Fishing is an essential and profitable means of livelihood among peoples all over the world especially those residing in countries located along the coastal areas because food from the sea is good for human consumption and every harvest generates employment as well. In the Philippines, fishing plays an important part in the livelihood of Filipino fisher folks particularly on the reduction of poverty, especially in the different coastline communities of the country. It is indeed advantageous but even though how beneficial it may be, still, problems affecting fishermen could never be avoided. This study delves in the socioeconomic status and environmental problems affecting fishermen in the coastal barangays of Laoang. This applies a proportionate sampling technique in answering the survey questionnaire on the socioeconomic status and environmental problems of the respondents. Findings revealed that the respondents were 41 to 50 years old with an income of 5,000-10,000, with 1 to 5 family members residing in a combined nipa and concrete house. As to the environmental problems it was found out that declining fish catch, improper garbage disposal, weather condition, climate change came out as very serious problems. As to the test of a relationship, findings showed that the profile of the respondents in terms of age, civil status, number of households, highest educational attainment, monthly household income, fishing gear, and environmental problems were found to have significant relationship to the environmental problems affecting fishermen. As to the recommendations, very serious problems together with the serious, moderately serious, and slightly serious ones met by the residents in the shorelines of the studied barangays should be addressed by the local government unit of the municipality of Laoang, Northern Samar. It is important to incorporate fisher motivations and behavior into fisheries management models. Incorrect behavioral assumptions may yield ineffective incentives or interventions or even produce unintended consequences. To understand fisher behavior in a developing country, we surveyed 93 Indonesian snapper fishers. Results suggest they consider competing aspects such as income, personal reputation, and sociocultural norms when deciding where and what to fish; they update beliefs about location, bountifulness, and catchability of target fish stocks through direct observations, inferences over geographical similarities, and social interactions with other fishers, and they evaluate satisfaction economically as well as socially. Information sharing and social knowledge are likely port-specific, representing local sociocultural norms rather than being related to vessel size, target catch, or other demographics. The prevalence of information sharing and imitation patterns suggests that fisher decision-making in Indonesian snapper fisheries has a significant sociocultural component. Fishing on the coasts of Berbería has been vital for the supply of the population of the Canary Islands since the 15th century. Canarian fishermen complained about the abuses of Portuguese warships, and Andalusian fishermen contributed to the growth of fishing in the area. Genoese and Flemish merchants benefited from this business, but there were risks such as shipwrecks and acts of piracy. Despite the obstacles, Canarian fishermen continued to supply the population of the Canary Islands. The article describes the working conditions and life of fishermen in the Canary Islands during the 17th and 18th centuries, highlighting the constant dangers they faced and the difference in food between poor fishermen and the more powerful ones. It also mentions King Carlos III's attempt to establish a settlement for Canarian fishermen on the African coast, but it was rejected by the Sultan of Morocco. The usefulness of fishing permits granted to Spaniards is questioned due to the lack of security in the area. The article also highlights the neglect of the Canary Islands in subsequent agreements and the lack of changes in relationships until the Africa War of 1859-1860. Small cetacean bycatch in artisanal fisheries and deep-sea fishing operations is a serious and persistent threat to conservation in coastal communities in Ghana. We assessed the bycatch and management of small cetaceans in four coastal communities by administering 73 questionnaires to fishers and recording their catches. Our findings show that dolphin feeding habits, gear attributes and habitat use of targeted finfish species were the main factors driving bycatch of small cetaceans in Ghana. Gear damage and reduced catches were among the effects of bycatch reported by fishers. In addition to direct consumption of small cetacean meat, fishers use them as bait in shark-fishing activities. Our results suggest the livelihood of over 70% of fishers will be threatened if management measures are implemented. Fishers were unaware of the Wildlife Division that manages small cetaceans in Ghana. We recommended that a co-management approach between the government and locals should be adopted when developing and implementing measures for the conservation of small cetaceans. The eastern part of Bulgaria entirely borders the Black Sea, which defines it as a maritime country. The Bulgarian coast is an important fishing region for local people and has a high potential for interactions between fisheries and cetaceans. Depredation caused by cetaceans and damage to fishing gears can potentially lead to substantial economic loss for fishermen, while cetacean bycatch raises conservation concerns. Over the period 2016 - 2019, we conducted face-to-face interviews with fishermen in local fishing areas to better understand the fisheries – cetacean interactions in the Bulgarian part of the Black Sea. The research objectives were to identify the current fishermen’s attitudes toward cetaceans, understand the damage caused by local marine mammals to the different types of fishing gear, and gather fishermen’s proposals to resolve the problems. To record all of this, a specially designed structured survey was conducted. The results showed that fishermen’s attitude towards cetaceans was mostly positive and was not influenced by the type of fishing gear used. We found that fisheries - cetacean interactions are frequent, especially with dalyans gear and set gillnets. Cetacean bycatch mortality was reported to be highest for set gillnets, and the most vulnerable species was the Phocoena phocoena. Although interview data may be biased due to differences in perceptions and experience of the interviewees, and therefore should be interpreted with caution, this method allowed us to cover multiple types of interactions between cetaceans and Bulgarian fisheries. Fishers (Pekania pennanti) are a forest‐dependent carnivore of conservation concern in British Columbia, Canada. Ecological, spatial, and genetic evidence suggests that there are 2 distinct populations (Boreal and Columbian) that occur in forests at low to moderate elevations in the boreal and central interior regions of the province. In British Columbia, fishers occur at low densities relative to other parts of their range in North America, are trapped for their fur, and are sensitive to habitat change. Despite these factors, little demographic information exists to assist with management decisions for these populations. We collated and analyzed survival and reproductive data from 100 radio‐tagged fishers from 5 independent studies conducted between 1990 and 2012 in British Columbia: 2 in the Boreal population, and 3 in the Columbian population. We also collated litter size data from 1 den box study and a translocation project of fishers from the Columbian population. Annual survival rates were not significantly different between the populations or between males and females; however, adult survival rates were higher than subadults (0.79 and 0.63, respectively). Subadult females had significantly lower survival rates than other sex or age classes. Reproductive rates were significantly different between the 2 populations (denning rate = 0.54 [Columbian], 0.82 [Boreal]; x¯ $\bar{x}$ litter size = 1.7 [Columbian], 2.6 [Boreal]). These differences resulted in net reproductive rates in the Columbian population that were less than half of those in the Boreal population (0.92 kits/reproductive season compared to 2.13, respectively). Population growth rates suggest that the Columbian population may have been declining during the studies, whereas the Boreal population may have been increasing (0.96 compared to 1.20). Consequently, we suggest that focused and intensive habitat and population management for fishers are needed in British Columbia to ensure population sustainability, particularly for the Columbian population. Diversification within fisheries operations can serve as an important form of self‐insurance against natural, regulatory and market risks to fishers' livelihoods. Diversification can take many forms, and yet the literature has primarily emphasised diversification across species to the exclusion of spatial and temporal dimensions of diversification. We analyse trends in diversification across species, space and time for all fishers along the entire continental West Coast of the United States from 1990 to 2015. Our findings reveal the importance of untangling both compositional (i.e. driven by changes in fleet composition) and individual (i.e. driven by within‐owner changes in diversification strategies) dimensions of diversification by showing how these effects have moved in contrary directions for all three forms of diversification. We also demonstrate how increases in temporal diversification have overwhelmed the overall stability of species and spatial diversification to leave the current fleet less exposed to financial variability compared to in the early 1990s. Cuckoo ray Leucoraja naevus (Müller and Henle, 1841) is caught in relative abundance in the eastern Atlantic from the North Sea to Mauritania and probaly entered the Mediterranean Sea where viable populations were observed. The captures of L. naevus decreased in the latter sea, and completely disappeared in some regions. This paper presents some specimens captured from the Algerian coast. The present work was designed to address the views and knowledge of the fishermen of Lake regarding the impact of the development of the lake on their community. The data were collected from 737 total respondents via a questionnaire using a personal interview. For their personal data, most of the respondents are young with intermediate qualifications, married and support families. On the impact of the development of Lake Burullus on fishing, funding sources and obtaining licenses were agreed upon as obstacles facing most of the respondents in addition to the emigration of fishermen. In addition, the majority agreed that there are still problems despite the development. While, for family problems, the majority agreed that there are still family problems related to the period of time off and living expenses that worsen by time. Considering social safety, most of them agreed that there are no means of social safety for the sake of the fisherman and his family. For the housing environment and prevailing services, the majority agreed on the existence of problems in the housing and the surrounding environment adding to the weakness of services. In general, fishermen are facing problems with non-available solutions. Therefore, the concerned authorities should give more attention to the status of fishermen, spreading awareness and culture among them to preserve the lake and its resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study mainly aimed to identify the behavior of fishermen towards the sustainable use of the resources of Lake Qarun, by achieving the following sub-objectives: Identifying the level of utilization of the extension services provided in the field of sustainable development of Lake Qarun, and identifying the level of knowledge of the respondents about the sustainable use of the lake resources. Determining the level of their attitudes towards practices related to the sustainable use of lake resources, determining the level of their implementation of practices relating to the sustainable use of lake resources, identifying the factors affecting the respondents’ behavior towards the sustainable use of Lake Qarun resources, and finally identifying the problems facing the respondents regarding the sustainable use of lake resources and their suggestions to address them. The comprehensiveness of this study was represented in the total number of fishermen registered in the lists of the cooperative association for fishermen in the village of Shakshuk in Fayoum governorate, where their number is (605) fishermen, and since it was difficult to collect research data from the total number of fishermen, especially in light of the spread of their places of residence on a large scale. A wide geography, so it was seen choosing a regular random sample of them, and the strength of this sample, according to the equation of Kergis and Morgan, reached 320 fishermen. The results showed that 62.6 percent of the respondents had a low level of knowledge of recommendations for the sustainable use of lake resources, while only 10 percent of the respondents had a high level of knowledge of recommendations for sustainable use, and it became clear that 73.5% of the respondents had a low tendency towards the sustainable use of lake resources. As for the positive trend category, it represents about 6.5%of the total respondents in the research sample, and with regard to the level of respondents' implementation of the practices of the safe use of lake resources, it became clear that about 66.5% of the total respondents had a low level of implementation of sustainable use practices of lake resources. The recruitment and deployment of migrant fishers in distant waters (DW) fisheries has emerged as a significant site for the production of unfree labor relations. We trace the recruitment and deployment geographies of migrant fishers from the Philippines to the vessel, conceptualizing the time-spaces of the journey as a significant site for producing unfree labor. We argue that labor brokerage not only establishes the conditions of the labor contract and financialization of migration in the migrants' home country but is also an ongoing process that intensifies unfreedom through the journey to deployment across multiple sites and temporalities. We conceptualize this movement into exploitative laboring situations as "funnels of unfreedom." The production of unfreedom through the geographies of recruitment, harboring, and transportation to the destination is one strategy by which DW fleets can reduce costs. The relevance of this discussion extends to other sectors where complex labor brokerage geographies constrain migrant worker choices and fortify unfreedom in labor relations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In this article, the significance of health and health practices in a group of artisanal fishermen from Yucatan, Mexico, are analyzed from the theory of social representations. Methodology: With a qualitative approach and ethnographic design, indirect observation was carried out in social networks (Facebook), direct observation in the community, and interviews with 10 artisanal fishermen, having as an axis of conversation discomfort, well-being and affectivity. Collection ended when saturation was reached. The information was typed for later content analysis using the ATLAS.ti 8 program. Results: The representative content is obscured by the dominant medical discourse, which emphasizes disease and its treatment. The body becomes the repository of discomfort. At the same time, it serves as the object that reflects it. At the affective level, there is a contradiction between living happily without worries and living with the fear and uncertainty of having a good catch or returning home. Conclusion: The discourse on fishermen's health protects contextual references that are built on an economic foundation that obscures the fishermen's problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study of the diffusion process of sound wave-based attractor innovation in fishing groups needs to be done because the application of innovation requires an adaptation process so that one can adopt the new subject through the established stages. The innovation-decision process is a mental process by which a person or institution goes from initial knowledge about an innovation. This research aims to analyze the measurement model and the relationship between variables in the decision-making of Piknet innovation by fishermen in Bulak Surabaya. SEM PLS data analysis was used to determine the relationship between latent and manifest variables. The test results showed that the CR value is above 0.7; therefore, it can be said that the variable has been met. The AVE values for X1-X5, Y1 and Y2 are above 0.5. Therefore, each latent variable has a valid measurement model. The conclusions from the research are as follows: (1) The analysis results of the measurement model met the requirements with good characteristics. Therefore, it can be continued to the next stage of structural model analysis; (2) Furthermore, 11 eliminated indicator variables did not meet the standard requirements of the outer loading value ; (3) A significant relationship was found in the latent variables of X1-X5, Y1 and Y2; (4) Indicator variables related to the latent variable are X1.4, X2.1, X3.2, X4.1-X4.3, X5.1, X5.2, Y1.1-Y1.3 and Y2.1,-Y2.3. The species extinction is caused sometimes by environmental forces such as habitat fragmentation, climate change, natural disaster, evolutionary changes etc, and sometimes by over-exploitation by humans, and pollution, to preserve the biodiversity in order to protect the ecosystem and the environmental life cycle, it is essential to predict the probabilities of the future in the way to interfere to save and protect the species from potential extinction. As the temperature factor is an important element for marine species, in this paper, we aim to estimate the temperature factor by discrete time Markov Chain, and then estimate the profit of two fishermen exploiting three species with some numerical simulations at the end. The so-iny mullet (Planiliza haematocheilus) is a coastal marine fish harvested commercially in Thailand. Over the past ten years, the volume of so-iny mullet catches has decreased. As a result, genetic information is required to create an effective sustainable management plan. Our study examined the genetic structure of the so-iny mullet population along the coast of Thailand. One hundred sixty-four samples were caught from nine fishing sites along the Thai coast: southern Thailand (Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Satun, Krabi, and Phang Nga), western upper Gulf of Thailand (Samut Songkram and Petchburi), and eastern upper Gulf of Thailand (Trat and Rayong). Genetic variation was examined in the partial nucleotide sequence of the control region in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA CR) (550-556 base pairs), and 44 haplotypes were found. Unique haplotypes were observed in all of the populations studied; in some populations there were several, implying that there is a large female effective population size. Population genetic structure analysis revealed differences among samples from southern Thailand, the western upper Gulf of Thailand, and the eastern upper Gulf of Thailand. In conclusion, we suggest that migration behavior as well as geographical distance between so-iny mullet habitats shaped the genetic structure of the populations in Thailand. Objective: This study aims to investigate the impact of knowledge and current penetration of fintech services on the overall performance of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which in this case were fishermen and marine farmers. Design/Methods/Approach: This study utilized data from nine fishing villages with two hundred respondents. The data was collected using a questionnaire base on the technique of purposive sampling and then analyzed using SmartPLS and path analysis. Findings: Knowledge had direct and indirect positive and significant effects on the overall managerial performance of fishermen and marine farmers. In addition, the user experience might increase the rapid adoption of Fintech, improving the performance of MSMEs in small island regions. Originality: This study highlights the importance of fintech knowledge for increasing the uptake and impact of Fintech among MSMEs in remote small island areas, which has escaped the attention of scientific research. Practical/Policy implication: Given the results, more effort is needed to increase the knowledge of MSMEs in small islands region regarding services and risk to increase the participation of MSMEs in Fintech. Coastal community is people who live and carry out socio-economic activities related to the coastal and its resources. One of the cultural wealth owned by the coastal community is sea alms. The purpose of this paper is to describe the symbolic meaning of the Barikan tradition in Mojo Village, describe how the community interprets the Barikan tradition, and find out the factors that influence the Barikan tradition in Mojo Village that still exists amid modernization. This research is expected to find and develop knowledge related to symbolic meaning in the Barikan tradition as well as contribute to the development of science, especially Social Studies Education, which includes social change. Data sources are informants, documents, and phenomena or events. The results showed that the symbolic meaning of the Barikan Tradition was in the buffalo head, tumpeng, and the offerings tradition. The village head interprets the barikan tradition as identity, the fishers as a ritual, and teenagers as entertainment. The factors that influence the Barikan tradition to continue to exist are the historical and mythical factors that have developed in the community. Thus far, there has been no change in the Barikan tradition even though the times have led to modernization.

Current fishery management practices in both the U.S. Gulf of Maine and southern Norwegian clawed lobster fisheries primarily focus on conserving mature females to maximize egg production. While abundance of adult American lobsters (Homarus americanus) in the Gulf of Maine remains high, declines appear to be on the horizon. Similarly, the European lobster (Homarus gammarus), is facing its lowest recorded population size in southern Norway. Understanding how management strategies and fishing practices impact lobster size structure and spawning potential could inform management to improve resiliency to climate-induced changes. In the Gulf of Maine fishery, egg-bearing (ovigerous) female lobsters are not only protected from harvest, but also v-notched which offers additional protection up to several years. Southern Norway, however, protects egg-bearing females without v-notching. Comparing these fisheries allows us to test the effect of the different management practices and how they interact with key vital rates, including growth and natural mortality rates. We used deterministic size- and age-structured models and empirically estimated growth and molt functions to simulate relative changes in abundance, size structure, egg production, and sex ratios in response to these two female protection strategies. Our findings suggest that in all scenarios, controlling total fishing effort to low or moderate levels - relative to the F > 1 that has been estimated for American lobster - is most important for the effectiveness of size-based restrictions on harvest of larger individuals. Both forms of female protection enhance overall egg production in both species across levels of fishing intensity, but also result in a skewed sex ratio in favor of females and a more pronounced size disparity between female and male lobsters. Moreover, our results suggest that American and European lobster populations exhibit differential responses to the management strategies, likely due to variations in estimates of natural mortality rates and growth rates. Our results highlight the sensitivity of management effectiveness to assumptions regarding the underlying biology, but also provide a clear message that current intense fishing practices have likely depleted the ability of both species to compensate for fishing mortality in the long term. In New South Wales (NSW), Australia, the majority of the commercial catch of eastern rock lobster (Sagmariasus verreauxi) is captured from traps fished on the mid and outer continental shelf in depths 50 – 220 m (119.5 t in 2021–22: 66.5 % of landings). Hermit crabs are the greatest bycatch from this fishery. The Fishery Management Strategy (2007) for the NSW lobster fishery, recognised the need to quantify by-catch species associated with lobster catches with an emphasis on increasing knowledge of the populations of hermit crabs along the NSW coast. An observer-based survey during 2008 and 2009 quantified by-catch from the fishery including, for each hermit crab species identified: (i) spatial and temporal distribution; (ii) relative abundance (number per trap-lift), and (iii) size distribution (shield length, SL). A total of 5782 hermit crabs were collected from 70 offshore trips comprising 722 trap-lifts. No hermit crabs were collected from 73 inshore trips (< 50 m depth) comprising 3232 trap-lifts, due to the low number (seven) of hermit crabs observed. Five species of hermit crab were identified. Three species were captured in very low numbers: Dardanus crassimanus (n=2), Dardanus pedunculatus (n=2) and Dardanus australis (n=1). The striated hermit crab (Dardanus arrosor ; Herbst, 1796; n = 1970) and the stridulating hermit crab (Strigopagurus strigimanus ; White, 1847; n =3812) were common in all latitudinal zones (30° - 37°S) and offshore depths (50–220 m) sampled. Abundance of D. arrosor decreased southward in contrast to S. strigimanus that showed the opposite pattern. Both species were more abundant on the outer-shelf than the mid-shelf. Mean SL of males was greater than females for both species across all latitudes on both the mid- and outer-shelf. Annual catches by the commercial fishery, by latitude and depth, were estimated for each species. Risk decisions by fishers are often accompanied by certain or uncertain externalities. However, the consideration of these externalities in their risk decisions has received little attention so far. In this study, we investigate how resource users incorporate certain or uncertain externalities into their risk decisions. We do this by conducting a lab-in-the-field experiment with Ugandan fishers at Lake Victoria. The fishers make a financially relevant risk decision with different levels of certainty about how a risky decision affects the income of a second fisher. In the treatments, a risky decision has either no impact, a possible positive or negative impact, a possible negative or no impact, or a certain negative impact on the other fisher's income. Our results show that fishers take significantly less risk when risky decisions have a certain negative effect on the income of another fisher than when they have no effect and the other fisher receives a fixed income. They also show that risk-taking only increases significantly compared to individual risk decisions when fishers know the other fisher's income but their risk decision has no impact on it. Mangroves, which are vital for maintaining the stability of coastal ecosystems, are facing increasing threats from global changes. This highlights the urgent need for effective adaptive capacity programs. This study focuses on the evaluation of such programs within Taman Nasional Bali Barat, Indonesia, specifically looking at their effectiveness in promoting sustainable mangrove conservation. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the community's involvement and perspectives, a survey was conducted, including a wide range of local stakeholders, not just those already involved in conservation efforts. The findings revealed that programs that prioritize flexibility, learning, and agency are crucial, but are currently underperforming. Interestingly, there was a significant variation in the willingness to participate among different groups. Fishermen and students displayed negative tendencies, while limited interest communities (a population segment historically less engaged in conservation), those with previous experiences with conservation programs, those seeking advice on marine activities, and those influenced by policies showed positive and significant responses. For example, tourist operators also exhibited a significantly positive engagement. Based on the analysis, this study provides targeted policy recommendations to enhance stakeholder engagement, improve program flexibility, and emphasize educational efforts. Freshwater turtles are among the least studied faunas in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India. Here, we report the presence of freshwater turtles (Cuora amboinensis) from Car Nicobar, a small remote island in the Nicobar archipelago comprising the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the people belonging to Nicobarese tribes (n = 233) to gather their local ecological knowledge as supportive information to obtain a better understanding of the status of turtles in Car Nicobar. Most interviewees (90%) opined that freshwater turtles are found to be rare or very rare on the Island. All the respondents (100%) expressed willingness to contribute to future conservation projects. Community-level awareness emerged as a prominent issue for future conservation using the Garrett ranking method. A stream network map was prepared using the digital elevation model to visualize streams and potential habitats of turtles. This report on the freshwater turtles is essential from an ecological perspective since information is scarce on the freshwater turtles in Car Nicobar. This study emphasizes the importance of the engagement of stakeholders in conservation projects and recommends providing adequate attention to the conservation and protection of freshwater turtle diversity in Car Nicobar.

This study comprehensively investigated the livelihood security scenario of fisher households employing the CARE framework with little modifications, in Kashmir, India. Primary data for this study was collected from selected fisher households, and a regression function was fitted to quantify the determinants of livelihood security. The findings revealed that fishing has been their dominant livelihood option. The landholding owned by the households was meagre enough to carry out farming or domesticate animals on commercial lines. Poor capital endowments place them at less livelihood security level; however, the respondents with diversified income have a relatively higher index value for livelihood. The regression estimates indicated that barring social and natural capital, all forms of capital have a significant role to play in securing their livelihood. Poor livelihood security, coupled with less income flow, has made their survival vulnerable to various distresses and health disorders, including the prevalence of infant and maternal mortality. Their dietary intake was undesirably less than their dietary recommendations. The COVID-19 pandemic was perceived as a shock to their livelihood security. Further, public investment, which is pertinent for the growth of the fisheries sector, has shown a discouraging trend. The study concluded with a few policy suggestions for securing the livelihood of the fisher community. Several seaweed species are commercialized worldwide both due to high demand for food and feed and as a raw material for the extraction of phycocolloids such as agar, carrageenan, and alginates that are used broadly in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Chile is the world’s leading marine seaweed biomass producer when it comes to the exploitation of natural kelp beds. This extraction pressure has persisted for decades and has resulted in a reduction in natural stocks along the benthic ecosystems of the Chilean coast. Over the last three decades, several strategies aimed at restoring seaweed stocks have been implemented (i.e., sexual and asexual reproduction, the use of spore-type propagules or fragments of thalli, and entire thallus transplants). Success rates have varied, but the biological feasibility of such strategies has been demonstrated for several species. However, technological improvements must be achieved to move from small-scale, pilot experiments to cost-effective restocking strategies that are easy to transfer to fisher communities and another end-user, scalable to marine field conditions, and socio-ecologically sustainable. Researchers in other geographic areas have explored similar pathways for developing kelp restocking strategies and have tackled the research gaps regarding its massification. This work summarizes the research activities carried out in recent decades in the search for sustainable strategies to restore algal stocks in Chile.

Healthy and protected coral reefs help island systems in the tropics thrive and survive. Reef passages link the open ocean to lagoon and coastal areas in these ecosystems and are home to an exceptionally diverse and abundant marine life, hosting emblematic species and fish spawning aggregations. Their multiple benefits for the islands and their peoples (e.g., for transport, fishing, socio-cultural aspects) remain yet understudied. Drawing from qualitative interviews with fishers, scuba divers, and surfers along the coast of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, this study highlights the multi-faceted importance of these keystone places. It shows that reef passages are locally deemed 'communication zones' between coastal and oceanic spaces and species, and have significant un(der)explored ecological and socio-cultural roles. Aims: To estimate the risk of human rotavirus (RV) and astrovirus (HAstV) infections for swimmers and fishers at Las Cañas beach, Uruguay. Methods and Results: Surface water samples were collected monthly for 1 year. The dose–response models used were β‐Poisson and 1F1 hypergeometric for RV and HAstV, respectively. The probabilities of infection were calculated using a kernel density estimate to fitting the data and then sampling from this distribution (Monte Carlo simulation). The probability of RV infection for fishers was between 0 and 65% and for swimmers was between 0 and 50% (<18 years old) and between 0 and 38% (>18 years old). For HAstV, the probability of infection for fishers was between 0% and 45% and for swimmers was between 0 and 38% (<18 years old) and between 0 and 18% (>18 years old). Conclusions: This study suggests that fishers are at higher risk of infection for both viruses compared with swimmers mainly due to higher viral frequency and concentration at the site for fishing activities. Smartphones are increasingly the most common type of mobile phone used throughout the world, offering users the ability to browse the internet and access mobile applications. Smartphones are also often equipped with high definition digital cameras, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and GPS. They can, therefore, facilitate the collection and dissemination of data, often through purpose designed applications (apps). As a result, numerous apps have been developed for use in wild capture fisheries. These apps have been designed for a number of purposes including for data collection, providing information to fishers, being linked to value chains and post-harvest practices and for uses linked to employment, legislation and safety. These apps are used across the world from large commercialized fisheries to small scale fisheries. In the latter, apps have the potential to bridge a technology gap, possibly replicating the functions of multiple pieces of hardware such as are used on larger vessels. This paper presents results from a narrative literature review to provide a synthesis of smart phone apps currently available for use by commercial fishers. 84 smartphone apps were identified as being currently available for use in commercial wild capture fisheries throughout the world. Smartphone apps were available for a number of uses but they were predominantly used for data collection and reporting. While this review provides an important overview of the extent of app use in commercial wild capture fisheries there remains potential for future work to improve understanding of how beneficial app use is and what it is that encourages app use and determines an app as being 'successful'. We implement a newly developed framework, expressed as a mathematical model that we solve numerically, for understanding environmental sex determination in populations with consistent trends in abundance. Though broadly applicable, the analysis here focuses on the steadily declining North Atlantic eel populations. This enables us to show how the eco-evolutionary dynamics of eels reflect sex-specific and habitat-specific relationships among demographic features. When increasing stress levels resulting from Human-Induced Rapid Environmental Change are imposed on these populations, they become increasingly vulnerable to highly biased sex ratios. Our analysis is both prescriptive (identifying the key components and the priorities for deepening our understanding of them) and predictive (indicating expected qualitative patterns to be tested in future work). Priorities include establishing sex ratios and age/sex structure by habitat, measuring the magnitude and effects of social and individual stress levels, estimating effects of fishing pressure, and investigating reproduction in the Sargasso Sea. Key predictions address expected biases and trends in sex ratios, habitats more likely to be population sources (e.g. river basins) or sinks (e.g. estuary), expected trends in bimaturism (sex-specific maturation times), implications of the relative speed of adaptation and of environmental deterioration, and fitness responses to stress levels, early-stage mortality, and female demographic parameters. In Uruaú beach, artisan fishing has a great influence on the community's economic maintenance, so much that it expands to other cultural practices. One of which is the making of jangadinhas, small boats that simulate the rafts used by fishermen. These rafts are used by fishermen and their children to play on the beach and in the community's lakes. We start from the problem of how the process of insertion in the fishing activity happens, thinking of the making and playing with the jangadinhas as part of this process, bringing the debate on the relationship between work and social movements in the formation of the concept of education. We have as objectives discussing the process of insertion in the fishing activity starting from the playing with the jangadinhas using the concept of popular education. Furthermore, to highlight aspects of artisan fishing in Uruaú and its social organization. The observations for this work began in 2016, referring to the movement of fishermen and their guidelines for maintaining their practices in the Lagoa do Uruaú, along with an insertion in Colônia Z-11, which takes care of the political and social issues of Beberibe fishermen, in 2017, promoting observations from within the institution that governs the movement. As calls for climate action gain momentum, governments and international organisations are committing to ambitious climate targets and scaling up their climate action. In this article, we argue that to address climate change, 'just' climate action is required which moves away from portraying local communities as 'victims' and/or 'beneficiaries' and focuses on investing in their social and material capabilities so that they determine their futures and pathways of change. Climate action will have little meaning or will produce counterproductive results unless it is mobilised to question deep-seated inequalities and unjust framings that feed into epistemic closures and foreclose possibilities of plural pathways towards radical social change. Drawing on our research with front-line communities in India, we emphasise the importance of processual aspects of addressing climate (in)justice. This article builds upon Amerindian epistemologies and develops a perspectival ethnography of industrial Northwestern European skilled modes of engaging with wild fish. It explores Amerindian perspectivism as an ethnographic methodology grounded on animic premises: subject or object status are relative and relational, experience is intersubjective; the body is permeable, and its perspectives can be exchanged through tools and mimetic processes. Thus subjectivity is collectively constituted and the fundamental means of knowing, leading to the acknowledgement of subjectivity in others. Documenting a perspectival exchange guided by Shetland fishers trawling for monkfish, the article focuses on some possible dynamics and affective affordances involved in gutting processes. Gutting is physically and emotionally taxing labour that involves brief but intimate encounters with responsive beings that may offer effective resistance, affecting fishers or damaging their own value as catch. It entails the possibility of developing an intimate knowledge of fish anatomy, ecology, and behaviour, as well as potentially awareness of fish suffering and fishiness, an empathic quality. The research reveals how Shetland fishers maintain animic modes of learning and being in their understandings of the body and fish. The ethnography presents first‐hand insights into 'relations of trust', which, although widely reported, continue to be dismissed as implausible. These relations and their dynamics are further attested through Shetlands háfwords and other language practices that establish synecdochical relations between fishers and fish, restricting violence and making it endurable. Indigenous fishery harvest goals and data from locally driven wildlife research can inform ecosystem-based fisheries management, guided by cultural values of respect for and reciprocity with wildlife. Using highly conservative species-specific thresholds (mean %I of presumptive uninfected fish +2 SDs), 4.3% of Bluegill, 13.4% of Brown Trout, 19.3% of Northern Pike, and 18.3% of Walleye tested positive for VHSV antibodies by ELISA. Simple Summary: Artisanal fishing constitutes a subsistence activity in much of the world. Changes in fishing legislation can damage the sector if rapid adaptations are not achieved. As Europe demands landing of all catches, except those whose survival is scientifically proven, this study proposes possible improvements for the sector through a pilot study. We evaluated the survival of discarded fish and the possible recapture once they have reached a commercially profitable size. Europe calls for the end to fisheries discards, which means bringing all caught fish (subject to minimum sizes or quotas) to land. This decision is beneficial to the ecosystem, since it forces the selectivity of the fishing gears to improve. However, artisanal fishermen find themselves in a vulnerable situation where their subsistence depends on catches with small profit margins. An exemption to this landing obligation exists, as it is also ruled that those animals whose survival is scientifically guaranteed may be returned to the sea. Here we study the survival of Plectorhinchus mediterraneus captured by hookline and gillnet, as well as their physiological recovery. Survival exceeds 93% in both cases. The physiological assessment of primary (cortisol) and secondary (energy mobilization, acid-base and hydromineral balance, and immune system) stress responses indicates that surviving animals are able to recover after fishing. Thus, we propose the optimal size of capture of this species to achieve greater economic benefit. For this, we rely on the prices according to size in recent years, as well as on the growth curves of the species. In this way, by releasing fish of less than 1 kg, the current benefits could be multiplied between 2.3 and 9.6 times. Catch‐and‐release fishing is a common conservation practice in recreational fisheries for Atlantic Salmon, although the effects on the reproductive success of caught‐and‐released fish are poorly understood. Herein, we compared the relative reproductive success of caught‐and‐released to non‐caught salmon and tested the effect of temperature at release on reproductive success in the Rimouski River, Québec, Canada. At least 83% of caught‐and‐released salmon that moved upstream of a dam successfully reproduced, including fish that have been released in water above 20°C. However, the reproductive success of caught‐and‐released female salmon was only 73% of the reproductive success of non‐caught salmon. Moreover, the increasing temperature did not affect the reproductive success of released fish that entered a trap, but fish caught at warmer temperatures were less likely to enter the trap. Our findings should be useful for evaluating the risks and benefits of catch‐and‐release, and for optimising conservation practices used for the preservation of Atlantic salmon populations. The purpose of this article is to define the function of the Fishermen's Sea Pilgrimage organised in northern Poland. It is the only boat pilgrimage on the Baltic Sea. One of the authors took part in nearly all the pilgrimages in the years 2004–2022. The authors describe the origins and form of sea pilgrimage against contemporary general trends in pilgrimage in Poland. Next, they present the route, participants, and course of this particular event. The participants of the Fishermen's Sea Pilgrimage chose Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles' church in Puck as their destination. The pilgrimage is an illustration of an emerging trend in contemporary pilgrimaging in Poland, characterised by: (1) choosing alternative modes of making the journey, apart from walking; (2) pilgrimage groups not based exclusively on the parishioners' place of residence; (3) the performance of both religious and non-religious functions. Long‐term effects of evolving fisheries management, changing angler practices, and stream habitat development on stream trout fisheries in southeastern Minnesota, USA, were examined by analyzing data on >1,000 weekly winners from a single‐watershed, catch‐and‐harvest Brown Trout Salmo trutta fishing contest spanning 54 years. The weights of winning fish declined significantly across the period examined. No‐entry weeks increased within the past two decades, corresponding to expanding catch‐and‐release fishing. The streams that produced winning fish shifted as stream access increased, degraded stream habitat was improved, and various angling restrictions were instituted. Most winning fish were caught with live or preserved bait, although the proportion of winners caught with artificial lures doubled from the 1960s to the 2010s. The interpretation of contest results must consider various angling regulations (e.g., protected slot lengths, artificial lures only, catch and release only) that were placed on some reaches during and after the 1980s, increasing voluntary catch‐and‐release practices of contemporary anglers, and expanding stream access and habitat improvements within the watershed.
