The recent investigations of the various manifestations of rickets have tended to emphasize the aspects of this disorder that are seen in young infants, so that one is apt to lose sight of the fact that evidences of rickets are often found in older children. Although infantile rickets in the active stage is supposed to have disappeared by the end of the second year even when the child is not treated, there are many exceptions to this rule, particularly among negro and Italian children. In the literature the condition is referred to as instances of "relapsing" rickets. This term is a misnomer, since it implies a previous cure of the condition, whereas in these children the disease has progressed and is evident in a most severe form. There is a great deal of diversity in AAF hospitals regarding the management of the period of convalescence after rheumatic fever. It varies from a prolonged restriction of physical activities to an early participation in special exercise which often may require a great deal of exertion. This difference in attitude regarding physical activity can be explained easily. On the one hand, it has been a medical tradition, based mainly on observation among children, that rest is an essential part of the rheumatic fever regimen not only during the active stage of the disease but also during a long period of time afterward. On the other hand, accumulated experience with rheumatic fever has indicated that this disease affects adults in a lesser degree than children, and therefore the management of the patients in the two instances may not be the same. According to Becker,1forty-three cases of meningitis after enucleation of the eye had been placed on record up to 1888. The first two of these were reported by von Graefe at the Heidelberg Ophthalmological Congress in 1863, and he took occasion to warn against enucleation when the eye was in the active stage of an acute purulent panophthalmitis. With the exception of the contributions of Andrews2and George C. Harlan,3little or nothing on the subject has appeared in this country. The contributions of Leber and Deutschmann,4in Germany, are well known and are referred to by Andrews in his paper. Recent investigations concerning the etiology of infantile tetany have resulted in one definite conclusion, namely, that the blood calcium is markedly reduced during the active stage. This was first suggested by the experiments of Sabbatini, 1 and was proved finally by the accurate estimations of Howland and Marriott. 2 Earlier investigations by MacCallum and Voegtlin 3 had shown a similar decrease in the calcium content of the blood in experimental parathyroid tetany in dogs. These results have been confirmed by the subsequent work of other authors, both in experimental tetany and in infantile tetany. Another fact generally conceded is that the inorganic phosphorus content of the blood is usually either normal or elevated. As a rule auscultation in cases of bronchial asthma does not present any particular difficulty, there being a prolonged expiration with normal inspiration heard uniformly over all parts of the lungs, as stated by the classical school. Actually, however, there is "prolongation of both phases of the respiratory cycle and in particular that of the expiratory phase is noteworthy." The typical musical rales, sibilant and sonorous, are more accentuated during expiration and frequently altogether inaudible during inspiration. As to the differentiation from other pathological conditions causative of prolonged expiration, diagnosis will depend on the character of the breath sounds. Thus, as R. A. Tularemia is a disease fatal to wild rodents and, in some instances, to man. It has been reported from most of the states in the Union and from Japan, and has occurred in laboratory workers in England. It has been found in sheep, wild rats, mice, hares and rabbits. It is transmitted to man by the handling of the internal organs of infected animals or by the bites of certain ticks and horseflies. The disease is classified under four types, namely: (1) oculoglandular; (2) ulceroglandular, of which the case reported here is typical; (3) typhoid, and (4) glandular. The active stage of the disease usually lasts about three weeks, but its manifestations do not entirely disappear until about three months. It is diagnosed by obtaining the causative organism, Bacterium tularense , in blood culture or by agglutination of the blood serum. Treatment is usually symptomatic, although some have reported success
