353. Navigating Contradictory Communities of Practice in Learning to Teach for Social Justice
- Author

Flores, Maria Timmons
- Abstract
In this article, I explore the contradictions that four new teachers experienced as their commitments to social justice collide with urban school culture. Framed within Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger's (1999) theory of situated learning and development concepts of identity, practice, and relationships illustrate how teachers' ideals are challenged as socializing features of two communities of practice--the universities and schools--intersect in new teachers' development. This research contributes empirical evidence of the application of critical multicultural teacher preparation into practice, a cultural representation of how educational inequities are reproduced or disrupted in the situated contexts of urban schools, an application of Lave and Wenger's theory of Legitimate Peripheral Participation that incorporates formal and informal education across multiple activity settings, and a call for collaborative communities of practice that support teachers' situated learning in creating transformative practices.

- Abstract
This paper reports on research aimed at investigating the ways in which teachers in Portugal and in England are experiencing recent changes in the policy environment which have affected their sense of professionalism and their professional identity. Data were collected through questionnaires and focus group interviews. Findings suggest the existence of some strengths in teachers' views on their professionalism, namely the importance of vocationalism, continuing learning and collaborative cultures, the relevance of project-oriented work at school and an integrated perspective of the curriculum. However, a number of limitations also emerged, such as feelings of ambivalence and conflict, associated with increased bureaucracy, qualities of school leadership, cultures of loneliness and the lack of understanding and ownership of the process of change. - Abstract
This paper explores the extent to which students and teachers are able to acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses of a shift in the approach to teaching and learning from a traditional, teacher-centred perspective towards project- and learner-centred education. It reports on a case study aimed at exploring students' and teachers' perceptions of a project-led education course carried out at an engineering course at a Portuguese university. Data were collected through questionnaires, letters and interviews. Findings suggest, in spite of some negative experiences and final results for some of the students, a clear recognition of the benefits of a project-based approach to both the teaching staff as well as the students. Both are able to identify interdisciplinarity, high student motivation and the acquisition of soft skills as key features of project-led education.

The Mouse Genome Database (MGD; http://www.informatics.jax.org) is the community model organism knowledgebase for the laboratory mouse, a widely used animal model for comparative studies of the genetic and genomic basis for human health and disease. MGD is the authoritative source for biological reference data related to mouse genes, gene functions, phenotypes and mouse models of human disease. MGD is the primary source for official gene, allele, and mouse strain nomenclature based on the guidelines set by the International Committee on Standardized Nomenclature for Mice. MGD’s biocuration scientists curate information from the biomedical literature and from large and small datasets contributed directly by investigators. In this report we describe significant enhancements to the content and interfaces at MGD, including (i) improvements in the Multi Genome Viewer for exploring the genomes of multiple mouse strains, (ii) inclusion of many more mouse strains and new mouse strain pages with extended query options and (iii) integration of extensive data about mouse strain variants. We also describe improvements to the efficiency of literature curation processes and the implementation of an information portal focused on mouse models and genes for the study of COVID-19.

- Abstract
This paper focuses on the perceptions of public school/school clusters’ principals about the policies and practices of external assessment, particularly in regard to low-stakes national tests. Data are drawn from a broader research project which involved, in the first phase, semi-structured interviews with 25 principals. Findings point to the prevalence of a rather negative view of the low-stakes national tests when compared with national high stakes exams. The participants are skeptical about the relevance and effectiveness of the low-stakes national tests and about the commitment and engagement from the part of students, families and even teachers. They also question the timing of REPA and RIPA reports and they undervalue their formative potential., Neste artigo analisamos as perceções dos diretores de agrupamento/escolas não agrupadas acerca das políticas e práticas de avaliação externa, mormente no que concerne às provas de aferição.

360. Being a Novice Teacher in Two Different Settings: Struggles, Continuities, and Discontinuities
- Author

Flores, Maria Assuncao
- Abstract
Drawing upon empirical research, the article explores the ways in which a cohort of novice teachers learned and developed over a 2-year period. It examines the interplay of personal and contextual influences on teachers' development over time and on the (trans)formation of their professional identities. A combination of methods for data collection was used. Findings suggested that novices felt overwhelmed by the amount and variety of duties that they were expected to perform at school. This, along with the lack of support and guidance, forced them into "learning while doing." Most teachers developed according to a narrow and individual perspective, which was accompanied by a shift from a more inductive and student-centered approach to a more traditional one. However, some teachers seem to have developed in positive ways over time. Personal biographies associated with perceptions of school culture and leadership help to explain both similarities and differences among teachers. Implications of the findings for teacher education and induction are discussed.

361. Contexts Which Shape and Reshape New Teachers' Identities: A Multi-Perspective Study

- Abstract
This paper presents the major findings of a longitudinal study of teachers' professional identities in the early years of teaching. It analyzes key influences upon the ways in which new teachers' identities are shaped and reshaped over time. Through their own perceptions, analyses of the school cultures in which they work and their pupils' views it reveals how the interplay between contextual, cultural and biographical factors affects their teaching practices. Teachers' personal and professional histories and pre-service training, alongside issues of school culture and leadership, emerge as stronger mediating influences (than previous literature suggests) in determining the kinds and relative stability and instability of professional identities which teachers develop in the early years of teaching and thus the kinds of teachers they become and their effectiveness.

- Abstract
Urbanization transforms environments in ways that alter biological evolution. We examined whether urban environmental change drives parallel evolution by sampling 110,019 white clover plants from 6169 populations in 160 cities globally. Plants were assayed for a Mendelian antiherbivore defense that also affects tolerance to abiotic stressors. Urban-rural gradients were associated with the evolution of clines in defense in 47% of cities throughout the world. Variation in the strength of clines was explained by environmental changes in drought stress and vegetation cover that varied among cities. Sequencing 2074 genomes from 26 cities revealed that the evolution of urban-rural dines was best explained by adaptive evolution, but the degree of parallel adaptation varied among cities. Our results demonstrate that urbanization leads to adaptation at a global scale.

- Abstract
Among the features of cisplatin chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy are chronic pain and innocuous mechanical hypersensitivity. The complete etiology of the latter remains unknown. Here, we show that cisplatin targets a heterogeneous population of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive (TH+) primary afferent dorsal root ganglion neurons (DRGNs) in mice, determined using single-cell transcriptome and electrophysiological analyses. TH+ DRGNs regulate innocuous mechanical sensation through C-low threshold mechanoreceptors. A differential assessment of wild-type and vitamin E deficient TH+ DRGNs revealed heterogeneity and specific functional phenotypes. The TH+ DRGNs comprise; fast-adapting eliciting one action potential (AP; 1-AP), moderately-adapting (≥2-APs), in responses to square-pulse current injection, and spontaneously active (SA). Cisplatin increased the input resistance and AP frequency but reduced the temporal coding feature of 1-AP and ≥2-APs neurons. By contrast, cisplatin has no measurable effect on the SA neurons. Vitamin E reduced the cisplatin-mediated increased excitability but did not improve the TH+ neuron temporal coding properties. Cisplatin mediates its effect by targeting outward K+ current, likely carried through K2P18.1 (Kcnk18), discovered through the differential transcriptome studies and heterologous expression. Studies show a potential new cellular target for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and implicate the possible neuroprotective effects of vitamin E in cisplatin chemotherapy.

- Abstract

366. Mapping New Teacher Change: Findings from a Two-Year Study
- Author
-
Flores, Maria Assuncao
- Abstract
This article reports on findings from research aimed at examining new teachers' change over the first two years of teaching through their own perceptions, the perceptions of their students and analyses of the school culture in which they worked. Overall, a general pattern was found: most teachers developed according to a narrow, individual and classroom-oriented perspective, which was accompanied by a shift from a more inductive and student-centred approach to teaching towards a more traditional and teacher-centred one. However, it was found that four teachers did develop and change in positive ways over time. Issues of personal biography associated with perceptions of school culture and leadership explain both similarities and differences amongst teachers. Implications of the findings for teacher socialisation and induction are discussed. (Contains 3 figures.)

367. How Do Teachers Learn in the Workplace? Findings from an Empirical Study Carried out in Portugal

Flores, Maria Assuncao
- Abstract
This article reports on research aimed at investigating teachers' views on their professional learning and its influencing factors. Data were gathered by means of a questionnaire (n = 627) and semi-structured interviews with teachers and head teachers in 18 schools located in northern Portugal. Findings suggest that the more formal contexts of professional learning (such as Initial Training, teaching practice and Inservice Education) are undervalued, that a context-specific and "on-the-job" nature of learning, which was associated with the organisational and structural constraints of the workplace, prevailed, and that the processes of learning were mainly idiosyncratic and classroom-centred. Issues of personal motivation and learning as a practical and trial-and-error process emerged as the most distinctive features between new and more experienced teachers. Implications for the role of schools in the continuing professional development of teachers are discussed. (Contains 4 tables and 2 notes.)

Flores, Maria Assuncao
- Abstract
This article presents the major findings of a small-scale study of recent changes in the elementary school curriculum in Portugal and their implications for teachers' sense of professionalism. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires in a suburban elementary school. Findings suggest the emergence of contradictory trends in teacher professionalism: on the one hand, teachers acknowledge the flexibility and the local logic in the management of school curriculum in which they play a key role; on the other, they highlight issues of bureaucracy and 'imposed collaboration', along with the lack of support and guidance to perform their new roles at school. Challenge, ambiguity and tension are key words in defining Portuguese teachers' sense of professionalism in times of change.

INTRODUCTION: Children's exposure to parental tobacco smoke is a public health concern. Guiding parents towards smoking cessation plays a key role in protecting the child's health. This study aims to evaluate parents' smoking habits and their availability for a smoking cessation intervention in the context of a pediatric consultation or hospitalization. METHODS: This was a prospective study conducted between January 2020 and October 2021 in a level two hospital in the central region of Portugal. Parents of all children hospitalized or seen in a pediatric consultation unit during this period were approached consecutively and fulfilled an anonymous survey about their smoking habits, nicotine dependence and motivation to quit smoking. RESULTS: A total of 133 questionnaires were evaluated, 39 from hospitalization and 94 from consultation. Smoking exposure was 39.8% in the study sample. Among smoking parents, 57% of parents at inpatient and 23% at outpatient consultation were probably in the preparation phase for smoking cessation. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric hospitalization and outpatient consultation may be excellent opportunities for the implementation of measures to raise awareness and intervene in parental smoking cessation. - Abstract
Drawing upon empirical data, this article explores the ways in which school culture and leadership impact on new teachers' learning in the workplace. The study was carried out over a two-year period and involved a cohort of 14 new teachers and 18 elementary and secondary schools. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the new teachers and headteachers and a questionnaire which was also administered to all staff in each of the schools. Findings suggest the key role of school culture and leadership in (re)shaping teachers' response to the institutional and situational constraints of the workplace and their learning and socialization process at school. Implications for induction and the role of schools in fostering teacher professional growth are discussed. (Contains 3 notes.)

- Abstract
Investigates the perceived effects of educational reform among secondary school teachers in England and Portugal, focusing on teachers' experiences in these two communities, which are in different transition phases. By doing so, it is possible, even within the different cultures, to identify common problems teachers experience within the reforms and their management which challenge existing identities, values, and commitments and are creating new forms of compliant professionalism. Medical / Microbiology - Abstract
Streptomycetes exhibit genetic multiplicity, like many other microorganisms, and redundancy occurs in many of the genes involved in carbon metabolism. The enzymes of the glycolytic pathway presenting the greatest multiplicity were phosphofructokinase, fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and pyruvate kinase. The genes that encode citrate synthase and subunits of the succinate dehydrogenase complex are the ones that show the greatest multiplicity, while in the phosphoenolpyruvate-pyruvate-oxaloacetate node, only malic enzymes and pyruvate phosphate dikinase present two copies in some Streptomyces. The extra DNA from these multiple gene copies can be more than 50 kb, and the question arises whether all of these genes are transcribed and translated. As far as we know, there is few information about the transcription of these genes in any of this Streptomyces, nor if any of the activities that are encoded by a single gene could be limiting both for growth and for the formation of precursors of the antibiotics produced by these microorganisms. Therefore, it is important to study the transcription and translation of genes involved in carbon metabolism in antibiotic-producing Streptomyces growing on various sugars.

The study analyzes the possibility of a management model of Conservation Units (CU), in four CUs, created in the mesoregion of the Northeast of Pará, (Maracanã Extractivist Reserve Marine, Campo das Mangabas, Sustainable Development Reserve, Refúgio de Vida Silvestre Fr. Sérgio Tonetto and APA- Algodoal-Maiandeua). It is questioned if the proposal can represent an advance from the point of view of environmental and community management of multi-used resources. The methodology is based on a qualitative, analytical and exploratory approach, through documentary and bibliographic research, for a survey of theoretical-conceptual and normative material, with the theory of public action as theoretical support. About the results, the feasibility of the mosaic proposal was showed, with the necessity to rethink the model currently applied to adapt the management of CU to the local reality, within the perspective of mobilization of internal and external actors, since as that the challenges are great for the management of the territory from the perspective of mosaics in Maracanã., El estudio analiza la posibilidad de un modelo de gestión en cuatro unidades de conservación de la naturaleza (UC), creadas en la mesorregión del Nordeste de Pará, (Reserva Extractivista Marina Maracaná, Reserva de Desarrollo Sostenible Campo de Mangabas, Refugio de Vida Salvaje Padre Sergio Tonetto y Área de Protección Ambiental Algodoal-Maiandeua).

Background: Obesity in children and adolescents has increased exponentially around the world. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a higher pediatric obesity rate. The excess adipose tissue generates a dysregulation of adiponectin, ghrelin, and leptin, among others. Metabolic alterations can develop cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemias, arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, sleep disorders, and higher risk of COVID-19 severity. Obesity has different therapeutic approaches such as behavioral weight loss programs, pharmacologic treatments, and surgical procedures. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment are important to decrease the mortality in obesity among pediatric population.
