Abstract

The article presents the original results of the investigation of sulfide-bearing mine tailings dumps (Ursk, Western Siberia, Russia), the adjacent territory, and acid mine drainage flows. The novelty of this study is related to integration of geophysical and geochemical data. The geoelectrical structure of the dump and the drainage valley was determined using the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method. Magnetic anomalies above the surface of the site were identified using ground magnetic surveys. The orthophotomap and a digital elevation model were obtained on the basis of aerial photography from an unmanned aircraft. The model of thermal imaging allows us to identify a number of temperature anomalies in the upper part of the dump slope and filtration zone in the drainage valley, caused by exothermic reactions. The digital relief model was constructed comprising three zones: (1) oxidation, (2) leaching, and (3) mixing and dilution. The oxidation zone is marked by low electrical resistivity (1–10 Ω·m), low pH values of the drainage waters (pH 3.61), low values of the modulus of the magnetic induction vector, and heating by +5 °C compared to the solid dump material that is not actively exposed to water. The oxidative conditions and low pH values favor the dilution of the Fe2+ compounds in the drainage solutions, which also contain Cu (3000 μg/L), Pb (1200 μg/L), As (1300 μg/L), and Hg (34 μg/L). The zone of the primary geochemical barrier is formed within the first 400 m, where the major proportion of dissolved elements if deposited. The second iron–aluminum sorption geochemical barrier is formed at a distance of 1000 m at the mixing zone with the Ur River. The stable geochemistry of surface waters, formed due to the inflow of drainage waters into the Ur River and further into the reservoir, persists at a distance of up to 7.7 km from the dump.

Open Access is still met with mixed reactions and hesitation from scholars in the humanities. In particular, a lack of quality assurance is often assumed. But quite the opposite is true, at least when the idea of openness is thoroughly applied to quality assurance processes and procedures. By opening up and digitising the peer review process, significant improvements in the quality of works in the humanities become possible. It also becomes clear how the concept of academic work is changing through the movements inside traditional publication practices.

Abstract

In the light of recent progress in the development of SARS-CoV-2 main protease inhibitors, the synthesis of their key fragment, heterocyclic amino acids, is of great interest. Here, we report a method for the preparation of two new quisqualic acid analogs containing hydantoin and imidazolidinone moieties. The hydantoin analog was obtained using an amide ester cyclization, while the imidazolidinone unit was constructed by reductive amination and subsequent cyclization of a substituted ethylenediamine with carbonyldiimidazole. The presented approach provides the convergent synthesis of target analogs in 8 and 5 steps respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The GEX2 protein is expressed in the maize gamete membranes and is necessary during fertilization at the stage of contact (adhesion) of gamete membranes. Knockout of GEX2 gene can presumably lead to impaired fertilization and, as a result, to the formation of matroclinic haploid maize embryos. The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of CRISPR/Cas9 editing of the GEX2 gene after PEG-mediated transfection of maize protoplasts by ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes with different gRNAs. For the first time, constructs for CRISPR/Cas9 editing of the maize GEX2 gene have been created, the effectiveness of which has been proven on protoplasts and reaches 10.7%, depending on the selected gRNA and the ratio and number of components in the RNP complexes. Primary excitation energy transfer and charge separation in photosystem I (PSI) from the extremophile desert green alga Chlorella ohadii grown in low light were studied using broadband femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy in the spectral range from 400 to 850 nm and in the time range from 50 fs to 500 ps. Photochemical reactions were induced by the excitation into the blue and red edges of the chlorophyll Qy absorption band and compared with similar processes in PSI from the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. When PSI from C. ohadii was excited at 660 nm, the processes of energy redistribution in the light-harvesting antenna complex were observed within a time interval of up to 25 ps, while formation of the stable radical ion pair P700+A1− was kinetically heterogeneous with characteristic times of 25 and 120 ps. When PSI was excited into the red edge of the Qy band at 715 nm, primary charge separation reactions occurred within the time range of 7 ps in half of the complexes. In the remaining complexes, formation of the radical ion pair P700+A1− was limited by the energy transfer and occurred with a characteristic time of 70 ps. Similar photochemical reactions in PSI from Synechocystis 6803 were significantly faster: upon excitation at 680 nm, formation of the primary radical ion pairs occurred with a time of 3 ps in ~30% complexes. Excitation at 720 nm resulted in kinetically unresolvable ultrafast primary charge separation in 50% complexes, and subsequent formation of P700+A1− was observed within 25 ps. The photodynamics of PSI from C. ohadii was noticeably similar to the excitation energy transfer and charge separation in PSI from the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii; however, the dynamics of energy transfer in C. ohadii PSI also included slower components. Abstract

β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is a promising material in regenerative traumatology for the creation of bone implants. Previously, it was established that doping the structure with certain cations can reduce the growth of bacterial activity. Recently, much attention has been paid to co-doped β-TCP, that is explained by their ability, on the one hand, to reduce cytotoxicity for cells of the human organism, on the other hand, to achieve a successful antibacterial effect. Sr, Cu-co-doped solid solutions of the composition Ca9.5–xSrxCu(PO4)7 was obtained by the method of solid-phase reactions. The Rietveld method of structural refinement revealed the presence of Sr2+ ions in four crystal sites: M1, M2, M3, and M4. The M5 site is completely occupied by Cu2+. Isomorphic substitution of Ca2+ → (Sr2+and Cu2+) expands the concentration limits of the existence of the solid solution with the β-TCP structure. No additional phases were formed up to x = 4.5 in Ca9.5–xSrxCu(PO4)7. Biocompatibility tests were performed on cell lines of human bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSC), human fibroblasts (MRC-5) and osteoblasts (U-2OS). It was demonstrated that cytotoxicity exhibited a concentration dependence, along with an increase in osteogenesis and cell proliferation. Ca9.5–xSrxCu(PO4)7 powders showed significant inhibitory activity against pathogenic strains Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Piezoelectric properties of Ca9.5–xSrxCu(PO4)7 were investigated. Possible ways to achieve high piezoelectric response are discussed. The combination of bioactive properties of Ca9.5–xSrxCu(PO4)7 renders them multifunctional materials suitable for bone substitutes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

382. Heterometallic (Nickel, Titanium)-Containing Dimethylglyoximates as Precursors for Nickel Titanate Coating.

Abstract

Heterometallic (nickel, titanium) dimethylglyoximate (II) with a nickel : titanium ratio of 1 was synthesized from nickel(I) dimethylglyoximate and titanium tetrachloride TiCl4 in chloroform. Resulting complex II was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), IR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. It was shown that the synthesized complex II is a solvate. On the basis of the studies carried out, an assumption was made about the possible structure of complex II. It was found that the thermal decomposition of complex II begins at 44°C. A constant mass of the decomposition product is observed in the temperature range of 590–850 °C. According to X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) of the thermolysis product, the main crystalline phase is nickel titanate NiTiO3; there are also up to 5 wt % of nickel oxide NiO and titanium oxide TiO2, as well as carbon. Complex II was used to obtain a nickel titanate coating of a corundum substrate. A solution of complex II, dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide C2H6OS, was applied to a previously prepared surface of aluminum oxide (corundum) by immersing the substrate in the solution, after which it was fired at 850°C, the organic part (dimethylglyoxime) (III) pyrolyzed, and a coating was formed. According to X-ray diffraction data, the resulting coating is characterized by a perovskite structure and belongs to nickel titanate.
