Abstract

We propose to perform a continuously scanning all-sky survey from 200 keV to 80 MeV achieving a sensitivity which is better by a factor of 40 or more compared to the previous missions in this energy range. The Gamma-Ray Imaging, Polarimetry and Spectroscopy (GRIPS) mission addresses fundamental questions in ESA's Cosmic Vision plan. Among the major themes of the strategic plan, GRIPS has its focus on the evolving, violent Universe, exploring a unique energy window. We propose to investigate $\gamma$-ray bursts and blazars, the mechanisms behind supernova explosions, nucleosynthesis and spallation, the enigmatic origin of positrons in our Galaxy, and the nature of radiation processes and particle acceleration in extreme cosmic sources including pulsars and magnetars. The natural energy scale for these non-thermal processes is of the order of MeV. Although they can be partially and indirectly studied using other methods, only the proposed GRIPS measurements will provide direct access to their primary photons. GRIPS will be a driver for the study of transient sources in the era of neutrino and gravitational wave observatories such as IceCUBE and LISA, establishing a new type of diagnostics in relativistic and nuclear astrophysics. Abstract

The progress on the dynamics of the radiative zone by global Doppler velocity measurements aboard SoHO (GOLF+ MDI) and with ground networks (BiSON and GONG) opens a new perspective for solar and stellar physics. It is why we prepare a new generation of solar resonant spectrometer. The objectives of the GOLF-NG instrument and its present status are described. We have demonstrated this year that most of the technical challenges have been successfully faced and the next steps are mentioned. We then recall the scientific questions that might be solved with the next generation of instruments in construction in different european laboratories to reach a complete 3D vision of our star from the core to the corona. Two formation flying missions DynaMICCS and HIRISE have been proposed to ESA in the framework of the 2015-2025 Cosmic Vision perspective to contribute to solve these questions. A strategy of measurements must be found for the next decade.

Abstract

CoRoT (COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transit) was launched successfully into a near-perfect orbit on 27 December 2006 and went through its verification phase until 2 April 2007 without incident. Indeed, this process went so well that scientific operations could commence on 2 February 2007. Under the management of the French space agency CNES and with a major partnership with ESA, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany and Spain, COROT is the first satellite dedicated to the search for and study of planets external to the solar system, orbiting other stars, the so-called exoplanets. Further, it is designed to be able to detect for the first time planets as small as our own Earth. A second major objective is the study of acoustical waves permeating stars. All scientific specifications have already been verified or surpassed, and the exploitation phase (nominally 2.5 years) is ongoing. This paper reports the status of exo-planetary research within the emerging European plan for future space research. It reports the launch and initial phases of the CoRoT mission and details the prospects of this mission. CoRoT is thus put into the context of the Cosmic Vision plan.

Abstract

We study the implications of recent indications for a red spectrum of primordial density perturbations for the detection of inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs) with forthcoming cosmic microwave background experiments. We find that if inflation occurs with a single field with an inflaton potential minimized at V=0, then Planck will be able to detect IGWs at better than 2$\sigma$ confidence level, unless the inflaton potential is a power law with a very weak power. The proposed satellite missions of the Cosmic Vision and Inflation Probe programs will be able to detect IGWs from all the models we have surveyed at better than 5$\sigma$ confidence level. We provide an example of what is required if the IGW background is to remain undetected even by these latter experiments., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The European Space Agency (ESA) has selected a handful of candidate missions for the next phase of its space exploration programme, entitled Cosmic Vision 2015–2025. With only two available launch slots, the agency now has to decide among these candidates, which include missions to explore Saturn's moon Titan with a balloon, to decipher the puzzle of dark energy, and to use X-rays to probe black holes.

Abstract

How structures on various scales formed and evolved from the early Universe up to present time is a fundamental question of astrophysical cosmology. EDGE will trace the cosmic history of the baryons from the early generations of massive star by Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) explosions, through the period of cluster formation, down to very low redshifts, when between a third and one half of the baryons are expected to reside in cosmic filaments undergoing gravitational collapse by dark matter (Warm Hot Intragalactic Medium: WHIM). In addition EDGE, with its unprecedented observational capabilities, will provide key results on several other topics. The science is feasible with a medium class mission using existing technology combined with innovative instrumental and observational capabilities on a single satellite by: a) observing with fast reaction Gamma-Ray Bursts with a high spectral resolution (R ~ 500). This enables the study of their (star-forming) environment from the Dark to the local Universe and the use of GRB as back light of large scale cosmological structures b) Observing and surveying extended sources (clusters, WHIM) with high sensitivity using two wide field of view X-ray telescopes (one with a high angular resolution and the other with a high spectral resolution)., This is a low resolution version of the proposal submitted to ESA in response to the Cosmic Vision Call. At a meeting of its Science Programme Committee last month, the agency approved a new programme called "Cosmic Vision" that will save about €500m (about £300m) over the next 10 years by recycling technology and tightening management.

THE "UNDERPLAY OF OPPOSITES" which Derek Stanford finds in Christopher Fry's plays' deserves further study. As Stanford points out, Fry's antitheses grow out of the confusion of appearance and reality, or the elusiveness of truth; and as Stanford implies, they sometimes take the form of moral dilemmas. However, the extent and complexity of this underplay have not been sufficiently explored, nor has there been a sufficient attempt to relate these dilemmas to the dramatist's view of life. This is such an attempt.

Abstract

Exploration of the X-ray sky has established X-ray astronomy as a fundamental astrophysical discipline. While our knowledge of the sky below 10 keV has increased dramatically (∼8 orders of magnitude) by use of grazing incidence optics, we still await a similar improvement above 10 keV, where to date only collimated instruments have been used. Also ripe for exploration is the field of X-ray polarimetry, an unused fundamental tool to understand the physics and morphology of X-ray sources. Here we present a novel mission, the New Hard X-ray Mission (NHXM) that brings together for the first time simultaneous high-sensitivity, hard-X-ray imaging, broadband spectroscopy and polarimetry. NHXM will perform groundbreaking science in key scientific areas, including: black hole cosmic evolution, census and accretion physics; acceleration mechanism and non-thermal emission; physics of matter under extreme conditions. NHXM is designed specifically to address these topics via: broad 0.5–80 (120) keV band for imaging and spectroscopy; 20 arcsec (15 goal) Half Energy Width (HEW) angular resolution at 30 keV; sensitivity limits more than 3 orders of magnitude better than those available in present day instruments; broadband (2–35 keV) imaging polarimetry. In addition, NHXM has the ability to locate and actively monitor sources in different states of activity and to repoint within 1 to 2 h. This mission has been proposed to ESA in response to the Cosmic Vision M3 call. Its satellite configuration and payload subsystems were studied as part of previous national efforts permitting us to design a mature configuration that is compatible with a VEGA launch already by 2020.

Abstract

We describe Castalia, a proposed mission to rendezvous with a Main Belt Comet (MBC), 133P/Elst-Pizarro. MBCs are a recently discovered population of apparently icy bodies within the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, which may represent the remnants of the population which supplied the early Earth with water. Castalia will perform the first exploration of this population by characterising 133P in detail, solving the puzzle of the MBC’s activity, and making the first in situ measurements of water in the asteroid belt. In many ways a successor to ESA’s highly successful Rosetta mission, Castalia will allow direct comparison between very different classes of comet, including measuring critical isotope ratios, plasma and dust properties. It will also feature the first radar system to visit a minor body, mapping the ice in the interior. Castalia was proposed, in slightly different versions, to the ESA M4 and M5 calls within the Cosmic Vision programme. We describe the science motivation for the mission, the measurements required to achieve the scientific goals, and the proposed instrument payload and spacecraft to achieve these.

Abstract

International audience; Proposed in response to the ESA call for the third Medium size mission (M3), CAPSiTT is a small mission designed for a 3-year survey of the non-thermal high energy sky from an equatorial LEO orbit. With a large effective area and a very wide field of view, its single instrument, a silicon tracker, provides good imaging, spectroscopic and polarimetric capabilities with a sensitivity 10-100 times better than COMPTEL. Nucleosynthesis and particle acceleration mechanisms in various sites are the main scientific topics addressed by CAPSiTT.

Abstract

XEUS is the potential successor to ESA's XMM-Newton X-ray observatory and is being proposed in response to the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 long term plan for ESA's Science Programme. A new mission configuration was developed in the last year, accommodating the boundary conditions of a European-led mission with a formation-flying mirror and detector spacecraft in L2 with a focal length of 35m and an effective area of >5 m2 at 1 keV. Here the new capabilities are compared with the key scientific questions presented to the Cosmic Vision exercise: the evolution of large scale structure and nucleosynthesis, the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, and the study of matter under extreme conditions.

Abstract

The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) mission was one of the proposed candidates for the European Space Agency’s third medium mission within the Cosmic Vision Framework. EChO was designed to observe the spectra from transiting exo-planets in the 0.55–11 micron band with a goal of covering from 0.4 to 16 micron. The mission and its associated scientific instrument has undergone a rigorous technical evaluation phase. This paper provides an overview of the payload instrument design for the mission, showing how the system acts together to fulfill the mission objectives. We report on the results of an extensive simulation of the instrument performance and show that EChO would have been photon noise dominated for targets from a faint limit similar to GJ1214 to the brightest targets similar to 55Cnc.
