A Government-backed task force established in Aug. 1995 to examine ways of turning Britain into a share-owning democracy is expected to recommend that a personal finance money management course be introduced into the secondary school curriculum as an examination subject. The committee, which is led by financier Sir Mark Weinberg and includes directors from major City organisations, will tell ministers that the world of work has become so precarious that youngsters risk financial disaster unless they are taught how to take responsibility for their own financial affairs.

A Secondary Heads Assn. survey of the state of the expressive arts in nearly 600 British schools reveals that while curricular provision at key stage 4 has remained stable in most schools since 1990, 27% of schools experience revenue problems for the arts. National Foundation for Arts Education Chmn. Dr Kenneth Robinson is not alone in arguing that whole areas of a child's development are left untapped if the arts are neglected, yet an arts subject at GCSE is optional in most schools. Schools are directly responsible for ensuring the future of arts education but are hampered by funding cuts.

Pupils at 12 schools in Cleveland, England, are learning about road safety as part of the Ignition project run by the British School of Motoring (BSM). The project, which is entering its third year in 1994, is funded by Middlesbrough City Challenge with backing from insurance company Norwich Union. Joy-riders are barred from the course which includes weekly driving instruction on a go-kart track. The Ignition project has been successful in its original aim of cutting car crime and the emphasis has shifted to road safety. Teaching now takes place in school time as part of citizenship classes.
