Established at the end of the 16th century for the donation of two marian icons, the indigenous brotherhood of Santa María de Consolación de Utrera settled in the Merced's convent in Lima. Since that time the indigenous developed in this church a wide series of cults, with the approval of the friars. However, until the middle of the 18th century we have no documentary evidence that all these liturgical acts and festivities were regulated by constitutions. This organization fixed all the cults in the annual calendar and stipulated the cost of each one of them, thus revealing its gradation. Analyze these celebrations, their importance in the life of this indigenous brotherhood and financially verify that they were carried out, is the purpose of this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PORT cities , *OTTOMAN Empire , *COFFEE industry , *HISTORICAL source material , *COFFEE , *TRADE routes , *COFFEE drinking - Abstract
The saying “Coffee comes from Yemen” gives information about the origin of Turkish coffee and is well known in Turkey, being quoted in a folk song in Turkish. However, Egypt being an important stop on the coffee trade route from Yemen to İstanbul is not well known. Cairo, the administrative center of Egypt, and other port cities were important stops for the coffee trade, as well as places where coffee was extensively consumed. Since African cultures and civilizations are not generally the focus of studies on the Ottoman Empire, the number of studies on the period when the Ottoman Empire ruled the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts of Africa is quite small. Cultural studies, in particular, is also a neglected field in Ottoman-African research. However, since Egypt was a key location in the coffee trade and played an important role in the introduction of “Turkish coffee culture and tradition,” inscribed to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013, to different cultures, studying the culture of coffee and coffeehouses in Egypt is of utmost importance. In this regard, Evliya Çelebi’s Book of Travels is a unique source. Evliya Çelebi, who lived in the 17th century and traveled to various places from Europe to the Caucasus and from the Arabian deserts to Egypt, brought together his observations in his Book of Travels. This is an exceptional source on the history of coffee trade and culture, describing the culture of coffee and coffeehouses in Egypt in detail, including narratives about the emergence of coffee and the religious views on coffee consumption, depicting coffee as appealing and accessible to all segments of society, detailing the elements considered important in coffee presentation, and explaining the functions of coffeehouses. While traveling throughout Egypt, Evliya Çelebi counted at least one coffeehouse at almost every single stop, he emphasized the gatherings for entertainment held in relatively larger coffeehouses in big cities, and he described coffee culture as a sine qua non for people of all levels. For this reason, in this study, the text of Evliya Çelebi’s Book of Travels is evaluated as a compilation and the culture of coffee and coffeehouses in Egypt is discussed in a comprehensive way. Evliya Çelebi’s text is compared here with other travel writings of historically similar periods, and the descriptions of Evliya Çelebi are evaluated together with archival documents. Thus, this study aims to fill an important gap in the historical adventures of this beverage, which is still a part of our lives today, by crossing centuries and the boundaries of prohibitions. The excavation and reconstruction of the ca. 1638 Waterman site is providing the first comprehensive and detailed look at the architecture and household material culture of an early period Pilgrim house in Plymouth Colony. The small vernacular house was of earth-fast, post-in-ground, and palisaded-wall construction, and burned down in a catastrophic fire after only a short period of occupation. The archaeological features, artifact patterns, and historical documents are integrated with 17th-century anthropomorphic architectural metaphors to reconstruct the house's architecture and the various domestic activities that occurred within and around the house, including foodways, expressions of gender roles, environmental adaptation, and English and Native American cultural exchange. COMMUNITY forests ,FOREST management ,PEASANTS ,RURAL population ,FOREST reserves ,SEVENTEENTH century - Abstract
The seventeenth century was a time when large economic transformations had direct consequences on people's everyday lives. Increased economic pressure was put on rural populations, which affected their management of the resources that they owned in common. This paper examines how peasant communities managed commonly owned forests in Finland during the seventeenth century. The focus is placed on North Ostrobothnia, where large-scale tar production and widespread timber cutting took place to meet the growing need of European states for forest products. Through the study of district court protocols, this article analyses how peasant communities responded to and coped with the new economic climate of the period while local authorities enforced royally sanctioned restrictions and outside interest groups raised demands on what the peasantry could provide. Consequently, the peasantry formalised previously informal rules, regulated cutting activities in relation to the taxable capacity of the peasant households, and re-established borders, which offset privatisation. Due to the favourable dynastic policy in 16th century, the Habsburgs became one of the most potentruling families of Europe. Even though their expansion on Western Europe (Burgundy, Netherlands, Spain and its properties: Naples, Sicily, Sardinia, New World colonies, northern Italy, Portugal) was all most seamless, it was not this smooth when it comes to expansion on Central Europe (Czechia, Hungary, the Crown and Lithuania). The ruleship in Habsburgs’ trophies of Western Europe was heritable and the mentioned countries of Central Europe were elective monarchies. This relation between a way of expansion and a political system in a certain country was also noticed by Polish authors from the first half of the 17th century: Jakub Sobieski (1591-1646), Albrycht Stanisław Radziwiłł (1593-1656) and Stanisław Kobierzycki (ok. 1600-1665). All three of them were referring to the Habsburgian expansion in the XVI century and its main directions. Radziwiłł and Sobieski were writing from the perspective of a chronicler, mostly depicting factual evidence concerning stages of the Habsburg’s expansion in the previous century, Stanisław Kobierzycki created in his work his own, new, interesting historiographic construction. The time perspective let the authors show a complete vision of expansion, indicate its directions and present a subjective opinions on the Habsburgs’ activities in certain countries, especially in Hungary, Czechia, the Crown and Lithuania. Habsburgowie dzięki korzystnej polityce dynastycznej w ciągu XVI wieku wkroczyli do grona najpotężniejszych rodów panujących Europy. O ile Radziwiłł i Sobieski piszą z pozycji kronikarza i głównie przedstawiają faktografię dotyczącą etapów ekspansji Habsburgów w poprzednim stuleciu, to Stanisław Kobierzycki stworzył bardzo ciekawą własną konstrukcję historiograficzną, którą przedstawił w swoim dziele.

Abstract The background of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665, Mauritshuis) has, until recently, been interpreted as a flat dark space. The painting was examined in 2018 as part of the research project The Girl in the Spotlight using a combination of micro- and macro-scale analytical techniques. The stratigraphy of the background was determined from samples mounted as cross-sections, and its material composition was analysed using electron microscopy and chromatographic techniques. The underlayer contains mainly charcoal black, and the glaze contains two organic colourants—indigo and weld—and a copper drier. Deterioration of the glaze has made features in the background difficult to discern with the naked eye. Complementary imaging techniques were able to visualise Vermeer’s signature, and the suggestion of folded fabric (possibly a curtain) on the right side of the painting. The distribution of the layer(s) in the background were imaged using: infrared reflectography (900–1100 nm), multi-scale optical coherence tomography scanning, macroscopic X-ray fluorescence and 3D digital microscopy. Vermeer applied the black underlayer vigorously with overlapping brushstrokes that varied in thickness. When he applied the glaze on top, it levelled out to make a smooth flat surface. The visual effect of the background contrasts the figure of the Girl and projects her forward in space, closer to the viewer.

Abstract: The successes obtained by the Catholic Church in Japan in the 16th century were precarious. In the first half of the 17th century, the Shogunate ended its commercial relationship with the Iberian states and the Catholics communities had to endure suppression. They were swiftly cut off their religious and lay elites; Catholicism gradually became a secret religion. Few scholars have reflected on the perception the first generations of hidden Catholics (or hidden Christians) had of their formal apostasy. I argue that the exclusivist stance of the Church had taken root in Japan. For this reason, the transition to secrecy came along with outbreaks of soteriological tensions within Christendom.

Introduction. The article investigates the issue of the exchange of captives between Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the Truce of Deulino conclusion on December 1 (11), 1618. This truce marked the end of the Time of Troubles in the Moscow State and established peaceful relations between Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for 14 years. The author analyzes the circumstances of the exchange of captives, and also highlights main problems arising in the course of implementing the agreements. Materials. The study uses unpublished documents of the Ambassadorial Prikaz: record lists, petitions, lists of contract records stored in the form of columns and books in the Russian State Archive of Ancient Documents in funds No. 79 “Relations with Poland” and No. 141 “Prikaz Affairs of Old Years”. Results. The Truce of Deulino provided the solution of two urgent issues: transfer of seven border cities and their uezds with subsequent delimitation of the border and exchange of captives. Over the course of time, the first agreements were reached only partly. Admittedly, castles smoothly passed to the Polish-Lithuanian possession, but because of mutual claims the border at the Trubchevsk-Novgorod-Seversk-Bryansk and the Vitebsk-Toropets lines became the part of the Treaty of Polyanovka (1634), which put an end to the Smolensk war. There were problems with the exchange of captives as well, which occurred more than three months later. However, the only culprit here was the Polish-Lithuanian side.

The aim of this paper is to analyze a work of art belonging to the collection of textiles of the Medeiros e Almeida House-Museum collection. It is a wall mirror of English production, with an embroidery frame, made in the third quarter of the 17th century, whose decoration includes a depiction of King Charles II and Queen Catherine of Braganza. The originality of this piece consists in the type of needlework, called stumpwork, that it is the result of the combination of both direct and applied embroidery on pads, creating a relief effect. Produced with a wide variety of techniques and materials, the stumpwork was produced during the 17th century. In order to understand and contextualize the work of art, aspects such as the period and the reasons that gave birth to this curious kind of work, the techniques and materials used, the themes addressed and the respective iconographic sources were approached.

Historiography dealing with the insertion of juízes de fora credits the creation of these offices to an attempt by the crown to increase its control over the chambers of important cities. In this article, our aim is to show that the motivations of the royal authorities went beyond the economic sphere. The application of justice in the colony was in a very precarious situation, and it was necessary to intervene to change this context. In addition to the appointment of the juízes de fora, other measures were designed to evaluate the proper administration of justice in the colony.

The Benedictine Pierre Grimaud (? - before 1674), from the monastery of Mas-Grenier, is the author of a life in verse of Saint Benedict, Le Dret cami del Cél, published in Toulouse in 1659. In some 12,000 lines divided into six books and 48 songs, the author is inspired by the Dialogues of Gregory the Great. Each episode of St Benedict's life is preceded by a section entitled “Mouralo”, explaining how Christians should interpret the different moments of the saint's exemplary life. The biographical account contains vast scenes of a very baroque aesthetic that today might be described as burlesque. Stylistically, Grimaud is following the Toulouse poet Pierre Godolin (1580-1649), to whom he implicitly pays tribute. This similarity to Godolin's work establishes a link of proximity and familiarity with the reader, intended to facilitate the assimilation of the post-Tridentine religious and moral message.

Наука о седми тайнах церковных) published in Vilnius in 1617/18 as part of Trebnik, and the fi rst printed Orthodox manual on moral theology Мир с Богом человеку (Kiev 1669). One of the sources for the fi rst text was the treatise Summa de Instructione Sacerdotum (also known as Summa casuum conscientiae) by the Spanish Jesuit Francisco de Toledo (1534–1596); its basis was a course in moral theology at Collegium Romanum in Rome. The compilers of the Vilnius text made both literal translations of the Spanish text and paraphrases of separate fragments close to the Latin original. The also complemented the fragments taken from de Toledo with speculations on church rituals, quotations from patristic texts, statutes of ecumenical and local councils as well as from civil legal sources. Despite the fact that the Vilnius treatise emerged from Uniate circles, it came to be widely spread among the Orthodox, and it was by means of this text that certain fragments of de Toledo’s treatise found their way into Taking this into account, it is clear that in the interpretation of the seven deadly sins and in the dissertation about alms the compilers made direct use of de Toledo’s treatise. Later, both texts came to be sources for the hand-written compilation on the sacraments by the Muscovite bookman Evfi my Chudovsky (Евфимий Чудовский), who thus contributed to the dissemination of de Toledo’s treatise in the Muscovite tradition as well.

Abstract: The Royal entries can be considered like an important source to study the European society and its cultural development in the Early Modern period. This paper analyses, firstly, how the image of the heretic, mainly the protestant one, was created in these events. The second aim of this research is to map these representations in order to reconstruct the Visual Culture and to know in which areas and chronology had a deeply development.

Europe of the first half of the 17th century was to a large extent marked by one of the biggest conflicts in early modern period – the Thirty Years’ War. Yet, although still a respectable European force at that time, the Republic of Venice managed to avoid any notable military engagement outside the Apennine peninsula. Accordingly, Venetian provinces Stato da mar, including Dalmatia, stayed completely unaffected by this clash of all European leading forces. However, despite the lack of its military interference in Central European affairs, Venice was not exempted from military activities in general. On the contrary, one of the major features of early modern history of the Republic of Venice was constant atrocity with the Ottoman Empire, which once more escalated in 1645 when the long lasting War of Crete began. Although European forces were extremely exhausted by the Thirty Years’ War, military professionals were forced to search another source of employment, and the War of Crete, whose beginnings overlap with the end of the Thirty Years’ War, presented a perfect opportunity for new enterprises. Therefore, many Thirty Years’ War veterans offered their service to the Serenissima bringing their experience from Central European battlefields to the Mediterranean space. In that respect, as being one of the theatres of military operations, the Venetian province of Dalmatia and Albania indirectly got introduced with some notions of the aforementioned European conflict. This lecture will focus on some questions concerning the complex phenomenon of early modern military activities through the case study of the presence of foreign military commanders in the Venetian service during the War of Crete situated in Dalmatia. The research itself is based on the analysis of the archival material from the collection Capi da Guerra held in the Archivio di Stato di Venezia, supported by other archival sources as well. The fact that more than half of the Capi da guerra engaged in the War of Crete were actually veterans from the Thirty Years’ War already shows the significance of their impact in Venetian army. Moreover, according to the sources, many of them at least shortly stayed in Dalmatia. Taken that into account, due to military professionals’ necessity of constant search for work, “echoes” from other European battlefields brought by them all the way to Dalmatian space will primarily serve to show some aspects of dynamism of the early modern military activity. The phenomenon of internationality of European armies of the time, the practice most strongly embraced by the Republic of Venice, certainly brought the intensive exchange of various experiences affecting the Eastern Adriatic coast too. Altogether, besides the aim to elucidate some aspects of the nature of military world within the early modern European society, the main goal of this case study would be to give some ideas and guidelines for further research of early modern Dalmatian military history.

This thesis examines the built environment and culture of Scotland between 1560 and 1645 by analysing church buildings erected during the period. The mid-sixteenth century ecclesiastical Reformation and mid-seventeenth-century political and ecclesiastical tumult in Scotland provide brackets that frame the development of this physical aspect of Scottish cultural history. This thesis draws most heavily on architectural and ecclesiastical history, and creates a compound of the two methods. That new compound brings to the forefront of the analysis the people who produced the buildings and for whom the church institution operated. The evidence used reflects this dual approach: examinations of buildings themselves, where they survive, of documentary evidence, and of contemporary and modern maps support the narrative analysis. The thesis is divided into two sections: Context and Process. The Context section cements the place of the cultural contributions made by ecclesiastical buildings to Scottish history by analysing the ecclesiastical historical, theological, and political contexts of buildings. The historical analysis helps explain why, for example, certain places managed to build churches successfully while others took much longer. The creative tension between these on-the-ground institutions and theoretical ideas contributed to Scotland’s ability to produce cultural spaces. The Process section analyses the narratives of individual buildings in several different steps: Preparing, Building, Occupying, and Relating. These steps connected people with the physical entity of a church building. The Preparing chapter shows how many reasons in Scotland there were to initiate a building project. The Building chapter uses financial, design, and work narratives to tease out the intricacies of individual church stories. Occupying and Relating delve into later histories of individual congregations to understand how churches sat within the world about them. Early modern Scottish church building was immensely varied: the position, style, impact, purpose, and success of church buildings were different across the realm. The manner people building and using churches reacted to their environments played no small role in forming habits for future action. Church buildings thus played a role establishing who early modern Scottish people were, what their institutions did, and how their spirituality was lived daily.

Divided into three parts, this thesis maps a cultural history of Barbary captivity; concentrating on the early 17th century leading up to the Civil Wars; an aspect of British-Muslim contact within which the West Country is overrepresented in the archives. However, this wealth of material contrasts sharply with the paucity of popular and public-facing representations. Situating these accounts within wider contexts, this thesis investigates this contrast, exploring the social, cultural, emotional and economic impact of Barbary captivity upon understandings of place and identity. The first part examines representations of being taken captive, the terror and distress of West Country inhabitants, and the responses and concerns of the authorities. The on-going failure to protect the region and its seafarers exacerbated this distress, producing marginalised geographies of fear and anxiety. The second part explores the themes of memory and identity, arguing that how captives were remembered and forgotten had implications for localised and national identities. For those held in Barbary, families and communities petitioned and undertook ransom collections to redeem the captives, providing reminders to the authorities and appealing for wider remembrance as part of the processes of Christian compassion. Nevertheless, the majority of captives were ‘forgotten’, neither ransomed nor leaving their individual mark within the historical record. This part concludes with a discussion of the role of memory in managing and articulating the ‘trauma’ of captivity. The final part examines mobile and fluid identities, concentrating on returning captives and Islamic converts. Early modern theories of identity situated the humoral body of the captive as susceptible to ‘turning Turk’, contributing to wider negotiations of national, ethnic and religious identities. Cultural anxieties were preoccupied with the ill-defined borders of the geographically displaced material body, generating mutable, hidden and shameful identities. In conclusion, sites of cultural trauma are produced, indicated by the subsequent silence regarding this aspect of localised history.

This thesis examines the impact of different customary manorial tenures on the land transfer activities of rural tenants between 1645 and 1705. The study of land transfer has formed part of the attempt by historians to establish how and why England developed from family-based subsistence farming into large-scale commercialised agriculture before many of its Continental neighbours. A key element in any study of land transfer is the property rights of those undertaking the transfers. England had a variety of customary tenures, and little research has focussed on how they operated and impacted on rural tenant transfer behaviour in the early modern period. This study uses evidence from eight manors in Hampshire with four different types of tenure to explore how they affected what land transfer options the tenants had, and how transfers were used to further family and economic objectives. The types of tenure were copyhold of inheritance; copyhold for three lives; copyhold for three lives where the first could act alone; and a form of customary freehold. The main documentary sources are manorial records augmented by parish, probate, survey and taxation material. The tenurial and landholding structure of the manors is established for 1645 using the Cromwellian Parliamentary Surveys of confiscated ecclesiastical estates. The analysis of subsequent tenant land transfers through to 1705 then examines their volume and any correlation with prices and population movements. The permanent transfers of death/inheritance and the inter vivos land market are analysed to assess the extent to which tenants were attached still to family, or taking part in an active extra-familial investment and sales market; and whether this led to changes over time in farm holding size and distribution. The temporary transfers of sub-letting of land and sub-tenure of dwellings are then analysed. The latter has not been studied before, and uses the Hearth Tax returns to compare occupiers of dwellings with formal tenants. Finally a detailed study of mortgages is made. Previous studies of the use of land as collateral for a mortgage loan have often overlooked the rural tenant as a participant in the credit market, and changes in the laws of usury at the end of the sixteenth century produced a significant uptake of mortgaging in the seventeenth, which makes this study timely. The research reveals that the tenants were very active with their transfers, but that the way in which they were active was determined by tenure. Those with copyhold of inheritance tenure had many options including inheritance, sale, mortgaging, sub-letting, splitting holdings, and conditional surrenders to provide for old age or several children. Those with copyhold for lives were restricted to after-death transfers, shuffling of reversion lives, or sub-letting. However, they adapted, and while Inheritance-tenured tenants adopted mortgages with enthusiasm, Lives tenants sub-let on a large scale. Both thereby acquired financial support from their lands, so that although the land-family bond was not absent, the bond was strongest in terms of using the land as an economic asset. The sub-letting of dwellings enabled Lives tenants to accommodate a landless workforce, where their tenure prevented the splitting of parcels for sale as manorial smallholdings. Aggressive accumulation of land was largely absent, and purchasers of land and mortgage lenders were overwhelmingly local. Some polarisation of holding size was found, but sub-tenure meant that actual farmed units were probably very different. It is concluded that differences in tenure significantly shaped the transfer behaviour of the tenants, so that any future research involving customary tenants must take tenure into account. However, their economic ambitions were found to be similar whichever tenure they had, so that they had to take different means to the same end.

This thesis is situated in three fields of academic research. The first is the on-going reconceptualization of early modern political history conducted under the title of ‘post-revisionism’. Within this field of research, Jurgen Habermas’s notion of an emergent public sphere has proven a key, if contested, heuristic in the production of a more expansive and inclusive political field. The next field is Restoration studies. Whilst this period has enjoyed a much-heralded renaissance of interest in the past quarter century, this has largely bypassed its opening decade, the focus of this study. Finally, this thesis is an intervention in the field of Pepys studies: an extensive corpus of work spanning the academic-popular divide, and extending across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Despite this continued interest in Pepys, there has been no recent study focusing on his participation in the public sphere identified by recent research. This thesis then brings these fields of inquiry together in an attempt to raise questions about all three. In particular it examines questions of space and practice, agency and publicity, and identity and identification. Whilst this study confirms the post-revisionist notion of an expansive field of political discourse, it emphasizes different features of this space than those that have dominated recent research. First it suggests the need for a reconfiguration of public space, alternative modes of publicity and a more hierarchical understanding of interactions within it. Next, in the place of an inclusive and anonymous public, it emphasizes the exclusionary and disciplinary nature of the public and operation of the public sphere. Finally it emphasizes Pepys’ position as not merely spectator of, or participant in this public space/public, but also, increasingly, as its object or effect.

An astrologer predicted to Marie-Louise Gonzaga that she would marry a king. After several unsuccessful attempts, she became ‘Queen of the Scythians’ on her marriage to Władysław IV Vasa. This French ‘précieuse’ who had frequented the fashionable Hôtel de Rambouillet salon discovered a country about which she knew nothing and where she was not welcome. During more than twenty years as wife of Władysław IV (1646–1648) and afterwards of John II Casimir Vasa (1648–1668), she became an influential figure at the court of Warsaw as it was introduced to French culture. She remained unpopular until her death in 1667, having exhausted her energies in trying to reform Polish institutions and to bring a French successor to the throne, the prince de Condé or his son the duc d’Enghien.

The work named "Nuzhat al-Qulûb" one of the important works of his period and written by Hamd-allāh Mustawfī was translated from Persian into Ottoman Turkish under the name of the Translation of the Nuzhat al-Qulûb in the 17th century. With this study, our aim is to introduce the work named the Translation of the Nuzhat al-Qulûb to the world of science, as well as to contribute to the language research of the 17th century Ottoman Turkish. This work, translated for the governor of Bitlis Abdal Khan bin Ziauddin Khan before 1650, contains important information that can shed light on different branches of science. The work, which is encyclopaedic, consists of different sections. Among these sections, the geography section constitutes our research subject. The geography section has remarkable details in terms of being the section with the highest number of leaves and the information it gives about different geographies in that period (latitudes and longitudes of settlements, plants and fruits grown, climatic conditions, physical and psychological structures of people, income sources, etc.). Our study was formed as three main titles and sub-titles related to them. In the first part, we tried to give detailed information about the Persian original of the work, Nuzhat al-Qulûb, in the second part, the Translation of the Nuzhat al-Qulûb, and in the third part detailed information on the geography section of the work, the Translation of the Nuzhat al-Qulûb, which constitutes the essence of our research. The study was terminated with the evaluations made in line with the information obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By the terms of the agreement of 1666 between Browne and a group of Barbadian planters and their associates in Scotland, the foundation was laid for organised joint-stock-based commerce between the English sugar islands and Scotland. He was referred to as "Captain John Browne" and "John Browne, esquire",[6] but since the name is so common in England, Scotland and the colonies, his exact identity remains uncertain. Keywords: Scotland; St Vincent; Barbados; 17th century; Navigation Acts; sugar EN Scotland St Vincent Barbados 17th century Navigation Acts sugar 129 137 9 04/02/21 20210401 NES 210401 The entrepreneur John Browne has been noted by historians as an example of a Scot who participated in transatlantic enterprise prior to Scotland's political union with England in 1707. Along with Browne's patent of 1660 for refining sugar in Scotland came the desire to establish a stable Scottish-Caribbean trade in sugar that was not subject to the restrictions of the English Navigation Acts. DIOCESES - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (pXRF) was used to analyse five 17th and 18th-century bronze Dutch East India Company (VOC) cannon stored in the Huế Royal Antiquities Museum. They exist at the intersection of different relationships between the Vietnamese Trịnh Lords and the VOC, with analysis revealing variations in manufacturing quality and decoration. One cannon in particular, Cannon 54, exhibits significantly elevated iron content and background readings, suggesting heterogeneity caused by different origins. These standards suggest Cannon 54 was cast in a little-known Southeast Asian foundry rather than in the Dutch Republic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the occasion of Lent 1633, a Mercuriale was published in Paris highlighting the shortcomings of the preachers. This first libellus was followed by a letter, Lettre ou Advis, criticizing it, and then by an Apology of the Mercuriale. Beyond the attacks and retaliation, this polemic through print refers to several types of analysis. First of all, it reflects a new place occupied by preaching in the context of the Catholic Reformation and Counter-Reformation that the capital was undergoing at the time. But beyond purely religious issues, it was also, through the printed word, the means of presenting and defending different conceptions of sacred eloquence. Although it remains difficult to identify their authors precisely, one can nevertheless take up the ecclesiological stakes, the rivalry between seculars and regulars as well as between old and new religious orders. These three texts also make it possible to shed light, beyond the form of quarrel and debate, on the injunctions of a literary nature, language correction, urbanity, but also on the performance expectations of the speakers that accompanied the flourishing of Catholic preaching in the 1630s.

Our paper reconstructs the way in which opera creators, both theorists and practitioners, conceive the relationship between words and gestures, by comparing texts that set down stage gestures in writing, between instruction and reception. It seems that they attribute to stage gestures an auxiliary function of communication, semantic clarification and pathetic amplification of affetti and ideas conveyed by words – as the recitar cantando is based on the primacy of the poetic text. We will then question in what way these concepts may condition the very genesis of poetic-dramatic writing. By analysing the stage direction and the relationship between narration and the direct mimesis of movement and gesture in librettos of Ottavio Rinuccini, we will question the notion of theatrical visibility, and its implication in terms of the hierarchy between verbal, musical and corporeal eloquence.

Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, many builders, artists, and architects living on the shores of Italian lakes decided to settle in Poland. Upon arrival, they pursued brilliant careers in various areas of life. Over time, they became Polonized. This was also the case for Giovanni Battista Trevano, who was active in Krakow in the first half of the 17th century and whose lifetime achievement was to become the royal architect of the Vasa kings. This article presents Trevano’s artistic oeuvre and provides insight into his social, economic, and intellectual status in the new community, including the architect’s offspring, who pursued successful careers in army, church, and state offices throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. These new findings are based on manuscripts that have recently been discovered by the author of the article in both Polish and Swiss archives. They allow for expanding the knowledge of the Trevano family’s genealogy and biography, and correcting some unjustified views in the discourse. On the basis of research on new archival sources, one can conclude that Giovanni Battista Trevano was a prominent architect, who is credited with introducing in Poland the early Baroque style, which soon became dominant in northern European art.

ETHNICITY , *HISTORIOGRAPHY - Abstract
The earliest history of the Swedish Realm's northern regions has long been contested in historiography. This article primarily analyses views in seventeenth-century Swedish historiography concerning the origins of Finns in this region, in terms of source usage and ethnic identities. Gothicist views, emphasizing Swedish greatness were based on biblical notions of a postdiluvial settlement, linking sources from classical antiquity to Sweden via etymological comparisons. Combined with a reliance on Icelandic sagas and the uncritical use of secondary sources, these notions gave rise, among others, to the idea of an ancient, partially Finnish, Amazon warrior realm in Ostrobothnia. Conceptions surrounding the origins of Birkarl tax collectors were mostly based on traditions collected in the early 1600s, and later that century, they became associated with a migration of Finns to the north thought to have taken place in the late 13th century. Finns were given a role in the region's history even within Gothicist historiography too. The ethnicity of these early settlements does not seem to have been overly emphasized though – indeed the boundary between Finns and Swedes was seen more as something fluid – indicating that ethnosymbolist theories of nationalism overstate the importance of ethnic identity in early modern Sweden. 399.

- Abstract
We analyze the poetics of the 17th century around the birth of opera, trying to clarify their philosophical assumptions. I will show that the key ideas of Mei, Galilei and Bardi, such as the distinction between ancients and moderns, the critique of polyphony versus monody and the subordination of music to poetry, are founded on the distinction between liberal and servile arts. The new idea of realizing a commedia tutta in musica, contrary to what the myth of the camerata, was not relevant and was only introduced ad hoc by Rinuccini and Caccini, followed later by other theorists who hardly questioned the old ideas. Only Pietro della Valle will lay the foundations of a new poetics, closer to the Modern Age than to the Ancient Age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper aims at assessing the frequency of dental non-metric traits in the 17th century population of Iaşicity (Romania). The analysed sample consists of 73 lower (mandibular) second molars (M2), and the evaluated non-metric characters are based on the criteria of Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS). Considering the degree of the teeth wear, only the following non-metric traits were analysed: anterior fovea, groove patterns, cusp numbers and hypoconulid. The most common occlusal morphology in the analysed sample of mandibular second molar shave a pattern with four cusps and "+" groove. The fifth cusp is represented by large size hypoconulid and it is present in only 9.72% of the sample. The anterior fovea is present mostly in 41.1% of the dental sample; it has a large variability, dominating the molars with a weak ridge that connects the mesial faces of protoconid and metaconid cusps (score 1). This study is a preliminary one, and the analysis of non-metric characters will be extended to other archaeological human populations from Romania. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
