New results on the differential cross section in deuteron-proton elastic scattering are obtained at the deuteron kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV with the HADES spectrometer. The angular range of 69° - 125° in the center of mass system is covered. The obtained results are compared with the relativistic multiple scattering model calculation using the CD-Bonn deuteron wave function. The data at fixed scattering angles in the c.m. are in qualitative agreement with the constituent counting rules prediction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A high-statistic data sample of Ar(1.76 AGeV)+KCl events recorded with HADES is used to search for a hypertriton signal. An upper production limit per centrality-triggered event of $ 1.04\times 10^{-3}$ on the 3 $ \sigma$ level is derived. Comparing this value with the number of successfully reconstructed $ \Lambda$ hyperons allows to determine an upper limit on the ratio $ N_{_{\Lambda}^{3}H}/N_{\Lambda}$ , which is confronted with statistical and coalescence-type model calculations. We present the results of a study of charged-pion production in
12 C +12 C collisions at incident beam energies of 1A GeV and 2A GeV using the HADES spectrometer at GSI. The main emphasis of the HADES program is on the dielectron signal from the early phase of the collision. Here, however, we discuss the data with respect to the emission of charged hadrons, specifically the production of $ \pi^{{\pm}}_{}$ mesons, which are related to neutral pions representing a dominant contribution to the dielectron yield. We have performed the first large-angular-range measurement of the distribution of $ \pi^{{\pm}}_{}$ mesons for the12 C +12 C collision system covering a fairly large rapidity interval. The pion yields, transverse-mass and angular distributions are compared with calculations done within a transport model, as well as with existing data from other experiments. The anisotropy of pion production is systematically analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

See paper for full list of authors,; We present data on dielectron emission in proton induced reactions on a Nb target at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy measured with HADES installed at GSI. The data represent the first high statistics measurement of proton-induced dielectron radiation from cold nuclear matter in a kinematic regime, where strong medium effects are expected. Combined with the good mass resolution of 2%, it is the first measurement sensitive to changes of the spectral functions of vector mesons, as predicted by models for hadrons at rest or small relative momenta. Comparing the e+e− invariant mass spectra to elementary p + p data, we observe for e+e− momenta Pee0.8 GeV/c) and are not conclusive yet. For the ρ meson, the CLAS experiment at JLab [13] reports a slight broadening and no shift of the ρ pole mass in photon induced reactions, while the E325 experiment at KEK [14] deduced a shift but no broadening in proton induced reactions. For the ω and ϕ mesons, experiments [15], [16], [17] and [18] report a sizable collisional broadening (up to a factor 16 larger than the natural line width in case of the ω) inside the medium extracted by comparing the nuclear modification of the cross sections to microscopic transport models. Besides the complications due to additional yield fed by pion driven secondary collisions inside the nucleus, the disadvantage of these indirect measurements is their model dependence. For instance, the recent analysis of [19] led to a significantly different width of the ω meson inside the medium as extracted in [15]. In this Letter we report on inclusive e+e− pair production in proton induced reactions at Ekin=3.5 GeV on the nucleus Nb, representing the first high statistics measurement with small momenta of e+e− pairs relative to the medium (Pee

Research work was done during the reporting period on the two-part research program: (A) to improve energy conservation through increased unit and system efficiencies, energy management, and system optimization, and (B) to develop a novel, low-cost hybrid photovoltaic/thermal absorber. Performance tests were conducted on all the boilers and chillers on campus. Several corrective measures were indicated and implemented. A detailed survey of energy use by functions and consumption/demand study has been in progress. A preliminary computer simulation model of the entire campus has been developed and made operational. It has been demonstrated both analytically and experimentally that the reradiation losses from the absorber can be reduced significantly by utilizing a light-pipe absorber. Two paraboloidal dishes, one of 6 ft diameter and the other of 20 ft diameter have been utilized. Collector efficiencies have been measured at coolant outlet temperatures up to 282/sup 0/C with a square light-pipe absorber and with 6 ft diameter concentrator. Laser ray testing was conducted on both the 6 ft and 20 ft diameter concentrators. Design of the total energy absorber has been completed.

The HADES experiment, installed at GSI, Darmstadt, measures di-electron production in A+A, p/pi+N and p/pi+A collisions. Here, the pi0 and eta Dalitz decays have been reconstructed in the exclusive p+p reaction at 2.2 GeV to form a reference cocktail for long-lived di-electron sources. In the C+C reaction at 1 and 2 GeV/u, these long-lived sources have been subtracted from the measured inclusive e+e- yield to exhibit the signal from the early phase of the collision. The results suggest that resonances play an important role in dense nuclear matter., Comment: Invited plenary talk at the 10th International Workshop On Meson Production, Properties And Interaction (MESON 2008) 6-10 Jun 2008, Cracow, Poland

Results of a study of dielectron and pion production in p + Nb collisions at incident proton beam energy 3.5 GeV are presented. The data are taken by the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI Darmstadt. The dielectron invariant mass distributions are compared to data from elementary p+p reactions at the same beam energy. At this energy above the light vector meson production threshold, the omega peak is clearly identified. The collected statistics and high acceptance for pair momenta within the interval 50-2000 MeV/c allow for a study of momentum dependence of the omega yield and spectral shape. The strongest medium modification in the line shape is expected for low momenta mesons decaying inside the nuclear matter. Comparing the measured p+Nb data with the p+p reference experiment results, the signifficant change in yield of low momenta dielectron pairs in the vector meson mass region is observed. Data on charged pi meson emission, which are related to neutral pions representing a dominant contribution to the dielectron yield, are shown as well. They contribute to the results from systematic studies of the pion production in the proton-nucleus collisions, which point to a transition of the pion source from simple NN collisions to emission of thermalized pions from a fireball, when increasing the atomic number of the target nucleus. The data also serve as a reliable tool for normalization of the dielectron data.

- Abstract
Significant isospin effects are observed by the HADES collaboration in inclusive dilepton production channels in the pp and quasi free np experiments at 1.25 GeV kinetic beam energy. Triggered by this observation, analyses of several exclusive channels within either dilepton or pion production have been started to shed more light on the possible explanations. Furthermore, the exclusive p+p− production in np and pp collisions provide tests for a consistent description of double pion production in different isospin states, which is necessary to understand contributions of the double Δ(1232) and N*(1440) production. This is also important in the context of the recent results from the WASA collaboration on the ABC effect with reference to a d* dibaryon resonance in isospin 0 channel.

New results on the differential cross section in deuteron-proton elastic scattering are obtained at the deuteron kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV with the HADES spectrometer. The angular range of 69°-125° in the center of mass system is covered. The obtained results are compared with the relativistic multiple scattering model calculation using the CD-Bonn deuteron wave function. The data at fixed scattering angles in the c.m. are in qualitative agreement with the constituent counting rules prediction.

Baryon resonance production in proton-proton collisions at a kinetic beam energy of 1.25 GeV is investigated. The multi-differential data were measured by the HADES collaboration. Exclusive channels with one pion in the final state ($np\pi^{+}$ and $pp\pi^{0}$) were put to extended studies based on various observables in the framework of a one-pion exchange model and with solutions obtained within the framework of a partial wave analysis (PWA) of the Bonn-Gatchina group. The results of the PWA confirm the dominant contribution of the $\Delta$(1232), yet with a sizable impact of the $N$(1440) and non-resonant partial waves., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

First results of the differential cross section in dp elastic scattering at 1.25 GeV/u measured with the HADES over a large angular range are reported. The obtained data corresponds to large transverse momenta, where a high sensitivity to the two-nucleon and three-nucleon short-range correlations is expected., Comment: Talk given at the XX-th International Baldin Seminar on High Energy Physics Problems "Relativistic Nuclear Physics and Quantum Chromodynamics", JINR, Dubna, Russia, October 4-9, 2010

The centrality determination for Au + Au collisions at 1.23A GeV, as measured with HADES at the GSI-SIS18, is described. In order to extract collision geometry related quantities, such as the average impact parameter or number of participating nucleons, a Glauber Monte Carlo approach is employed. For the application of this model to collisions at this relatively low centre-of-mass energy of s NN =2.42
GeV special investigations were performed. As a result a well defined procedure to determine centrality classes for ongoing analyses of heavy-ion data is established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] - Published

We investigate identical pion HBT intensity interferometry in central Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV. High-statistics π−π− and π+π+ data are measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The radius parameters, derived from the correlation function depending on relative momenta in the longitudinally comoving system and parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, are studied as function of transverse momentum. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, particularly pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted source parameters agree well with a smooth extrapolation of the center-of-mass energy dependence established at higher energies, extending the corresponding excitation functions down towards a very low energy.

We present first data on sub-threshold production of Ks0 mesons and Λ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV. We observe an universal 〈Apart〉 scaling of hadrons containing strangeness, independent of their corresponding production thresholds. Comparing the yields, their 〈Apart〉 scaling, and the shapes of the rapidity and the pt spectra to state-of-the-art transport model (UrQMD, HSD, IQMD) predictions, we find that none of them can simultaneously describe these observables with reasonable χ2 values.

The production of Σ0 baryons in the nuclear reaction p (3.5 GeV) + Nb (corresponding to sNN=3.18 GeV) is studied with the detector set-up HADES at GSI, Darmstadt. Σ0s were identified via the decay Σ0→Λγ with subsequent decays Λ→pπ− in coincidence with a e+e− pair from either external (γ→e+e−) or internal (Dalitz decay γ⁎→e+e−) gamma conversions. High-statistics π - π - and π + π + femtoscopy data are presented for Au + Au collisions at s NN = 2.4 GeV , measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The experimental correlation functions allow the determination of the space-time extent of the corresponding emission sources via a comparison to models. The emission source, parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, is studied in dependence on pair transverse momentum, azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane, collision centrality and beam energy. For all centralities and transverse momenta, a geometrical distribution of ellipsoidal shape is found in the plane perpendicular to the beam direction with the larger extension perpendicular to the reaction plane. For large transverse momenta, the corresponding eccentricity approaches the initial eccentricity. The eccentricity is smallest for most central collisions, where the shape is almost circular. The magnitude of the tilt angle of the emission ellipsoid in the reaction plane decreases with increasing centrality and increasing transverse momentum. All source radii increase with centrality, largely exhibiting a linear rise with the cube root of the number of participants. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, appearing most pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted source parameters are consistent with the extrapolation of their energy dependence down from higher energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent reports of warming trends in the Red Sea raise concerns about the response of the basin's fragile ecosystem under an increasingly warming climate. Using a variety of available Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data sets, we investigate the evolution of Red Sea SST in relation to natural climate variability. Analysis of long‐term SST data sets reveals a sequence of alternating positive and negative trends, with similar amplitudes and a periodicity of nearly 70 years associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. High warming rates reported recently appear to be a combined effect of global warming and a positive phase of natural SST oscillations. Over the next decades, the SST trend in the Red Sea purely related to global warming is expected to be counteracted by the cooling Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation phase. Regardless of the current positive trends, projections incorporating long‐term natural oscillations suggest a possible decreasing effect on SST in the near future. Plain Language Summary: The recent warming trend of the Red Sea SST is critical for the fragile basin's ecosystem, especially for its precious coral reef community. Several studies based on satellite‐era data sets recently reported warming rates that can rapidly alter the environmental status of the Red Sea in the near future. We show that the long‐term variation of the SST over the Red Sea is influenced by a natural oscillation related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. Satellite‐era data sets coincide with a positive phase of this oscillation and the associated SST trend is overstated compared to the real, long term trend. As Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation currently shifts from positive to negative phase, the Red Sea SST is expected to shift into a cooling phase during the next decades. Key Points: The Red Sea SST exhibits long‐term oscillations related to the Atlantic Multidecadal OscillationHigh warming trends for the period 1980 to 2010 are dominated by a positive phase of the natural SST oscillationSST over the Red Sea is expected to shift to a cooling phase during the next few decades [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] • Rose bengal (RB) shows weak interactions with hydrophobic domains of lipid bilayer. • RB interacts with the membrane surface, but cannot cross cellular membranes. • Cellular uptake of RB requires activity of organic anion transporting polypeptides. Due to its fluorescent properties and high yield of singlet oxygen, rose bengal (RB) is one of the most promising photosensitizers for cancer treatment. However, the negative charge of RB molecule may significantly hamper its intracellular delivery by passive diffusion through the cell membrane. Thus, specific membrane protein transporters may be needed. The organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are a well-characterized group of membrane protein transporters, responsible for cellular uptake of a number of drugs. To our knowledge, this is the first study that evaluates cellular transport of RB mediated by the OATP transporter family. First, electrified liquid–liquid interface, together with biophysical analysis and molecular dynamics simulations were used to characterize the interaction of RB with several models of a cellular membranes. These experiments proved that RB interacts only with the membrane's surface, without spontaneously crossing the lipid bilayer. Evaluation of intracellular uptake of RB by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy showed significant differences in uptake between liver and intestinal cell line models differing in expression of OATP transporters. The use of specific pharmacological inhibitors of OATPs, together with Western blotting and in silico analysis, indicated that OATPs are crucial for cellular uptake of RB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
