Photoreception in echinoderms has been studied for several years with a focus on the dermal photoreceptors of echinoids. Even though spatial vision has been proposed for this dermal photosystem, by far the most advanced system is found in a number of asteroids where an unpaired tube foot at the tip of each arm carries a proper eye, also known as the optical cushion. The eyes resemble compound eyes, except for the lack of true optics, and they typically have between 50 and 250 ommatidia each. These eyes have been known for two centuries but no visually guided behaviors were known in starfish until recently when it was shown that both Linckia laevigata and Acanthaster planci navigate their coral reef habitat using vision. Here we investigate the visual system of A. planci and find that they have active control of their visual field. The distalmost tube foot holding the eye is situated on a movable knob, which bends to adjust the vertical angle of the visual field. On the leading arms the visual field is directed 33° above the horizon, whereas the eyes on the trailing arms are directed 44° above horizontal on average. When the animal traverses an obstacle the knob bends and counteracts most of the arm bending. Further, we examined a previously described behavior, rhythmic arm elevation, and suggest that it allows the animal to scan the surroundings while preventing photoreceptor adaptation and optimizing image contrast.

In order to investigate the performance of sugarcane bagasse in the removal of nitrate from effluent subsurface drainage water, a study was conducted at the physical models laboratory of Water Sciences Engineering Faculty of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, in the summer of 2013 till the summer of 2014. A physical model with the dimensions of , which simulated the drainage trench, was utilized in this experiment. Bagasse combined with soil by 3:7 volume ratio, the combination installed as a filter besides the drainage pipe. In this study, the influent nitrate concentration was 160 mg.L-1. Influent nitrate flow was continues. At first, every two days, and then every four days the drainage pipe was sampled. Input and output drainage model solution sampled with plastic bottles. Then some parameters like Nitrate, NH4, PH and EC measured. The presence of bagasse as a carbon material in the soil caused the amount of nitrate to reduce from 160 milligrams per liter to 60 milligrams per liter; a reduction of nearly more than 60 percent. The amount of ammonium increased very little in this study. The use of sugar cane bagasse as a filter drainage, reduces the acidity of the drainage outlet. It had no effect on the electrical conductivity. Physical model results show that the clogging of the filter in this period was relatively low and carbon filter had good performance. At first, the water output velocity was high but it decreased by time. According to analytics, the difference between input and output parameters in level of five percent were significant for acidity and electrical conductivity.

Two-dimensional materials constitute an exciting platform for nonlinear optics with large nonlinearities that are tunable by gating. Hence, gate-tunable harmonic generation and intensity-dependent refraction have been observed in e.g. graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides, whose electronic structures are accurately modelled by the (massive) Dirac equation. We exploit on the simplicity of this model and demonstrate here that arbitrary nonlinear response functions follow from a simple iterative approach. The power of this approach is illustrated by analytical expressions for harmonic generation and intensity-dependent refraction, both computed up to ninth order in the pump field. Moreover, the results allow for arbitrary band gaps and gating potentials. As illustrative applications, we consider (i) gate-dependence of third- and fifth-harmonic generation in gapped and gapless graphene, (ii) intensity-dependent refractive index of graphene up to ninth order, and (iii) intensity-dependence of high-harmonic generation., 6 pages, 5 figures. Using an equation of motion (EOM) approach, we calculate excitonic properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) perturbed by an external magnetic field. We compare our findings to the widely used Wannier model for excitons in two-dimensional materials and to recent experimental results. We find good agreement between the calculated excitonic transition energies and the experimental results. In addition, we find that the exciton energies calculated using the EOM approach are slightly lower than the ones calculated using the Wannier model. It is well established that external electrostatic fields modify the electronic structure and optical response of materials. Modifications of the optical response of quasi-one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) depend strongly on the direction of the electrostatic field. While transverse fields primarily lift degeneracies in the band structure, longitudinal fields are responsible for considerable nonperturbative Franz-Keldysh effects. Also, electric fields break the inversion symmetry of GNRs and result in strong electric field-induced second harmonic generation. In this work, we study field-induced modifications of the linear and nonlinear optical response of narrow and wide semiconducting armchair GNRs (AGNRs). Both finite and infinite AGNRs with and without electrostatic fields are studied and length convergence is analyzed. Similarly, the width convergence of wide AGNRs to the two-dimensional graphene limit with and without longitudinal fields is investigated.

Generation of photocurrents in semiconducting materials requires dissociation of excitons into free charge carriers. While thermal agitation is sufficient to induce dissociation in most bulk materials, an additional push is required to induce efficient dissociation of the strongly bound excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Recently, static in-plane electric fields have proven to be a promising candidate. In the present paper, we introduce a numerical procedure, based on exterior complex scaling, capable of computing field-induced exciton dissociation rates for a wider range of field strengths than previously reported in the literature. We present both Stark shifts and dissociation rates for excitons in various TMDs calculated within the Mott-Wannier model. Here, we find that the field-induced dissociation rate is strongly dependent on the dielectric screening environment. Furthermore, applying weak-field asymptotic theory to the Keldysh potential, we are able to derive an analytical expression for exciton dissociation rates in the weak-field region.

Fan worms (Annelida: Sabellidae) possess compound eyes and other photoreceptors on their radiolar feeding tentacles. These eyes putatively serve as an alarm system that alerts the worm to encroaching threats, eliciting a rapid defensive retraction into their protective tube. The structure and independent evolutionary derivation of these radiolar eyes make them a fascinating target for exploring the emergence of new sensory systems and visually guided behaviours. However, little is known about their physiology and how this impacts their function. Here we present electroretinogram recordings from the radiolar eyes of the fan worm Acromegalomma vesiculosum (Montagu, 1813). We examine their spectral sensitivity along with their dynamic range and temporal resolution. Our results show that they possess one class of photoreceptors with a single visual pigment peaking in the blue-green part of the spectrum around 510 nm, which matches the dominant wavelengths in their shallow coastal habitats. We found the eyes to have a rather high temporal resolution with a critical flicker fusion frequency around 35 Hz. The high temporal resolution of this response is ideally suited for detecting rapidly moving predators but also necessitates downstream signal processing to filter out caustic wave flicker. This study provides a fundamental understanding of how these eyes function. Furthermore, these findings emphasise a set of dynamic physiological principles that are well-suited for governing a multi-eyed startle response in coastal aquatic habitats.

A Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) scheme with Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs) is considered for solving the time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation, and simulate the ionization of an electron initially bound to a one-dimensional $\delta$-potential, when applying a strong time-oscillating electric field. The performance of PMLs based on different absorption functions are compared, where we find slowly growing functions to be preferable. PMLs are shown to be able to reduce the computational domain, and thus the required numerical resources, by several orders of magnitude. This is demonstrated by testing the proposed method against an FDTD approach without PMLs and a very large computational domain. We further show that PMLs outperform the well known Exterior Complex Scaling (ECS) technique for short-range potentials when implemented in FDTD, though ECS remains superior for long-range potentials. The accuracy of the method is furthermore demonstrated by comparing with known numerical and analytical results for the $\delta$-potential.

A quantum mechanical approach and local response theory are applied to study plasmons propagating in nanometer-thin gold slabs sandwiched between different dielectrics. The metal slab supports two different kinds of modes, classified as long-range and short-range plasmons. Quantum spill-out is found to significantly increase the imaginary part of their mode indices, and, surprisingly, even for slabs wide enough to approach bulk the increase is 20%. This is explained in terms of enhanced plasmonic absorption, which mainly takes place at narrow peaks located near the slab surface.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy is the standard of care for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer, yet valid circulating biomarkers are lacking. We aimed at systematically reviewing the literature of cell-free DNA and locally advanced rectal cancer.METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed. We retrieved papers reporting a correlation between a clinical outcome and cell-free DNA for patients receiving chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer.RESULTS: We included nine studies of a total of 615 patients. Only single-arm studies were identified, analyzing either the total level of cell-free DNA or tumor-specific DNA. Despite differences in the methodology and outcomes, eight of the nine studies showed a correlation between cell-free DNA and a clinical outcome.CONCLUSIONS: Cell-free DNA might hold prognostic and predictive information for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer receiving preoperative chemoradiotherapy; although, firm conclusions are limited by the heterogeneity in this field.

Animals relying on vision as their main sensory modality reserve a large part of their central nervous system to appropriately navigate their environment. In general, neural involvement correlates to the complexity of the visual system and behavioural repertoire. In humans, one third of the available neural capacity supports our single-chambered general-purpose eyes, whereas animals with less elaborate visual systems need less computational power, and generally have smaller brains, and thereby lack in visual behaviour. As a consequence, both traditional model animals (mice, zebrafish, and flies) and more experimentally tractable animals (Hydra, Planaria, and C. elegans) cannot contribute to our understanding of systems-level visual information processing-a Goldilocks case of too big and too small.However, one animal, the box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora, possesses a rather complex visual system, displays multiple visual behaviours, yet processes visual information by means of a relatively simple central nervous system. This-just right-model system could not only provide information on how visual stimuli are processed through distinct combinations of neural circuitry but also provide a processing algorithm for extracting specific information from a complex visual scene.

A gap plasmon is an electromagnetic wave propagating in a gap between two noble metal surfaces. Such gap plasmons have previously been studied using only a classical description of the noble metals, but this model fails and shows unphysical behavior for sub-nanometer gaps. To overcome this problem quantum spill-out is included in this paper by applying Density-Functional Theory (DFT), such that the electron density is smooth across the interfaces between metal and air. The mode index of a gap plasmon propagating in the gap between the two metal surfaces is calculated from the smooth electron density, and in the limit of vanishing gap width the mode index is found to converge properly to the refractive index of bulk metal. When neglecting quantum spill out in this limit the mode index shows unphysical behavior and diverges instead. The mode index is applied to calculate the reflectance of an ultrasharp groove array in silver, as gaps of a few nm are found in the bottom of such grooves. At these positions the gap plasmon field is highly delocalized implying that it mostly exists in the bulk silver region where absorption takes place. Surprisingly, when the bottom width is a few nm and the effect of spill out at a first glance seems to be negligible, strong absorption is found to take place 1-2 Å from the groove walls as a consequence of the dielectric function being almost zero at these positions. Hence quantum spill out is found to significantly lower the reflectance of such groove arrays in silver.

Bessel functions play an important role for quantum states in spherical and cylindrical geometries. In cases of perfect confinement, the energy of Schrodinger and massless Dirac fermions is determined by the zeros and intersections of Bessel functions, respectively. In an external electric field, standard perturbation theory therefore expresses the polarizability as a sum over these zeros or intersections. Both non-relativistic and relativistic polarizabilities can be calculated analytically, however. Hence, by equating analytical expressions to perturbation expansions, several sum rules for the zeros and intersections of Bessel functions emerge.

We develop a resummation approach based on Meijer-G functions and apply it to approximate the Borel sum of divergent series and the Borel-Écalle sum of resurgent transseries in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory (QFT). The proposed method is shown to vastly outperform the conventional Borel-Padé and Borel-Padé-Écalle summation methods. The resulting Meijer-G approximants are easily parametrized by means of a hypergeometric ansatz and can be thought of as a generalization to arbitrary order of the Borel-hypergeometric method [Mera et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 143001 (2015)]. Here we demonstrate the accuracy of this technique in various examples from quantum mechanics and QFT, traditionally employed as benchmark models for resummation, such as zero-dimensional ϕ4 theory; the quartic anharmonic oscillator; the calculation of critical exponents for the N-vector model; ϕ4 with degenerate minima; self-interacting QFT in zero dimensions; and the summation of one- and two-instanton contributions in the quantum-mechanical double-well problem.

Cubozoans have the most intricate visual apparatus within Cnidaria. It comprises four identical sensory structures, the rhopalia, each of which holds six eyes of four morphological types. Two of these eyes are camera-type eyes that are, in many ways, similar to the vertebrate eye. The visual input is used to control complex behaviors, such as navigation and obstacle avoidance, and is processed by an elaborate rhopalial nervous system. Several studies have examined the rhopalial nervous system, which, despite a radial symmetric body plan, is bilaterally symmetrical, connecting the two sides of the rhopalium through commissures in an extensive neuropil. The four rhopalia are interconnected by a nerve ring situated in the oral margin of the bell, and together these structures constitute the cubozoan central nervous system. Cnidarians have excellent regenerative capabilities, enabling most species to regenerate large body areas or body parts, and some species can regenerate completely from just a few hundred cells. Here we test whether cubozoans are capable of regenerating the rhopalia, despite the complexity of the visual system and the rhopalial nervous system. The results show that the rhopalia are readily regrown after amputation and have developed most, if not all, neural elements within two weeks. Using electrophysiology, we investigated the functionality of the regrown rhopalia and found that they generated pacemaker signals and that the lens eyes showed a normal response to light. Our findings substantiate the amazing regenerative ability in Cnidaria by showing here the complex sensory system of Cubozoa, a model system proving to be highly applicable in studies of neurogenesis.

Plasmons in ultranarrow metal gaps are highly sensitive to the electron density profile at the metal surfaces. Using a quantum mechanical approach and assuming local response, we study the effects of electron spill-out on gap plasmons and reflectance from ultrasharp metal grooves.We demonstrate that the mode index of ultranarrow gap plasmons converges to the bulk refractive index in the limit of vanishing gap and, thereby, rectify the unphysical divergence found in classical models. Surprisingly, spill-out also significantly increases the plasmonic absorption for few-nanometer gaps and lowers the reflectance from arrays of ultrasharp metal grooves. These findings are explained in terms of enhanced gap plasmon absorption taking place inside the gap 1–2 °A from the walls and delocalization near the groove bottom. Reflectance calculations taking spill-out into account are shown to be inmuch better agreement with measurements compared with classical models.

The magneto-optical response of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) is studied theoretically, including excitonic effects. Both diagonal and nondiagonal response functions are obtained and employed to compute Faraday rotation spectra. For single-walled CNTs in a parallel field, the results show field-dependent splitting of the exciton absorption peaks caused by brightening a dark exciton state. Similarly, for GNRs in a perpendicular magnetic field, we observe a field-dependent shift of the exciton peaks and the emergence of an absorption peak above the energy gap. Results show that excitonic effects play a significant role in the optical response of both materials, particularly for the off-diagonal tensor elements.

Asteroids, starfish, are important members of the macro-benthos in almost all marine environments including the deep sea. Starfish are in general assumed to be largely olfactory guided, but recent studies have shown that two tropical shallow water species rely on vision alone to find their habitat at short distances. Their compound eyes are found at the tip of each arm and they vary little between examined species. Still, nothing is known about vision in the species found in the aphotic zone of the deep sea or whether they even have eyes. Here, 13 species of starfish from Greenland waters, covering a depth range from shallow waters to the deep sea below 1000 m, were examined for the presence of eyes and optical and morphological examinations were used to estimate the quality of vision. Further, species found in the aphotic zone below 320 m were checked for bioluminescence. All species, except the infaunalCtenodiscus crispatus, had eyes, and two were found to be bioluminescent. Interestingly, one of the species found in the aphotic zone,Novodinia americana, had close to the highest spatial resolution known for starfish eyes along with being bioluminescent. Accordingly, we hypothesize that this species communicates visually using bioluminescent flashes putatively for reproductive purposes. Other species have greatly enhanced sensitivity with few large ommatidia but at the sacrifice of spatial resolution. The discovery of eyes in deep-sea starfish with a huge variation in optical quality and sensitivity indicates that their visual ecology also differs greatly.

We compute the nonlinear optical response of doped mono- and bilayer graphene using the full dispersion based on tight-binding models. The response is derived with the density matrix formalism using the length gauge and is valid for any periodic system, with arbitrary doping. By collecting terms that define effective nonlinear response tensors, we identify all nonlinear Drude-like terms (up to third-order) and show that all additional spurious divergences present in the induced current vanish. The nonlinear response of graphene comprises a large Drude-like divergence and three resonances that are tightly connected with transitions occurring in the vicinity of the Fermi level. The analytic solution derived using the Dirac approximation captures accurately the first- and third-order responses in graphene, even at very high doping levels. The quadratic response of gapped graphene is also strongly enhanced by doping, even for systems with small gaps such as commensurate structures of graphene on SiC. The nonlinear response of bilayer graphene is significantly richer, combining the resonances that stem from doping with its intrinsic strong low-energy resonances., Revised manuscript 18 pages, 6 figures

Frailty is characterized by loss of biological reserves across multiple systems and associated with increased risks of adverse outcomes. A Frailty Index (FI) constructed using items from the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) has been validated in geriatric medicine settings to estimate the level of frailty. Traditionally, the CGA used a paper form and the CGA-based FI calculation was a manual process. Here, we reported building of an electronic version of the assessment on personal computers (PC), i.e., standalone eFI-CGA, to benefit frailty assessment at points of care. The eFI-CGA was implemented as a software tool on the WinForms platform. It automated the FI calculation by counting deficits accumulation across multiple domains assessing medical conditions, cognition, balance, and dependency of activities of daily living. Debugging, testing, and optimization were performed to enhance the software performance with respect to automation accuracy (processing algorithm), friendly user interface (user manual and feedback), and data quality control (missing data and value constraints). Systematically-designed simulation dataset and anonymous real-world cases were both applied. The optimized assessment tool resulted in fast and convenient conductance of the CGA, and a 100% accuracy rate of the eFI-CGA automation for up to four decimals. The stand-alone eFI-CGA implementation has provided a PC-based software tool for use by geriatricians and primary and acute care providers, benefiting early detection and management of frailty at points of care for older adults.

Si is an excellent photo-absorber for use in dual-band-gap photoelectrochemical water splitting. We investigate photoanodes with n+pp+-Si configuration under back-side illumination, which is suited to work in a tandem device stack. A co-sputtered NiCoOx film coupled to the Si was used as a protective catalyst for the water oxidation reaction in 1 m KOH. The sample showed a high photocurrent (21 mA cm−2) under red-light illumination (38.6 mW cm−2). Long-term stability testing showed a gradual decrease of activity in the beginning, and then the activity increased, yielding a cathodic shift of the onset voltage (>50 mV), likely owing to the divergent response of Ni and Co to the Fe present in KOH. Once the activity of the sample stabilized, no further degradation was observed for the following 6 days, indicating that the demonstrated back-illuminated photoanode configuration can be considered a promising architecture for use as a bottom cell of the tandem water-splitting device under alkaline conditions.

The H-2/D-2 exchange reaction was studied on mono-disperse Pt-8 clusters in a mu-reactor. The chemical activity was studied at temperatures varying from room temperature to 180 degrees C using mass spectrometry. It was found that minute amounts of O-2 in the gas stream increased the chemical activity significantly. XPS and ISS before and after reaction suggest little or no sintering during reaction. A reaction pathway is suggested based on DFT. H-2 desorption is identified as the rate- limiting step and O-2 is confirmed as the source of the increased activity. The binding energy of platinum atoms in a SiO2 supported Pt-8 cluster is found to be comparable to the interatomic binding energies of bulk platinum, underlining the stability of the model system.

Si is an excellent absorber material for use in photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. Only a few studies have been done using Si in alkaline electrolyte for hydrogen evolution due to its poor chemical stability in high pH electrolyte, indicating that a chemically stable protection layer is essential. Here we investigate thin TiO2 films deposited by high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) as a protection layer for a p-type silicon photocathode for photoelectrochemical H2 evolution in a high pH electrolyte. The X-ray reflectometry analysis reveals that the HiPIMS process provides improved film density for TiO2 films (4.15 g/cm3), and consequently results in a significantly less corroded Si surface. The Si photocathode protected by the HiPIMS grown TiO2 film along with Pt as co-catalyst produced a photocurrent onset potential of ~0.5 V vs. RHE in 1 M KOH and showed a 4% decay over 24 h in KOH. In contrast, the sample with the TiO2 deposited using conventional DC sputtering technique of similar thickness shows 20% loss in photocurrent for the same time interval. Considering the fact that the experiments were carried out not in the cleanroom, much less corrosion loss can be obtained if done in dust-free condition. Hence, these results suggest the HiPIMS technique as an improved approach for the protection of photoelectrodes, which are unstable in alkaline solution.

Stabilizing efficient photoabsorbers for solar water splitting has recently shown significant progress with the development of various protection layers. Suitable protection layers for tandem devices should be conductive, transparent, and stable in strongly acidic or alkaline solutions. This paper shows that under certain conditions n-type semiconductors, such as TiO2, can be used as protection layers for Si-based photoanodes. It also provides evidence that even in a photoanode assembly TiO2 is conducting only electrons (not holes as in p-type protection layers), and therefore TiO2 can be described as a simple ohmic contact. This renders n-type semiconductors, such as TiO2, to be versatile and simple protection layers, which can be used for photoanodes and as previously shown for photocathodes. The ohmic behavior of n-type TiO2 in a Si/TiO2–photoanode assembly is demonstrated under dark and illuminated conditions by performing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and using the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox couple. ...

Recent research has focused on the utility of cell free DNA (cfDNA) in serum and plasma for clinical application, especially in oncology. The literature holds promise of cfDNA as a valuable tumour marker to be used for treatment selection, monitoring and follow-up. The results, however, are diverging due to methodological differences with lack of standardisation and definition of sensitivity. The new biological information has not yet come into routine use. The present study presents external standardisation by spiking with non-human DNA fragments to control for loss of DNA during sample preparation and measurement. It also suggests a method to control for admixture of DNA from normal lymphocytes by utilizing the unique immunoglobulin gene rearrangement in the B-cells. The results show that this approach improves the quality of the analysis and lowers the risk of falsely increased values. In conclusion we suggest a new method to improve the accuracy of cfDNA measurements easily incorporated in the current technology.

Within cubozoans, a few species have developed a sexual reproduction system including mating and internal fertilization. One species, Copula sivickisi, is found in a large area of the indo pacific. They have separate sexes and when mature males and females meet they entangle their tentacles and the males transfer a sperm package, a spermatozeugmata, which is ingested by the female fertilizing her eggs internally. After 2-3 days, the females lay an embryo strand that sticks to the substrate and after another 2-3 days, the fully developed larvae leave the strand. We have examined the ultrastructure of the gonads and spermatozeugmata to look for structural adaptations to this specialized way of reproduction and understand how the fertilization takes place. Surprisingly, we discovered that the male gonads were heavily packed with cnidocytes of the isorhiza type and that they are transferred to the spermatozeugmata. The spermatozeugmata does not dissolve in the female gastrovascular cavity but is attached to the female gonad probably using the isorhizas. Here, the sperm cells are partly digested and the nuclei are released. The actual fertilization seems to happen through phagocytosis of the released nuclei by the epithelial cells. The female gonads are likewise packed with cnidocytes but of the eurytele type. They do not mature inside the female and putatively serve to protect the developing larvae once the embryo strand is laid. This specialized way of fertilization is to our knowledge novel and so is this first account of cnidocytes being directly involved in cnidarian reproduction.

The electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution has been evaluated for radial-junction n(+)p-Si microwire (MW) arrays with Pt or cobalt phosphide, CoP, nanoparticulate catalysts in contact with 0.50 M H2SO4(aq). The CoP-coated (2.0 mg cm(-2)) n(+)p-Si MW photocathodes were stable for over 12 h of continuous operation and produced an open-circuit photovoltage (Voc) of 0.48 V, a light-limited photocurrent density (Jph) of 17 mA cm(-2), a fill factor (ff) of 0.24, and an ideal regenerative cell efficiency (ηIRC) of 1.9% under simulated 1 Sun illumination. Pt-coated (0.5 mg cm(-2)) n(+)p-Si MW-array photocathodes produced Voc = 0.44 V, Jph = 14 mA cm(-2), ff = 0.46, and η = 2.9% under identical conditions. Thus, the MW geometry allows the fabrication of photocathodes entirely comprised of earth-abundant materials that exhibit performance comparable to that of devices that contain Pt.
