Abstract

Vegetation can enhance the stability of slopes by increasing the shear resistance of the soil. Shear stress applied to the soil matrix is resisted by the pullout strength of the roots via the friction at contact points between the soil and the roots. The effectiveness of root reinforcement depends on interface friction between soil and roots. In this study, tests were carried out on Indigofera amblyantha Craib roots, by measuring resistance as they are pulled out of the soil where the soil has varying dry densities. The results reveal three phases in the relationship between the pullout force and the slippage of the roots, i.e. (1) steep rise, (2) steep fall, and (3) gradual decline. In the first phase, the pullout force is increasing sharply and linearly up to a maximum when the slippage is about 10mm. With continued slippage, the required pullout force decreases significantly and nonlinearly in up and down fluctuations. Eventually, the pullout force reaches zero. For soil with a given dry density, the maximum pullout force increases linearly with increasing root diameter, and the correlation coefficient is greater than 0.9. Further, for a root with a given diameter, the maximum pullout force increases with increasing soil dry density. When the root breaks on pulling, it is called tensile failure; when the root is fully pulled out, it is called friction failure. The mode of failure for all roots is friction failure, for soil with dry densities of 1.35 g/cm3, 1.45 g/cm3, and 1.55 g/cm3. For soil with a dry density of 1.65 g/cm3, and root diameter under 0.716 mm, the observed failure mode is generally tensile; for diameters over 0.716 mm, the failure mode changes to friction; that is, thin roots break, thick roots get pulled out

310. Potential Association Between Changes in Microbiota Level and Lung Diseases: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

Objective:Lung microbiota is increasingly implicated in multiple types of respiratory diseases. However, no study has drawn a consistent conclusion regarding the relationship between changes in the microbial community and lung diseases. This study verifies the association between microbiota level and lung diseases by performing a meta-analysis.Methods:Literature databases, including PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Embase, Google Scholar, PMC, and CNKI, were used to collect related articles published before March 20, 2021. The standard mean deviation (SMD) and related 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup, sensitivity, and publication bias analyses were also conducted.Results:Six studies, comprising 695 patients with lung diseases and 176 healthy individuals, were included in this meta-analysis. The results indicated that the microbiota level was higher in patients with lung diseases than in healthy individuals (SMD = 0.39, 95% CI = 0.22–0.55, I2 = 91.5%, P < 0.01). Subgroup analysis based on country demonstrated that the microbiota level was significantly higher in Chinese (SMD = 1.90, 95% CI = 0.87–2.93, I2 = 62.3%, P < 0.01) and Korean (SMD = 0.24, 95% CI = 0.13–0.35, I2 = 78.7%, P < 0.01) patients with lung diseases. The microbiota level of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) (SMD = 1.40, 95% CI = 0.42–2.38, I2 = 97.3%, P = 0.005), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (SMD = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.09–0.50, I2 = 83.9%, P = 0.004), and asthma (SMD = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.06–0.32, I2 = 69.4%, P = 0.004) were significantly higher than those of the healthy group, whereas a lower microbiota level was found in patients with chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (CHP). The microbiota level significantly increased when the disease sample size was >50. Subgroup analysis based on different microbiota genera, indicated that Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were significantly increased in COPD and asthma diseases.Conclusion:We observed that patients with IPF, COPD, and asthma had a higher microbiota level, whereas patients with CHP had a lower microbiota level compared to the healthy individuals. The level of A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa were significantly higher in patients with COPD and asthma, and thus represented as potential microbiota markers in the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases.

314. Complete fine-equiaxed β-columnar grains in laser direct energy deposition of Ti–6Al–4V parts

Abstract

Coarse β-columnar grains are often present in Ti–6Al–4V laser-additive-manufactured samples, resulting in anisotropic and inferior fatigue performance under dynamic loading. Fine-equiaxed grains (FEGs) with a mean grain size of approximately 139 μm were successfully obtained by a novel deposition strategy through coordinated regulation of direct energy deposition technological parameters. Microstructures were transformed from α′ martensite to α'' martensite. As a result, the comprehensive performance was significantly improved. Without the use of an argon atmosphere glovebox and post heat treatment, the tensile strength and elongation in the horizontal direction of the FEGs were 1091 MPa and 4.09%, respectively. The corrosion resistance was 11.71-fold higher than that of the coarse columnar grains (CCGs). Improving the microstructure and performance by optimizing pulsed laser parameters is simple, effective, and conducive to online regulation of the quality of laser additive samples.

Abstract

In this paper, we consider Cauchy problem for the modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy on the real line with decaying initial data. Using the Riemann--Hilbert formulation and nonlinear steepest descent method, we derive a uniform asymptotic expansion to all orders in powers of $t^{-1/(2n+1)}$ with smooth coefficients of the variable $(-1)^{n+1}x((2n+1) t)^{-1/(2n+1)}$ in the self-similarity region for the solution of $n$-th member of the hierarchy. It turns out that the leading asymptotics is described by a family of special solutions of the Painlev\'e II hierarchy, which generalize the classical Ablowitz-Segur solution for the Painelv\'{e} II equation and appear in a variety of random matrix and statistical physics models. We establish the connection formulas for this family of solutions. In the special case that the reflection coefficient vanishes at the origin, the solutions of Painlev\'e II hierarchy in the leading coefficient vanishes as well, the leading and subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion are instead given explicitly in terms of derivatives of the generalized Airy function.

Abstract

Predicting rainfall-induced landslide displacement is one of the important means of disaster prevention and mitigation. Considering the Tanjiawan landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area as the research object, the daily rainfall and soil moisture content as influencing factors, complementary ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) was used to decompose the time series of displacement and influencing factors, followed by K-means clustering to determine the periodic displacement, random displacement, trend displacement, and their corresponding influencing factor components after decomposition. The Grey System theory was used to test the correlation between the influencing factor and decomposition displacement, and the least squares support vector machine based on particle swarm optimization (PSO-LSSVM) and the least square method were used to predict the decomposition displacement. The results showed that after decomposition and clustering, the grey relational degree between the influencing factor and the decomposition displacement is up to 0.91, which showed that the selection of the displacement decomposition and the influencing factor is reliable. A coefficient of determination of 1.00 indicated that the quadratic least squares function model can predict the trend displacement well, and the root mean squared error value of the PSO-LSSVM model predicting displacement did not exceed 21.62 mm. At the same time, compared with the prediction results without considering water content as the influencing factor, the results show that the prediction effect considering water content as the influencing factor is very reliable, and the model in this study can achieve the displacement prediction of rainfall-type landslides satisfactorily. Abstract

• Path planning-based algorithm enhances cooling plant equipment control. • Real-time graph updates prevent control blocking, ensure accurate decisions. • Expected to become the underlying execution algorithm for optimization algorithms. This paper presents a novel path planning-based start-stop control algorithm for equipment in cooling plants designed to address the limitations of traditional serial start-stop control logic. The algorithm employs graph theory and path planning techniques to abstract the cooling plant schematic into a directed graph, enabling the selection of appropriate control paths and facilitating effective start-stop control decisions for the equipment. A key feature is the dynamic updating of the graph after each operation, which enables adaptive control target adjustments and prevents control blocking issues. Validation with real case scenarios demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm in automatic start-stop control, identifying equipment deviations, and handling faulty equipment switching. The algorithm also has the ability to handle some incorrectly turned on equipment, shutting down redundant equipment in the cooling plant system that is not in efficient operation. This algorithm shows the potential as an underlying execution algorithm of an advanced optimization algorithm to accelerate the implementation of advanced optimization algorithms.
