Abstract

Oil spills at sea are a severe global environmental issue. Smart materials with controllable wettability are of global challenging interest in oil-water related applications. Nature offers a versatile platform of remarkable hierarchical structures with a chemical component, which provides bioinspired solutions for solving many challenges. In this study, an approach to achieve robust superhydrophobic/oleophobic property on flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces which mimics the hierarchical morphology of the natural lotus leaf surface is shown. The structure is prepared by hydrothermal assembly of zinc oxide nanorods onto the microstructured surface, which results in an underwater superoleophobic surface with an oil contact angle up to 153 degrees which can effectively prevent the surface from being polluted by oils. Our results are significant in terms of their importance to academic research and industrial applications and may lead to an innovative impact in the science field.

Abstract

Understanding the mechanism of cell migration and interaction with the microenvironment is not only of critical significance to the function and biology of cells, but also has extreme relevance and impact on physiological processes and diseases such as morphogenesis, wound healing, neuron guidance, and cancer metastasis. External guidance factors such as topography and physical cues of the microenvironment promote directional migration and can target specific changes in cell motility and signalling mechanisms. Recent studies have shown that cells can directionally respond to applied electric fields (EFs), in both in vitro and in vivo settings, a phenomenon called electrotaxis. However, the exact cellular mechanisms for sensing electrical signals are still not fully well understood, and it is thus far unknown how cells recognize and respond to electric fields, although some studies have suggested that electro-migration of some cell surface receptors and ion channels in cells could be involved. Applied electric fields may have a potential clinical role in guiding cell migration and present a more precise manageability to change the magnitude and direction of the electric field than most other guidance cues such as chemical cues. Here we present a review of recent studies used for studying electrotaxis to point out similarities, identify points of disagreement, and stimulate new directions for investigation. Insights into the mechanisms by which applied EFs direct cell migration, morphological change and development will enable current and future therapeutic applications to be optimized.

Abstract

Bio-nanomaterials offer promise in the field of tissue engineering. Specifically, environmental cues such as the material chemistry, topography and rigidity of the surface to which cells adhere to, can alter and dictate cell shape, proliferation, migration, and gene expression. How deeply each factor (topographical, chemical and mechanical) drives cell response remains incompletely understood. To illustrate cell sensitivities to different factors, we herein present ZnO nanorods (ZnO-Nrds) coated on glass and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates and analyzed cell viability and proliferation. The work presented here shows a clear response of various cell lines (mouse embryonic fibroblasts 3T3, human cervix carcinoma HeLa and human osteoblast-like cells MG63) to the rigidity of the underlying surface. The chemical counterpart, given by the presence of ZnO-Nrds, strongly reduced the cell viability of all cell lines. However, the substrate underlying the ZnO coating impacted cell spreading and viability. The substrates exhibited a better ability to neglect cell attachment and proliferation with the ZnO coating and pro-apoptoticity specifically with the PDMS as the underlying substrate which exhibited a "softer" environment with respect to a glass substrate. The results also revealed that the few cells that adhered to the ZnO-Nrds on PDMS and glass showed a rounded morphology. On the basis of these observations, we can correlate common features of phenomenological cell response to chemotactic and durotactic cues. The work presented herein reinforces the response of cells to changes in substrate rigidity. These observations provide a foundation for a potentially promising approach to decrease cell adhesion and thus as an optimal substrate for different applications such as prosthesis design, tissue engineering, anti-bio fouling materials and diagnostics.

Abstract

Worldwide, two broad theories have been used to explain the rise of ethnic identities. These are the natural/biological theory of primordialism and the man-made/situational theory of constructivism. Overtime, each of the two theories has been split into several sub-theories. This research sets out to determine the relevance of the theories of constructivism and instrumentalism in the rise and metamorphosis of the Acholi ethnic identity in northern Uganda. Using ethnography and grounded theory, the researcher established that the Acholi ethnic identity, which has occupied a centre stage in the national politics of Uganda since independence in 1962 [Atkinson, R. R. (1994). The roots of ethnicity. The origins of the Acholi of Uganda. Kampala: Fountain Publishers], emerged due to extraneous factors and some teleological choices making the theories of constructivism and instrumentalism quite relevant to its evolution.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage extensive air shower (EAS) detector located at high altitude (4300 m a.s.l.) in Tibet, China, has smoothly taken data, with very high stability, since November 2007 to the beginning of 2013. The array consisted of a carpet of about 7000 m2 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) operated in streamer mode and equipped with both digital and analog readout, providing the measurement of particle densities up to few particles per cm2. The unique detector features (full coverage, readout granularity, wide dynamic range, ..) and location (very high altitude) allowed a detailed study of the lateral density profile of charged particles at ground very close to the shower axis and its description by a proper lateral distribution function (LDF). In particular, the information collected in the first 10 m from the shower axis have been shown to provide a very effective tool for the determination of the shower development stage ("age") in the energy range 50 TeV - 10 PeV. The sensitivity of the age parameter to the mass composition of primary Cosmic Rays is also discussed.

Abstract

High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $\gamma$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. Abstract

The precise measurement of the spectrum of protons, the most abundant component of the cosmic radiation, is necessary to understand the source and acceleration of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. This work reports the measurement of the cosmic ray proton fluxes with kinetic energies from 40 GeV to 100 TeV, with two and a half years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with a high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee, and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays., Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, published in Science Advances

Abstract

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a satellite-based cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, was launched on December 17, 2015, and began its on-orbit operation on December 24, 2015. In this work we document the on-orbit calibration procedures used by DAMPE and report the calibration results of the Plastic Scintillator strip Detector (PSD), the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), the BGO imaging calorimeter (BGO), and the Neutron Detector (NUD). The results are obtained using Galactic cosmic rays, bright known GeV gamma-ray sources, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each sub-detector. The determination of the boundary of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), the measurement of the live time, and the alignments of the detectors are also introduced. The calibration results demonstrate the stability of the detectors in almost two years of the on-orbit operation.

Abstract

The hadronic interaction of cosmic rays with solar atmosphere can produce high energy gamma rays. The gamma-ray luminosity is correlated both with the flux of primary cosmic rays and the intensity of the solar magnetic field. The gamma rays below 200 GeV have been observed by $Fermi$ without any evident energy cutoff. The bright gamma-ray flux above 100 GeV has been detected only during solar minimum. The only available data in TeV range come from the HAWC observations, however outside the solar minimum. The ARGO-YBJ dataset has been used to search for sub-TeV/TeV gamma rays from the Sun during the solar minimum from 2008 to 2010, the same time period covered by the Fermi data. A suitable model containing the Sun shadow, solar disk emission and inverse-Compton emission has been developed, and the chi-square minimization method was used to quantitatively estimate the disk gamma-ray signal. The result shows that no significant gamma-ray signal is detected and upper limits to the gamma-ray flux at 0.3$-$7 TeV are set at 95\% confidence level. In the low energy range these limits are consistent with the extrapolation of the Fermi-LAT measurements taken during solar minimum and are compatible with a softening of the gamma-ray spectrum below 1 TeV. They provide also an experimental upper bound to any solar disk emission at TeV energies. Models of dark matter annihilation via long-lived mediators predicting gamma-ray fluxes > $10^{-7}$ GeV $cm^{-2}$ $s^{-1}$ below 1 TeV are ruled out by the ARGO-YBJ limits.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been in stable data taking from November 2007 till February 2013 at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Observatory (4300 m a.s.l.). The detector consists of a single layer of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) (6700 m2) operated in streamer mode. The signal pick-up is obtained by means of strips facing one side of the gas volume. The digital readout of the signals, while allows a high space–time resolution in the shower front reconstruction, limits the measurable energy to a few hundred TeV. In order to fully investigate the 1–10 PeV region, an analog readout has been implemented by instrumenting each RPC with two large size electrodes facing the other side of the gas volume. Since December 2009 the RPC charge readout has been in operation on the entire central carpet (∼5800 m2). In this configuration the detector is able to measure the particle density at the core position where it ranges from tens to many thousands of particles per m2. Thus ARGO-YBJ provides a highly detailed image of the charge component at the core of air showers. In this paper we describe the analog readout of RPCs in ARGO-YBJ and discuss both the performance of the system and the physical impact on the EAS measurements. Abstract

The measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum, in particular for individual species of nuclei, is an important tool to investigate cosmic ray production and propagation mechanisms. The determination of the ``knees'' in the spectra of different species remains one of the main challenges in cosmic ray physics. In fact, experimental results are still conflicting. In this paper we report a measurement of the mixed proton and helium energy spectrum, obtained with the combined data of the ARGO-YBJ experiment and a wide field of view Cherenkov telescope, a prototype of the future LHAASO experiment. By means of a multiparameter technique, we have selected a high-purity proton plus helium sample. The reconstructed energy resolution is found to be about 25% throughout the investigated energy range from 100 TeV to 3 PeV, with a systematic uncertainty in the absolute energy scale of 9.7%. The found energy spectrum can be fitted with a broken power-law function, with a break at the energy ${\mathrm{E}}_{k}=700\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}230(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}70(\mathrm{sys})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$, where the spectral index changes from $\ensuremath{-}2.56\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$ to $\ensuremath{-}3.24\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.36$. The statistical significance of the observed spectral break is 4.2 standard deviations.

Abstract

The events recorded by ARGO-YBJ in more than five years of data collection have been analyzed to determine the diffuse gamma-ray emission in the Galactic plane at Galactic longitudes 25{\deg} < l < 100{\deg} and Galactic latitudes . The energy range covered by this analysis, from ~350 GeV to ~2 TeV, allows the connection of the region explored by Fermi with the multi-TeV measurements carried out by Milagro. Our analysis has been focused on two selected regions of the Galactic plane, i.e., 40{\deg} < l < 100{\deg} and 65{\deg} < l < 85{\deg} (the Cygnus region), where Milagro observed an excess with respect to the predictions of current models. Great care has been taken in order to mask the most intense gamma-ray sources, including the TeV counterpart of the Cygnus cocoon recently identified by ARGO-YBJ, and to remove residual contributions. The ARGO-YBJ results do not show any excess at sub-TeV energies corresponding to the excess found by Milagro, and are consistent with the predictions of the Fermi model for the diffuse Galactic emission. Abstract

Imatinib mesylate (IM) is an inhibitor that targets the tyrosine kinase activity of BCR-ABL present in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). Here, IM–chitosan complex loaded poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) nanoparticles (NPs) are recommended for their potential in supporting controlled release and improving the chemotherapeutic efficiency of IM. The nanoparticles with a size of about 247 nm have a core–shell structure with an IM-containing inner core surrounded by a PCL layer. The presence of chitosan (CH) allows one to modulate the release kinetics in a pH-dependent manner. IM is released from the NPs much more quickly at pH 4.0 and 6.0 than at pH 7.4, which is a desirable characteristic for cancer-targeted drug delivery. Our core–shell PCL NPs could provide a simple and easy way to allow controlled release of IM and improve their chemotherapeutic efficiency, combining the pH sensibility of CH and the slow degradation of PCL.

Abstract

Messenger RNA (mRNA) provides a promising alternative to plasmid DNA as a genetic material for delivery in non-viral gene therapy strategies. However, it is difficult to introduce mRNA in vivo mainly because of the instability of mRNA under physiological conditions. Here, mRNA-protamine complex encapsulated poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL) nanoparticles (NPs) are proposed for the intracellular delivery of mRNA molecules. The nanoparticles with a size of about 247 nm in diameter have a core-shell structure with an mRNA-containing inner core surrounded by PCL layers, providing high stability and stealth properties to the nanoparticles. The partial neutralization of the negatively charged mRNA molecules with the cationic protamine allows one to modulate the release kinetics in a pH-dependent manner. At pH 7.4, mimicking the conditions found in the systemic circulation, only 25% of the mRNA is released after 48 hours post incubation, whereas at pH 5.0, recreating the cell endosomal environment, about 60% of the mRNA molecules are released within the same time window post incubation. These NPs show no cytotoxicity to NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, HeLa cells and MG63 osteoblasts up to 8 days of incubation. Given the stability, preferential release behavior, and well-known biocompatibility properties of PCL nanostructures, our non-viral PCL nanoparticles are a promising system that simultaneously resolved the two major problems of mRNA introduction and the instability, opening the door to various new therapeutic strategies using mRNA. Abstract

Underwater wettability and wetting transitions of non-polar liquids with rough solid surfaces are herein presented. Here, we demonstrate that a hydrophobic/oleophilic surface when immersed in water can result in an oleophilic or "Cassie" state of oil-wetting. This was achieved by utilizing respectively a diamond like carbon (DLC) coating on a cotton substrate and a combination of DLC and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods embedded into the structure. Moreover by increasing the time of immersion the oleophilic state reverted to a Wenzel state evolving to Cassie's regime. The mechanism of the transition was identified with the diffusion of the air into the water from the trapped air pockets of the substrate interface. Finally, switchable wettability of ZnO/DLC coated substrates allows a promising oil-water separation use.

Abstract

Lycium barbarum (Goji) fruits are mainly cultivated in northwestern China and are well known for their beneficial and healthy effects. In this work, the biological and functional properties of Calabrian Goji extract, obtained from Goji berries cultivated in the Sibari Plain (in the Italian region of Calabria), were demonstrated. In order to evaluate the use of this extract as a food supplement for cognitive and mental disorders, the quantification of Carotenoids as Zeaxanthin equivalents was made. The antioxidant activity was investigated by evaluating the scavenging properties against 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals and by performing the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) assay. The inhibition of lipid peroxidation was quantified by bleaching test and the ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase enzyme and to scavenge nitric oxide radical was also evaluated. All the results were compared to those obtained from a Chinese Goji extract used as a reference. Based on the reported data, Calabrian Goji might be used as a food supplement with a possible application in cognitive disorders, mental impairments and other neurodegenerative diseases, due to its biological properties and the high levels of Carotenoids.

Abstract

The energy spectrum of cosmic Hydrogen and Helium nuclei has been measured, below the so-called "knee", by using a hybrid experiment with a wide field-of-view Cherenkov telescope and the Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) array of the ARGO-YBJ experiment at 4300 m above sea level. The Hydrogen and Helium nuclei have been well separated from other cosmic ray components by using a multi-parameter technique. A highly uniform energy resolution of about 25% is achieved throughout the whole energy range (100 TeV - 700 TeV). Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is an air shower detector for gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray studies with an energy threshold of ∼500 GeV. Working in “single particle mode”, i.e. counting the single particles hitting the detector at fixed time intervals, ARGO-YBJ can monitor cosmic ray and gamma ray transients at energies of a few GeV. The single particle counting rate is modulated by the atmospheric pressure and temperature, and is affected by the local radioactivity from soil and air. Among the radioactive elements, radon gas is of particular importance since its concentration in air can vary significantly, according to environmental conditions. In this paper we evaluate the contribution of the radon daughter gamma ray emitters to the single particle counting rate measured by ARGO-YBJ. According to our analysis, the radon gas contribution is roughly 1–2%, producing a counting rate modulation of the same order of magnitude of the atmospheric effects.

Abstract

The tumour microenvironment (TME) strongly influences tumorigenesis and metastasis. Two of the most characterized properties of the TME are acidosis and hypoxia, both of which are considered hallmarks of tumours as well as critical factors in response to anticancer treatments. Currently, various imaging approaches exist to measure acidosis and hypoxia in the TME, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography and optical imaging. In this review, we will focus on the latest fluorescent-based methods for optical sensing of cell metabolism and MRI as diagnostic imaging tools applied both in vitro and in vivo. The primary emphasis will be on describing the current and future uses of systems that can measure intra- and extra-cellular pH and oxygen changes at high spatial and temporal resolution. This curriculum requires the use of pupils' mother tongues as languages of instruction from Primary One to Three and then English from Primary Five to Seven. Primary Four is a transitional year. Several studies have indicated that the Thematic Curriculum has been a failure. Although various reasons have been advanced for the challenges of the Thematic Curriculum, the greatest setback seems to be ethnic pluralism. Using in-depth interviews with teachers, parents, education officials and pupils, I investigated how ethnic pluralism impeded the implementation of the Thematic Curriculum in Uganda. I found that most districts in Uganda are multi-ethnic and therefore multi-lingual making it difficult to choose the dominant mother tongue to use as a language of instruction. Even when the dominant language is identified, the pupils and teachers are in most cases from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Abstract

Polygamy has of recent been a focus of attention of scholars, traditionalists, human rights activists and feminists. Whereas human rights activists and feminists regard polygamy as oppressive, discriminative and barbaric, traditionalists view it as an institution that serves the interests of all members of society equally. This research evaluates polygamy in the traditional Acholi society with a view to illustrate why it was dominant and whether the people perceived it as oppressive to women or not. I conducted Key informants' interviews with married people, elders and traditional leaders among the Acholi and reviewed a host of literature on the subject of polygamy and gender equity. Polygamy was common in the traditional Acholi society. The view that polygamy is barbaric, oppressive and unconstitutional is recent and alien to the Acholi people. Abstract

This paper reports on the observation of the sidereal large-scale anisotropy of cosmic rays using data collected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment over 5 years (2008$-$2012). This analysis extends previous work limited to the period from 2008 January to 2009 December,near the minimum of solar activity between cycles 23 and 24.With the new data sample the period of solar cycle 24 from near minimum to maximum is investigated. A new method is used to improve the energy reconstruction, allowing us to cover a much wider energy range, from 4 to 520 TeV. Below 100 TeV, the anisotropy is dominated by two wide regions, the so-called "tail-in" and "loss-cone" features. At higher energies, a dramatic change of the morphology is confirmed. The yearly time dependence of the anisotropy is investigated. Finally, no noticeable variation of cosmic-ray anisotropy with solar activity is observed for a median energy of 7 TeV.

Abstract

DAMPE (DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a spaceborne high-energy cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, successfully launched in December 2015. It is designed to probe astroparticle physics in the broad energy range from few GeV to 100 TeV. The scientific goals of DAMPE include the identification of possible signatures of Dark Matter annihilation or decay, the study of the origin and propagation mechanisms of cosmic-ray particles, and gamma-ray astronomy. DAMPE consists of four sub-detectors: a plastic scintillator strip detector, a Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), a BGO calorimeter and a neutron detector. The STK is composed of six double layers of single-sided silicon micro-strip detectors interleaved with three layers of tungsten for photon conversions into electron-positron pairs. The STK is a crucial component of DAMPE, allowing to determine the direction of incoming photons, to reconstruct tracks of cosmic rays and to estimate their absolute charge (Z). We present the in-flight performance of the STK based on two years of in-flight DAMPE data, which includes the noise behavior, signal response, thermal and mechanical stability, alignment and position resolution.

Abstract

A reproducible technique to fabricate nanojunctions by combining electron beam lithography and lift-off process is reported. Brushing the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layer for a precise short time t with a defocused electron-beam allows the fabrication of planar nanoelectrodes with inter-electrode distances in the range 10-200 nm, by applying a lift-off process after the exposure. Nanotips fabricated by electron beam lithography (EBL) are good probes for transport experiments on single molecules and molecular layers but the nanodevices have to be carefully designed, tested and managed, in order to avoid damage of nanoelectrodes and SiO2 breakdown.

Abstract

In this work, a field effect transistor based on a deoxyguanosine derivative (a DNA base) is demonstrated. Our experiments on transport through the source and drain electrodes interconnected by self-assembled guanine ribbons (Gottarelli et al. Helv. Chim. Acta 1998, 81, 2078; Gottarelli et al. Chem. Eur. J. 2000, 6, 3242; Giorgi et al. Chem Eur. J. 2002, 8, 2143) suggest that these devices behave like p-channel MOSFETs, The devices exhibit a maximum voltage gain of 0.76. This prototype transistor represents a starting point toward the development of biomolecular electronic devices.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of British colonialism in the rise and development of Acholi ethnic identity in Uganda. The authors used oral tradition and archival sources to determine when and how the Acholi ethnicity evolved. They conducted interviews with key informants including chiefs, elders and opinion leaders. Their main argument is that the Acholi as a distinct and collective identity are a British creation. Before British colonialism, the Acholi were a divided people living under different chiefdoms numbering up to about sixty. The name ‘Acholi’ was non-existent. The people who became Acholi were known by the names of their respective chiefdoms. The British abolished those chiefdoms and in their place created a single ethnic identity called Acholi.

Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is a full coverage array of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with an active area of 5800 m 2 . In order to eliminate the response difference of the charge readout from the RPCs, a calibration procedure is carried out with the iso-gradient method. This method also allows the extension of the absolute calibration with the muon telescope including scintillation detectors to all the RPCs in the array. The overall systematic uncertainty in measurements o10.7%. In general, the method gives results consistent with those from a totally different approach also used in the experiment. Abstract

The ARGO-YBJ detector, located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a. s. l., Tibet, China), was a full coverage air shower array dedicated to gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray studies. The wide field of view (~ 2 sr) and high duty cycle (> 86%), made ARGO-YBJ suitable to search for short and unexpected gamma ray emissions like gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Between 2007 November 6 and 2013 February 7, 156 satellite-triggered GRBs (24 of them with known redshift) occurred within the ARGO-YBJ field of view. A search for possible emission associated to these GRBs has been made in the two energy ranges 10-100 GeV and 10-1000 GeV. No significant excess has been found in time coincidence with the satellite detections nor in a time window of one hour after the bursts. Taking into account the EBL absorption, upper limits to the energy fluence at 99% of confidence level have been evaluated,with values ranging from ~ 10-5 erg cm-2 to ~10-1 erg cm-2., 24pages and 12 figures
