'I am an AIDS doctor. When I began that work in 1992, we knew what caused AIDS, how it spread, and how to avoid getting it, but we didn't know how to treat it or how to prevent our patients'seemingly inevitable progression toward death. The stigma that surrounded AIDS patients from the very beginning of the epidemic in the early 1980s continued to be harsh and isolating. People looked askance at me: What was it like to work in that kind of environment with those kinds of people? My patients are'those kinds of people.'They are an array and a combination of brave, depraved, strong, entitled, admirable, self-centered, amazing, strange, funny, daring, gifted, exasperating, wonderful, and sad. And more. At my clinic most of the patients are indigent and few have had an education beyond high school, if that. Many are gay men and many of the patients use or have used drugs. They all have HIV, and in the early days far too many of them died. Every day they brought us the stories of their lives. Ball began her medical career taking care of patients with HIV in the Center for Special Studies, a designated AIDS care center at a large academic medical center in New York City. Her unsentimental but moving memoir of her experiences bridges two distinct periods in the history of the epidemic: the terrifying early years in which a diagnosis was a death sentence and ignorance too often eclipsed compassion, and the introduction of antiviral therapies that transformed AIDS into a chronic, though potentially manageable, disease. Voices in the Band also provides a new perspective on how we understand disease and its treatment within the context of teamwork among medical personnel, government agencies and other sources of support, and patients. Deftly bringing back both the fear and confusion that surrounded the disease in the early 1990s and the guarded hope that emerged at the end of the decade, Dr. Ball effectively portrays the grief and isolation felt by both the patients and those who cared for them using a sharp eye for detail and sensitivity to each patient's story. She also recounts the friendships, humor, and camaraderie that she and her colleagues shared working together to provide the best care possible, despite repeated frustrations and setbacks. As Dr. Ball and the team at CSS struggled to care for an underserved population even after game-changing medication was available, it became clear to them that medicine alone could not ensure a transition from illness to health when patients were suffering from terrible circumstances as well as a terrible disease.

Abstract

Background Pediatric obesity has become increasingly prevalent over recent decades. In view of the psychosocial and physical health risks, and the high likelihood that children with obesity will grow to become adults with obesity, there is a clear need to develop evidence-based interventions that can be delivered in the health care system to optimize the health and well-being of children with obesity and their families. The aim of this paper is to describe the development, implementation, and planned evaluation of a parent-based weight management intervention designed for parents of 8–12 year olds with obesity. Methods/results The principles of Intervention Mapping (IM) were used to develop an intervention called Parents as Agents of Change (PAC©). From 2006 to 2009, an environmental scan plus qualitative (individual interviews with parents and children), quantitative (medical record reviews), and literature review data were collected to gain broad insight into family factors related to pediatric obesity and its management. Theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence guided curriculum development, which was founded primarily on the tenets of family systems theory and cognitive behavioral theory. PAC was developed as a manualized, 16-session, group-based, health care professional-led intervention for parents to address individual, family, and environmental factors related to the management of pediatric obesity. The intervention was refined based on feedback from local and international experts, and has been implemented successfully in a multi-disciplinary weight management centre in a children’s hospital. Conclusion IM provided a practical framework to guide the systematic development of a pediatric weight management intervention for parents of children with obesity. This logical, step-by-step process blends theory and practice and is broadly applicable in the context of obesity management intervention development and evaluation. Abstract

Recovery is understood as living a life with hope, purpose, autonomy, productivity, and community engagement despite a mental illness. The aim of this study was to provide further information on the psychometric properties of the Person-in-Recovery and Provider versions of the Revised Recovery Self-Assessment (RSA-R), a widely used measure of recovery orientation. Data from 654 individuals were analyzed, 519 of whom were treatment providers (63.6% female), while 135 were inpatients (10.4% female) of a Canadian tertiary-level psychiatric hospital. Confirmatory and exploratory techniques were used to investigate the factor structure of both versions of the instrument. Results of the confirmatory factor analyses showed that none of the four theoretically plausible models fit the data well. Principal component analyses could not replicate the structure obtained by the scale developers either and instead resulted in a five-component solution for the Provider and a four-component solution for the Person-in-Recovery version. When considering the results of a parallel analysis, the number of components to retain dropped to two for the Provider version and one for the Person-in-Recovery version. We can conclude that the RSA-R requires further revision to become a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing recovery-oriented practices in an inpatient mental health-care setting.

354. Registration status and methodological reporting of randomized controlled trials in obesity research: A review

Abstract

To assess registration and reporting details of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from 2011 to 2016 across four obesity journals.All issues from four leading obesity journals were searched systematically for RCTs from January 2011 to June 2016. Data on registration status were extracted from manuscripts, online trial registries, and a trial database; corresponding authors were contacted for registration details, when necessary. The methodological reporting of RCTs was assessed on specific criteria from the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials.A total of 223 RCTs were reviewed. Three-quarters (n = 170) were registered publicly; 94 (55.3%) reported registration details in the manuscript, and 82 (48.2%) were registered prospectively. Newer RCTs were more likely to be registered prospectively than older RCTs (2014-2016: 57.3% vs. 2011-2013: 39.2%; cThe methodological reporting of RCTs published in obesity journals is suboptimal, despite current guidelines and policies. To complement existing standards, editorial boards should incorporate mandatory fields within the online manuscript submission process to enhance the quality, transparency, and comprehensiveness of reporting RCTs in obesity journals.

Abstract

Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei (GRIFFIN) is a new high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectrometer for decay spectroscopy research with low-energy (20-60 keV) stopped radioactive beams from the Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility at TRIUMF in Vancouver, Canada. GRIFFIN is comprised of 16 HPGe clover detectors and hosts a suite of auxiliary detection systems for tagging $\beta$ particles, neutrons, and internal conversion electrons in coincidence with $\gamma$ rays. GRIFFIN is a powerful new tool for studying the nuclear structure of exotic short-lived isotopes far from stability, and for measuring weak $\gamma$-ray branches that are important in tests of fundamental symmetries and nuclear astrophysics. In this work, first results from the GRIFFIN physics program will be discussed, including a recent measurement of the half-lives of the neutron-rich $^{128-130}$Cd and $^{131}$In isotopes.

Abstract

High precision measurements of the $ft$ values for superallowed Fermi $\beta$ transitions between $J^\pi~=~0^+$ isobaric analogue states allow for stringent tests of the electroweak interaction described by the Standard Model. These transitions provide an experimental probe of the Conserved-Vector-Current hypothesis, enable the most precise determination of the up-down ($V_{ud}$) element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix, and allow one to set stringent limits on the existence of scalar currents in the weak interaction. An extensive program of superallowed branching-ratio and half-life measurements at TRIUMF's Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility has covered the full range of superallowed emitters, from the lightest case, $^{10}$C, to the heaviest case for which precision data are currently available, $^{74}$Rb. These experiments have been performed using a 4$\pi$ continuous-flow gas proportional $\beta$ counter, the 8$\pi$ $\gamma$-ray spectrometer, and, most recently, the new high-efficiency GRIFFIN $\gamma$-ray spectrometer. In this paper, recent highlights from the superallowed Fermi $\beta$ decay program at TRIUMF will be summarized, including high-precision half-life measurements for all three of the lightest superallowed emitters, $^{10}$C, $^{14}$O, and $^{18}$Ne, with the greatest sensitivity to a potential weak scalar current contribution, as well as high-precision branching-ratio measurements for the heavy superallowed emitters $^{62}$Ga and $^{74}$Rb.

Abstract

The processes of lipid deposition and utilization, via the gene leptin (Lep), are poorly understood in taxa with varying degrees of adipose storage. This study examines how these systems may have adapted in marine aquatic environments inhabited by cetaceans. Bowhead (Balaena mysticetus) and beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) are ideal study animals—they possess large subcutaneous adipose stores (blubber) and undergo bi-annual migrations concurrent with variations in food availability. To answer long-standing questions regarding how (or if) energy and lipid utilization adapted to aquatic stressors, we quantified variations in gene transcripts critical to lipid metabolism related to season, age, and blubber depth. We predicted leptin tertiary structure conservation and assessed inter-specific variations in Lep transcript numbers between bowheads and other mammals. Our study is the first to identify seasonal and age-related variations in Lep and lipolysis in these cetaceans. While Lep transcripts and protein oscillate with season in adult bowheads reminiscent of hibernating mammals, transcript levels reach up to 10 times higher in bowheads than any other mammal. Data from immature bowheads are consistent with the hypothesis that short baleen inhibits efficient feeding. Lipolysis transcripts also indicate young Fall bowheads and those sampled during Spring months limit energy utilization. These novel data from rarely examined species expand the existing knowledge and offer unique insight into how the regulation of Lep and lipolysis has adapted to permit seasonal deposition and maintain vital blubber stores.

Abstract

The time dependent backwards implicit method is used to simulate the shape and position of the stripping peaks in DC (linear scan) anodic stripping voltammetry at mercury thin film hydrodynamic electrodes for electrochemically reversible systems. The effect of variable diffusion layer thickness, assumed uniform and experimentally controllable in the case of rotating disk systems, in influencing both the peak potential and peak shape, is quantified and the implications for anodic stripping voltammetry under convective conditions noted.

Abstract

The S matrix ansatz is a rigorously model independent approach to describe the cross-sections and asymmetries in e+e- annihilation. Using the cross-sections and asymmetries measured with the L3 detector during the 1990 and 1991 running period, we determine the mass and the width of the Z boson, the contributions of the Z exchange and of the yZ interference. Including the polarization of the t lepton in the analysis, the leptonic helicity amplitudes of the scattering process are determined assuming lepton universality. The results are compared with other model independent ansatzes as realized in ZFITTER. A systematic bias of the Z mass due to the yZ interference term is detected, which leads to an underestimation of the error on mz for model independent determinations., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

Mean-field theory is used to study the adsorption of polymer chains on a rough surface, both with and without excluded-volume interactions. In particular, the adsorption on a fractal surface generated from a hierarchy of small-amplitude sinusoidal perturbations is investigated. It is found that there is a simple scaling relation between the concentration of adsorbate on a fractal and on a plane boundary. Surface irregularity greatly enhances the adsorption of polymer. The probelm is mathematically equivalent to the binding of quantum mechanical particles by rough interfaces. © 1989 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

Extra spatial dimensions are proposed by recent theories that postulate the scale of gravity to be of the same order as the electroweak scale. A sizeable interaction between gravitons and Standard Model particles is then predicted. Effects of these new interactions in boson and fermion pair production are searched for in the data sample collected at centre-of-mass energies above the Z pole by the L3 detector at LEP. In addition, the direct production of a graviton associated with a Z boson is investigated. No statistically significant hints for the existence of these effects are found and lower limits in excess of 1 TeV are derived on the scale of this new theory of gravity, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

A search for rare charmless decays of B0d and B0s mesons has been performed in the exclusive channels B0d(s) →ηη0, B0d(s) →ηπ0 and B0d(s) →π0π0. The data sample consisted of three million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP from 1991 through 1994. No candidate event has been observed and the following upper limits at 90% confidence level on the branching ratios have been set: Br(B0d→ηη) −4, Br(B0s →ηη) < 1.5 x 10−3, Br(B0d→ηπ0) < 2.5 x 10−4, Br(B0s→ηπ0) < 1.0 x 10−3, Br(B0d→π0π0) < 6.0 x 10−5, Br(B0s→π0π0) < 2.1 x 10−4. Abstract

A $^{52}\mathrm{Cr}(p,t)^{50}\mathrm{Cr}$ two-neutron pickup reaction was performed using the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratorium in Garching, Germany. Excited states in $^{50}\mathrm{Cr}$ were observed up to an excitation energy of 5.3 MeV. Despite significantly increased sensitivity and resolution over previous work, no evidence of the previously assigned first excited ${0}^{+}$ state was found. As a result, the ${0}_{2}^{+}$ state is reassigned at an excitation energy of ${E}_{x}=3895.0(5)$ keV in $^{50}\mathrm{Cr}$. This reassignment directly impacts direct searches for a nonanalog Fermi ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}$ decay branch in $^{50}\mathrm{Mn}$. These results also show better systematic agreement with the theoretical predictions for the ${0}^{+}$ state spectrum in $^{50}\mathrm{Cr}$ using the same formalism as the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction calculations for superallowed nuclei. The experimental data are also compared to ab-initio shell-model predictions using the IM-SRG formalism based on $NN$ and $3N$ forces from chiral-EFT in the $pf$-shell for the first time.

Abstract

Anomalies in pulmonary vasculature are rare; however, the knowledge of the anomal and potential physiological implications for a patient undergoing a thoracic surgery must be understood. We report a case of a 64-year-old female who had a robotic left upper lobectomy for an incidental pulmonary nodule and was found to have a partial anomalous pulmonary vein. We discuss the incidence of pulmonary vein anomalies, associated conditions, and surgical management in patients requiring thoracic surgery.

Abstract

The $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay half-lives of $^{128--130}\mathrm{Cd}$ have been measured with the newly commissioned GRIFFIN $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. The time structures of the most intense $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays emitted following the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay were used to determine the half-lives of $^{128}\mathrm{Cd}$ and $^{130}\mathrm{Cd}$ to be ${T}_{1/2}=246.2\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}(21)$ ms and ${T}_{1/2}=126\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}(4)$ ms, respectively. The half-lives of the $3/{2}^{+}$ and $11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ states of $^{129}\mathrm{Cd}$ were measured to be ${T}_{1/2}(3/{2}^{+})=157\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}(8)$ ms and ${T}_{1/2}(11/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})=147\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}(3)$ ms. The half-lives of the Cd isotopes around the $N=82$ shell closure are an important ingredient in astrophysical simulations to derive the magnitude of the second $r$-process abundance peak in the $A\ensuremath{\sim}130$ region. Our new results are compared with recent literature values and theoretical calculations.

Abstract

To determine the feasibility and preliminary impact of an electronic health (eHealth) screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) delivered in primary care to help parents prevent childhood obesity.Parents of children (5-17 years) were recruited from a primary care clinic. Children's measured height and weight were entered into the SBIRT on a study-designated tablet. The SBIRT screened for children's weight status, block randomized parents to one of four brief interventions or an eHealth control and provided parents with a menu of optional obesity prevention resources. Feasibility was determined by parents' interest in, and uptake of, the SBIRT. Preliminary impact was based on parents' concern about children's weight status and intention to change lifestyle behaviours post-SBIRT.Parents (n = 226) of children (9.9 ± 3.4 years) were primarily biological mothers (87.6%) and Caucasian (70.4%). The proportion of participants recruited (84.3%) along with parents who selected optional resources within the SBIRT (85.8%) supported feasibility. Secondary outcomes did not vary across groups, but non-Caucasian parents classified as inaccurate estimators of children's weight status reported higher levels of concern and intention to change post-SBIRT.Our innovative, eHealth SBIRT was feasible in primary care and has the potential to encourage parents of unhealthy weight children towards preventative action.

Abstract

AISC 358 provides steel connections that are prequalified for use in special and intermediate moment frames (SMF and IMF). Implicit in this standard is that the beam and column are orthogonal to each other in the elevation of the frame. To evaluate the effects of a sloped connection considering an angle of deviation from orthogonal of 28°, two reduced beam section (RBS) moment connections with W36×231 beam and W36×302 column were cyclically tested. Although both specimens met the acceptance criteria of AISC 341, brittle fracture of top flange weld soon followed, a failure mode not typical of an RBS connection. Finite-element analysis demonstrated that the strain demand was not symmetric between two flanges. The strain demand at the heel location was higher than that at the opposite flange and increased with the angle of the slope. Abstract

Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic disease that causes hepatic and renal disease in dogs and human beings. The incidence of leptospirosis in dogs in the USA appears to be increasing. This study used 14 years of canine leptospirosis testing data across 3109 counties in the USA to analyze environmental and socio-economic correlates with rates of infection and to produce a map of locations of increased risk for canine leptospirosis. Boosted regression trees were used to identify the probability of a dog testing positive for leptospirosis based on microscopic agglutination test (MAT) results, and environmental and socio-economic data. The Midwest, East and Southwest were more likely to yield positive tests for leptospirosis, although specific counties in Appalachia had some of the highest predicted probabilities. Location (suburban areas or areas with deciduous forest) and climate (precipitation and temperature) were predictors for positive MAT results for leptospirosis, although the precise direction and strength of the effects was difficult to interpret. Wide geographic variation in predicted risk was identified. This risk mapping approach may provide opportunities for improved diagnosis, control and prevention of leptospirosis in dogs.

A fit to the world superallowed β-decay data including the ^{10}C half-life measurements reported here yields b_{F}=-0.0018±0.0021 (68% C.L.) for the Fierz interference term and C_{S}/C_{V}=+0.0009±0.0011 for the ratio of the weak scalar to vector couplings assuming left-handed neutrinos.

Patient: Male, 77 Final Diagnosis: Femoral artery pseudoaneurysm Symptoms: None Medication: — Clinical Procedure: Cardiac catheterization and coronary stenting with Starclose vascular closure Specialty: Interventional Cardiology Objective: Educational Purpose (only if useful for a systematic review or synthesis) Background: Vascular closure devices (VCDs) are frequently used for hemostasis with endovascular procedures by employing sutures or plug devices (using collagen or hydrogel) or through the use of a metal clip made of nickel and titanium, such as the StarClose SE device. In comparison to manual compression (MC), VCDs are associated with earlier time to discharge and ambulation, improved patient comfort, and better cost-effectiveness. Case Report: A 77-year-old man with history of ischemic cardiomyopathy with non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) underwent diagnostic cardiac catheterization with deployment of a StarClose SE vascular closure device for hemostasis. Upon repeat access 4 days later for coronary intervention, retrograde sheath angiography revealed a pseudo-aneurysm emanating from the center of the StarClose clip. Conclusions: A review of the literature shows VCDs to be non-inferior to MC, with an overall high success rate. Major and minor complications rates are comparable to those with MC, and pseudo-aneurysm is an infrequent complication.

Excited states of 110Cd were studied with conversion electron spectroscopy following the $ \beta^{+}/EC$ decay of 110In. Internal conversion coefficients from K-shell electrons are extracted from $\gamma$ - $ e^{-}$ coincidences and compared with expected values for E1, M1, and E2 transitions, allowing the assignment of the transition multipolarities. The $ \alpha_{K}$ values for transitions connecting the $ 4^{+}$ and $ 6^{+}$ members of the deformed intruder band and the ground-state band show evidence for E0 components. The extracted $ \rho^{2}(E0)\cdot 10^{3}$ value for the $ 4^{+}_{3}\rightarrow 4^{+}_{1}$ 708 keV transition is determined to be $ 106^{+98}_{-91}$ .

Abstract

Shape coexistence between the strongly deformed ground state and the weakly deformed ${0}_{2}^{+}$ state in $^{98}\mathrm{Sr}$ has been a major topic of interest due to the energy difference of 215 keV, which is the smallest in all even-even nuclei. The electric monopole transition strength ${\ensuremath{\rho}}^{2}(E0)$ is an important quantity that can relate the deformation difference and the shape mixing between the two ${0}^{+}$ states, which are admixtures of the vibrational (S) and the rotational (D) states in a simple mixing model. In a $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay spectroscopy experiment, the experimental ${\ensuremath{\rho}}^{2}(E0)$ was measured. A value of 0.053(5) is consistent with the previous measurement and was combined with known electric quadrupole transition strengths $B(E2)$ in calculations of a two-state mixing model. Based on a systematic study on neighboring Kr, Zr, and Mo isotopes, the mixing of the ${0}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states in $^{98}\mathrm{Sr}$ was determined to be 8.6% and 1.3%, respectively, corresponding to deformation parameters ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{\text{D}}=0.38(1)$ and ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{\text{S}}=\ensuremath{-}0.23(2)$. These parameters reproduce experimental transition strengths well except for the ${4}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}_{1}^{+}$ transition, which suggests a smaller D-band deformation for $J\ensuremath{\ge}4$.

Abstract

Mangrove forests grow on saline, permanently or periodically flooded soils of the tropical and subtropical coasts. The tree species that compose the mangrove are halophytes that have suites of traits that confer differing levels of tolerance of salinity, aridity, inundation and extremes of temperature. Here we review how climate change and elevated levels of atmospheric CO2 will influence mangrove forests. Tolerance of salinity and inundation in mangroves is associated with the efficient use of water for photosynthetic carbon gain which underpins anticipated gains in productivity with increasing levels of CO2. We review evidence of increases in productivity with increasing CO2, finding that enhancements in growth appear to be similar to trees in non-mangrove habitats and that gains in productivity with elevated CO2 are likely due to changes in biomass allocation. High levels of trait plasticity are observed in some mangrove species, which potentially facilitates their responses to climate change. Trait plasticity is associated with broad tolerance of salinity, aridity, low temperatures and nutrient availability. Because low temperatures and aridity place strong limits on mangrove growth at the edge of their current distribution, increasing temperatures over time and changing rainfall patterns are likely to have an important influence on the distribution of mangroves. We provide a global analysis based on plant traits and IPCC scenarios of changing temperature and aridity that indicates substantial global potential for mangrove expansion.

Abstract

Water plays a central role in plant biology and the efficiency of water transport throughout the plant affects both photosynthetic rate and growth, an influence that scales up deterministically to the productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, hydraulic traits mediate the ways in which plants interact with their abiotic and biotic environment. At landscape to global scale, plant hydraulic traits are important in describing the function of ecological communities and ecosystems. Plant hydraulics is increasingly recognized as a central hub within a network by which plant biology is connected to palaeobiology, agronomy, climatology, forestry, community and ecosystem ecology and earth-system science. Such grand challenges as anticipating and mitigating the impacts of climate change, and improving the security and sustainability of our food supply rely on our fundamental knowledge of how water behaves in the cells, tissues, organs, bodies and diverse communities of plants. A workshop, 'Emerging Frontiers in Plant Hydraulics' supported by the National Science Foundation, was held in Washington DC, 2015 to promote open discussion of new ideas, controversies regarding measurements and analyses, and especially, the potential for expansion of up-scaled and down-scaled inter-disciplinary research, and the strengthening of connections between plant hydraulic research, allied fields and global modelling efforts.

Abstract

A program of nuclear structure studies to support fundamental symmetry tests has been initiated. Motivated by the search for an electric dipole moment in Hg-199, the structure in the vicinity has been explored via direct reaction studies. To date, these have included the Hg-198,Hg-200(d, d') inelastic scattering reactions, with the aim to obtain information on the E2 and E3 strength distributions, and the Hg-198(d, p) and Hg-200(d, t) reactions to obtain information on the single-particle states in 199Hg. The studies using the 200Hg targets have been fully analyzed using the FRESCO reaction code yielding the E2 and E3 strength distribution to 4 MeV in excitation energy, and the (d, t) single-particle strength to over 3 MeV in excitation energy.

Abstract

The nuclear structure of 122 Xe has been investigated with measurements of the β + /EC decay of 122 Cs with the 8 π γ -ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. The data collected have enabled the determination of relative B(E2) values of some low-energy transitions, and the in-band transitions of the excited 0+ bands have been observed. As a result, the 2+ rotational band members for the 0+ 2 and 0+ 3 states have been firmly identified.

Abstract

We present a detailed characterization of the pyrochlore Bi2Ir2O7 prepared by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis route from aqueous sodium hydroxide solution of NaBiO3·2H2O and IrCl3·5H2O in the presence of Na2O2 at 240 °C. Using 5 M NaOH solution as the reaction medium, a fine powder of polycrystalline Bi2Ir2O7 with an average crystal size of 10 nm and surface area of ∼46 m2 g–1 is produced. Structure refinement against powder neutron diffraction reveals a stoichiometric pyrochlore with no evidence for significant oxide-ion defects. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra recorded at both metal LIII-edges show that, although Bi is present solely as Bi3+, there is evidence for the oxidation of iridium slightly beyond +4. This would suggest some surface oxidation of iridium, which is also shown by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Abstract

This paper provides information about a novel approach of rating agricultural soil quality (SQ) and crop yield potentials consistently over a range of spatial scales. The Muencheberg Soil Quality Rating is an indicator-based straightforward overall assessment method of agricultural SQ. It is a framework covering aspects of soil texture, structure, topography and climate which is based on 8 basic indicators and more than 12 hazard indicators. Ratings are performed by visual methods of soil evaluation. A field manual is then used to provide ratings from tables based on indicator thresholds. Finally, overall rating scores are given, ranging from 0 (worst) to 100 (best) to characterise crop yield potentials. The current approach is valid for grassland and cropland. Abstract

Scientists have discussed the halophytic nature of intertidal plants for decades, and have generally suggested that inherent differentiation of an obligate halophyte from a facultative halophyte relates strongly to whether the plant can survive in fresh water, and not much else. In this mini-review, we provide additional insight to support the pervasive notion that mangroves as a group are truly facultative halophytes, and thus add discourse to the alternate view that mangroves have an obligate salinity requirement. Indeed, growth and physiological optima are realized at moderate salinity concentrations in mangroves, but we maintain the notion that current evidence suggests that survival is not dependent upon a physiological requirement for salt.

Abstract

• To clarify the role of branch photosynthesis in tree functioning, the presence and function of chloroplasts in branch xylem tissue were studied in a diverse range of mangrove species growing in Australia. • The presence of xylary chloroplasts was observed via chlorophyll fluorescence of transverse sections. Paired, attached branches were selected to study the effects of covering branches with aluminium foil on the gas exchange characteristics of leaves and the hydraulic conductivity of branches. • Xylary chloroplasts occurred in all species, but were differently distributed among living cell types in the xylem. Covering stems altered the gas exchange characteristics of leaves, such that water-use efficiency was greater in exposed leaves of covered than of uncovered branches. • Leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity of stems was lower in covered than in uncovered branches, implicating stem photosynthesis in the maintenance of hydraulic function. Given their proximity to xylem vessels, we suggest that xylary chloroplasts may play a role in light-dependent repair of embolized xylem vessels.

Abstract

Mangroves generally grow in nutrient-poor environments and maintain high levels of productivity through unique adaptations for nutrient conservation (Reef et al. 2010). One such adaptation in mangroves is highly efficient resorption of limiting nutrients from senescing leaves prior to abscission (Feller et al. 2003). Thus processes that lead to loss of foliage prior to senescence and nutrient resorption (e.g. storms and herbivory) can be detrimental to tree growth and productivity (Bryant et al. 1983, May & Killingbeck 1992). Furthermore, decomposition of fallen leaves by soil microbial communities (Alongi 1994, Holguin et al. 2001) and crabs (Nagelkerken et al. 2008) is another important process contributing to the recycling of nutrients that are in short supply. Therefore, processes that lead to a substantial reduction in litterfall can have a strong negative effect on nutrient cycling and forest productivity. Mangroves have long been recognized as an important source of organic carbon (both particulate and dissolved) for the surrounding tropical coastal ecosystems (Bouillon et al. 2008, Kristensen et al. 2008). Thus, processes affecting litterfall in mangroves can affect the surrounding marine food webs.

Abstract

Rumination appears to predict and maintain posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but evidence for a causal effect is lacking. This experimental study investigated the impact of manipulating film-related and non-film-related rumination on the development of post-trauma intrusive memories and mood. Sixty healthy participants selected for being moderate ruminators were exposed to a trauma film and then allocated to three conditions: film related rumination; non-film related rumination; and no task. Rumination tasks were completed post-film and daily for one week. The two rumination conditions combined resulted in more intrusive memories of the film over one week than the control condition but there were no differences between rumination conditions. In contrast, the two rumination conditions combined, compared to the control group, did not increase negative mood either in the short or long term. These results extend previous findings to show a causal effect of general and trauma-related rumination on intrusive memories.

Abstract

Urine patches in dairy pastures are major sources of nitrous oxide (N2O). Wet winters result in compaction damage to pastures because of animal trampling. The nitrification inhibitor, dicyandiamide (DCD), is effective at reducing N2O emissions from urine patches. Here, we assessed the extent of damage to the physical quality of the soil by trampling and whether this influenced the ability of DCD to mitigate N2O emissions. A field experiment was conducted where a sandy loam soil was trampled by a mechanical hoof just before urine and DCD application. Trampling reduced air permeability and pore continuity, but this had no effect on bulk density. Urine appeared to have contributed to pore collapse and blockage. Trampling increased average cumulative N2O emissions from 1.74 to 4.66% of urine‐N applied. This effect was attributed to increased water‐filled pore space, aggregate destruction and suppression of grass growth. DCD was highly effective in reducing N2O emissions, with the N2O emission factor of the urine‐N being decreased by 58–63%. Trampling did not significantly affect the effectiveness of DCD in reducing N2O emissions.

Abstract

The Carlylian style of history, more commonly known as the "Great Man" approach, presented the "genius" as an individual worthy of celebration: history as hero worship. This style, which characterized the first wave of the history of psychology, has gone out of historiographic fashion. In its place is the "new history," which is marked by its external focus and privileging of social factors and cultural context in its explanations. This shift in historiographic sensibilities has also led to a revision in the appropriate subject matter for psychologist-historians. This article argues, in contrast, that it is possible to study eminent individuals without resorting to hagiography, and it presents various methods that could be used for this purpose. The aim of such an endeavor is to create a space for critically and historically informed perspectives on greatness and to suggest a reconsideration of the value of an "historical psychology".

Abstract

Innovative and coordinated strategies to address weight bias among health professionals are urgently needed. We conducted a systematic literature review of empirical peer-reviewed published studies to assess the impact of interventions designed to reduce weight bias in students or professionals in a health-related field. Combination sets of keywords based on three themes (1: weight bias/stigma; 2: obesity/overweight; 3: health professional) were searched within nine databases. Our search yielded 1447 individual records, of which 17 intervention studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. Most studies (n = 15) included medical, dietetic, health promotion, psychology and kinesiology students, while the minority included practicing health professionals (n = 2). Studies utilized various bias-reduction strategies. Many studies had methodological weaknesses, including short assessment periods, lack of randomization, lack of control group and small sample sizes. Although many studies reported changes in health professionals' beliefs and knowledge about obesity aetiology, evidence of effectiveness is poor, and long-term effects of intervention strategies on weight bias reduction remain unknown. The findings highlight the lack of experimental research to reduce weight bias among health professionals. Although changes in practice will likely require multiple strategies in various sectors, well-designed trials are needed to test the impact of interventions to decrease weight bias in healthcare settings.

Abstract

Mead’s milkweed Asclepias meadii, a long-lived perennial herb of tallgrass prairie and glade communities of the central United States, is a species designated as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Challenges to its successful management include the facts that much about its life history is unknown, its age at reproductive maturity is very advanced, certain life stages are practically unobservable, its productivity is responsive to unpredictable environmental events, and most of the known populations occur on private lands unprotected by any legal conservation instrument. One critical source of biological uncertainty is the degree to which fire promotes growth and reproductive response in the plant. To aid in its management, we developed a prototype population-level state-dependent decision-making framework that explicitly accounts for this uncertainty and for uncertainties related to stochastic environmental effects and vital rates. To parameterize the decision model, we used estimates found in the literature, and we analyzed data from a long-term monitoring program where fates of individual plants were observed through time. We demonstrate that different optimal courses of action are followed according to how one believes that fire influences reproductive response, and we show that the action taken for certain population states is informative for resolving uncertainty about competing beliefs regarding the effect of fire. We advocate the use of a model-predictive approach for the management of rare populations, particularly when management uncertainty is profound. Over time, an adaptive management approach should reduce uncertainty and improve management performance as predictions of management outcome generated under competing models are continually informed and updated by monitoring data.

Abstract

SUMMARY The architectural expressions for many modern buildings require creative and unconventional structural solutions. Columns must be taller, beams must span further, the structure must be more slender, elements must be curved, structural framing must be sloped and connections must deviate from conventional orthogonal fit-up. Although the technology exists to analyze and design responsive structural systems, prescriptive code requirements oftentimes hinder the implementation of those technologies. Although not a ‘tall building’ by traditional definition, the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) Modernization Program at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) provides an appropriate case study in the implementation of unconventional structural geometry subject to code requirements that prescribe contrasting conventional geometry, which is a familiar challenge for many tall buildings. The architectural expression for the LAX TBIT Modernization Program required the use of long-span steel Special Moment Frames with non-orthogonal moment connections between the beams and columns. The beams were sloped, some were sloped and curved and some of the columns were sloped. The reduced beam section (RBS) moment connection was selected for the project. ANSI/AISC 358, Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications, provides prequalification limits for using an RBS connection. Those limits do not address non-orthogonal moment connections. ANSI/AISC 358 implicitly limits connections to orthogonal geometry; hence, non-orthogonal moment connections are not prequalified for use in seismic applications. This paper describes the structure and the cyclic testing program that was implemented to qualify the proposed non-orthogonal RBS connections in accordance with ANSI/AISC 341, Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings, Appendix S for use on the LAX TBIT Modernization Project. 397. Hydraulic conductance of Acacia phyllodes (foliage) is driven by primary nerve (vein) conductance and density

Abstract

We determined effects of venation traits on hydraulic conductance of phyllodes (foliage), using an array of Acacia s.str. species with diverse phyllode morphologies as the source of variation. Measurements were made on phyllodes from 44 species, grown in common gardens but originating from different positions along a precipitation gradient. Kphyllode varied 18-fold and was positively correlated with primary nerve hydraulic conductance, and with primary nerve (vein) density but not with minor nerve density, in contrast with previous studies of true leaves in other dicotyledons. Phyllodes with higher primary nerve density also had greater mass per area (PMA) and larger bundle sheath extensions (BSEs) from their minor nerves. We suggest that higher primary nerve conductivity and density may decrease the distance travelled in the high-resistance extraxylem pathways of the phyllode. Further, larger BSEs may increase the area available for dispersion of water from the xylem to the extra-xylem tissue. High PMA phyllodes were more common in acacias from areas receiving lower annual precipitation. Maximizing efficient water movement through phyllodes may be more important where rainfall is meagre and infrequent, explaining relationships between nerve patterns and the climates of origin in Australian phyllodinous Acacia.

Abstract

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are alternative high efficiency energy conversion devices considered for automotive and stationary applications. However, the durability of the fuel cell materials used in PEMFCs falls short of the 5,000 operating hour requirement. One of the major reasons for the degradation of PEMFCs is thought to be the loss of electrochemical activity during operation. In this work, we present a systematic study on the impact of Pt nanocatalyst size of PEMFC cathodes on stability and electrochemical performance decay.

Abstract

Core-shell electrocatalysts are of increased interest in PEM fuel cells as a means of improving activity and reducing costs. In situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) provides a unique opportunity to provide characterization of the structure of such materials under operating conditions, enabling the effects of the electrochemical environment on the structures to be explored. However, such measurements present numerous challenges in terms of both data collection and analysis. Here we present two case studies that illustrate both the opportunities and challenges; (i) the modification of a Pt catalyst by Ru and the potential dependent formation of a surface alloy and (ii) a Pt shell - Pd core catalyst with varying shell thickness.

Abstract

A radiation detector technology based on plasma display panels (PDPs), the underlying engine of panel plasma television displays, is being investigated. Emerging from this well-established television technology is the Plasma Panel Sensor (PPS), a novel variant of the micro-pattern radiation detector. The PPS is fundamentally a fast, high-resolution detector comprised of an array of plasma discharge cells, operating in a hermetically sealed gas mixture. We report on the PPS development effort, including proof-of-principle results of laboratory signal observations.
