Picosecond and nanosecond pulsed laser studies of nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction in solutions of metallophthalocyanines and metallonaphthalocyanines are presented. The role of excited state absorption and dynamics in the singlet and triplet manifolds and the implications for passive optical limiters is discussed. Performance of optical limiters based on metallomacrocylic dyes is presented as are results on hybrid optical limiters employing a tandem combination of dye solution and a semiconductor slab.
