Abstract

We have investigated the nature of ferromagnetic order and phase transitions in two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) layered material, Fe$_4$GeTe$_2$ through measurements of magnetization, magneto-caloric Effect (MCE), and heat capacity. Fe$_4$GeTe$_2$ hosts a complex magnetic phase with two distinct transitions: paramagnetic to ferromagnetic at around $T_\text{C}$ $\sim$ 266 K and another spin reorientation transition (SRT) at around $T_\text{SRT}$ $\sim $ 100 K. The magnetization measurements shows a prominent thermal hysteresis in proximity to $T_\text{SRT}$ at $H\parallel c$, which implies the first-order nature of SRT. Reasonable MCE has been observed around both transition temperatures ( at around $T_\text{C}$, -$\Delta$S$_M^\text{max}$ = 1.95 and 1.99 J.Kg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ and at around $T_\text{SRT}$, -$\Delta$S$_M^\text{max}$= 3.9 and 2.4 J.Kg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ along $H\parallel ab$ and $H\parallel c$ respectively) at 50 kOe magnetic field change. The above results reveal higher MCE value at $T_\text{SRT}$ compared to the values of MCE at $T_\text{C}$. The scaling analysis of MCE at $T_\text{C}$, shows that the rescaled $\Delta$S$_M (T, H)$ follow a universal curve confirming the second-order character of the ferromagnetic transition. The same scaling analysis of MCE breaks down at $T_\text{SRT}$ suggesting that SRT is not a second order phase transition. Abstract

A non-vanishing entropy production rate is one of the defining characteristics of any non-equilibrium system, and several techniques exist to determine this quantity directly from experimental data. The short-time inference scheme, derived from the thermodynamic uncertainty relation, is a recent addition to the list of these techniques. Here we apply this scheme to quantify the entropy production rate in a class of microscopic heat engine models called Brownian gyrators. In particular, we consider models with anharmonic confining potentials. In these cases, the dynamical equations are indelibly non-linear, and the exact dependences of the entropy production rate on the model parameters are unknown. Our results demonstrate that the short-time inference scheme can efficiently determine these dependencies from a moderate amount of trajectory data. Furthermore, the results show that the non-equilibrium properties of the gyrator model with anharmonic confining potentials are considerably different from its harmonic counterpart - especially in set-ups leading to a non-equilibrium dynamics and the resulting gyration patterns., 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

International audience; Parkinson's disease (PD) and the parkinsonian variant of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA-P) are two neurodegenerative diseases which share similar clinical features, particularly in early disease stages. The differential diagnosis can be thus very challenging. Dysarthria is known to be a frequent and early clinical feature of PD and MSA. It can be thus used as a vehicle to provide a vocal biomarker which could help in the differential diagnosis. In particular, distortion of consonants is known to be a frequent impairment in these diseases. The aim of this study is to investigate distinctive patterns in the distortion of voiced obstruents (plosives and fricatives). It is the first study which attempts to examine such distortions in the French language for the purpose of the differential diagnosis between PD and MSA-P (and among the very few studies if we consider all languages). We carry out a perceptual and objective analysis of voiced obstruents extracted from isolated pseudo-words initials. We first show that devoicing is a significant impairment which predominates in MSA-P. We then show that voice onset time (VOT) of voiced plosives (prevoicing duration) can be a complementary feature to improve the accuracy in discrimination between PD and MSA-P.

Abstract

Measurements of any property of a microscopic system are bound to show significant deviations from the average, due to thermal fluctuations. For time-integrated currents such as heat, work, or entropy production in a steady state, it is in fact known that there will be long stretches of fluctuations both above as well as below the average, occurring equally likely at large times. In this paper we demonstrate that for any finite-time measurement in a nonequilibrium steady state—rather counterintuitively—fluctuations below the average are more probable. This discrepancy is found to be higher when the system is further away from equilibrium. For overdamped diffusive processes, there is even an optimal time when time-integrated current fluctuations mostly lie below the average. We demonstrate that these effects are consistent with a nonmonotonic skewness of current fluctuations and provide evidence that they are easily observable in experiments. We also discuss their extensions to discrete space Markov jump processes and implications to biological and synthetic microscopic engines.

Abstract

Molecular profiling of childhood CNS tumors is critical for diagnosis and clinical management, yet tissue access is restricted due to the sensitive tumor location. We developed a targeted deep sequencing platform to detect tumor driver mutations, copy number variations, and heterogeneity in the liquid biome. Here, we present the sensitivity, specificity, and clinical relevance of our minimally invasive platform for tumor mutation profiling in children diagnosed with CNS cancer.

Abstract

The effects of the non-ideality (NI) of classical plasmas on the scattering of positron from the ground state of hydrogen atom have been investigated by solving coupled multi-channel two-body Lippmann–Schwinger equations. Elastic e + - H (1 s) amplitude, Ps(1s) formation amplitude and elastic p - P s (1 s) amplitude are calculated by considering the coupling of e + - H (1 s) and p - P s (1 s) channels. A pseudopotential which is a function of the Debye length and NI parameter is used to describe the effective interaction potential in non-ideal classical plasmas (NICP). Precise eigenfunctions of H(1s) and Ps(1s) under NICP, obtained within the framework of Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle, are used to evaluate the scattering amplitudes. A comprehensive study is made on the changes brought about in the differential and the total cross sections for the e + - H (1 s) elastic scattering, p - P s (1 s) elastic scattering and Ps(1s) formation due to the variation of the NI parameter over a wide range. Abstract

This research paper introspects to understand the impact of digital marketing on the banking sector based on customer perspectives of demographic factors about gender, age, and occupation. Due to the 3rd phase of Covid 19 (Omicron), the banking sector intensified and adopted digitalization for consumers in times of new normal. It adopted new developments to enhance the ease of accessibility, and to make it consumer-friendly. Because of the fear of the pandemic and its tragic consequences, it enabled in affecting the consumer's perspective. The paper is an exploratory study conducted to know the impact of demographic factors on banking transactions based on the database collected from 100 consumers online; through a questionnaire; besides a few selected interviews. It adopted a mixed method to reach the conclusion by holding ANOVA tests. It identified that there is a significant difference between gender and mode of banking and there is a significant difference between age and post services facilities provided by the banks. Abstract

While most metal-based nanomaterials lack regulatory approval for clinical applications in pharmacology, the FDA-approved Feraheme (ferumoxytol) has been among the few exceptions. Further, the approval of several iron nanoparticles (NPs) in nanotherapeutics has inspired the need to develop a new immunoprotective biomaterial (BM) involving superparamagnetic iron oxide NPs. This article emphasizes the impact of superparamagnetic NPs on porphyrins in the capacity of intensifying their biological activities under biocompatible conditions. To explore the cancer photodynamic therapy (PDT) and post-PDT anti-inflammatory and immunoprotective significance in developing BMs as anti-cancer drugs, the photobiological significance of a hydrophilic BM of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 NP functionalized with a tri-pyridyl porphyrin photosensitizer (PS) through a flexible 4-phenylaminoacetic acid linker is investigated. Fluorescence confocal microscopy with spectral imaging indicated high uptake of the BM Fe3O4 NP-porphyrin (C-NP) in the human gastric cancer (AGS) cell line. The potential of the synthesized BM to promote apoptosis through the upregulation of p21 expression and sub-G0-G1 phase arrest of the cell cycle has been reported. Under PDT conditions, higher apoptosis rates were obtained by C-NP than its free base precursor C. The Fe3O4 NPs have been found to influence the porphyrin PS by enhancing their anti-inflammatory properties apparently by reducing nitric oxide (under light irradiation and in the dark), myeloperoxidase, and superoxide production in murine macrophages. Abstract

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a polyphagous non-native pest identified as a serious threat to crop production and food security globally, including in India. Its unintentional introduction and quick coverage in large areas is a serious concern to millions of farmers in the eastern Himalayan region. However, detailed understanding of farmers' perceptions and the biological attributes associated with the meteorological factors for FAW is limited. The present investigation, which aimed to create baseline data on this pest, concurs with the idea that the FAW is widely dispersed throughout the maize ecosystems of Tripura, with an average infestation rate of 21.33 percent. The severity ranged from 0 to 1.40, with an average leaf damage score of 1 on a 0–4 categorical scale. The findings indicate that pheromone trap catch was significantly correlated with the evaporation rate as other meteorological factors influenced variably. The biological attributes imply that the life cycle was completed in 32.82 ± 0.08 days, with a high fecundity potential (1068.57 ± 4.35 numbers) in controlled conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 5% RH). Indigenous natural enemies, such as entomopathogens, spiders, and wasps, were found to be the first defence against this invasive pest. A minority of the population (17.51%) was aware of the incidence of FAW. Furthermore, respondents' socio-demographic variables were associated significantly with FAW status. This is the first scientific report from the eastern Himalayan region about farmers' knowledge and awareness of the invasiveness of FAW. This finding enumerates a detailed understanding of FAW from diverse perspectives.
