Abstract: I have been fortunate to spend portions of my career in each of private practice, industry, and academia. At some times, these occupations have dictated the research direction, whereas, at others, curiosity has been allowed to dominate. This has resulted in multiple avenues of inquiry (some might say, too many), along which I have traveled with a rich and varied cast of collaborators, who have all taught me a great deal. The privilege of being awarded the Charles F. Prentice medal provides me an opportunity to summarize some of these activities. Beginning with an attempt to use contact lenses to solve a problem for those affected by albinism, the story shifts to addressing some of the wider deficiencies of contact lenses, in particular the consequences of their oxygen permeability and tendency to induce discomfort toward the end of the day. Abstract: Detailed clinical assessment is critical to allow sensitive evaluation of the eye and its management. As technology advances, these assessment techniques can be adapted and refined to improve the detection of pathological changes of ocular tissue and their impact on visual function. Enhancements in optical medical devices including spectacle, contact, and intraocular lenses have allowed for a better understanding of the mechanism and amelioration of presbyopia and myopia control. Advancements in imaging technology have enabled improved quantification of the tear film and ocular surface, informing diagnosis and treatment strategies. Miniaturized electronics, large processing power, and in-built sensors in smartphones and tablets capacitate more portable assessment tools for clinicians, facilitate self-monitoring and treatment compliance, and aid communication with patients. In 2006, the University of Maryland Carey School of Law had the privilege of co-hosting the annual Health Law Professors Conference with the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics (ASLME). Coincidentally, as director of the Law & Health Care Program at Maryland, I had the opportunity to announce the winner of the Jay Healey Health Law Teachers' Award at the conference. The award is given to "professors who have devoted a significant portion of their career to health law teaching and whose selection would honor Jay [Healey's] legacy through their passion for teaching health law, their mentoring of students and/or other faculty and by their being an inspiration to colleagues and students." 1 Healey, a Professor in the Humanities Department at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, was the youngest recipient of the Society's Health Law Teachers' Award, which he received in 1990. He was passionate about teaching and had the idea to devote a session each year at the annual conference to teaching health law. It was always a plenary session at which he challenged us to be better teachers. Jay died in 1993, at the age of 46, not long after the Health Law Teachers conference that year, which he attended and which also happened to be held in Baltimore at the University of Maryland School of Law. Thereafter, the award was given in his name.

Background: In 2015, the UK government established the Fleming Fund with the aim to address critical gaps in surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in low- and middle-income countries in Asia and Africa. Among a large portfolio of grants, the Capturing Data on Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns and Trends in Use in Regions of Asia (CAPTURA) project was awarded with the specific objective of expanding the volume of historical data on AMR, consumption (AMC), and use (AMU) in the human healthcare sector across 12 countries in South and Southeast Asia., Methods: Starting in early 2019, the CAPTURA consortium began working with local governments and >100 relevant data-holding facilities across the region to identify, assess for quality, prioritize, and subsequently retrieve data on AMR, AMC, and AMU. Relevant and shared data were collated and analyzed to provide local overviews for national stakeholders as well as regional context, wherever possible., Results: From the vast information resource generated on current surveillance capacity and data availability, the project has highlighted gaps and areas for quality improvement and supported comprehensive capacity-building activities to optimize local data-collection and -management practices., Conclusions: The project has paved the way for expansion of surveillance networks to include both the academic and private sector in several countries and has actively engaged in discussions to promote data sharing at the local, national, and regional levels. PLACE DE L'IRM POUR EXPLORER LES PATHOLOGIES ANORECTALES. L'imagerie par résonance magnétique (IRM) est l'un des examens d'imagerie les plus utiles à l'exploration des pathologies ano rectales. Elle est complémentaire de l'examen clinique et de l'endo scopie. Elle permet de fournir des données indispensables à une prise en charge optimale du patient par le proctologue, le chirurgien ou l'oncologue en fonction de la nature de l'atteinte anale ou rectale. Il est nécessaire de respecter les différentes indications de cet examen, qui ont été bien définies pour chaque pathologie par les différentes sociétés savantes. Le protocole de l'IRM varie en fonction de la zone explorée et de la pathologie suspectée. C'est pourquoi il est indispensable de fournir au radiologue les informations nécessaires telles que la suspicion diagnostique, les données cliniques, ainsi que les résultats des examens complémentaires déjà réalisés. Les indications les plus fréquentes de l'IRM en proctologie sont les tumeurs anales et rectales. L'IRM permet le bilan initial de l'extension locorégionale de la tumeur ainsi que le suivi oncologique précoce et tardif grâce à l'étude comparative des examens de surveillance par rapport au bilan initial. L'IRM est indispensable pour l'exploration des suppurations anopérinéales complexes, en particulier liées à la maladie de Crohn. Elle permet la réalisation du bilan lésionnel initial ainsi que le contrôle post-drainage. En cas de suspicion de maladie de Verneuil ou de sinus pilonidal infecté, l'IRM participe à l'orientation vers le diagnostic étiologique. La déféco-IRM est une variante particulière de l'IRM pelvienne et périnéale. Elle fait partie du bilan des dysfonctions du plancher pelvien, car elle permet l'étude du comportement des différents organes pelviens au cours des efforts de poussée et de défécation. Les fissures anales et les thromboses hémorroïdaires sont les causes les plus fréquentes de douleurs anales. Leur diagnostic est purement clinique. The George E Palade Prize is the highest honour awarded by the International Association of Pancreatology, that recognises an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the understanding of the pancreas and pancreatic diseases. The 2023 Palade Prize was awarded to Professor Minoti Apte, University of New South Wales Sydney on September 16, 2023 during the Joint Meeting of the International Association of Pancreatology and the Indian Pancreas Club, held in Delhi, India. This paper summarises her Palade lecture wherein she reflects on her journey as a medical graduate, an academic and a researcher, with a particular focus on her team's pioneering work on pancreatic stellate cell biology and the role of these cells in health and disease. While there has been much progress in this field with the efforts of researchers worldwide, there is much still to be learned; thus it is a topic with ample scope for innovative research with the potential to translate into better outcomes for patients with pancreatic disease., (Copyright © 2023 IAP and EPC. The 2022 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Study Group (FASDSG) meeting was held in coordination with the 45th annual Research Society on Alcoholism conference on June 25th, 2022. The theme of the meeting was "Enhancing the Relevance of Research for the Community." The program began with a moderated panel discussion on the value of community-engaged research, which included two self-advocates and a clinical and pre-clinical researcher. Invited plenary speakers included Jill Locke, Ph.D., who provided an engaging introduction to implementation science, and Jared Young, Ph.D., who discussed cross-species domain task specificity. The meeting also included updates from three government agencies, short presentations by junior and senior investigators showcasing late-breaking FASD research, trainee award winners, and a presentation on the Toward Health Outcomes intervention roadmap by Jacqueline Pei, Ph.D., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest None., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. NIDA's Avenir Program in the Genetics or Epigenetics of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) was launched to support early stage investigators who propose innovative, high risk, but potentially high impact research and who show promise of being tomorrow's leaders in this scientific field. Since 2015, NIDA has supported 30 Avenir Investigators with unique expertise and creative ideas. This special issue showcases how some of these ideas have germinated, flourished, and borne fruit. Society awards are an important component of recognition in medicine and for career advancement such as promotion. Multiple studies conducted in pediatrics and gastroenterology have shown underrepresentation of women awardees even in fields with a higher proportion of women than men. To our knowledge, no such studies have been conducted in pediatric gastroenterology. We hypothesized that among all recipients, women would be underrepresented when compared to men and that women were more likely to be given teaching awards compared to other career achievement awards. We collected data on recipients of major recognition award presented by The North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition from 1987 to 2022. We found that 80.90% of the awards had been given to men and that most nominators were men.
