Introduction. The modern way of life, characterized by the cult of individualism, discredited authority, and a proliferation of points of view about reality, has modified family structure. This social structure imbues families and the way that its members become ill, in such a way that eating behavior disorders (EDs) have become a typically postmodern way of becoming ill. Methodology. The aim is to understand the systemic structure and vulnerability of families by comparing 108 families with members who have ED to 108 families without pathology. A questionnaire administered by an interview with trained personnel was used. Results. Families with ED have a different structure from the families in the control group. They have more psychiatric history and poor coping skills. The family hierarchy is not clearly defined and the leadership is diffuse, with strict and unpredictable rules, more intergenerational coalitions, and fewer alliances. The relationship between the parents is distant or confrontational, and their attitudes towards their children are complacent and selfish, with ambivalent and unaffectionate bonds. In the case of mothers, this is manifested by separation anxiety and dyadic dependence. Their expectations concerning their offspring are either very demanding and unrealistic, or indifferent, and there is less control of their behavior, in addition to poor organization of the family meals. Conclusions. The structural differences between the two groups of families seem to be important for the occurrence and maintenance of EDs, although they may not be the only cause. The author explores how unresolved issues in the family system, including previous generations, can interfere with effective grieving in the here and now. The principles underpinning Hellinger’s (1998) family constellation approach are described, and aspects of entanglement and exclusion that are important in resolving issues related to grief and loss are considered. Some of the puzzles inherent in this work, such as intergenerational memory, are addressed, and transactional analysis authors whose approaches are congruent with systemic theory are cited. The author critiques some difficulties in Hellinger’s theory and describes recent developments in constellation theory, particularly ways to work in individual therapy sessions using this approach. Among a community sample of families (N = 128), this study examined how family members' shared and unique perspectives of family dysfunction relate to dyad members' shared views of dyad adjustment within adolescent-mother, adolescent-father, and mother-father dyads. Independent of a family's family perspective (shared perspective of family dysfunction), the adolescent's unique perspective was associated with lower security and higher conflict with both mother and father; the father's unique perspective was associated with lower security and higher conflict with the adolescent, as well as lower marital quality with mother; and the mother unique perspective was associated with lower marital quality with the father. Moreover, for adolescent-parent dyads, compared with the parent unique perspective, the adolescent unique perspective was more strongly associated with dyad adjustment. These findings indicate that both shared and unique views of the family system--the adolescent's unique view in particular--independently relate to the health of family subsystems. They also suggest that research, as well as therapeutic interventions, that focus on just the shared view of the family may miss important elements of family dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies on the impact of family factors on the identity formation process have focused on various aspects of family environment such as parental behavior (Romano, 2004), parental control (Luyckx et al., 2007), parental support and the quality of relationships between adolescents and their parents (Liberska, 2004), and the level of development of parents' identity (Syed, Seiffge-Krenke, 2012). The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between identity processes and dimensions of family functioning (i.e. cohesion, flexibility, and communication) in the perception of adolescents and young adults. The sample consisted of 119 high school and university students (72 women and 47 men) who completed the Polish versions of Flexibility and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES IV; Olson, 2011), and Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS; Luyckx et al., 2008). The correlation analysis and ANOVA test showed that different levels and different confi gurations of family environment characteristics are associated with identity formation processes in young people. The results also suggest that the observed relationship between different aspects of family functioning and identity dimensions changes with sex. At the same time, the obtained pattern of correlations in the current study was less systematic than it was expected on the basis of literature, and the directions of these correlations were not always congruent with predictions. Building on a longitudinal case study, this article describes the entrepreneurial behavior of a multinational family firm over generations. The study inductively raises the theoretic level to fill gaps in the literature about the family role in entrepreneurial behavior and addresses the singular count of the two- and three-circle models. The data analysis shows that entrepreneurial behavior emerges not only in response to business challenges but also and predominantly to family challenges. The cluster model is suggested as a necessary extension of the circle models, positing the family as the relevant level of analysis when considering entrepreneurial behavior and introducing the distinction between organic and portfolio, core and peripheral firms. Depression has a heightened prevalence in adolescence, with approximately 15 % of adolescents experiencing a major depressive episode by age 18. Depression in adolescence also poses a risk for future distress and impairment. Despite treatment advances, many adolescents relapse after initial remission. Family context may be an important factor in the developmental trajectory of adolescent depression, and thus in enhancing treatment. This study examined concurrent change over time in adolescent and maternal depressive symptoms in the context of the Treatment of Resistant Depression in Adolescents study. Participants were 334 adolescents (mean age: 16; SD: 1.6; 70 % female, 84 % Caucasian), and their mothers ( n = 241). All adolescents were clinically depressed when they entered the study and had received previous selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment. Adolescents received acute treatment for 12 weeks and additional treatment for 12 more weeks. Adolescent depression and suicidal ideation were assessed at 0, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 weeks, while maternal depressive symptoms were assessed at 0, 12, 24, 48 and 72 weeks. Latent basis growth curve analyses showed a significant correlation over 72 weeks between trajectories of maternal and adolescent depressive symptoms, supporting the hypothesis of concurrent patterns of change in these variables. The trajectories were correlated more strongly in a subsample that included only dyads in which mothers reported at least one depressive symptom at baseline. Results did not show a correlation between trajectories of maternal depressive symptoms and adolescent suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that adolescent and maternal depressive symptoms change in tandem, and that treatment for adolescent depression can benefit the wider family system. Notably, most mothers in this sample had subclinical depressive symptoms. Future research might explore these trajectories in dyads with more severely depressed mothers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nowadays Indian drama serials are very popular in Bangladesh. Young, old even children are interested to watch these serials. These people watch and imitate the life style portrayed in these daily soaps. This is gradually destroying our prolonged and enriched cultural norms and values. This study reveals that these Indian drama serials provoke sexual behavior, instigate pre and extra martial affair, educate criminal activity, rouse eve teasing, and nurture conflict between family members. This study also discloses that these daily soaps impose Hindu culture in every sphere of life of Bangladeshi people. This study was carried on 100 families of Dhaka city corporation area on the basis of random sampling. At the end the paper suggests some remedial measures that are indispensably needed to save our viewers from the negative consequences of Indian drama serials and stop cultural intrusion. The shift away from genetic determinism in the 1990s was followed by research exploring gene-environment interactions. The mechanism at play appears to begin with the organism's perception of the environment capable of triggering patterns of genome-wide transcription factors. Evolutionary preserved responses to the environment turn on and off immune system genes capable of preparing the organism for conflict as well as increasing the risk for disease. The almost minute-to-minute response of the genome to its environment and the transmission of these patterns across generations lend support to Bowen theory concepts of level of differentiation of self, psychological oneness, and the multigenerational transmission process. Faced with multiple pressures from family, study, employment and interpersonal relationship management, college students are more likely to suffer from mental health problems. At present, psychological intervention in China mainly focuses on drugs and interviews, ignoring the important role played by the family as a bio-psycho-social unit, and there are certain cultural compatibility differences. As an important activity in family life, family rituals have been widely used in the treatment of diseases or mental health in western countries. In contrast, in China, the public's attention and application of family rituals are obviously insufficient, and the relevant academic research results are relatively rare. In view of this, this paper adopts mathematical statistics method to clarify the internal relationship between family rituals and subjective well-being of college students, and verify the mediating role of family system in it, so as to provide effective suggestions for psychological health intervention of college students. Families today are a mosaic combining past and present. While emerging new family forms have recently become common, other traditional structures remain strong. Thus, a rigorous scientific approach to study current families must navigate between the Historical Demography and Sociology of the Family. Each of us is both an individual and a carrier of dynamics from many generations of ancestors. Many people hold trauma that belonged originally to other family members or the family group, and there are few ways to work with such situations clinically. In this article the authors address how the principles and practice of Hellinger’s (1998) family constellation work provide tools with which to heal the family system and thus the client. They describe the impact of the family group on the individual psyche and the practical application of family constellation work in group settings. They also explore the interface between family constellation work and transactional analysis, including how transactional analysis theory supports the use of family constellations. The purpose of the present study was to gain an understanding of family outcome, adjustment, and needs following traumatic brain injury (TBI) from the perspectives of adult sib lings. An American sample of 277 adult sib lings of persons with TBI responded to the question, "What impact has your sibling's TBI had on your family (e.g., parents, other sib lings, etc.)"? Responses were analyzed through constant comparative textual anal y sis. Responses were grouped into four themes including a) the consequences of providing care, b) family system impacts, c) evolved attitudes and beliefs, and d) how families provide care. From the perspective of adult siblings, TBI presents out comes which both strengthen and compromise family systems. The description of process of psychotherapy in single case study is crucial to improve the art and craft of psychotherapy. However, despite widespread acceptance of its importance among academicians there is dearth of descriptive accounts of case studies. The present paper attempts to describe the process of assessment and formulation highlighting the possible traps professionals may fall prey to using case study method. The case study describes psychotherapy with a couple who came with the chief complaint of empty nest syndrome with one parent at the center of problem. The detailed evaluation led to an alternative formulation following system's approach paving way for better management plan. The paper emphasizes the need to take a step back, especially in the cases of where 'obvious' easy explanations are available. The time spent on the assessment could become a game changer, as happened in the present case. Within psychosomatic families, the person who manifests the symptoms has a regulative role in solving the conflicts. The family contributes to the endurance of the symptom, whereas the ill person contributes to the maintaining of the pathologic equilibrium. We tried in this paper to approach the psychosomatic illness (bronchial asthma) in children according to the systemic theory. The theoretic input was conceived in such a way as to attack the bronchial asthma problematic with regard to children from the point of view of the medical prophylaxis as well as from the perspective of psychological research and systemic family therapy. Our hypothesis claims that, along with genetic factors conducive to bronchial asthma in children, there must be also other kind of factors of psychological and social nature that, in their turn, have a relevant significance in the manifestation and the maintaining of the illness. We drew special attention to the family of the child with bronchial asthma (the psychosomatic family) because we found theories and research that emphasized certain particularities in the functioning of the family within which the child with psychosomatic illness carries out certain vital roles. The establishment of severe diagnosis and exacting therapy of a severe or even life threatening disease is a stressful condition for the whole family including the healthy brothers and sisters. Newly diagnosed cases of severe disease in children and adolescents are concurrently on the increase. Physicians, nurses and clinical psychologists devote themselves to the child patient and his or her parents, whereas the healthy brother or sister is kept aside, there is not enough time for them. The worldwide research indicate that if such situation last long, which is common condition, the healthy individual get the problems internalized and his or her quality of life deteriorates. The article is devoted to the study of family factors of personal identity development during adolescence and early adulthood, families with "problem-free" and "deviant" teenagers and high-school students were taken as examples. It was revealed that these categories of children are significantly different in terms of identity development, and their families are essentially different by the parameters of family solidarity and adaptation, by such characteristics of upbringing as positive interest, directive approach, hostility, autonomy, coherence of parents at upbringing. This research investigated potential collateral benefits of the Family Check-Up (FCU) intervention, namely, primary caregivers' perceived social support and couple relationship satisfaction. A subsample of 435 low-income families with a 2-year-old child was recruited to participate in a randomized controlled trial assessing preventative effects of the FCU. Longitudinal growth models were used to evaluate intention-to-treat effects of the FCU on increases in primary caregivers' ratings of social support satisfaction with perceived social support and significant-other relationships, and indirect effects on primary caregivers through improvements in children's behavior problems. Support was found for a model in which reductions in child problem behavior from ages 2 to 4 predicted positive change in caregiver-rated social support and relationship satisfaction over a 3-year period. Theoretical background of the paper is a systemic approach to the family or, more specifically, the Circumplex model of family systems. The aim of this research is to examine whether the dimensions of family functioning - cohesion, flexibility, and communication - are connected to empathy in adults. In addition to that, we wanted to examine if there are any differences in perception of family functioning and the level of empathy in relation to family incomes. Empathy is defined as an ability to put oneself in someone else's shoes and an inclination to experience someone else's emotions indirectly; it is estimated by items taken from the EQ scale (Empathy Quotient, Baron-Cohen & Wheelwright, 2004). Dimensions of family functioning are assessed by an adaptation of the scales FACES III and IV (Olson & Gorall, 2007), which are derived from the Circumplex model. The research sample consisted of 1826 participants (760 males and 1066 females), aged 18 to 65. The results show that there is a positive correlation between all dimensions of family functioning and the empathy of participants: 0.153 with cohesion, 0.134 with flexibility, and 0.102 with communication (p<0.01). Higher empathy of family members indicates that family relationships are more cohesive and flexible, and that they include respectful communication. We also found statistically significant differences in the level of empathy in relation to the family income: empathy is higher if the income is higher. This study investigated conflict management style among married in terms of gender, and family system. The gender based distribution of a total hundred and sixty persons Sample (N = 160) consist of both men and women each represented through Eighty individuals (n = 80 each) from both categories of families i.e. nuclear and joint family system using sampling technique that is known as Snowball. 'Personal information sheet' known as Rahim organizational Conflict inventory - II (Rahim, 1983) was used to assess conflict management style. It is found that men use functional conflict management style in handling their problematic situation as compared to women (p<.01). Objective: The family remains one of the most important relationship systems into early adulthood and provides an important foundation for lifelong mental health. Dysfunctional family cohesion can promote adjustment problems in adolescents and might also affect adolescents' self-concept and strategies for coping with emotional distress. To test these relationships and the underlying mechanisms, we proposed a dual mediation model describing the associations between family cohesion and internalizing and externalizing problems, mediated by shame-proneness and expressive suppression., Methods: A sample of 526 German-speaking adolescents aged 14 to 18 years from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland participated in an online self-report survey encompassing questionnaires on family cohesion, shame-proneness, expressive suppression, and psychological problems. We tested a path model to examine the indirect pathways of the associations between family cohesion and internalizing and externalizing problems via shame-proneness and expressive suppression, while controlling for age, gender, and guilt-proneness., Results: We found a significant dual mediation of the associations between family cohesion and internalizing and externalizing problems by shame-proneness and expressive suppression. The indirect pathways were all significant, except for the indirect pathway from family cohesion to externalizing problems via shame-proneness., Discussion: Our results provide a model for the mechanisms by which disrupted family cohesion can be related to psychological problems in adolescents. Purpose :To understand child and family needs following TBI in early childhood, 22 caregivers of children who were hospitalized for a moderate to severe TBI between the ages of 0 and 4 within the past 10 years ( M  = 3.27 years; Range = 3 months to 8 years) participated in a needs assessment. Methods: Through a convergent study design, including focus groups (FG), key informant interviews (KII), and standardized questionnaires, caregivers discussed challenges and changes in their child's behaviors and functioning in addition to resources that would be helpful post-injury. Standardized questionnaires assessing current psychological distress and parenting stress in addition to open-ended questions about their general experience were completed. Results: Results indicated some families continue to experience unresolved concerns relating to the child's injury, caregiver wellbeing, and the family system after early TBI, including notable variation in caregiver reported psychological distress and parenting stress. Caregivers noted unmet needs post-injury, such as child behavior management and caregiver stress and coping. Conclusion: Early TBI can have a long-term impact on the child, caregivers, and family system. Addressing the needs of the whole family system in intervention and rehabilitation efforts may optimize outcomes following early TBI. Study results will inform intervention development to facilitate post-injury coping and positive parenting.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONEarly TBI can result in unmet needs that have a lingering impact on the child, caregiver, and family.Caregivers need information and resources that address their own distress and stressors related to changes in the child post-injury.Our study suggests that stress management and self-care skills are possible targets of intervention for caregivers of children who experienced an early TBI.

The idea is to analyze the reflections of families who have waited for the Dolphin Assisted Therapy for more than three years. This kind of therapy is very popular in Lithuania and abroad. There exists various common understandings why families wish to participate in Dolphin Assisted Therapy. Using the McMaster Family Assessment Device (Epstein, Baldwin, & Bishop, 1983) and incorporating the perspectives of adolescent, mother, and father, this study examined each family member's "unique perspective" or nonshared, idiosyncratic view of the family. We used a modified multitrait-multimethod confirmatory factor analysis that (a) isolated for each family member's 6 reports of family dysfunction the nonshared variance (a combination of variance idiosyncratic to the individual and measurement error) from variance shared by 1 or more family members and (b) extracted common variance across each family member's set of nonshared variances. The sample included 128 families from a U.S. East Coast metropolitan area. Each family member's unique perspective generalized across his or her different reports of family dysfunction and accounted for a sizable proportion of his or her own variance in reports of family dysfunction. In addition, after holding level of dysfunction constant across families and controlling for a family's shared variance (agreement regarding family dysfunction), each family member's unique perspective was associated with his or her own adjustment. This study examined the protective nature of youth reports of family interactions in relation to perceived exposure to violence and anger regulation in 84 children and early adolescents (mean age of 10.5; 7- 15 years old) primarily from ethnic minority groups and living in high-risk communities in a large southwestern city. Path analysis and bootstrapping methodology indicated that overall family system variables were primarily associated with anger regulation and exposure to violence through parenting behaviors. Specifically, perceptions of family cohesion and adaptability were indirectly associated with anger regulation through a positive association with parental support. Family cohesion and adaptability were indirectly associated with anger regulation and exposure to violence through parental supervision in different ways. Family cohesion was positively associated with parental supervision, whereas family adaptability was negatively associated with parental supervision. Implications are discussed for intervention and prevention programs aimed at youth residing in areas with economic disadvantage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To explore multiple family members' perceptions of risk and protective factors for healthful eating and physical activity in the home. Design: Ten multifamily focus groups were conducted with 26 families. Setting and Participants: Community setting with primarily black and white families. Family members (n - 103) were aged 8 to 61 years. Main Outcome Measures: Risk and protective factors for healthful eating and physical activity in the home environment. Analysis: A grounded hermeneutic approach. Results: Ten major themes were identified by family members related to health behaviors in the home environment, including accessibility to healthful foods and activity, time constraints, stage of youth development, individual investment in health behaviors, family investment in health behaviors, family meals and shared activities, parent modeling, making health behaviors fun, making health behaviors part of the family lifestyle, and community investment in family health behaviors. Conclusions and Implications: This study identified the importance of the family system and the reciprocal influences within the home environment on health behaviors. In addition, individual and community-level suggestions were identified. Insights from the families provide leads for future research and ideas for the prevention of youth obesity. Advances in medical and assistive technology have increased the likelihood of survival following a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Consequently, families frequently must provide care to individuals with TBI. Because they are rarely prepared for the associated demanding medical needs and financial burden, family caregivers are at risk for physical and emotional problems, which can negatively influence their individual and family functioning. Whereas scholars have examined the influence of survivor functioning on caregiver burden, few have explicitly recognized that caregiver burden also influences survivor functioning. Results of a multivariate linear regression suggest that, in a sample of 51 pairs of TBI survivors and their caregivers living in Colombia, survivors receiving care from a family member who reported a higher level of burden had poorer objective neuropsychological functioning than those receiving care from a family member who reported a lower level of burden, after controlling for survivor education and history of occupational therapy. Therefore, a family-focused approach might maximize intervention effectiveness, especially for Latin American and Hispanic families, which tend to be characterized by a strong sense of familism. The aim of this article was to explore succession as a role phenomenon. It further explores the relationship between the succession process and authority. The usefulness of the concepts of succession systems, role history and role biography are explored and discussed. The theoretical framework is based both on a system psychodynamic perspective of role and authority in organizations, and a transitional approach. Possessing a Hong Kong ID card and being in principle a local resident, but on certain issues treated differently from local people; having a South Asian face but imbued with Chinese culture and values; having dreams but no way to realize them—these are the typical struggles and problems faced by young Hong Kong ethnic minorities (EM). Through our experience in serving EM youth, we have discovered their annoyances and frustrations about living in Hong Kong, a society that does not fully consider or accommodate their needs in education, career development, or growth. In addition, they face internal struggles in their upbringing with two sets of values, one of their own culture, the other that of the local society. In exploring these struggles and challenges, we hope to stimulate concern and awareness among both the public and policy makers about this marginalized group in order that their long-standing problems will no longer be ignored. Abstract: Immigration often results in changes in family dynamics and gender roles, the loss of social networks and cultural identity, and difficulties interpreting and negotiating a new legal system. Understanding the specific nature of these changes and how factors are interlinked is a challenge for researchers. We explored cultural values, practices and behaviors relating to the family dynamics that Arabic speaking migrants (Sudanese, Iraqi and Lebanese) are confronted with and how they negotiate them in their new Australian environment. This study used qualitative methodology involving seven focus group discussions (n =64). Participants were purposively sampled from three metropolitan regions of Melbourne, Australia based on (1) geographic location, (2) country of birth, and (3) generation (parents vs. young people). Findings revealed a state of family disharmony characterised by three major themes: (1) parenting and youth freedom; (2) parents’ struggle to preserve cultural values; (3) changes in gender roles post-migration. This study demonstrates that family unity is a core value, a cultural framework through which decisions and the role of family members are determined, and a reference for support and negotiating post-migration experiences and challenges. However, Arabic speaking parents did not trust the legal system, with the perception that it was undermining and against family dynamics and values. Effective family interventions targeting this sub-population will need to incorporate support for parents and positive parenting programs and be built within an intergenerational framework to address an intergenerational acculturation gap.
