Introduction Interictal deficits of elementary visuo-cognitive functions are well documented in patients with migraine and are mostly explained in terms of neocortical hyperexcitability. It has been suggested that the basal ganglia and the hippocampi might also be affected in migraine. If so, a deterioration of learning and memory processes related to these structures is expected. Methods A visual learning paradigm thought to be capable of dissociating learning/memory processes mediated by the basal ganglia from processes mediated by the hippocampus (the Rutgers Acquired Equivalence Test) was applied to a group of patients with migraine without aura and to age- and sex-matched controls. Results Patients with migraine showed a significantly poorer performance in both main phases of the test and the deficit in the phase considered to be dependent on the hippocampi was especially marked. Conclusions These results can be interpreted as behavioural support for findings that have suggested the involvement of the basal ganglia and the hippocampi in migraine, but further research is needed to clarify these findings. The spatial and temporal visual sensitivity to drifting sinusoidal gratings was studied in 75 neurons of the feline anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV). Extracellular single-unit recordings were performed in halothane-anesthetized (0.6%), immobilized, artificially ventilated cats. Most cells were strongly sensitive to the direction of drifting gratings. The mean value of the direction tuning widths was approximately 90 deg. Most of the cells (69 of the 75 cases) displayed rather narrowly tuned band-pass characteristics in the low spatial frequency range, with a mean optimal spatial frequency of 0.2 cycles/degree (c/deg). The mean spatial bandwidth was 1.4 octaves. The remainder of the units was low-pass tuned. A majority of the units responded optimally to high temporal frequencies (mean 6.3 Hz), although some cells did exhibit preferences for every examined temporal frequency between 0.6 Hz and 10.8 Hz. The temporal frequency-tuning functions mostly revealed a band-pass character with a mean temporal bandwidth of 1.1 octaves. Our results demonstrate that the neurons along the anterior ectosylvian sulcus display particular spatial and temporal characteristics. The AEV neurons, with their preference for low spatial frequencies and with their fine spatial and temporal tuning properties, seem to be candidates for special tasks in motion perception. This study focuses on the important question whether brain activity recorded from anesthetized, paralyzed animals is comparable to that recorded from awake, behaving ones. We compared neuronal activity recorded from the caudate nucleus (CN) of two halothane-anesthetized, paralyzed and two awake, behaving cats. In both models, extracellular recordings were made from the CN during static and dynamic visual stimulation. The anesthesia was maintained during the recordings by a gaseous mixture of air and halothane (1.0%). The behaving animals were trained to perform a visual fixation task. Based on their electrophysiological properties, the recorded CN neurons were separated into three different classes: phasically active (PANs), high firing (HFNs), and tonically active (TANs) neurons. Halothane anesthesia significantly decreased the background activity of the CN neurons in all three classes. The anesthesia had the most remarkable suppressive effect on PANs, where the background activity was consistently under 1 spike/s. The analysis of these responses was almost impossible due to the extremely low activity. The evoked responses during both static and dynamic visual stimulation were obvious in the behaving cats. On the other hand, only weak visual responses were found in some neurons of halothane anesthetized cats. These results show that halothane gas anesthesia has a marked suppressive effect on the feline CN. We suggest that for the purposes of the visual and related multisensory/sensorimotor electrophysiological exploration of the CN, behaving animal models are preferable over anesthetized ones. Abstract: One of the most widely investigated functions of the brain is vision. Whereas special attention is often paid to motion detection and its modulation by attention, comparatively still little is known about the structural background of this function. We therefore, examined the white matter microstructural background of coherent motion detection. A random-dot kinematogram paradigm was used to measure the sensitivity of healthy individuals׳ to movement coherence. The potential correlation was investigated between the motion detection threshold and the white matter microstructure as measured by high angular resolution diffusion MRI. The Track Based Spatial Statistics method was used to address this correlation and probabilistic tractography to reveal the connection between identified regions. A significant positive correlation was found between the behavioural data and the local fractional anisotropy in the posterior part of the right superior frontal gyrus, the right juxta-cortical superior parietal lobule, the left parietal white matter, the left superior temporal gyrus and the left optic radiation. Probabilistic tractography identified pathways that are highly similar to the segregated attention networks, which have a crucial role in the paradigm. Abstract: Capsaicin desensitization leads to behavioral changes, some of which are related to schizophrenia, but investigations into these effects have been scarce. The goal of this study was to characterize the consequences of juvenile capsaicin desensitization on different functions: acute and inflammation-induced thermal and mechanical sensitivity, urinary bladder capacity and thermoregulation, and also on the potentially schizophrenia-related impairments in sensory-motor gating, motor activity and cognitive functioning. Male Wistar rats desensitized with increasing doses of subcutaneous capsaicin after weaning were investigated. Heat and mechanical pain sensitivity did not change significantly; however, morphine produced a prolonged decrease in the nociceptive response to inflammation in desensitized animals. Ultrasound examination of the bladder revealed enhanced bladder volume in treated animals. Capsaicin-treated animals had higher body temperature at 22°C in both dark and light periods, and they also showed prolonged hyperthermia in new environmental circumstances. Warm environment induced a profound impairment of thermoregulation in desensitized animals. The treated animals also showed higher levels of activity during the active phase and at both cool and warm temperatures. The amplitude of the responses to auditory stimuli and prepulse inhibition did not differ between the two groups, but the desensitized animals showed learning impairments in the novel object recognition test. These results suggest that juvenile capsaicin desensitization leads to sustained changes in several functions that may be related to schizophrenia. We propose that capsaicin desensitization, together with other interventions, may lead to an improved chronic animal model of schizophrenia. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Recent morphological and physiological studies have suggested a strong relationship between the suprageniculate nucleus (Sg) of the posterior thalamus and the input structure of the basal ganglia, the caudate nucleus (CN) of the feline brain. Accordingly, to clarify if there is a real functional relationship between Sg and CN during visual information processing, we investigated the temporal relations of simultaneously recorded neuronal spike trains of these two structures, looking for any significant cross-correlation between the spiking of the simultaneously recorded neurons. For the purposes of statistical analysis, we used the shuffle and jittering resampling methods. Of the recorded 288 Sg–CN neuron pairs, 26 (9.2%) showed significantly correlated spontaneous activity. Nineteen pairs (6.7%) showed correlated activity during stationary visual stimulation, while 21 (7.4%) pairs during stimulus movement. There was no overlap between the neuron pairs that showed cross-correlated spontaneous activity and the pairs that synchronized their activity during visual stimulation. Thus visual stimulation seems to have been able to synchronize, and also, by other neuron pairs, desynchronize the activity of CN and Sg. In about half of the cases, the activation of Sg preceded the activation of CN by a few milliseconds, while in the other half, CN was activated earlier. Our results provide the first piece of evidence for the existence of a functional cooperation between Sg and CN. We argue that either a monosynaptic bidirectional direct connection should exist between these structures, or a common input comprising of parallel pathways synchronizing them. Schizophrenia is characterized by impaired visual contrast sensitivity and anomalous perceptual experiences. The aim of this study was to investigate these phenomena in unmedicated patients with first-episode schizophrenia. Visual Contrast sensitivity was measured with pulsed-pedestal and steady-pedestal tests, which bias information processing toward the parvocellular and magnocellular pathways, respectively. Anomalous perceptual experiences were investigated with the Structured Interview for Assessing Perceptual Anomalies (SIAPA). Results revealed that patients with schizophrenia (n = 20) exhibited increased contrast sensitivity values on the magnocellular test relative to the control participants (n 20). In the parvocellular condition, there was no significant difference between the two groups. The higher magnocellular contrast sensitivity values were associated with increased visual SIAPA scores, especially at the two lowest spatial frequencies (0.25 and 0.5 cycles/degree). These results indicate the heightened sensitivity of magnocellular pathways in unmedicated first-episode schizophrenia, which may contribute to anomalous perceptual experiences and sensory overloading. Abstract: Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of psychotic disorders. NRG1 exerts its effects via the Ras-MAPK and phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase-protein kinase B (PI3K-PKB/AKT) intracellular signaling pathways through ErbB receptors. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between NRG1-stimulated AKT phosphorylation and neurocognitive functions in patients with schizophrenia and in patients with other psychotic disorders. B lymphoblasts of patients (n =40) and controls (n =20) were stimulated with NRG1a (65 amino-acid residue recombinant protein from the epidermal growth factor [EGF] domain) for 30-min. The protein isolated from the cells was analyzed by Western blotting. The dependent measure was the ratio of phosphorylated AKT (pAKT) and total AKT at baseline (without NRG1 stimulation) and after NRG1 stimulation (pAKT/AKT). The neurocognitive functions (attention, immediate and long-term memory, language, visual-spatial skills) were evaluated by the repeatable brief assessment of neuropsychological status (RBANS) battery. The results revealed a significantly reduced pAKT/AKT ratio in patients with schizophrenia as compared with healthy controls and with patients with other psychotic disorders. The patients with other psychotic disorders did not differ from the healthy controls. Despite the fact that neurocognitive functions were significantly impaired in the patients, these functions did not reveal significant correlations with the pAKT/AKT ratio. In conclusion, NRG1-induced AKT phosphorylation is decreased in schizophrenia but not in other psychotic disorders. This peripheral marker is not related to neurocognitive functions. Abstract: Both anandamide and adenosine have significant roles in pain mechanisms, but no data are available concerning their interaction at the spinal level. The goal of this study was to determine how adenosine and the adenosine receptor antagonist caffeine affect the antinociceptive effect of anandamide. The pain sensitivity was assessed by the acute tail-flick test and by paw withdrawal test after carrageenan-induced inflammation. The substances were administered intrathecally to male Wistar rats. Anandamide alone (1, 30 and 100 μg) dose-dependently decreased the hyperalgesia, however it had low potency in the tail-flick test. Neither adenosine (100 μg) nor caffeine (400 μg) alone changed the pain sensitivity markedly. Their combination caused a short-lasting antihyperalgesia, but it did not influence the tail-flick latency. Both adenosine and caffeine decreased the antihyperalgesic potential of 100 μg anandamide, while adenosine–caffeine pretreatment temporarily enhanced its effect. As regards acute heat pain sensitivity, no combination with anandamide influenced the effect of anandamide. These findings provide new data concerning the interaction between two endogenous ligands and caffeine. Since these substances may exert effects on several receptors and/or systems, their interaction in vivo must be very complex and the net outcome after their coadministration could not been predicted from the in vitro results. The role of the caudate nucleus (CN) in motor control has been widely studied. Less attention has been paid to the dynamics of visual feedback in motor actions, which is a relevant function of the basal ganglia during the control of eye and body movements. We therefore set out to analyse the visual information processing of neurons in the feline CN. Extracellular single-unit recordings were performed in the CN, where the neuronal responses to drifting gratings of various spatial and temporal frequencies were recorded. The responses of the CN neurons were modulated by the temporal frequency of the grating. The CN units responded optimally to gratings of low spatial frequencies and exhibited low spatial resolution and fine spatial frequency tuning. By contrast, the CN neurons preferred high temporal frequencies, and exhibited high temporal resolution and fine temporal frequency tuning. The spatial and temporal visual properties of the CN neurons enable them to act as spatiotemporal filters. These properties are similar to those observed in certain feline extrageniculate visual structures, i.e. in the superior colliculus, the suprageniculate nucleus and the anterior ectosylvian cortex, but differ strongly from those of the primary visual cortex and the lateral geniculate nucleus. Accordingly, our results suggest a functional relationship of the CN to the extrageniculate tecto-thalamo-cortical system. This system of the mammalian brain may be involved in motion detection, especially in velocity analysis of moving objects, facilitating the detection of changes during the animal's movement. Abstract: While it is well known that the endogenous cannabinoid receptor ligand anandamide also activates the transient receptor potential vanilloid1 (TRPV1) receptors, there has been no in vivo study indicating the role of the TRPV1 receptors in the antinociceptive effect of anandamide at spinal level. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of inhibition of TRPV1 receptors by capsazepine on the antinociceptive potency of anandamide after intrathecal administration. Anandamide alone (1, 30 or 100μg) dose-dependently decreased carrageenan-induced thermal hyperalgesia, however, the highest dose caused temporary excitation and vocalization, suggesting the pain-inducing potential of anandamide. Capsazepine (10 or 20μg) by itself did not change the pain sensitivity markedly, but the lower dose increased it, and the higher dose decreased the antinociceptive effect of 30μg anandamide. Furthermore, both doses of capsazepine decreased the efficacy of the largest dose of anandamide. These results show that TRPV1 receptor activation plays a substantial role in the antinociceptive effects of anandamide at spinal level. The effect of the inhibition on TRPV1 receptors depended on the dose applied. We presume that coactivation of the cannabinoid and TRPV1 receptors by anandamide provides elevated antinociception through the release of antinociceptive endogenous ligands at spinal level. The spatio-temporal frequency response profiles of 73 neurons located in the superficial, retino-recipient layers of the feline superior colliculus (SC) were investigated. The majority of the SC cells responded optimally to very low spatial frequencies with a mean of 0.1 cycles/degree (c/deg). The spatial resolution was also low with a mean of 0.31 c/deg. The spatial frequency tuning functions were either low-pass or band-pass with a mean spatial frequency bandwidth of 1.84 octaves. The cells responded optimally to a range of temporal frequencies between 0.74 cycles/s (c/s) and 26.41 c/s with a mean of 6.84 c/s. The majority (68%) of the SC cells showed band-pass temporal frequency tuning with a mean temporal frequency bandwidth of 2.4 octaves, while smaller proportions of the SC units displayed high-pass (19%), low-pass (8%) or broad-band (5%) temporal tuning. Most of the SC units exhibited simple spectral tuning with a single maximum in the spatio-temporal frequency domain, while some neurons were tuned for spatial or temporal frequencies or speed tuned. Further, we found cells excited by gratings moving at high temporal and low spatial frequencies and cells whose activity was suppressed by high velocity movement. The spatio-temporal filter properties of the SC neurons show close similarities to those of their retinal Y and W inputs as well as those of their inputs from the cortical visual motion detector areas, suggesting their common role in motion analysis and related behavioral actions. Abstract: Evidence suggests that dopaminergic mechanisms in the basal ganglia (BG) are important in the learning of sequential associations. To test the specificity of this hypothesis, we assessed never-medicated patients with Parkinson''s disease (PD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) using a chaining task. In the training phase of the chaining task, each link in a sequence of stimuli leading to reward is trained step-by-step using feedback after each decision, until the complete sequence is learned. In the probe phase of the chaining task, the context of stimulus-response associations must be used (the position of the associations in the sequence). Results revealed that patients with PD showed impaired learning during the training phase of the chaining task, but their performance was spared in the probe phase. In contrast, patients with aMCI with prominent medial temporal lobe (MTL) dysfunctions showed intact learning during the training phase of the chaining task, but their performance was impaired in the probe phase of the chaining task. These results indicate that when dopaminergic mechanisms in the BG are dysfunctional, series of stimulus-response associations are less efficiently acquired, but their sequential manner is maintained. In contrast, MTL dysfunctions may result in a non-sequential learning of associations, which may indicate a loss of contextual information. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The latencies of the neuronal responses from the inferotemporal cortical cells were analyzed in animals performing a visual fixation task and a recognition task with the same stimulus set. A consistent reduction in response latencies of about 10 ms was observed in favor of the recognition task. It was found that behavioral relevance reduces the latency in the inferotemporal cortex and it was concluded that behavioral significance accelerates information processing. Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the relationship between abnormal neurological signs, visual contrast sensitivity, and the deficit syndrome of schizophrenia. Visual contrast sensitivity for counterphase-modulated low spatial frequency gratings was measured in 32 non-deficit and 12 deficit schizophrenia patients and 20 healthy controls subjects. Abnormal neurological signs were evaluated with the Neurological Evaluation Scale (NES). Compared with the controls, patients with schizophrenia displayed impaired visual contrast sensitivity, which was associated with sensory integration deficits, as measured with the NES. The deficit syndrome was predicted by negative symptoms and sensory integration deficits. These results suggest that early-stage perceptual dysfunctions, which may reflect the abnormality of precortical magnocellular visual pathways, are related to a specific group of abnormal neurological signs. Sensorimotor co-ordination in mammals is achieved predominantly via the activity of the basal ganglia. To investigate the underlying multisensory information processing, we recorded the neuronal responses in the caudate nucleus (CN) and substantia nigra (SN) of anaesthetized cats to visual, auditory or somatosensory stimulation alone and also to their combinations, i.e. multisensory stimuli. The main goal of the study was to ascertain whether multisensory information provides more information to the neurons than do the individual sensory components. A majority of the investigated SN and CN multisensory units exhibited significant cross–modal interactions. The multisensory response enhancements were either additive or superadditive; multisensory response depressions were also detected. CN and SN cells with facilitatory and inhibitory interactions were found in each multisensory combination. The strengths of the multisensory interactions did not differ in the two structures. A significant inverse correlation was found between the strengths of the best unimodal responses and the magnitudes of the multisensory response enhancements, i.e. the neurons with the weakest net unimodal responses exhibited the strongest enhancement effects. The onset latencies of the responses of the integrative CN and SN neurons to the multisensory stimuli were significantly shorter than those to the unimodal stimuli. These results provide evidence that the multisensory CN and SN neurons, similarly to those in the superior colliculus and related structures, have the ability to integrate multisensory information. Abstract: Objective: Nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is one of the most frequent causes of sudden visual loss in middle-aged or elderly patients. Although several electrophysiological methods are available for an objective evaluation of the visual deficits, these are not generally used in the assessment of the clinical condition of NAION patients. To evaluate the severity of the optic nerve and retinal damage, electrophysiological tests were performed on 8 patients with NAION. Methods: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs), scotopic, photopic and flicker electroretinograms (ERGs), multifocal ERGs and pattern ERGs were recorded. Results: The results demonstrated that the VEPs fairly reliably reflected the visual loss caused by NAION. The VEPs were extinguished in cases with a serious visual acuity loss, while a decrease in amplitude and a lengthening of the P100 latency were observed in cases with good visual acuity and a severe visual field loss and in the nonattacked fellow eye of the patients with monocular involvement. The pattern ERGs failed to show signs of retrograde degeneration. The photopic, scotopic and flicker ERGs, and the oscillatory potentials (OPs) were close to normal in these NAION patients. Conclusions: Our observations permit the conclusion that electrophysiological methods can provide an objective indication of the clinical condition of these patients. The new data obtained promote an understanding of the pathomechanism of the disease. The goal of our study was to compare the case histories and clinical findings in three young patients (aged < 50 years) who had undergone their first attack of non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION). We intended to consider whether NAION at a relatively young age might comprise a separate pathological and diagnostic entity. All three cases revealed some common characteristics. All of them experienced recurrent attacks with bilateral manifestations that led to severe loss of vision and visual field defects. The patients had also suffered from diabetes mellitus for a long time, but none of them had diabetic retinopathy. The case histories of these relatively young patients showed some differences, including recurrences and more severe loss of vision, to those of elderly patients. However, all the signs we found had been reported previously, although much less frequently, in NAION cases among elderly patients. The clinical and laboratory findings definitely exclude the possibility of an alternative diagnosis. Hence, our results do not support the notion of a different pathomechanism of NAION at a young age and its existence as a separate disease entity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The basal ganglia are widely regarded as structures involved in sensorimotor co-ordination, but little is known about the sensory background of their function. We publish here descriptions of the excitatory sensory responses and receptive field properties of the visual, auditory, somatosensory and multisensory caudate nucleus and substantia nigra pars reticulata neurons. Altogether 111 caudate nucleus and 124 substantia nigra sensory neurons were recorded in halothane-anaesthetized, immobilized, artificially ventilated cats. The sensory properties of the caudate and nigral neurons were found to be quite similar. A majority of the units were unimodal while a significant proportion of them were multisensory. The visual and the somatosensory modalities predominated for both nuclei. The sensory receptive fields were extremely large. The visual and auditory receptive fields covered the whole physically approachable sensory field and the somatosensory receptive fields covered the whole body surface of the animal. The receptive field properties of the multisensory caudate and nigral units were similar to those of the unimodal neurons. We observed no signs of retinotopical or somatotopical organization within the basal ganglia. The particular sensory receptive field properties, together with the significant number of multisensory neurons in the basal ganglia, suggest the existence of a multisensory pathway of presumably tectal origin involving the caudate nucleus and the substantia nigra that may serve for the sensory feedback of motor actions co-ordinated by the basal ganglia. In this study, the authors investigated the relationship between the Ser9Gly (SG) polymorphism of the dopamine D3 receptor (DRD3) and striatal habit learning in healthy controls and patients with schizophrenia. Participants were given the weather prediction task, during which probabilistic cue-response associations were learned for tarot cards and weather outcomes (rain or sunshine). In both healthy controls and patients with schizophrenia, participants with Ser9Ser (SS) genotype did not learn during the early phase of the task (1-50 trials), whereas participants with SG genotype did so. During the late phase of the task (51-100 trials), both participants with SS and SG genotype exhibited significant learning. Learning rate was normal in patients with schizophrenia. These results suggest that the DRD3 variant containing glycine is associated with more efficient striatal habit learning in healthy controls and patients with schizophrenia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPT) projects its cholinergic fibers to both the lateralis medialis-suprageniculate nucleus (LM-Sg) and the superior colliculus (SC). For the purpose of verification of whether a single neuron in the PPT projects to both the LM-Sg and the SC, we injected dextran tetramethylrhodamine (DR) into the LM-Sg and dextran fluorescein (DF) into the ipsilateral SC. The DR-positive neurons labeled retrogradely in the PPT are small (mean: 27.13±1.22 µm) and distributed in the rostral two-thirds of this nucleus, whereas the DF-positive neurons are small (mean: 27.54±1.16 µm) or medium-sized (mean: 40.18±1.43 µm), and are located throughout the PPT. Thirty-five percent of all labeled neurons are double-labeled and small. The present study indicates that the PPT projection to the LM-Sg in part involves neurons bifurcating to the SC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of light therapy on visual contrast sensitivity in patients with seasonal affective disorder (n=10) and healthy control subjects (n=10). Static and dynamic visual contrast sensitivity was measured using a Venus system before and after 4 weeks of light therapy (10 000 lux, 30 min, 5 times a week). Light therapy increased static visual contrast sensitivity in the patients. We found no significant difference between the patients and controls either before or after light therapy. These results raise the possibility that light therapy induces retinal sensitization in seasonal affective disorder. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of endomorphin-1 on Na+,K+-ATPase activity in mouse brain synaptosome in vitro, and its antinociceptive interaction with the Na+,K+-ATPase inhibitor ouabain. Endomorphin-1 (0.1 nM–10 μM) produced a concentration-dependent (EC50: 43.19 nM, CI: 23.38–65.71 nM, Emax: 25.86%, CI: 24.53–27.20%), naloxone-reversible increase of the synaptosomal Na+,K+-ATPase activity. The intrathecally (i.t.) administered endomorphin-1 (2–20 μg) produced a dose-dependent short-lasting increase in the tail-flick latency. Ouabain itself (1–1000 ng, i.t.) did not cause antinociception. Treatment with 10 ng ouabain significantly decreased the antinociceptive effect of 2 μg endomorphin-1, but none of the other combinations did significantly differ from the endomorhin-1-treated groups. These data indicate that endomorphin-1 increases the activity of Na+,K+-ATPase in vitro but this effect may play a weak role in the antinociception induced by intrathecal endomorphin-1. Abstract Working memory and information processing abnormalities are often reported in schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to examine visual backward masking (BM) functions in remitted schizophreniaspectrum patients with spared working memory functions. Seventy-two patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were screened using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and the digit span forward/backward tasks. Patients with spared WCST and digit span performances were selected and administered a spatial working memory test and two BM procedures (target identification and location). The schizophrenia-spectrum group with spared WCST and digit span performances included individuals with schizophreniform disorder (N=11), schizophrenia (N=2), and schizoaffective disorder (N=2). These patients were clinically remitted and demonstrated spared IQ, normal spatial working memory, and relatively high psychosocial functioning. However, there was a significant impairment in the BM procedure, most prominently in the target location task and at short interstimulus intervals. These results suggest that the BM dysfunction is a trait marker of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and may be present in the absence of working memory abnormalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
