanded to ensure that an ADF can be validated in the process of releasing those functions to the public. Therefore, in this paper, we present a prototypical solution for a logical road network description which is easy to maintain and modify. The concept aims to be non-redundant so that changes of distinct quantities do not affect other places in the code and thus the variation of maps is straightforward. In addition, the simple definition of junctions is a focus of the work. Intersecting roads are defined separately, are then set in relation and the junction is finally generated automatically. The idea is to derive the description from a commonly used, standardized format for simulation maps in order to generate this format from the introduced logical description. We use a new spherical accretion recipe tested on N-body simulations to measure the observed mass accretion rate (MAR) of 129 clusters in the Cluster Infall Regions in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (CIRS) and in the Hectospec Cluster Survey (HeCS). We use MMT spectroscopy and deep Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) imaging to compare the spectroscopic central stellar velocity dispersion of quiescent galaxies with the effective dispersion of the dark matter halo derived from the stacked lensing signal. The spectroscopic survey (the Smithsonian Hectospec Lensing Survey) provides a sample of 4585 quiescent galaxy lenses with measured line-of-sight central stellar velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\rm SHELS}$) that is more than 85% complete for $R < 20.6$, $D_{n}4000> 1.5$ and $M_{\star} > 10^{9.5}{\rm M}_{\odot}$. The median redshift of the sample of lenses is 0.32. We measure the stacked lensing signal from the HSC deep imaging. The central stellar velocity dispersion is directly proportional to the velocity dispersion derived from the lensing $\sigma_{\rm Lens}$, $\sigma_{\rm Lens} = (1.05\pm0.15)\sigma_{\rm SHELS}+(-21.17\pm35.19)$. The independent spectroscopic and weak lensing velocity dispersions probe different scales, $\sim3$kpc and $\gtrsim$ 100 kpc, respectively, and strongly indicate that the observable central stellar velocity dispersion for quiescent galaxies is a good proxy for the velocity dispersion of the dark matter halo. Coarse geometry studies metric spaces on the large scale. Our goal here is to study dynamics from a coarse point of view. To this end we introduce a coarse version of topological entropy, suitable for unbounded metric spaces, consistent with the coarse perspective on such spaces. As is the case with the usual topological entropy, the coarse entropy measures the divergence of orbits. Following Bowen's ideas, we use $(n,\varepsilon)$-separated or $(n,\varepsilon)$-spanning sets. However, we have to let $\varepsilon$ go to infinity rather than to zero., Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure

Quantum entanglement of mechanical systems emerges when distinct objects move with such a high degree of correlation that they can no longer be described separately. Although quantum mechanics presumably applies to objects of all sizes, directly observing entanglement becomes challenging as masses increase, requiring measurement and control with a vanishingly small error. Here, using pulsed electromechanics, we deterministically entangle two mechanical drumheads with masses of 70 pg. Through nearly quantum-limited measurements of the position and momentum quadratures of both drums, we perform quantum state tomography and thereby directly observe entanglement. We introduce the stellar sample of the WIYN Open Cluster Study radial-velocity survey for the rich open cluster NGC 7789 (1.6 Gyr, [Fe/H] = +0.02). This sample lies within an 18$'$ circular radius from the cluster center (10 pc in projection, or about 2 core radii), and includes giants, red-clump stars, blue stragglers, red stragglers, sub-subgiants, and main-sequence stars down to one mag below the turnoff. Our survey began in 2005 and comprises more than 9,000 radial-velocity measurements from the Hydra Multi-Object Spectrograph on the WIYN 3.5m telescope. We identify 564 likely cluster members and present the orbital solutions for 83 cluster binary stars with periods between 1.45$\,$d and 4200$\,$d. From the main-sequence binary solutions we fit a circularization period of 8.22$^{+3.51}_{-1.35}\,$d. We calculate an incompleteness-corrected main-sequence binary frequency of 31% $\pm$ 3% for binaries with periods less than 10$^{4}$ days, similar to other WOCS open clusters of all ages. We detect a blue straggler binary frequency of 31% $\pm$ 15%, consistent with the similarly aged cluster NGC 6819., Comment: 47 pages, 16 figures. Submitted to AJ
