Multi-stable elements are commonly employed to design reconfigurable and adaptive structures, because they enable large and reversible shape changes in response to changing loads, while simultaneously allowing self-locking capabilities. However, existing multi-stable structures have properties that depend on their initial design and cannot be tailored post-fabrication. Here, a novel design approach is presented that combines multi-stable structures with two-way shape memory polymers. By leveraging both the one-way and two-way shape memory effect under bi-axial strain conditions, the structures can re-program their 3D shape, bear loads, and self-actuate. Results demonstrate that the structures' shape and stiffness can be tuned post-fabrication at the user's need and the multi-stability can be suppressed or activated on command. The control of multi-stability prevents undesired snapping of the structures and enables higher load-bearing capability, compared to conventional multi-stable systems. The proposed approach offers the possibility to augment the functionality of existing multi-stable concepts, showing potential for the realization of highly adaptable mechanical structures that can reversibly switch between being mono and multi-stable and that can undergo shape changes in response to a change in temperature., (© 2024 The Authors. Polymers have the potential to replace metallic or bioprosthetic heart valve components due to superior durability and inertness while allowing for native tissue-like flexibility. Despite these appealing properties, certain polymers such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK) have issues with hemocompatibility, which have previously been addressed through assorted complex processes. In this paper, we explore the enhancement of PEEK hemocompatibility with polymer crystallinity. Amorphous, semi-crystalline and crystalline PEEK are investigated in addition to a highly crystalline carbon fiber (CF)/PEEK composite material (CFPEEK). The functional group density of the PEEK samples is determined, showing that higher crystallinity results in increased amount of surface carbonyl functional groups. The increase of crystallinity (and negatively charged groups) appears to cause significant reductions in platelet adhesion (33 vs. 1.5 % surface coverage), hemolysis (1.55 vs. 0.75 %∙cm -2 ), and thrombin generation rate (4840 vs. 1585 mU/mL/min/cm 2 ). In combination with the hemocompatibility study, mechanical characterization demonstrates that tailoring crystallinity is a simple and effective method to control both hemocompatibility and mechanical performance of PEEK. Heart failure is a raising cause of mortality. Heart transplantation and ventricular assist device (VAD) support represent the only available lifelines for end stage disease. In the context of donor organ shortage, the future role of VAD as destination therapy is emerging. Yet, major drawbacks are connected to the long-term implantation of current devices. Poor VAD hemocompatibility exposes the patient to life-threatening events, including haemorrhagic syndromes and thrombosis. Here, we introduce a new concept of artificial support, the Hybrid Membrane VAD, as a first-of-its-kind pump prototype enabling physiological blood propulsion through the cyclic actuation of a hyperelastic membrane, enabling the protection from the thrombogenic interaction between blood and the implant materials. The centre of the luminal membrane surface displays a rationally-developed surface topography interfering with flow to support a living endothelium. The precast cell layer survives to a range of dynamically changing pump actuating conditions i.e., actuation frequency from 1 to 4 Hz, stroke volume from 12 to 30 mL, and support duration up to 313 min, which are tested both in vitro and in vivo, ensuring the full retention of tissue integrity and connectivity under challenging conditions. In summary, the presented results constitute a proof of principle for the Hybrid Membrane VAD concept and represent the basis for its future development towards clinical validation.

Pulsatile positive displacement pumps as ventricular assist devices were gradually replaced by rotary devices due to their large volume and high adverse event rates. Nevertheless, pulsatile ventricular assist devices might be beneficial with regard to gastrointestinal bleeding and cardiac recovery. Therefore, aim of this study was to investigate the flow field in new pulsatile ventricular assist devices concepts with an increased pump frequency, which would allow lower stroke volumes to reduce the pump size. We developed a novel elliptically shaped pulsatile ventricular assist devices, which we compared to a design based on a circular shape. The pump size was adjusted to deliver similar flow rates at pump frequencies of 80, 160, and 240 bpm. Through a computational fluid dynamics study, we investigated flow patterns, residence times, and wall shear stresses for different frequencies and pump sizes. A pump size reduction by almost 50% is possible when using a threefold pump frequency. We show that flow patterns inside the circular pump are frequency dependent, while they remain similar for the elliptic pump. With slightly increased wall shear stresses for higher frequencies, maximum wall shear stresses on the pump housing are higher for the circular design (42.2 Pa vs 18.4 Pa). The calculated blood residence times within the pump decrease significantly with increasing pump rates. A smaller pump size leads to a slight increase of wall shear stresses and a significant improvement of residence times. Hence, high-frequency operation of pulsatile ventricular assist devices, especially in combination with an elliptical shape, might be a feasible mean to reduce the size, without any expectable disadvantages in terms of hemocompatibility.

The development of programmable self-shaping materials enables the onset of new and innovative functionalities in many application fields. Commonly, shape adaptation is achieved by exploiting diffusion-driven swelling or nano-scale phase transition, limiting the change of shape to slow motion predominantly determined by the environmental conditions and/or the materials specificity. To address these shortcomings, we report shape adaptable programmable shells that undergo morphing via a snap-through mechanism inspired by the Dionaea muscipula leaf, known as the Venus fly trap. The presented shells are composite materials made of epoxy reinforced by stiff anisotropic alumina micro-platelets oriented in specific directions. By tailoring the microstructure via magnetically-driven alignment of the platelets, we locally tune the pre-strain and stiffness anisotropy of the composite. This novel approach enables the fabrication of complex shapes showing non-orthotropic curvatures and stiffness gradients, radically extending the design space when compared to conventional long-fibre reinforced multi-stable composites. The rare combination of large stresses, short actuation times and complex shapes, results in hinge-free artificial shape adaptable systems with large design freedom for a variety of morphing applications.
