In this research the membranes distillation were used to remove calcium ions from heavy sewers at dairy plants in Iraq. This method is easy to operate, easy to manage and has many economic benefits. A chemical treatment was carried out on it using alum as a coagulant, different tests achieved samples before and after passing MD, according to APHA, AWWA, WEF. The results showed that obtained in water treatment trust that has been manufactured and edited according to the characteristics of the water waste the interests of the dairy capacity of this method to remove the calcium ion to a certain extent it is when the concentration reaches the inside of this ion to 1428.57 mg per liter, where to start the composition of hydroxides of calcium responsible for pain. The optimal working temperature ranges from 20-22 ° C and the flow is around 0.66 kg.m-2.h-1, here was the result of a layer of plaster that led to clogged membrane and folding and was stopped for washing and cleaning. Information on application of metallurgical, welding fluxes and slags and their classification by chemical composition is given. The importance of studying the regularities of gas interaction with molten fluxes and slags is shown. It is established that the problems of production and welding of metals with minimum (or controlled) content of gas impurities (oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen) are the main ones at interaction of the three phases — gas-flux(slag)-metal. A review of literature on hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen absorption by molten fluxes and slags and of the methods used to determine oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content in slags, fluxes, oxides, nitrides and aerosols is given. New procedures were developed for determination of oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content in slags and fluxes were developed, and currently available procedures were complemented. The expediency of conducting studies of the electroslag process in an open mould to produce titanium ingots using consumable electrodes made from conditioned wastes of VT1-0 titanium sheets was substantiated. The results of the study of the produced titanium ingots of 85 mm diameter and 90×90 mm cross section are presented. Smelting was performed in electroslag installation A-550, flux was CaF2 (100 %). To prevent critical heating of the consumable titanium electrodes and oxidation of their surface, a sliding current supply was installed on the upper flange of the mould. The optimal technological parameters of electroslag smelting were established on the basis of analysis of the shape and determination of the depth of the metal pool, which was fixed with tungsten chips at the deposition rate of 0.9⋅10‒2 kg/s; 1.1⋅10‒2 kg/s and 1.7⋅10‒2 kg/s. Surface condition and chemical composition were evaluated on ingots produced with an optimal deposition rate of (0.9⋅10‒2 kg/s). The ingot surface was smooth, without any constrictions or corrugations. Chemical composition of ingots, wt.%: Ti — base; C — 0.024; Fe — 0.06; Si — 0.05; O2 — 0.25; N2 — 0.058; H2 — 0.0016 meets the requirements of GOST 19807‒91 for unalloyed VT1-0 titanium, except for higher oxygen and nitrogen content; and fully complies with the chemical composition of VT1-2 grade and a number of undoped titanium materials from foreign manufacturers. 3D deterministic core calculation represents important category of the nuclear fuel cycle and safe Nuclear Power Plant operation. The appropriate solution was not published yet. Data preparation process for non-fuel elements of the core represents the challenge for scientists. This report briefly introduce the problem of the data preparation process and gives the information about new input format for macrocode PARCS (PMAXS). The best homogenization process approach is to prepare data in infinite lattice cell for fuel assemblies, which are placed next to the another fuel assembly. Data for fuel assembly located next to the non-fuel region are better with preparation in the real geometry with the real boundary conditions. Results of the neutron spectra study show that the PMAXS file format is well prepared for the 2 group calculation, but it is not well prepared for the multigroup calculations, however the XSEC file format still gave reasonable results.

Biodegradable aminosiloxanes have been synthesized by the interaction of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane with monoethanolamine in the presence of a binary antioxidant and an alkali metal alcoholate. The synthesized compounds were used to develop flux compositions for tinning copper wire and producing electrodes for solar panels. The wetting ability, fluxing activity and biodegradability of the flux were investigated. The possibility of using a flux for hot tinning of copper wire is shown, which makes it possible to increase the environmental friendliness of the production of electrodes for solar panels.

Oral therapy of tramadol, an opiate analgesic, undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism and requires frequent administration. Transdermal therapy by virtue can overcome these issues and can improve the efficacy and reduce abuse liability of tramadol. The aim of this research was to investigate the possibility of transdermal delivery of tramadol by formulating proniosome gel and evaluate its therapeutic potential in vivo. The effect of formulation composition as well as amount of drug on physicochemical characteristics of prepared proniosomes were examined. Best proniosome gel (F4) was selected and evaluated for drug release, stability and transdermal efficacy by ex vivo and in vivo experiments. The vesicles demonstrated optimal properties including spherical shape, nanosize with good entrapment efficiency, adequate zeta potential, higher stability and greater transdermal flux. Smartphone sensors are gaining research interest due to continuous sensor upgrades, leading to more precise readings of these sensors. For this study, the light sensor of a smartphone was used in determining light transmittance during the phase inversion process of ultrafiltration polysulfone-membrane manufacturing. Membrane separation is one of the best available technologies when it comes to water and wastewater treatment. The purpose of this study was to correlate light transmittance, at certain demixing steps during phase inversion, with membrane porosity, pure water flux and cross-sectional SEM images. Results show close relation between light transmittance and the mentioned membrane properties.

Phase chemical analysis of post-weld slags from Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) is applied to explain the chemical function of flux constituent compounds in the welding process. FactSage 6.4 calculations were used to aid in the interpretation of the phase chemical analyses. Five commercial agglomerated fluxes from two suppliers were used. These fluxes cover three types of fluoride based flux classes: Fluoride Basic flux, Aluminate Basic flux and Aluminate Rulile flux. Basic fluxes are based in the SiO2–Al2O3–MgO CaF2 system. The slag liquidus lowering effect of CaF2 is 19 °C/%CaF2 in the Fluoride Basic fluxes, and 4 °C/%CaF2 in the Aluminate Basic fluxes. The Aluminate Rutile flux is based in the SiO2–Al2O3–MgO–TiO2–MnO–CaF2 system. Little CaF2 addition is used in this flux since TiO2 addition lowers its liquidus temperature sufficiently. The level of CaF2 addition sets the quantity and chemistry of fluoride gas compounds formed. The main gas fluoride gas species expected to form in welding with the five fluxes are CaF2, MgF2, NaF, KF, NaAlF4, and AlF3. In addition, TiF3 is expected to form in welding with the Aluminate Rutile flux, indicating the importance of titanium oxidation state in fluoride gas formation.

Purpose: Due to the significant increase of a number of pulsars discovered with high-frequency radio telescopes over the last ten years and the necessity to obtain accurate parameters of their decameter radiation (as well as to identify single pulses detected with the UTR-2), the second decameter census of these sources with the UTR-2 radio telescope became needed. Design/methodology/approach: Single pulses detected as a result of the first decameter survey of pulsars and transient emission sources can be anomalously intense pulses of the recently discovered pulsars. Identification is only possible with an accurate information on the dispersion measure (DM) of each of these sources. Given that the new pulsars are likely to have a low radiant flux density, in contrast to the first decameter pulsar census [1], the second one plans to increase the signal-to-noiseratio by increasing the observation time of each pulsar. This paper gives a complete list of the studied sources, limited by the dispersion measure (DM< 30 pc·cm-³), period (P> 0.1 s) and declination (δ>-10º), known for the beginning of 2020, as well as some examples of the decameter pulsar radio emission detected by means of pipeline data processing with the possibility of flexible adjustment of search parameters. Findings: For the first time in the low-frequency wavelength range, the radio emission from the PSR J2325-0530, PSR J0613+3731, and PSR J1426+52 pulsars has been detected. The main result of present work is specified period for the latter pulsar (PSR J1426+52), being 0.995866 s ± 5 µs, the other parameters of its radio emission are also specified. Conclusions: High sensitivity of the UTR-2 radio telescope, its receiving equipment and efficient data processing and analysis pipeline allow detecting the decameter radiation of weak pulsars, as well as obtaining their parameters with the accuracy sufficient for identification of previously discovered transient signals.

Ex-mining pond water is widely used for the daily needs of the people these days, such as bathing, washing, and even drinking. Over time, it turns out that coal mine acid water has polluted the environment. The use of membrane technology to produce water that meets drinking water quality standards by the Minister of Health Regulation No. 492 of 2010 can be a solution to this problem. The NF270 membrane is a membrane process between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, which has a lower flux and operating pressure below 0.2-1.53 Mpa compared to reverse osmosis. Membrane NF270 is used for the reclamation of wastewater, water purification and softening, seawater desalination, and others. Its high rejection of organic molecules with a molecular weight of 200-2000 Da ions and multivalent can remove suspended solids, natural organic matter, bacteria, viruses, salts, and divalent ions contained in water, including coal mine acid water. The purpose of treating acid mine drainage with the NF270 membrane is to remove COD, TSS, TDS, and Fe metals. The NF270 membrane was used in this study to treat the coal mine acid water of PT. Bukit Asam. The performance of the NF270 process was assessed from the effect of pressure (4, 5, and 6 bar) on the flux and rejection rate of each parameter in a single solution, mixed and aqueous coal mine acid solution. The optimum pressure of the NF270 membrane for all parameters was 6 bar. This optimum pressure was then used to compare the phenomenon of flux that occurred and the level of rejection produced in the original sample of coal mine acid water. In the original coal mine acid water, there was a significant decrease in flux due to fouling deposition on the membrane surface. This phenomenon of decreasing flux was caused by fouling and polarization concentration. The rejection rates produced for the parameters of COD, TSS, TDS, and Fe with NF270 membranes were 56.4-93.1%; 78.5-100%; 43-69.3%; 67-100% respectively. Treated coal mine acid water using NF270 membrane technology can be used as drinking water that meets the standards of the Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation. Thus, NF270 membrane technology can be used to process coal mine acid water into environmentally friendly drinking water.

In order to obtain high-flux antifouling nanofiltration membrane, a series of ICIC/ZnO/HBPA nanofiltration membranes were prepared by interfacial polymerization of 5-isocyanato-isophthaloyl chloride (ICIC) and hyperbranched polyamide (HBPA) on the surface of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane, the nano-ZnO was incorporated into the polyamide separation layer. The existence of ZnO is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The analysis results of water contact angle indicate that the membrane hydrophilicity is increased by incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles, the lowest water contact angle of the membrane is 22.7°. Compared with the membrane without ZnO, the flux and the salt rejection rate for NaCl, MgCl2, Na2SO4 and MgSO4 of the membrane containing ZnO increase. The largest flux of the ICIC/ZnO/HBPA membrane is about 102 L·m-2·h-1, which is nearly 2.6 times of the membrane without ZnO. The bacteriostasis of the membranes to E. coli is enhanced by incorporation more ZnO. Increasing the monomer content or prolonging the interfacial polymerization time is beneficial to increasing the salt rejection rate, but the order of the salt retention rate is changed. When HBPA is 0.8%, ICIC is 0.1%, content of ZnO is 0.02 g and reaction time is 10 min, the salt rejection rate for NaCl, MgCl2, Na2SO4 and MgSO4 of the prepared membrane are 60.8%, 96.4%, 95.1%, 96.7% and the flux is 53, 54.7, 53.7 L·m-2·h-1and 54.7 L·m-2·h-1, respectively.

This paper presents the technological process of manufacturing a men sports shoe product, in the IL system. The paper begins with the presentation of the technological process of manufacturing the product as an assembly, followed by detailing in a case study the specific operations, but also the common ones, which are carried out during the process. In the case of this model, the order of operation of the technological process is given by the method of joining the top with the upper but also by the type of the linings. The technological process presents the method of assembling the component parts of the upper assembly, the equipment used, the time norm and the production norm. In conclusion, we can say that a special role in obtaining a production both qualitative and quantitative represents the way the production is organized, the maintenance of the machines, the optimal use of the production capacity, so as to ensure a continuous flow of production. The production launch is made according to the adopted manufacturing program, and this is done in correlation with the production capacity and the quantity of the finished product that will reach the beneficiary.

Acidic gases like CO2, SO2, NO2, H2S, etc., are to be removed as these are polluting the atmosphere in one way or another by inducing temperature rise which further results in undesirable climatic change. Among all these gases, CO2 is the most responsible for the environmental issues and its capture becomes one of prime importance. The objective of this work is the enhancement of the CO2 absorption by employing nanofluids in the presence of magnetic field. The nanofluid used in this work is Al2O3/water in the concentration of 0.0015%. The maximum flux obtained is 0.014 mol/(m2s) (without magnetic field) and 0.015 mol/(m2s) (with magnetic field) for lower CO2 flow rate of 30 L/h. The nanofluids along with the magnetic field show a positive performance towards the absorption of CO2.

Fluxomics is an innovative -omics research field that measures the rates of all intracellular fluxes in the central metabolism of biological systems. Fluxomics gathers data from multiple different -omics fields, portraying the whole picture of molecular interactions. Recently, fluxomics has become one of the most relevant approaches to investigate metabolic phenotypes. Metabolic flux using 13C-labeled molecules is increasingly used to monitor metabolic pathways, to probe the corresponding gene-RNA and protein-metabolite interaction networks in actual time. Thus, fluxomics reveals the functioning of multi-molecular metabolic pathways and is increasingly applied in biotechnology and pharmacology. Here, we describe the main fluxomics approaches and experimental platforms. Moreover, we summarize recent fluxomic results in different biological systems.

Obsolescence and vacancy are part of the traditional building life cycle, as tenants leave properties and move to new ones. Flux, a period of uncertainty before the establishment of new direction, can be considered part of building DNA. What is new, due to structural disruptions in the way we work, is the rate and regularity of flux, reflected in obsolescence, vacancy, and impermanent use. Covid-19 has instantly accelerated this disruption. Retail failure has increased with even more consumers moving online. While employees have been working from home, rendering the traditional office building in the central business district, at least temporarily, obsolete. This article reflects on the situation by reporting findings from an 18-month research project into the practice of planning adaptation in the English built environment. Original findings based on interviews with a national sample of local authority planners, combined with an institutional analysis of planning practice since the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act, suggest that the discipline of planning in England is struggling with the reality of flux. There is a demand for planning to act faster, due to the speed of change in the built environment, and liberal political concerns with planning regulation. This is reflected in relaxations to permitted development rules and building use categories. However, participants also indicate that there is a concurrent need for the planning system to operate in a more measured way, to plan the nuanced complexity of a built environment no longer striated by singular use categories at the local level. This notion of flux suggests a process of perpetual change, turbulence, and volatility. However, our findings suggest that within this process, there is a temporal dialectic between an accelerating rate of change in the built environment and a concomitant need to plan in a careful way to accommodate adaptation. We situate these findings in a novel reading of the complex adaptive systems literature, arguing that planning practice needs to embrace uncertainty, rather than eradicate it, in order to enable built environment adaptation. These findings are significant because they offer a framework for understanding how successful building adaptation can be enabled in England, moving beyond the negativity associated with the adaptation of buildings in recent years. This is achieved by recognizing the complex interactions involved in the adaptation process between respective stakeholders and offering an insight into how respective scales of planning governance can coexist successfully.

Two types of membranes, for hydrophilic and hydrophobic microfiltration, were prepared as flat sheets to treat a phenol-contaminated water solution. The membranes were fabricated using four synthetic polymers: polysulfone, polyethylene oxide, dimethylacetamide, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Scanning electron microscope measurements of the top-surface and cross-section images of the produced membranes were used to characterize them physically. Distilled water and water contaminated with phenol were used to evaluate the membrane’s performance based on the flux results depending on pressure, the concentration of phenol, and temperature variables. Meanwhile, the rejection performance was evaluated using the phenol-contaminated water solution. The results show that the flux increased with increases in pressure and temperature and decreased with increases in phenol concentration. Distilled water gave far higher results than water contaminated with phenol. The flux of distilled water ranged from 52.18 to 73.15 L/m2/h for the hydrophilic type and from 72.27 to 97.46 L/m2/h for the hydrophobic type, whereas the flux of water contaminated with phenol solution ranged from 26.58 to 61.55 L/m2/h for the hydrophilic type and from 29.98 to 80.55 L/m2/h for the hydrophobic type. Meanwhile, the phenol solution’s rejection was 60% when using a hydrophilic membrane, whereas it was only 45% when a hydrophobic membrane was used. The hydrophobic membrane showed high fluxes and low rejection. Thus, transport through this membrane is closer to having viscous behavior than that through the hydrophilic membrane; in contrast, the permeability through the hydrophilic membrane is less because the pore size decreases the viscous flow mechanism.

Low-cost, readily available, or even disposable membranes in water purification or downstream biopharma processes are becoming attractive alternatives to expensive polymeric columns or filters. In this article, the potential of microfiltration membranes prepared from differently orientated viscose fibre slivers, infused with ultrafine quaternised (qCNF) and amino-hydrophobised (aCNF) cellulose nanofibrils, were investigated for capturing and deactivating the bacteria from water during vacuum filtration. The morphology and capturing mechanism of the single- and multi-layer structured membranes were evaluated using microscopic imaging and colloidal particles. They were assessed for antibacterial efficacy and the retention of selected bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus), differing in the cell envelope structure, hydrodynamic biovolume (shape and size) and their clustering. The aCNF increased biocidal efficacy significantly when compared to qCNF-integrated membrane, although the latter retained bacteria equally effectively by a thicker multi-layer structured membrane. The retention of bacterial cells occurred through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, as well as via interfibrous pore diffusion, depending on their physicochemical properties. For all bacterial strains, the highest retention (up to 100% or log 6 reduction) at >50 L/h∗bar∗m2 flow rate was achieved with a 4-layer gradient-structured membrane containing different aCNF content, thereby matching the performance of industrial polymeric filters used for removing bacteria.

According to the characteristics of the LEO space particles radiation environment of China’s Fengyun No. 3 (FY-3) polar-orbiting meteorological satellites, in order to monitor the characteristics, and space–time distribution of charged particle radiation in the orbit space, it is proposed to install a three-directional high-energy particle detector (HEPD) in the three vertical orthogonal directions of FY-3E, so as to carry out the energy spectrum and flux observation of high-energy protons and electrons in the three directions of the satellite, namely, −X, +Y, and −Z. The on-orbit detection data acquired by these payloads can be used for space environment modeling and solar-terrestrial physics research, and provide data sources for operational space environment weather warning and forecasting. Through the ground accelerator calibration experiment and simulation analysis of the three-directional HEPDs developed in the flight model phase, the experimental results show that all the HEPDs’ measured values meet the requirements for technical indexes, such as the detection energy range (high-energy protons: 3–300 MeV; high-energy electrons: 0.15–5.7 MeV), energy span accuracy (

Mangrove forest plays a key role in regulating climate change, earth carbon cycling and other biogeochemical processes within blue carbon ecosystems. Therefore, mangrove forests should be incorporated into Earth system climate models with the aim of understanding future climate change. Despite multiple carbon stock and flux assessments taking place over the past couple of decades, concrete knowledge of carbon source/sink patterns is largely lacking, particularly in the biodiversity-rich Asia-Pacific (AP) region with its 68 493 km ^2 of mangrove area. Thus, to understand the gaps in mangrove blue carbon research in the AP region, we summarize a recent decade-long inventory of carbon stock pools (aboveground, belowground and soil) and biogeochemical flux components (burial, export/import, soil-air and water-air CO _2 flux) across 25 AP countries to understand the current knowledge and gaps. While carbon stock assessments of individual components are available for all 25 countries, whole ecosystem carbon stocks—including live and standing dead aboveground and belowground, downed woody debris and soil carbon stocks—are often lacking, even in highly researched countries like Indonesia. There is restricted knowledge around biogeochemical carbon fluxes in 55% of the countries, suggesting poor carbon flux research across the region. Focusing on flux components, reports on sediment-to-sea carbon exports are extremely limited (coming from just nine countries in the AP region). There is notable scarcity of data on carbon export fluxes in Indonesian mangroves. Given the key role AP mangroves play in climate change mitigation worldwide, more detailed and methodologically comparable investigation of biogeochemical source/sink processes is required to better understand the role of this large carbon source in global carbon stocks and fluxes, and hence, global climate.

Parallel artificial membrane permeability analysis (PAMPA) is used to determine the permeability of compounds through concentrated negatively charged phospholipid bilayer barriers. We employed MacroFlux (a scaled-up version of PAMPA) to test the permeation rate of terazosin hydrochloride (TH) tablets and predict in vivo bioequivalence. The dissolution profiles and permeability of one reference formulation, and seven generic TH tablets, were compared. The dissolution profiles of these generic tablets were equivalent to that of the reference drug in four different media. However, the flux and the total permeated amount of some generic TH tablets were below the lower limit of the confidence interval of the original acceptance range in MacroFlux, which implied risk in the bioequivalence test in vivo. We further evaluated potential factors responsible for this discrepancy by µFlux, including active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) permeability and excipient prescriptions. The analysis showed that different properties of API were a main factor leading to biological inequivalence in the MacroFlux assay, while excipient prescriptions did not have an impact on bioequivalence risk. These data indicated that the flux assay may be a helpful as an auxiliary method for predicting bioequivalence of generic drugs and analyze the factors responsible for bioequivalence risk.

In haemodialysis (HD), unwanted substances (uraemic retention solutes or 'uraemic toxins') that accumulate in uraemia are removed from blood by transport across the semipermeable membrane. Like all membrane separation processes, the transport requires driving forces to facilitate the transfer of molecules across the membrane. The magnitude of the transport is quantified by the phenomenon of 'flux', a finite parameter defined as the volume of fluid (or permeate) transferred per unit area of membrane surface per unit time. In HD, as transmembrane pressure is applied to facilitate fluid flow or flux across the membrane to enhance solute removal, flux is defined by the ultrafiltration coefficient (KUF; mL/h/mmHg) reflecting the hydraulic permeability of the membrane. However, in HD, the designation of flux has come to be used in a much broader sense and the term is commonly used interchangeably and erroneously with other measures of membrane separation processes, resulting in considerable confusion. Increased flux is perceived to reflect more 'porous' membranes having 'larger' pores, even though other membrane and therapy attributes determine the magnitude of flux achieved during HD. Adjectival designations of flux (low-, mid-, high-, super-, ultra-) have found indiscriminate usage in the scientific literature to qualify a parameter that influences clinical decision making and prescription of therapy modalities (low-flux or high-flux HD). Over the years the concept and definition of flux has undergone arbitrary and periodic adjustment and redefinition by authors in publications, regulatory bodies (US Food and Drug Administration) and professional association guidelines (European Renal Association, Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative), with little consensus. Industry has stretched the boundaries of flux to derive marketing advantages, justify increased reimbursement or contrive new classes of therapy modalities when in fact flux is just one of several specifications that determine membrane or dialyser performance. Membranes considered as high-flux previously are today at the lower end of the flux spectrum. Further, additional parameters unrelated to the rate of diffusive or convective transport (flux) are used in conjunction with or in place of KUF to allude to flux: clearance (mL/min, e.g. of β2-microglobulin) or sieving coefficients (dimensionless). Considering that clinical trials in nephrology, designed to make therapy recommendations and guide policy with economic repercussions, are based on the parameter flux they merit clarification—by regulatory authorities and scientists alike—to avoid further misappropriation. The elevated satisfaction that comes from interacting with close ties, as opposed to distal ties, is well-established in past research. What remains less clear is how the quality of daily interactions between close versus distal ties may vary as a function of personality. Drawing on data from a 2-week experience sampling study (N = 108 participants, N = 7755 observations), we consider how trait rejection sensitivity (RS)—or the tendency to worry about potential social rejection—interacts with perceived closeness and interaction channel (i.e., face-to-face vs. technology-mediated) in daily life. We find that individuals who are high (vs. low) in rejection sensitivity not only view distal tie interactions as less satisfying, they also perceive close tie exchanges as more enjoyable and supportive—but only for technology-mediated (vs. face-to-face) interactions. We also find that individuals who are high in rejection sensitivity have higher variability in the perceived quality of their interactions. These findings demonstrate the interlocked factors of personality tendencies, perceived closeness, and interaction channel in shaping the variability in the quality of daily interactions. In limnological studies of temperate lakes, most studies of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions have focused on summer measurements of gas fluxes despite the importance of shoulder seasons to annual emissions. This is especially pertinent to dimictic, small lakes that maintain anoxic conditions and turnover quickly in the spring and fall. We examined CO2 and CH4 dynamics from January to October 2020 in a small humic lake in northern Wisconsin, United States through a combination of discrete sampling and high frequency buoy and eddy covariance data collection. Eddy covariance flux towers were installed on buoys at the center of the lake while it was still frozen to continually measure CO2 and CH4 across seasons. Despite evidence for only partial turnover during the spring, there was still a notable 19‐day pulse of CH4 emissions after lake ice melted with an average daytime flux rate of 8–30 nmol CH4 m−2 s−1. Our estimate of CH4 emissions during the spring pulse was 16 mmol CH4 m−2 compared to 22 mmol CH4 m−2 during the stratified period from June to August. We did not observe a linear accumulation of gases under‐ice in our sampling period during the late winter, suggesting the complexity of this dynamic period and the emphasis for direct measurements throughout the ice‐covered period. The results of our study help to better understand the magnitude and timing of greenhouse gas emissions in a region expected to experience warmer winters with decreased ice duration. Plain Language Summary: A large portion of greenhouse gas emissions from lakes occurs during ice‐melt when manual sampling can be too dangerous and during fall mixing when it can occur too quickly to fully capture. Significant amounts of gas can accumulate in the bottom waters without oxygen availability and quickly release as the lake mixes during the spring and fall. We measured dissolved carbon dioxide and methane concentrations in the water column below ice and throughout the open water period from January to October 2020 in a small lake in northern Wisconsin, United States. We combined manual sampling of gas concentrations in the lake with nearly continuous measurements of the flux of methane between the lake and the atmosphere from before ice‐melt to late October 2020. During the late under‐ice period, we did not observe an increase in gases over time, calling for more high frequency measurements during this dynamic period. Further, despite observing only partial lake mixing in the spring, we still measured elevated methane emissions over a 19‐day period after ice‐off. With predicted decreases in ice duration due to warming temperatures, the role of shoulder seasons to the annual budget of greenhouse gases in lakes will continue to be important. This article focuses on the study of voids in the solder joint interface of flip-chip LEDs. Additional flux is added to the solder paste to reduce the frequency of voids, and the mechanical properties of the solder joints are compared and analyzed. Two kinds of fluxes (NC559-TPF, TSF-6516) are selected. They are used in two kinds of solder pastes (lead and lead-free solder paste). The amount of flux added is 0 mL, 0.4 mL, and 0.8 mL. The other preparation conditions for all combinations are the same and are within the recommended scope of the manufacturer's documentation. X-rays are used to detect and analyze the distribution and quantity of voids in the solder layer. A push–pull tester is used to analyze and evaluate the mechanical strength of the solder joints. A scanning electron microscope was used to observe the microscopic morphology of the cross-section of the solder joint and the fracture morphology of the interface after the shear test. It was found that adding a proper amount of high-activity flux to the solder paste can reduce the frequency of voids and improve the mechanical reliability of the solder joints. The occurrence forms of carbon (TC and Corg) in black soil of Northeast China are studied by using high frequency infrared carbon-sulfur analyzer, with the optimization of test conditions such as sample weight and addition amount of pure iron and tungsten fluxes. It is concluded that the test result of carbon occurrence form in black soil is the best with 0.05 g of sample weight, 0.5 g of pure iron flux amount of and 1.0gof pure tungsten flux amount. The certified soil standard substances are analyzed by the above method, and the results are all within the range of uncertainty, with the relative error between measured value and standard value of -5.00% to +2.69% and relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 6.29%. The test results of actual black soil samples by the above method are basically consistent with those by the method of Geology and Mineral Industry Standard (DZ/T0279.27--2016), which is suitable for the analysis of carbon occurrence forms in black soil of Northeast China. Single crystals of Cs-intercalated NbS2 (CsxNbS2) were synthesized using a CsCl/KCl self-flux. The size and Cs content of CsxNbS2 single crystals increased upon adding Cd metal into the starting materials. When 10–30 at% of Cd per Nb was provided in the starting materials, plate-like CsxNbS2 (x ∼ 0.3) single crystals with 1–2 mm in size and 10–100 μm in thickness were obtained. The influence of the welding energy-technological modes on the physical and mechanical properties of weld seams obtained by submerged arc welding, made on the basis of silicomanganese slag, is determined. Various welding modes allows the required penetration depth and the absence of external defects is investigated. It is shown that changes in the current strength value, welding speed and voltage exert influence upon the physical and mechanical properties of the weld seam and the hydrogen concentration in the weld seam. The discharge of reject brine from seawater desalination processes is a threat to marine ecosystems. This study investigated the feasibility of forward osmosis (FO) for the treatment of reject brine from multi‐effect distillation (MED) systems. The performances of two commercial FO membranes (ie, cellulose triacetate (CTA) and polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membranes) were compared. The effects of operating conditions, such as draw solution concentration, cross‐flow velocity, and temperature, on concentration polarization and consequently on the water flux, were quantitatively analyzed using a mathematical model. Results showed that the batch FO process could effectively reduce the volume of MED brine to 54.9% using 3 mol/L NaCl. As the draw solution concentration increased from 1‐5 mol/L, a significant increase in the initial water flux from 3.23‐17.88 L · m−2 · h−1 and from 3.55‐24.04 L · m−2 · h−1 was observed for the CTA and TFC membranes, respectively. However, the proportions of the effective osmotic pressure differences decreased from 20.7% to 11.9% and from 23.5% to 6.2% for the CTA and TFC membranes, respectively, indicating the concentration polarization (CP) was severe for high‐salinity brine treatment. The positive effects of increasing cross‐flow velocity on CP were limited. Moreover, the high temperature of the MED brine effectively mitigated the internal concentration polarization (ICP), thereby enhancing the water flux. Peatlands are responsible for the majority of methane (CH4) emission from wetlands globally. Hydrological changes induced by climatic and anthropogenic disturbance may substantially alter CH4 emission in peatlands. Here we measured CH4 emission monthly for 1.5 years in natural, drained and restored shrub bogs in North Carolina, USA. Methane emissions from all sites were consistently low (< 0.05 mg CH4 m− 2 h− 1). We occasionally detected markedly higher CH4 emissions (> 1 mg CH4 m− 2 h− 1) at sites where the water level remained close to the ground surface for 2–3 months, suggesting that surface litter mostly, not deep peat, contributes to CH4 emission. We verified this inference by incubating 2-cm sections of peat sliced from intact soil cores for 6 months. Only the saturated surface litter emitted CH4, which indicated a 5-cm threshold of ground water level for CH4 emission in our shrub bogs. During a wet year, water levels in the wet sites (natural and restored) remained at least 5 cm below soil surface for about 90 % of the days. We thus demonstrate the CH4 emission is negligible from these shrub bogs. This study also indicates that restoration through a non-inundated rewetting would not stimulate CH4 emission in drained/degraded low-latitude shrub bogs, such as pocosins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The domain of the surface ocean and lower atmosphere is a complex, highly dynamic component of the Earth system. Better understanding of the physics and biogeochemistry of the air-sea interface and the processes that control the exchange of mass and energy across that boundary define the scope of the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) project. The scientific questions driving SOLAS research, as laid out in the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy for the period 2004-2014, are highly challenging, inherently multidisciplinary and broad. During that decade, SOLAS has significantly advanced our knowledge. Discoveries related to the physics of exchange, global trace gas budgets and atmospheric chemistry, the CLAW hypothesis (named after its authors, Charlson, Lovelock, Andreae and Warren), and the influence of nutrients and ocean productivity on important biogeochemical cycles, have substantially changed our views of how the Earth system works and revealed knowledge gaps in our understanding. As such SOLAS has been instrumental in contributing to the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) mission of identification and assessment of risks posed to society and ecosystems by major changes in the Earth's biological, chemical and physical cycles and processes during the Anthropocene epoch. SOLAS is a bottom-up organization, whose scientific priorities evolve in response to scientific developments and community needs, which has led to the launch of a new 10-year phase. SOLAS (2015-2025) will focus on five core science themes that will provide a scientific basis for understanding and projecting future environmental change and for developing tools to inform societal decision-making.

Atmospheric composition is governed by the interplay of emissions, chemistry, deposition, and transport. Substantial questions surround each of these processes, especially in forested environments with strong biogenic emissions. Utilizing aircraft observations acquired over a forest in the southeast U.S., we calculate eddy covariance fluxes for a suite of reactive gases and apply the synergistic information derived from this analysis to quantify emission and deposition fluxes, oxidant concentrations, aerosol uptake coefficients, and other key parameters. Evaluation of results against state-of-the-science models and parameterizations provides insight into our current understanding of this system and frames future observational priorities. As a near-direct measurement of fundamental process rates, airborne fluxes offer a new tool to improve biogenic and anthropogenic emissions inventories, photochemical mechanisms, and deposition parameterizations. The Narmada River is one of the largest rivers in Western India encompassing a watershed area of 92,672 km2. It is one of the most important rivers for water needs of the state of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh. The climate of the basin is humid and tropical but region surrounding this river watershed is predominantly dry and resembles semi-arid conditions. The population inside the states covering this watershed increased by an average of 23% from 1991 to 2011 causing multitude of water scarcity and water quality deterioration issues. These problems were caused by increase in sewage waste and untreated industrial discharge dumped into the river stream along with chemical fertilizers washing off from the farmlands flowing into the river. While there are several studies that model the watershed hydrology and water balance components, there has been no study that analyses the transport of nutrients inside the watershed. This study aims at using a semi-distributed hydrological model—Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to model the nitrogen (NO2 + NO3) transport and distribution inside the basin for 2001–2019. Nutrients and discharge data from Central Water Commission (CWC) of India were used to build this model along with other required input forcing obtained through remotely sensed datasets. We found that the subbasins near boundary of the Narmada watershed are experiencing significant increase in nitrogen concentrations at an estimated rate of 0.0001–0.002 mg/L/yr. The potential reason for such increase is high rate of conversion of forested land to agricultural land causing usage of fertilizers that are rich in nitrogen.

The article intends to analyze the data collected in 21 files concerning the charges for drug trafficking in 2017, in the State Justice of Unaí (Minas Gerais, Brazil). The research is based on a retrospective flux analysis that evidenced the data concerning the cases and the profile of the defendants. The hypothesis is that the criminal justice system is selective and focuses on the prosecution of the people involved in small drug dealing activities, what is inferred from the profiles of the cases and defendants brought to the State local Justice. It was detected that 100% of the cases initiated in the flagrante delicto. Among that, 58% departed of previous anonymous notice brought to the Police and 21% as a consequence of the Military Police patrol routine. Another important data is that in 86% of the criminal files just one defendant was accused. In summary, the defendants are men (87%), black (71%), mostly inhabitants of the town (62.5%), between 18 and 24 years old (54.16%). In 46% of the cases the defendant did not have even basic education and none of the defendants completed high school. The conclusions of our investigation confirm the results of the research field concerning the prosecution of drug trafficking in the criminal justice system in Brazil.

Understanding the responses of canopy conductance (gc) to environmental factors would help ecologists to obtain further insight into the carbon and water exchange processes and forecast future changes in ecosystems under global climate change. Therefore, we investigated the seasonal and interannual variations in the gc based on 12 years of flux data that were observed by an eddy covariance system in a subtropical coniferous forest. Furthermore, by teasing out the dominant factors step by step, the specific gc responses to environmental factors were clarified, and the divergent responses in contrasting climatic years were determined. The multiyear mean gc was 3.46 ± 0.36 mm·s−1, and the gc peaked in April and declined to a minimum in October in most years. The vapor pressure deficit (VPD) was the most important factor that inhibited the gc, and the gc decreased sharply when the VPDs were greater than 1.8 kPa. Without high VPD stress, the gc increased linearly with air temperature (Ta) when the Ta was below 27 °C, after which it decreased. When the high VPD and Ta stresses were excluded, the gc increased with the net radiation (Rn) following a logistic growth model. The gc increased logarithmically with the soil water content at 5 cm depth (SWC5). The effects of the soil water content at 50 cm depth (SWC50) emerged under water stress or temperature stress conditions, which indicated that the forest utilized deep soil water to defend against environmental stress. Additionally, divergent responses of the gc to environmental factors in different climatic years were found. The results of this study provide detailed information on the gc variations and their specific responses to the environmental factors, which would improve the understanding of gc and help accurately estimate gc.

One of the most crucial tasks of measuring top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiative flux is to understand the relationships between radiances and fluxes, particularly for the reflected shortwave (SW) fluxes. The radiance-to-flux conversion is accomplished by constructing angular distribution models (ADMs). This conversion depends on solar-viewing geometries as well as the scene types within the field of view. To date, the most comprehensive observation-based ADMs are developed using the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observations. These ADMs are used to derive TOA SW fluxes from CERES and other Earth radiation budget instruments which observe the Earth mostly from side-scattering angles. The Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) onboard Deep Space Climate Observatory observes the Earth at the Lagrange-1 point in the near-backscattering directions and offers a testbed for the CERES ADMs. As the EPIC relative azimuth angles change from 168◦ to 178◦, the global daytime mean SW radiances can increase by as much as 10% though no notable cloud changes are observed. Understanding the feedback of ecosystem carbon uptake on climate change at temporal and spatial scales is crucial for developing ecosystem models. Previous studies have focused on the role of spring and autumn phenology in regulating carbon sequestration in forest stands, but few on the impact of physiological status in summer. However, plant accumulated the most carbon in summer compared with spring and autumn, therefore, it is of great significance to explore the role of summer phenological metrics on the variability of carbon sequestration. Using 514 site-years of flux data obtained at 40 FLUXNET sites including three forest ecosystems (i.e. evergreen needleleaf forest (ENF), deciduous broadleaf forest (DBF) and mixed forest (MF)) in Europe and North America, we compared the potential of physiological and phenological metrics of Gross Primary Production (GPP) and Ecosystem Respiration (RECO) in explaining the interannual and spatial variability (IAV and SV) of forest net ecosystem production (NEP). In view of the better performance of physiological metrics, we developed the maximum carbon uptake index (MCUI), which integrated the physiology metrics of photosynthesis and respiration in summer, and further explored its ability in explaining the IAV and SV of NEP. The results suggest that the MCUI had a better ability than respiration-growth length ratio (RGR) in predicting NEP for all three forest types. The interpretation of MCUI based on meteorological variables illustrated that the controlling meteorological factors of MCUI differed substantially among ecosystems. The summer shortwave radiation had the greatest influence on MCUI at DBF sites, while the soil water content played an important but opposite role at ENF and DBF sites, and no significant meteorological driver was found at MF sites. The higher potential of MCUI in explaining IAV and SV of NEP highlights the importance of summer physiology in controlling the forest carbon sequestration, and further confirms the significant role of peak plant growth in regulating carbon cycle of forest ecosystems. Understanding the drivers of peak plant growth is therefore of a great significance for further improving the precious of ecosystem model in the future.
