Aphids are among the most economically significant pests in cereal crops worldwide. Despite high interest in the natural control of aphids by applying natural enemies, intercropping and companion planting, the concurrent effects of the combinations of these methods due to their synergistic or antagonistic interactions remain largely unknown for both aphids and their host crops. Here we identify the relative effectiveness of simultaneous bottom–up and top–down factors in controlling one of the most economically important species of cereal aphids, the bird cherry‐oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi L. For this, we conducted microcosm experiments using a full‐factorial design of three aphid‐control treatments including predator presence (i.e., lacewing larvae of Chrysoperla carnea), host‐plant intercropping (i.e., barley alone vs barley in combination with wheat and rye) and companion planting with an aphid‐repellent plant (garlic), and estimated their direct, indirect and interactive effects on aphid density. Our results show strong simultaneous top–down control of the aphid population by predation and bottom–up control by both host‐plant biomass and companion planting with garlic. The use of garlic as a companion plant for cereal crops in our study neither altered crop biomass nor suppressed the efficiency of aphid predator. Our findings suggest that the simultaneous application of aphid predator and companion planting with garlic holds promise as a potential strategy for the natural control of cereal aphid populations on grain crops, without generating related agroecosystem disservices, such as loss in crop production and deterioration of the natural enemies of pests. However, given the controlled lab conditions and limited timeframe of our study, further research is needed to confirm its effectiveness in field conditions to ensure its broader applicability in sustainable agricultural practices. Agricultural improvements that reduce conventional pesticide use and support environmental aims are a priority. Current approaches develop promising alternative products but meet significant challenges in bringing them to market. This article reports findings of an Association of Applied Biologists event at which delegates from relevant industry sectors discussed the establishment of an effective integrated pest management innovation system linking multiple stakeholders. Interrelated recommendations were agreed upon, focused on structured gap analysis, co‐design processes reflecting the complete innovation system, the approval process, application equipment, enhancing grower confidence, integrating knowledge exchange activities, promulgation of public good information and the need for an overarching national action plan and supporting legislation. One of the most damaging pathogens of pinewood is the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, which could cause an adverse effect on the ecosystems of forests and the commerce of timber. Therefore, it is crucial to realize rapid and accurate B. xylophilus detection. In this work, an accelerated strand exchange amplification method (ASEA) was established to detect B. xylophilus for the first time. By integrating with fast nucleic acid extraction, the whole detection procedure could be finished within 30 min, dramatically shortened the detection time. The ASEA method exhibited high specificity towards B. xylophilus and the detection limit for B. xylophilus plasmid DNA was as low as 1.0 × 100 copies/μL. Furthermore, the ASEA approach also exhibited accurate detection for B. xylophilus when applied to actual pinewood samples, meeting the demand of B. xylophilus detection in realistic scenario. The species Ceratitis capitata (Weidemann, 1824), known as Mediterranean fruit fly, is an important pest for fruit trees worldwide. The control of this pest is carried out mainly by the chemical method, using organophosphorus, pyrethroid, and spinosyn pesticides. The lethality of doses of malathion, deltamethrin, and spinetoram on immature and adult stages of C. capitata was evaluated under laboratory conditions. The egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages were exposed to doses of pesticides through contact and ingestion. The doses were obtained by decreasing the recommended doses (malathion: 200 mL L−1, deltamethrin: 50 mL L−1, and spinetoram: 120 g ha−1) with intervals of 20%, this being the minimum dose used. The variables evaluated were: viability of eggs and pupae and mortality of larvae and adults. Application of spinetoram and malathion through contact caused high mortality of adults, with LD90 at the sub‐doses of 43.74% (52.48 g c.p. ha−1) and 68.81% (137.62 mL c.p. 100 L−1), respectively. The mortality of adults by ingestion of deltamethrin and malathion allowed us to estimate only the LD50. Only the pesticide deltamethrin presented LD50 for the egg stage. The larval and pupal stages the effect of the pesticides on larvae treated through contact resulted in 52% mortality with spinetoram and 62% with malathion. The mortality of larvae and pupae treated through ingestion was below 20% for the three pesticides. Sub‐doses of spinetoram (43.74%; 52.48 g c.p. ha−1) and malathion (68.81%; 137.62 mL c.p. 100 L−1) can be used since they present a 90% efficiency on C. capitata adult when applied by contact under laboratory conditions. Arachis pintoi, commonly known as pinto or forage peanut, is used mainly in consortia with grass pastures and as cover plant. In addition to increasing the productivity of livestock and plantations, it contributes to the mitigation of environmental impacts (reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) and soil improvement (nitrogen fixation, reduction of fertilizers use), as well as to pests and disease management. Several cultivars that are tolerant to specific climates and soil conditions are suitable to be used as ground covers in agroforestry and silvopastoral systems, orchards, and plantations. Biotechnological and phytochemical investigations revealed the potential of pinto peanut as a sustainable source of resveratrol and other stilbenoids. Extracts from plants grown under natural conditions and from materials obtained in vitro displayed allelopathic, anthelmintic, or antioxidant activities. Other studies revealed the potential of pinto peanut for erosion control, phytoremediation, seed and essential oils production, materials for animal tissue engineering, synthesis of nanoparticles for drug delivery, and as green biorefineries to produce proteins, biochemicals, and biomaterials. Globodera pallida, an obligate sedentary endoparasite, is a major economic pest that causes substantial potato yield losses. This research aimed to study the effects of gene silencing of three FMRFamide-like peptides (FLPs) genes to reduce G. pallida infestation on potato plants by using kaolinite nanoclay as a carrier to deliver dsRNAs via drenching. A dsRNA dosage of 2.0 mg/ml silenced flp-32c by 89.5%, flp-32p by 94.6%, and flp-2 by 94.3%. J2s incubated for 5 and 10 h showed no phenotypic changes. However, J2s of G. pallida efficiently uptake dsRNA of all targeted genes after 15 h of incubation. On the other hand, J2s that had been kept for 24 h had a rigid and straight appearance. Under fluorescence microscopy, all dsRNA-treated nematodes showed fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) signals in the mouth, nervous system, and digestive system. The untreated population of J2s did not show any FITC signals and was mobile as usual. The drenching of potato cultivar Kufri Jyoti with the dsRNA-kaolinite formulations induced deformation and premature death of J2s, compared with untreated J2s that entered J3 or J4 stages. Corn stem borer, Sesamia cretica Lederer, is an important pest of corn and sugarcane worldwide. The validation of a linear and some selected nonlinear models in semi‐field and field conditions regarding the development time of the Varamin and Rey populations of S. cretica was performed. Our previously published laboratory data on the development rate and thermal constant of the pest for both populations were used as baseline information. The results showed that to construct a forecasting model, the lower temperature threshold of the Ikemoto model and estimated thermal constant of semi‐field or field conditions could provide a more accurate model. In the management of corn stem borer, when the thermal constant of the environment reached 44874.45 DH and 51,644 degree‐hour (DH) for the populations of Varamin and Rey, respectively, in the second generation on corn, which coincides with the peak of eggs, the necessary measures for inhibition should be prepared. Pest control was recommended when it reached 45857.01 DH and 52692.56 DH in Varamin and Rey, respectively, which coincides with the emergence of neonate larvae. Dictyophora rubrovolvata and Pleurotus ostreatus are economically important mushrooms in China. Bradysia minpleuroti Yang et Zhang and Coboldia fuscipes (Meigen, 1830) are important mushroom flies that damage the two mushrooms. In this study, we used the age‐stage, two‐sex life table method to assess the fitness of B. minpleuroti and C. fuscipes when they were respectively fed on D. rubrovolvata and P. ostreatus. Our results showed that the first (2.39 days) and second (1.41 days) instar larvae, pupa (2.87 days) and total longevity (18.19 days) of B. minpleuroti were shorter when fed on P. ostreatus than fed on D. rubrovolvata (3.46, 1.86, 3.10 and 20.19 days). B. minpleuroti had similar fecundity when fed on the two edible mushrooms. B. minpleuroti had higher values of net reproductive rate (R0, 87.73), intrinsic rate of increase (r, 0.2604 day‐1), and finite rate of increase (λ, 1.2974 day‐1) and shorter mean generation time (T, 17.19 days) when fed on P. ostreatus than fed on D. rubrovalvata (26.96, 0.1659 day‐1, 1.1805 day‐1, 19.85 days). The developmental period of larvae and pupa stages of C. fuscipes were significantly different fed on the two edible mushrooms. Female fecundity, total longevity, R0, r, λ and T of C. fuscipes were not significantly different between the two edible mushrooms. We found that fitness of B. minpleuroti larvae had higher fitness when fed on P. ostreatus than fed on D. rubrovolvata. However, there was no significant difference in the fitness of C. fuscipes larvae when fed on the two edible mushrooms. This study has provided valuable data and insights by delving into the adaptability of two significant pests on two edible mushrooms, thereby facilitating the development of more effective pest management strategies and contributing to the advancement of the mushroom industry. Rice cultivation under film mulching is an integrated management technology that can conserve water, increase soil temperature, improve yield, and enhance water and nitrogen use efficiencies. Despite these advantages, the system does have its drawbacks, such as soil organic matter reduction and microplastic pollution, which impede the widespread adoption of film mulching cultivation in China. Nonetheless, the advent of degradable film, controlled-release fertilizer, organic fertilizer, and film mulching machinery is promoting the development of rice film mulching cultivation. This review outlines the impact of rice cultivation under film mulching on soil moisture, soil temperature, soil fertility, greenhouse gas emissions, weed control, and disease and pest management. It also elucidates the mechanism of changes in rice growth, yield and quality, water use efficiency, and nitrogen use efficiency. This paper incorporates a review of published research articles and discusses some uncertainties and shortcomings associated with rice cultivation under film mulching. Consequently, prospective research directions for the technology of rice film mulching cultivation are outlined, and recommendations for future research into rice cultivation under film mulching are proposed. The release of biological control agents has been an important means of controlling invasive species for over 150 years. While these releases have led to the sustainable control of over 250 invasive pest and weed species worldwide, a minority have caused environmental harm. A growing recognition of the risks of biological control led to a focus on risk assessment beginning in the 1990s along with a precipitous decline in releases. While this new focus greatly improved the safety of biological control, it came at the cost of lost opportunities to solve environmental problems associated with invasive species. A framework that incorporates benefits and risks of biological control is thus needed to understand the net environmental effects of biological control releases. We introduce such a framework, using native biodiversity as the common currency for both benefits and risks. The model is based on interactions among four categories of organisms: (1) the biological control agent, (2) the invasive species (pest or weed) targeted by the agent, (3) one or more native species that stand to benefit from the control of the target species, and (4) one or more native species that are at risk of being harmed by the released biological control agent. Conservation values of the potentially benefited and harmed native species are incorporated as well, and they are weighted according to three axes: vulnerability to extinction, the ecosystem services provided, and cultural significance. Further, we incorporate the potential for indirect risks to native species, which we consider will result mainly from the ecological process of agent enrichment that may occur if the agent exploits but does not control the target pest or weed. We illustrate the use of this framework by retrospectively analyzing the release of the vedalia beetle, Novius (= Rodolia) cardinalis, to control the cottony cushion scale, Icerya purchasi, in the Galapagos Islands. While the framework is particularly adaptable to biological control releases in natural areas, it can also be used in managed settings, where biological control protects native species through the reduction of pesticide use. Purpose: Rice agroecosystems must grow sustainably to meet the increasing demand for food. A fish-rice co-culture was introduced to conserve rice agroecosystems in farming communities. This study aims to assess the technical, socio-economic and environmental outcomes as the pillars of sustainability. Design/methodology/approach: This study employs a mixed qualitative-quantitative approach to assess a sustainable intensification programme's impact on sustainability. Data were collected using group discussions and self-assessment surveys. The study sites cover East Java and West Java provinces. Findings: This study found that rice-fish co-culture improved the sustainability of the farming system. Farmers applied pest and disease management and partially substituted inorganic fertilisers with organic ones. The outcomes were apparent in the diversity of harvested products. Economically, the rice yield increased, the production costs decreased and the resultant increased income. Environmentally, the fish-rice co-culture was sound because of ecological inputs. The population of natural enemies of pests increased. Socially, fish-rice co-culture was acceptable to the community since there was no conflict with the local governments, local norms and religions and the existing farming practices of other crops. Research limitations/implications: This study was based on five groups as case studies, such that the result might not represent the general condition. In recent years, smart agriculture has gained strength due to the application of industry 4.0 technologies in agriculture. As a result, efforts are increasing in proposing artificial vision applications to solvemany problems. However, many of these applications are developed separately. Many academic works have proposed solutions integrating image classification techniques through IoT platforms. For this reason, this paper aims to answer the following research questions: (1)What are themain problems to be solvedwith smart farming IoT platforms that incorporate images? (2) What are the main strategies for incorporating image classification methods in smart agriculture IoT platforms? and (3) What are the main image acquisition, preprocessing, transmission, and classification technologies used in smart agriculture IoT platforms? This study adopts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. We searched Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, and Springer Link databases from January 2018 to July 2022. Fromwhich we could identify five domains corresponding to (1) disease and pest detection, (2) crop growth and health monitoring, (3) irrigation and crop protectionmanagement, (4) intrusion detection, and (5) fruits and plant counting. There are three types of strategies to integrate image data into smart agriculture IoT platforms: (1) classification process in the edge, (2) classification process in the cloud, and (3) classification process combined. The main advantage of the first is obtaining data in real-time, and its main disadvantage is the cost of implementation. On the other hand, the main advantage of the second is the ability to process high-resolution images, and its main disadvantage is the need for high-bandwidth connectivity. Energy use analysis and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are among the most important aspects regarding the sustainability performance of a farming system. The aim of this study was to assess the environmental impact, in terms of energy consumption and GHG emissions in thirty vineyards located on Crete, Greece, and deliver a digital, decision support tool (DST). A simplified life cycle approach was used to collect data from the vineyards up to farm gate, located in the top wine-producing Cretan municipalities, regarding farming practices, inputs, and yield for a 2-year period. Sum energy and non-renewable energy intensity and efficiency were calculated. GHG emissions were estimated in terms of CO2 equivalents, following IPCC methodology, while the emissions intensity is also reported. Fossil fuels consumed by machinery for weed management, transportation, soil management, pest control, and synthetic fertilizers were the practices found to be accountable for the higher energy consumption. Synthetic fertilizers and fossil fuel consumption were the main sources of GHG emissions, followed by burning of the pruning residues. Omitting burning pruning residues, reducing tillage intensity, and replacing mechanical weed management are highlighted as the main practices that can improve the sustainability of viticulture on Crete. Making use of the collected data, a crop-specific DST, named "ECO2VINE", for calculating a vineyard's energy use and GHG emissions was developed, validated, and made publicly available. Diseases and pests are a growing threat to small and large banana farmers and can cause catastrophic losses. Diseases affect all parts of the plant and are caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses. Although their impact is generally less devastating, pests, mainly insects and nematodes, are also significant factors. For better management of these diseases and pests, several technologies and or agroecological practices are often used by small farmers but are not often known or disseminated. Here, we did a meta-analysis combined with a review to describe banana diseases and pests as well as agroecological methods for their management. On the basis of the meta-analysis, 11 main bananas pests and diseases have been identified. Depending on the importance of their management by agroecological methods, Mycosphaerella fijiensis was most studied here (Z-value = 0.48), followed by the nematodes Radopholus similis (Z-value = 0.32) and Helicotylenchus multicinctus (Z-value = 0.32). The insect pests Erionota thrax (Z-value = 0.28), Cosmopolites sordidus (Z-value = 0.23) and Polytus mellerborgi (Z-value = 0.22) were also widely studied. Banana Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD) was moderately studied (Z-value = 0.26). There was a significant positive response of pest and disease to agroecological practices / technologies. Agricultural technologies involving the use of predators to control pests and the use of biopesticides were the most demonstrated in studies. Purpose: Agricultural losses caused by pests have a profound impact on African and Asian countries. In this context, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci is an important global pest and attacks many vegetables. However, conventional pesticides cause unwanted effects on the environment and consumers, in addition to the development of resistance. Therefore, sustainable resources have been used and researched, including those of natural origin. Research Method: The objective of this review was to compile and discuss studies of essential oils found in Asian and African countries with action against B. tabaci. For this, scientific studies on active essential oils were searched in databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. Findings: The work explored essential oils from 48 different species belonging to 19 families. Notably, the families Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, Lauraceae, Myrtaceae, and Poaceae presented the highest number of studies. Among the evaluated oils, Allium sativum oil demonstrated potent fumigant insecticidal action. Similarly, essential oils from Cinnamomum camphora, Thymbra spicata, Rosmarinus officinalis, and Laurus nobilis exhibited high activity against pests. Promising essential oils with high potency against pests also include Mentha pulegium, Mentha viridis, and Syzygium aromaticum. Research Limitations: Despite the diversity of active essential oils against B. tabaci, further studies on the development and stability of formulations must be carried out. Purpose: Fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda J.E Smith is an invasive pest of maize crops that has been recently reported in Pakistan (2019). Synthetic insecticides are the main choice of local farmers to control this deadly pest, but with continuous use of these pesticides health and environmental issues have arisen, which demands an alternative control measure. Considering this pest’s significance, this study was conducted to determine the potentiality of Guava (Psidium guajava L.) against the third instar larvae of S. frugiperda; which is considered an effective repellent effect. Research Method: The P. guajava leaves were extracted with methanol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, and chloroform; each extract was prepared at different concentrations of 125, 250, 500, and 1000 ppm. Later, the larval mortality was recorded at different intervals of 24, 48, 72, and 96 hrs, and antifeedant activity at 24 hrs. Findings: The highest mortality of 92.86% was observed on methanol extract at 1000ppm after 96 hrs. The mortality on all crude extracts and at every concentration increased at different intervals of the observation and reached the maximum at 96 hrs. However, the LC50 and LC90 values of 154.77 and 865.3ppm after 96 hrs were recorded in methanol. Similarly, the highest antifeedant activity was 87.5% recorded in methanol at 1000ppm, and the lowest antifeedant activity of 22.58% was noted in chloroform extracts at 125ppm concentration. It showed that the antifeedant activity relied on a concentrated dose; meanwhile, the P. guajava with methanol crude extracts successfully stopped the feeding activity of S. frugiperda. Originality/ Value: Therefore, based on the obtained results, the P. guajava leaf extracts are highly recommended, particularly for their extraction with methanol and n-hexane which showed the highest larval mortality and antifeedant activity of S. frugiperda. Purpose: Environment-friendly pest management techniques are safer, sustainable over the years, better for ecosystem services, and more convenient with lower risks. Netting and or bagging is one of the most suitable tools for pest management. To develop environmentally friendly management techniques against the common cutworm (Spodoptera litura Fab.), we compared the cost-effectiveness of netting and bagging for the production of bell peppers in Bangladesh. Research Method: The study was undertaken in the field of Entomology, at Sylhet Agricultural University, Bangladesh, from October 2018 to April 2019. Netting and bagging significantly improved plant morphology, fruit quality, and yield and managed the insect pests. Findings: In this paper, we tried to bring forth different prospects of netting and bagging in bell peppers to manage the common cutworm. Superior-quality fruits were harvested from the netting/bagging treatment compared to the control. Netting and bagging treatment increased yield by more than 10-fold over control and decreased fruit infestation to 10.67%. The maximum marginal benefit-cost ratio (MBCR = 18.06) was achieved from the netting/bagging treatment, while the lowest MBCR (7.29) was obtained from bagging only. Superior-quality fruits were obtained using white paper bags compared to brown paper bags. The common cutworm first appeared in February and gradually increased with the progress of the season, indicating that netting and bagging need to be applied at the early fruiting stage of bell pepper. Research Limitations: The study focused on the environment-friendly management of common cutworms in bell peppers, revealing impressive results, but these need to be validated across the locations. Pesticide spraying is a cost-effective way to control crop pests and diseases. The effectiveness of this method relies on the deposition and distribution of the spray droplets within the targeted application area. There is a critical need for an accurate and stable detection algorithm to evaluate the liquid droplet deposition parameters on the water-sensitive paper (WSP) and reduce the impact of image noise. This study acquired 90 WSP samples with diverse coverage through field spraying experiments. The droplets on the WSP were subsequently isolated, and the coverage and density were computed, employing the fixed threshold method, the Otsu threshold method, and our Genetic-Otsu threshold method. Based on the benchmark of manually measured data, an error analysis was conducted on the accuracy of three methods, and a comprehensive evaluation was carried out. The relative error results indicate that the Genetic-Otsu method proposed in this research demonstrates superior performance in detecting droplet coverage and density. The relative errors of droplet density in the sparse, medium, and dense droplet groups are 2.7%, 1.5%, and 2.0%, respectively. The relative errors of droplet coverage are 1.5%, 0.88%, and 1.2%, respectively. These results demonstrate that the Genetic-Otsu algorithm outperforms the other two algorithms. The proposed algorithm effectively identifies small-sized droplets and accurately distinguishes the multiple independent contours of adjacent droplets even in dense droplet groups, demonstrating excellent performance. Overall, the Genetic-Otsu algorithm offered a reliable solution for detecting droplet deposition parameters on WSP, providing an efficient tool for evaluating droplet deposition parameters in UAV pesticide spraying applications. The Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is a highly destructive lepidopteran pest known for its extensive feeding on maize (Zea mays L.) and other crops, resulting in a substantial reduction in crop yields. Understanding the metabolic response of maize to FAW infestation is essential for effective pest management and crop protection. Metabolomics, a powerful analytical tool, provides insights into the dynamic changes in maize's metabolic profile in response to FAW infestation. This review synthesizes recent advancements in metabolomics research focused on elucidating maize's metabolic responses to FAW and other lepidopteran pests. It discusses the methodologies used in metabolomics studies and highlights significant findings related to the identification of specific metabolites involved in FAW defense mechanisms. Additionally, it explores the roles of various metabolites, including phytohormones, secondary metabolites, and signaling molecules, in mediating plant–FAW interactions. The review also examines potential applications of metabolomics data in developing innovative strategies for integrated pest management and breeding maize cultivars resistant to FAW by identifying key metabolites and associated metabolic pathways involved in plant–FAW interactions. To ensure global food security and maximize the potential of using metabolomics in enhancing maize resistance to FAW infestation, further research integrating metabolomics with other omics techniques and field studies is necessary. This study aimed to investigate the variation in the chemical composition of Origanum compactum essential oils (EOs) from four geographically distinct locations. Additionally, we evaluated their antioxidant properties and potential inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE), tyrosinase, and α-glucosidase enzymes and their insecticidal proprieties. Notably, this research also marks the first examination of the mineral composition of O. compactum. The chemical composition was determined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which identified thymol (28.72–80.39%), carvacrol (6.54–61.84%), p-cymene (0.27–8.64%), linalool (1.44–1.96%), and caryophyllene oxide (1.34–1.56%) as the major constituents. Concurrently, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) revealed significant levels of macro and microelements, including calcium (295.50–512.20 mg/kg), potassium (195.99–398.45 mg/kg), magnesium (59.70–98.45 mg/kg), and iron (43.55–112.60 mg/kg). The EOs demonstrated notable antiradical activities through DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), and β-carotene bleaching assays. Regarding the insecticidal effect, all studied essential oils showed a significant toxicity against C. capitata adults, and the toxicity was dose and time dependent. The highest insecticidal effect was observed for O. compactum essential oils collected from Gouman (LC50 = 2.515 µL/mL, LC90 = 5.502 µL/mL) after 48 h of treatment. Furthermore, at a concentration of 1 mg/mL, the EOs exhibited strong inhibitory effects against AChE (84.75–94.01%), tyrosinase (84.75–94.01%), and α-glucosidase (79.90–87.80%), highlighting their potential as natural inhibitors of these enzymes. The essential oils of O. compactum contain components that could be used as a basis for synthetizing derivatives or analogs with potential medicinal applications and pest control properties. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is an invasive and serious polyphagous crop pest that damages around 353 plants belonging to 72 plant families around the world. It has a global distribution and serious pest status around the world. Identification of this pest at early instar is difficult due to morphological similarity with other Spodoptera spp. For the control and management of this pest, rapid identification method is required. We developed a novel and rapid assay based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) utilizing mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I gene (COX I). The species-specific primers for S. frugiperda were designed, and the LAMP specificity was cross-checked with five other closely related species of moths and found that only S. frugiperda yielded positive results among others within 45 min at 65℃. The LAMP sensitivity test showed that the lowest concentration of genomic DNA required for this assay is 100 fg, much less than compared to normal polymerase chain reaction where 1 ng is required. This assay can be performed on any heating block without the use of visualization on an agarose gel-based method. Further, validation using simple DNA extraction protocols proved that our developed primers will identify species within 30 min and are suitable for on-spot field detection. Here a new cost-effective, rapid and highly sensitive method is represented, which is very useful for the detection of invasive pests in quarantine stations as well as for improving pest management strategies in agriculture fields toward sustainable crop production. Rice samples infested with saw-toothed grain beetles have been collected from a local market in the city of Kirkuk/Iraq. The study was conducted in Kirkuk during the period 15 December 2023 to 25 April 2024, at College of Pure Sciences at the University of Kirkuk, Iraq. Chitosan was utilised in the study to examine its toxic effects at three different concentrations (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 ppm) on the life cycle of the saw-toothed grain beetle, focusing on oviposition rate, duration of larval and pupal stages, and mortality rate of its adults. The chemical demonstrated a substantial effect in lowering the number of eggs laid as the concentration increased, with the control treatment registering the highest oviposition rate of 314.14 eggs compared to 209.31, 117.03, and 61.12 eggs for chitosan concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 ppm, respectively. The shortest egg incubation period recorded was 8.17 days, Incubation times for chitosan treatments increased significantly to 9.66, 11.69, and 14.00 days for concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 ppm, respectively, demonstrating an inverse association with concentration levels. Furthermore, the emergence rate of beetles decreased as concentration increased. The emergence counts for the chitosan treatments at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 ppm dropped to 133.11, 55.69, and 30.12 beetles, respectively, with the control treatment having the highest average emergence of 289.43 beetles. The larval stage duration showed a direct proportionality with chitosan concentrations, with the 1.5 ppm concentration marking the longest larval duration at 22.00 days, significantly surpassing all other concentrations. The control treatment recorded the shortest duration at 13.56 days, whereas 0.5 and 1.0 ppm concentrations resulted in duration of 17.19 and 19.66 days, respectively. For the pupal stage, significant differences were observed with increasing chitosan concentration; the control treatment displayed the shortest pupal duration at 4.33 days. A direct relationship was found between the concentrations and pupal stage duration, reducing the period to 6.00, 7.59, and 9.07 days for concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 ppm, respectively. Chitosan exhibited significant differences from the second day of the experiment, as the mortality rate increased with concentration and over time. The concentration of 1.5 ppm showed the highest mortality rate at 98.62% after 16 days, whereas the control treatment recorded the lowest rate at 33.17%. The effect of supplementary food spray on the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) and beneficial insects (predominantly predatory insects) was studied in commercial maize field experiments from 2020 to 2022. The food spray formulation was developed from local ingredients in Vietnam, both with and without neem extract. The sugar-based rice dough product attracted and sustained beneficial insects, significantly reducing fall armyworm populations. Compared to conventional insecticide treatments, the net margin achieved in plots treated with food spray was higher ($3,467) to $3,394 in the conventional insecticide-treated plots demonstrating its economic viability (1 AUD=17.28 VND). Our study observed an average predator-to-prey ratio of 9.2:1 per plant in the food-spray-treated plots, and that was effective in managing the fall armyworm throughout the season. We propose that this ratio can serve as a valuable parameter and decisionmaking tool in food spray-based Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs against fall armyworm in maize fields. The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae), causes significant damage to olive crops worldwide. However, the factors affecting its survival under water deprivation have not been studied yet. In this study, the water deprivation resistance of male and female olive fruit flies was measured at three ages in virgin and mated adults fed either a full or a restricted diet. The experiments (24 treatments) were conducted under constant laboratory conditions, using insects collected in the wild and reared on olives. Additionally, a baseline experiment was conducted to provide data on the insects' life expectancy under no-stress conditions. Our findings revealed that males showed much less resistance under water deprivation compared to females. Younger adults endured for longer than older ones, and adults fed a restricted diet endured water deprivation longer than those fed a full diet. Our results suggest that during periods of water scarcity, releasing sterile males is most effective, because the wild male population decreases. Since females of reproductive age are more resistant, this should ensure a higher number of matings with sterile males. Yellow sticky traps (YSTs) are common tools for monitoring the greenhouse whitefly (GWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), which can cause significant yield reduction in different greenhouse crops such as cucumber and tomato. In recent years, sticky traps equipped with green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have also been (successfully) tested for catching GWFs. However, no study has observed GWF population dynamics at low population densities using such LED traps for early pest detection in crop stands. Therefore, a greenhouse experiment was conducted aiming to investigate the correlation between GWF populations on tomato crops (Solanum lycopersicum L. (Solanaceae)) and the numbers caught on yellow sticky traps and green LED traps, respectively. A small number of whiteflies was released into two pest-free greenhouse cabins, and populations on plants and traps were monitored for the duration of two months. The results show that the GWFs caught on LED traps correlate significantly positive with the population density on the tomato crops. Such a correlation was not found for standard YSTs. Moreover, the results indicate the possibility of early pest detection using LED traps. The findings are discussed in the context of the whiteflies' ecology and population dynamics in greenhouses. Integrated pest management is a pest control strategy that combines biological and chemical methods to reduce environmental pollution and protect biodiversity. Recent research indicated that the fear caused by predators had a significant effect on the growth, development, and reproductive processes of prey. Therefore, we have proposed a pest-natrual enemy system, which is a nonlinear state-dependent feedback control model that incorporated the fear effect in the predator-prey relationship. We discussed impulsive sets and phase sets of the model and derived an expression for the Poincaré map. Furthermore, we analyzed the existence and stability of order-periodic solutions and explored the existence of order-k (k ≥ 2) periodic solutions. Mathematical modeling and analysis of a crop-pest interacting system helps us to understand the dynamical properties of the system such as stability, bifurcations and chaos. In this article, a predator-prey type mathematical model for pest control using bio-pesticides has been analysed to study the global stability property of the interior equilibrium point. Moreover, the occurrence and orbital stability of Hopf bifurcating limit cycle solutions have been studied using ref30’s conditions. Analytical and numerical results show that the interior equilibrium of the pest control model is globally asymptotically stable. Insect pests are serious threats to agriculture, forestry, and human health because they damage crops and trees and spread diseases. Chemical insecticides control insect pests quickly and effectively, protecting crops. Environmental and health concerns arise from their use. Long‐term exposure can cause pesticide‐resistant insects, requiring stronger chemicals. Beneficial insects and wildlife may be harmed. Some chemical insecticides persist in the environment, causing long‐term ecological damage. The present study was to isolate, identify, and characterize entomopathogenic fungi from the soil, evaluate their pathogenicity against major insect species, and evaluate the non‐target effect on soil bioindicator species. Bioassay results show that Beauveria bassiana conidia are more pathogenic to all three species at 10 days after treatment, causing 100% mortality in Halyomorpha halys and Tenebrio molitor within 10 days. The lethal concentration showed lower LC50 values of 9.5 × 103 conidia/mL in H. halys, 2.6 × 103 conidia/mL in T. molitor, and 8.3×104 conidia/mL in P. japonica, B. bassiana treatment results showed a shortened insect life time LT50 of H. halys (6.0 days), T. molitor (5.3 days), and P. japonica (6.9 days). In Africa, mixed cropping and intercropping are widely practiced, boosting the provision of ecosystem services such as improved pest control, nutrient cycling, and systems profitability. This study aimed at characterizing the role of associated crops in organic banana and plantain cropping systems and investigating their contribution to pest control and improved productivity of the system. The type of associated crops, crop productivity/profitability, and arthropod communities were assessed in 12 organic banana farmer's fields randomly selected. The attractiveness potential of predator arthropods in the plots of three vegetable species and cowpea associated with organic plantains was evaluated using an experimental site. In total, 2112 arthropod specimens were collected in organic banana farms including 975 individuals of predatory arthropods. The abundance of several predators including seven-spot ladybird Coccinella septempunctata, staphylinids Staphylinus sp., ants Camponotus sp., spiders Araneus sp. and some herbivore species variegated locust Zonocerus variegatus and vegetable leafminer Liriomyza sativae was manly observed in the gardens. The abundance of the three pest herbivores Chaetanaphothrips, Southern Green Stink Bug Nezara viridula, and Diabrotica virgifera were lower in the presence of associated plant species. Mixed gardens (or intercrops) had a significant effect on the overall productivity and financial profitability of the banana and plantain cropping systems. Groundnut and banana and plantain associations had the highest average gross margin per hectare followed by association with maize. In the experimental site, the predator abundance was highest on Vernonia amygdalina followed by Vigna unguiculata and Ocimum gratissimum. Metarhizium (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) has a multifunctional life cycle, establishing as a plant endophyte and acting as entomopathogenic fungi. Metarhizium robertsii and Metarhizium brunneum can be associated with coffee plants and provide enhanced protection against a major pest of coffee, the coffee leaf miner (CLM) (Leucoptera coffeella). This association would be an easily deployable biological control option. Here we tested the potential of inoculating coffee seeds with M. robertsii and M. brunneum collected from the soil of coffee crops in the Cerrado (Brazil) for control of the CLM and the enhancement of plant growth with a commonly used fungicide. We conducted the experiment in a greenhouse and after the seedlings grew, we placed them in a cage with two couples of CLMs. We evaluated the CLM development time, reproduction, and plant growth traits. We observed a longer development time of CLMs when fed on plants inoculated with both isolates. In addition, the CLMs laid fewer eggs compared to those fed on plants without fungal inoculation. Plant growth was promoted when seeds were inoculated with fungi, and the fungicide did not affect any evaluated parameter. Fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda) has now spread to more than 26 Chinese provinces. The government is working with farmers and researchers to find ways to prevent and control this pest. The use of biochar is one of the economic and environmentally friendly strategies to increase plant growth and improve pest resistance. We tested four v/v combinations of bamboo charcoal with coconut bran [BC1 (10:1), BC2(30:1), BC3(50:1)] against a control (CK) in maize. We found that plant height, stem thickness, fresh weight and chlorophyll content were significantly higher in BC2, in addition to the lowest FAW survival %. We then compared the metabolome and transcriptome profiles of BC2 and CK maize plants under FAW herbivory. Our results show that the levels of flavonoids, amino acids and derivatives, nucleotides and derivatives and most phenolic acids decreased, while terpenoids, organic acids, lipids and defense-related hormones increased in BC-grown maize leaves. Transcriptome sequencing revealed consistent expression profiles of genes enriched in these pathways. We also observed the increased expression of genes related to abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, auxin and MAPK signaling. Based on these observations, we discussed the possible pathways involved in maize against FAW herbivory. We conclude that bamboo charcoal induces anti-herbivory responses in maize leaves. BACKGROUND: This study investigates factors contributing Amaranthus albus control failure in processing tomato fields in northern Israel. The study region is characterized by a significant climate gradient from east to west, providing the opportunity to investigate the effect of critical elements of the agricultural environment, e.g., temperature. Eight populations were collected from commercial fields in this region. Post‐emergence herbicide efficacy of metribuzin, a photosystem II inhibitor, and rimsulfuron, an acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor, was assessed through dose–response analyses at various growth stages. Temperature effects on control efficacy and resistance mechanisms were also explored. RESULTS: Standard metribuzin dose (X) was ineffective on A. albus plants with more than six true‐leaves, whereas 2X dose proved effective. Rimsulfuron at 16X dose was ineffective on plants with more than four true‐leaves. We report here the first case of target site resistance to ALS inhibitors in A. albus, due to point mutation in the ALS gene (Pro197 to Leu). Furthermore, our findings suggest potential involvement of CYT P450 enzymes in enhanced metabolizing of rimsulfuron. An overall decrease in dry weight was observed in response to both herbicides at 16/22 °C (P < 0.0001). Rimsulfuron was effective against only one population when applied at 28/34 °C. A possible fitness cost associated with target site‐resistant biotypes was observed under low temperature conditions, leading to effective control. CONCLUSION: This regional‐scale study highlights the challenges faced by growers, emphasizes the need for adapting management practices to the local climatic conditions and lays the groundwork for implementing location‐specific weed management strategies in commercial fields. © 2024 The Author(s). Despite major breeding efforts by various national and international agencies, yields for the ~40 million hectares of maize, the major food crop in sub‐Saharan Africa, have stagnated at <2 tons/ha/year for the past decade, one‐third the global average. Breeders have succeeded in breeding increased yield with a modicum of tolerance to some single‐weed or pathogen stresses. There has been minimal adoption of these varieties because introgressing polygenic yield and tolerance traits into locally adapted material is very challenging. Multiple traits to deal with pests (weeds, pathogens, and insects) are needed for farmer acceptance, because African fields typically encounter multiple pest constraints. Also, maize has no inherent resistance to some of these pest constraints, rendering them intractable to traditional breeding. The proposed solution is to simultaneously engineer multiple traits into one genetic locus. The dominantly inherited multi‐pest resistance trait single locus can be bred simply into locally adapted, elite high‐yielding material, and would be valuable for farmers, vastly increasing maize yields, and allowing for more than regional maize sufficiency. © 2024 The Author(s). BACKGROUND: Bordeaux mixture is a copper‐based fungicide commonly used in vineyards to prevent fungal and bacterial infections in grapevines. However, this fungicide may adversely affect the entomological component, including insect pests. Understanding the impacts of Bordeaux mixture on the vineyard pest Lobesia botrana is an increasing concern in the viticultural production. RESULTS: Bordeaux mixture had detrimental effects on the development and reproductive performance of L. botrana. Several physiological traits were adversely affected by copper‐based fungicide exposure, including a decrease in larval survival and a delayed larval development to moth emergence, as well as a reduced reproductive performance through a decrease in female fecundity and fertility and male sperm quality. However, we did not detect any effect of Bordeaux mixture on the measured reproductive behaviors (mating success, pre‐mating latency and mating duration). CONCLUSION: Ingestion by larvae of food contaminated with Bordeaux mixture had a negative effect on the reproductive performance of the pest L. botrana, which could affect its population dynamics in vineyards. Although this study highlighted collateral damage of Bordeaux mixture on L. botrana, the potential impact of copper‐based fungicides on vineyard diversity, including natural predators is discussed and needs to be taken in consideration in integrated pest management. © 2024 The Author(s). BACKGROUND: Anopheles arabiensis, a highly adaptable member of the Anopheles gambiae complex, poses a challenge for control efforts due to its outdoor biting and resting behaviour. Consequently, indoor insecticide‐based control methods are ineffective against An. arabiensis. Furthermore, An. arabiensis are adapting to breeding in polluted waters, and may be contributing to residual malaria and malaria in urban areas. There have been some advances in understanding the effect of rural pollutants on Anopheles mosquitoes, but the effect of urban pollutants is poorly understood. Thus, in this study, the effect of acidic pollutants [nitric acid (HNO3) and hydrochloric acid (HCl)] and alkaline pollutants (phosphate‐free and phosphate‐containing detergent) on two laboratory‐reared An. arabiensis strains – an insecticide susceptible strain (SENN) and an insecticide‐resistant strain selected from SENN (SENN‐DDT) – were determined. RESULTS: The median lethal concentration (LC50) and larval exposure on larval development, adult longevity and insecticide tolerance were evaluated. Nitric acid and phosphate‐containing detergent were found to be more toxic than HCl and phosphate‐free detergent in terms of LC50 values. Detergent exposure (both phosphate‐containing and phosphate‐free) increased adult longevity of both strains. Nitric acid reduced larval development time in both SENN and SENN‐DDT, whereas HCl reduced larval development time in SENN only. By contrast, both phosphate‐containing and phosphate‐free detergents increased larval development time of both strains. Furthermore, HNO3 and phosphate‐containing detergent increased insecticide tolerance the most. CONCLUSION: The two An. arabiensis strains responded to urban pollutants differently. BACKGROUND: Biological control of insect pests is encountering an unprecedented challenge in agricultural systems due to the ongoing rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) level. The use of entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) in these systems is gaining increased attention, and EPF as crop endophytes hold the potential for combining insect pest control and yield enhancement of crops, but the effects of increased CO2 concentration on this interaction are poorly understood. Here, the introduction of endophytic EPF was explored as an alternative sustainable management strategy benefiting crops under elevated CO2, using maize (Zea mays), Asian corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis), and EPF (Beauveria bassiana) to test changes in damage to maize plants from O. furnacalis, and the nutritional status (content of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), biomass, and yield of maize. RESULTS: The results showed that endophytic B. bassiana could alleviate the damage caused by O. furnacalis larvae for maize plants under ambient CO2 concentration, and this effect was enhanced under higher CO2 concentration. Inoculation with B. bassiana effectively counteracted the adverse impact of elevated CO2 on maize plants by preserving the nitrogen content at its baseline level (comparable with ambient CO2 conditions without B. bassiana). Both simultaneous effects could explain the improvement of biomass and yield of maize under B. bassiana inoculation and elevated CO2. CONCLUSION: This finding provides key information about the multifaceted benefits of B. bassiana as a maize endophyte. Our results highlight the promising potential of incorporating EPF as endophytes into integrated pest management strategies, particularly under elevated CO2 concentrations. © 2024 The Authors. Transgenic, dicamba‐resistant soybean and cotton were developed to enable farmers to combat weeds that had evolved resistance to the herbicide glyphosate. The dramatic increases in dicamba use these crops facilitated have led to serious problems, including the evolution of dicamba‐resistant weeds and widespread damage to susceptible crops and farming communities. Disturbingly, this pattern of dicamba use has unfolded while the total herbicide applied to soybean has nearly doubled since 2006. Without substantive changes to agricultural policy and decision making, the next 'silver‐bullet' agrotechnology will likely be no more than another step on the transgene‐facilitated herbicide treadmill. © 2024 The Authors. BACKGROUND: The active participation of farmers in adopting eco‐friendly practices is vital to mitigate the environmental and health risks linked to pesticide usage. Farmers' awareness of these risks significantly influences their adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) methods over traditional pesticide applications. This study sought to explore the range of understanding on pesticide effects, categorize IPM strategies employed in pest management, and examine the correlation between knowledge levels and IPM strategy choices. Data was gathered through structured questionnaires from 391 rice farmers in Sari County, Mazandaran province, Northern Iran. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis revealed three distinct dimensions of pesticide risk knowledge: personal risk of pesticide, environmental risk of pesticide, and community risk of pesticide. Furthermore, the study identified three primary categories of IPM strategies: high familiarity, intermediate familiarity, and low familiarity. The results of the regression analysis indicated that the personal risk of pesticides (β = 0.556; P < 0.01) and the environmental risk of pesticides (β = 0.262; P < 0.01) are significantly correlated with the adoption of high familiarity IPM strategies. Furthermore, the study revealed that there was no significant statistical evidence to support the notion that different types of pesticide risk knowledge had any influence on the adoption of intermediate and low familiarity strategies. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study imply the critical importance for agricultural extension programs to focus on enhancing farmers' knowledge of pesticide risks and various IPM strategies. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. BACKGROUND: Rhodesgrass mealybug, Antonina graminis, is a serious pest of ultradwarf hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis) on golf course putting greens. A. graminis feeding damage appears as extensive yellowing of turfgrass blades and heavy thinning from mid‐to‐late summer into fall. Putting greens are intensively managed areas of the golf course where fertilizers are routinely applied to maintain and enhance turfgrass quality, playability and aesthetics. We hypothesize that A. graminis populations can be minimized by reducing nitrogen (N) fertilizer and then effectively managed using systemic insecticides. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various levels of N fertilizer and flupyradifurone on the A. graminis population and turfgrass quality on the golf course putting green. The treatments were low, medium, and high N fertilizer rates with and without insecticide (flupyradifurone). RESULTS: Applying a high dose of N fertilizer improved turfgrass quality without increasing A. graminis densities on the golf course green. Although flupyradifurone application reduced A. graminis densities regardless of N fertilizer treatments, suppression of A. graminis densities improved at the high fertilizer dose with flupyradifurone. Additionally, the turfgrass quality on the putting green improved with high N fertilizer alone, regardless of flupyradifurone application. CONCLUSION: A. graminis populations can be managed using moderate to high levels of N fertilizer and applying a systemic insecticide. BACKGROUND: In agricultural pest management, especially in combatting the invasive red imported fire ant (RIFA, Solenopsis invicta), significant challenges emerge as a consequence of the constraints of solely depending on chemical insecticides or entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The utilization of chemical insecticides carries environmental and ecological hazards, whereas EPNs, when applied independently, might not offer the immediate effectiveness necessary for adequate RIFA suppression. Acknowledging these hurdles, our study investigates a synergistic method that integrates EPNs with chemical insecticides, aiming to fulfill the urgent demand for more efficient and environmentally friendly pest control solutions. RESULTS: Our evaluation focused on the interaction between the highly pathogenic Steinernema riobrave 7–12 EPN strain and prevalent insecticides, specifically beta‐cypermethrin and a mixture of bifenthrin and clothianidin, applied at highly diluted recommended concentrations. The findings revealed a notable increase in RIFA mortality rates when EPNs and these insecticides were used together, outperforming the results achieved with each method individually. Remarkably, this enhanced efficacy was especially evident at lower concentrations of the bifenthrin–clothianidin mixture, indicating a valuable approach to minimizing reliance on chemical insecticides in agriculture. Furthermore, the high survival rates of EPNs alongside the tested insecticides indicate their compatibility and potential for sustained use in integrated pest management programs. CONCLUSION: Our research underscores the effectiveness of merging EPNs with chemical insecticides as a powerful and sustainable strategy for RIFA management. BACKGROUND: The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the application of plant protection products (PPPs) in paddy fields is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide. Despite its growing usage, UAV spraying for rice pest control faces practical challenges, including limited canopy penetration, uneven deposition, and significant spray drift. This study investigated the impact of two tank‐mix adjuvants, Wonderful Rosin (Adjuvant‐1) and Tiandun (Adjuvant‐2), at six volume concentrations, on the spray liquid's physicochemical properties, spray drift, plant deposition, and the biological efficacy of rice insecticides using a quadrotor UAV sprayer. RESULTS: The physicochemical characteristics of the spray liquid influenced spray performance and biological efficacy. Incorporating Adjuvant‐1 and Adjuvant‐2 led to a decrease in surface tension and contact angle while increasing the viscosity of the spray solution. These alterations in surface tension and viscosity contributed to an optimized droplet size distribution, reduced spray drift, enhanced deposition uniformity and penetration, and improved control efficacy against the rice planthopper in UAV applications. The highest control efficacy was observed at a concentration of 0.5%, showing an improvement of 35.12% (Adjuvant‐1) and 20.23% (Adjuvant‐2) over applications without tank‐mix adjuvant 7 days after treatment. CONCLUSION: The judicious selection of tank‐mix adjuvants for UAV PPP applications can significantly enhance spray performance and biological efficacy in controlling rice insects. Background: Helopeltis cinchonae (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a major pest of tea plantations in Asia. Conventional control of pests with pesticides is unsustainable. Therefore, safe and eco‐friendly alternatives, such as pheromones, are required to manage the pest. Results: In gas chromatography–electroantennographic detection (GC–EAD) analysis of whole‐body extracts of virgin female H. cinchonae, two compounds elicited electroantennogram (EAG) responses from male antennae. These were identified as hexyl (R)‐3‐acetoxybutyrate and (R)‐1‐acetoxy‐5‐butyroxyhexane using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis compared to synthetic compounds. This is the first study to report 1‐acetoxy‐5‐butyroxyhexane as an insect pheromone component. The synthetic compounds elicited dose‐dependent EAG responses from the antennae of male H. cinchonae. In two field trapping experiments, the individual compounds were highly attractive to male H. cinchonae when dispensed from polyethylene vials. However, higher catches were obtained with blends of the two compounds in a 1:10 ratio. The blend of racemic compounds was as attractive as the blend of (R)‐enantiomers. Conclusions: We reported that 1‐acetoxy‐5‐butyroxyhexane and hexyl 3‐acetoxybutyrate are components of the female‐produced sex pheromone of H. cinchonae, but further work is required on the blend and loading of pheromone and on trap design to provide an optimized system for monitoring and control of this pest. The results may also facilitate the identification of the pheromones of other Helopeltis species, which are major pests in many crops. © 2024 The Authors. BACKGROUND: Agricultural pesticide use in sub‐Saharan Africa has doubled over the past three decades, with a greater relative increase for fungicides. As pesticide inputs continue to rise, so does the potential for the development of resistance. Here, we report on a survey conducted to understand pesticide resistance awareness, pesticide‐use knowledge and practices of growers and agricultural extension officers (AEOs) in the cereals growing‐belt of northern Ghana, with emphasis on fungicides. The results may inform development of strategies for improving pesticide literacy including resistance awareness, extension services and crop protection outcomes. RESULTS: The survey revealed a low level of pesticide‐use knowledge for AEOs and growers. This was more so for growers with low education, predominantly women. Education level (and indirectly gender) influenced perceived effectiveness of fungicides and levels of adoption of cultural and agrochemical best practices. Only 28% of growers and 11% of AEOs practiced crop and fungicide rotations, respectively. More than half (53%) of the respondents indicated that fungicides used in northern Ghana are not effective. CONCLUSION: Given the low level of pesticide literacy of AEOs and growers, training programs on best practice for the use of pesticides, with targeted initiatives for female growers, would improve crop protection outcomes and safety. The limited adoptions of crop rotation and repeated use of fungicides with the same active ingredients, along with >50% of respondents reporting 'fungicides not working' suggest the potential presence of fungicide resistance cases in growers' fields in the Northern region of Ghana. Further work is needed to determine the incidence of resistance in the region. It is recommended that a key policy priority should focus on understanding broader agrochemical‐use practices, crop losses and household‐level food security in the presence of resistance risks. © 2024 The Authors.
